Why do I feel the need to "make the most" out of the sun?
Posted by DescriptionFuture851@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 114 comments
On any other given ~~Monday~~ Sunday, I'd not care about "making the most" of the day, I'd simply do my typical routine and not think twice.
However, because the weather is so nice, I feel a little bummed out that it's only 3pm and my typical routine is done already.
As much as I like video games, YouTube, TV Shows etc, I find it pretty sad that it's boiling hot and I'm choosing to stay indoors.
Lynvor@reddit
Nothing wrong with it I have been doing the same but I did go for an walk earlier around the park and then home. I have seen videos THIS weekend of people at packed out hike trails and beaches, cars everywhere and it just looks a nightmare.
Altruistic_Alpine12@reddit
I find going to the beach to be a nightmare in general. For a walk is fine but the people who set up and spend a hot day there with hundreds of other people and going into the water and still finding sand in things days after. To each their own but I hate it
Rusty_Tap@reddit
I have always found going to the beach on a nice day a bit of a miserable experience overall. You park 15 minutes away, paying handsomely for the privilege, then trudge towards the beach, carrying a picnic that if you're honest is just a bit shit.
You made a picnic to avoid paying £30 each for fish and chips at the only place open because they have activated their dynamic pricing on account of it being a nice day.
You find yourself a space among the dog shit and hundreds of people who decided to do the same thing. Sit for a while on the beach, trapping sand in every orifice, wondering why you didn't bring more equipment like blankets or some form of portable shade. Oh, and you're thirsty but you didn't put any drinks in the picnic so now you have to walk a mile and a half carrying your half-assed picnic to the nearest shop where you can get 3 cans of coke for £9.
When you get back to the beach your spot is now occupied by another group so you end up just going to sit on a wall somewhere to eat your disgraceful picnic. The moment you unwrap your sandwich, the only gust of wind there has been for the entire day blows sand into it so now you have nothing to eat either.
You get back in the car feeling more miserable than if you'd just run a marathon attached to a Nissan Micra and tell yourself it'll never happen again, fuck this. Then you do exactly the same thing next year.
Where is the joy in that?
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Excellent writing! I pictured and could smell this description.
Tigertotz_411@reddit
This depends heavily on the beach. The UK's coastline is huge. Popular beaches, yes, but away from the south coast its not quite like this everywhere.
merlybirds@reddit
I've just got back from a beach on the south coast and it was perfect - but if I'd gone ~20 along to Brighton I'd agree with above. Really depends on the actual place
SunBeamBlues@reddit
Up voting for the imagery you've conjured up, but I disagree with a lot of it but kudos for the effort you've put into that 😂
Rusty_Tap@reddit
Oh yes it's heavily subjective. Some people like going to the beach!

I’m the same mate. I like suiting myself with whatever. That feeling like you HAVE to be outside can be crushing.
Relevant_Law_5928@reddit
It’s more productive. Also, you wouldn’t go abroad and sit in your room all day watching TV would you? So people at home like to make the most out of weather that best replicates a trip abroad. Again, go out and make the most of a beautiful day! We don’t get them often.
Random_Nobody1991@reddit
Hot weather doesn’t necessarily equate to being nice or comfortable. Don’t get me wrong, anything up to 25 or so is lovely and I’ll happily go out and do things. When it’s around 30 though? No thanks, wish it was 3.0 degrees instead,
Relevant_Law_5928@reddit
Each to their own I suppose. I think it’s great to have weather similar to a country I’d pay to visit for a holiday, it’s beautiful.
Random_Nobody1991@reddit
I get the logic but even then it’s not the same, if anything it’s worse here. When it’s 30 plus degrees here, it’s often far more humid so being outdoors is more uncomfortable and our buildings are designed to let heat in and to keep it in which isn’t exactly great when trying to sleep at night or when you’re working (whether at home, in an office or elsewhere, especially without AC).
At least when you go to hot countries, they’re usually equipped to deal with the conditions.
rich1068@reddit
I'm inside watching American Werewolf in London. With a vodka and tonic 👍 Nipped to the shops this morning to get something for tea, too hot to sit in the garden. I'm perfectly content.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Great choice! That was the first movie I saw on Betamax video.
Revolutionary_West56@reddit
Excellent film choice to avoid the sun in

You'll be at risk of heatstroke though when that shower scene with Jenny Agguter comes on! 😅😉

She was pretty hot in that movie.

She was at the core of my bisexual awakening 😂 Also I did develop a temporary werewolf fetish, but I'm alright...noooooooowwwwwwwwwww!

Absolute classic of a film that, far better than sitting outside melting
Plus it has prime Jenny Agutter as well. What more do you need really

Glittering_Vast938@reddit
It’s too hot to be outside! My garden is 34C - my living room is a nice, relatively cool 23C as I’ve had the windows and curtains shut all day.
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
Apart from washing my car today, I've been inside with curtains shut!
I love the sun abroad, but this country its not pleasant
GameSetChampionship@reddit
You not got any outside space?
If you have; optimise it! Spend a bit of money on a parasol, nice chairs, relax and read etc. Get a nice cocktail made up.
You can recreate abroad, but you need bit of a nice outside space.
Mobile_Play_9378@reddit
Not everyone likes to be in the sun and heat and that’s ok :) you enjoy
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
I think he totally missed the part I want to be indoors 😆
Mobile_Play_9378@reddit
I’m exactly the same! Been inside with the curtains shut all day. Roll on September 😂
ShinyHeadedCook@reddit
Only things I like are that its easy to get your washing dry and driving is almost certainly in the light !
CareGullible5801@reddit
Exactly this but have the air con set to 16 delicious ❄️❄️
Krxmvh@reddit
on days like today, i prefer to stay inside and protect my skin. even if i cover up, i get all hot and frustrated in this type of heat.
GameSetChampionship@reddit
It’s perfectly safe to have a bit of sun.
Get some sunscreen on, an hour or two outside is healthy for you.
Don’t believe the scaremongers.
BornObjective2@reddit
You can get a healthy amount of sun at any time of year. It doesn't need to be when it's 30 degrees and UV 7
melinoya@reddit
"A bit of sun" is fine, two hours straight in 35 degrees is fine but not the greatest idea. Not really scaremongering to try and get Brits to take hot weather and humidity seriously.
ellisellisrocks@reddit
PUB GARDEN
iamsheena@reddit
I sat outside and read for a couple hours in the shade, which was really peaceful. During the week on hot days, I set myself up outside on work from home days.
Jcw28@reddit
Stop worrying about doing what you think people expect you to do and just do what you want instead. I feel no pressure whatsoever to enjoy the sun and have spent all weekend inside playing games quite happily, which I'd do come rain or shine.
jenllplaydead@reddit
Got up at 6, at the allotment to water at 7:30, Tesco at 8 for picky bits for tea, couple of hours in the shady garden reading with a coffee and an afternoon in the cool front room snoozing and watching crap on YouTube. A good day was had here. Too hot and I’m too pale to be out in the sunshiiiine too much. Hoping to get back out around 8 for a cool evening read too.
blue-was-found@reddit
im admiring the weather from my bedroom as i study for my upcoming exam with a fan on full blast
heyitsed2@reddit
I didn't have any plans and have spent all weekend inside keeping cool, next weekend I've got plans so I'll be out and about... Is what it is really innit.
melanie110@reddit
My husband only sits in the sun if we’re on holiday yet I’m out in the garden all time. You just do what makes you happy. No pressure from anyone unless you put it on yourself.
Just because someone likes to be out in it all the time doesn’t make it wrong, neither does it sitting inside. Everyone has different preferences
Ok-Corgi78@reddit
Yes, I compulsively spent time sitting outside during weather like this, if I'm stuck inside I feel an urgent longing to get out.
skroder@reddit
I’m from the Philippines and I am used to the hot and humid weather there.
However here in the UK, it’s literally hell on earth humidity- and temperature-wise. So don’t fret.
5thhorse-man@reddit
I haven't even drank a beer or cider yety body's just wanting cold water🤣 I'm so pathetically British!
Mahoutie@reddit
I can't help but feel that the British public have been brainwashed for decades to look positively at this kind of weather. Anything hotter than 21 degrees Celsius and I'm dying of heatstroke.
memes_and_ukuleles@reddit
yes!! theres a very strange culture around hot weather with the people in this country, i've noticed. my mother is from japan and she's always VERY careful about the heat, my father (english) is the opposite, hardly ever even wears sunscreen despite being so prone to sunburn. i know that britain is known for its gloomy weather, so it makes sense that as soon as the sun comes out, they make a whole song and dance about it (the beatles quite literally wrote a whole song about it hehehe). even so, with the climate getting the way it is, i think there should be more emphasis towards the british public about the dangers of heat, and how to actually deal with it in a way that doesn't risk one's health.
Random_Nobody1991@reddit
While I think if you’re finding 21 too hot you should probably get that looked at, I do broadly agree with you. Even if the temperature is over 35, which is horrendously uncomfortable in the UK, it’s not uncommon to see headlines talking up how lovely it’s going to be and so on. Even then, I get asked after the fact if I enjoyed the weather and then proceed to state that I hate hot weather in the UK.
Anything up to 25 is fine and up to 30, you should perhaps be careful. Anymore than that and I’m staying in with my portable AC unit.
RomansDoForUs@reddit
I really stayed inside all day. It's too humid. Was sweating just sat down outside doing nothing 😀
FutilePenguins@reddit
Its sounds like you're either overly analytical or overly critical of yourself. You already achieved a full day so you're allowed to relax and just appreciate the fact that it isnt raining
Impossible_Mouse_147@reddit
You could go and sit outside and read/listen to music/podcasts.
But yeah dont be too hard on yourself, good weather does come and go (and tbh, seems to be more common in the UK).
Nervous_Split_3176@reddit
you WANT to go outside in this heat?
pleasedontwearthat@reddit
sat in the shade of the garden in a flat hammock with a book for the best part of 3 days. bliss!
Cal_PCGW@reddit
Inside because it's too hot outside. I went for a very short walk after lunch (I try to do this for digestion) and normally I'd do 2-3 miles but today it was half a mile and I retreated back inside. I don't care for heat and I don't want a sunburn.
Sirlacker@reddit
Because we don't get it often.
It's nice to go and do something in the heat and sun.
We've completely cut back on our normal chores this weekend and done the bare minimum just so we can spend more time outside with the kids.
Once the kids are in bed I'm off to a large motorcycle meet. I don't usually like them, but the weather is too nice to pass up on, will be lots of bikes to look at and the cafe there is open till 10pm.
Currently sat outside whilst tea is cooking, watching the helicopters and planes fly by since we live close to an airfield.
Just get out and get that vitamin D whilst you can, bask in how good the UK actually looks in the sunshine as opposed to the dreary grey.
GameSetChampionship@reddit
Can you not sit outside your property?
That’s all. Just have a bit of sun. Get a nice drink, read, play.
I love sitting out the back with my iPad or Steam Deck and headphones. You can do it in the evening in this weather, so the day is far from over!
Get a chair, sit out, that’s it! Or, go to the park and sit.
thorn312@reddit
I have been spending an hour or two in an inflatable paddling pool with a book. Reading is the best way for me to be able to stay outside. I also spend a good amount of time watching insects.
Suncream mandatory.

SilyLavage@reddit
Weather like this is functionally equivalent to a rainy day in terms of how comfortable it is to be outside. I don't want to sit in my garden in a downpour and I don't want to in over 30 degree heat either.
The UK's old climate was pretty miserable, so we were conditioned to see any sunny day as good. Now we have a new climate because of climate change, and we're going to have to get used to treating weather like this with caution.
HydraCentaurus@reddit
If I had a little house, I’d be out in the garden, I wouldn’t even try to meet up with anyone or have others come over 😅 I’d just sit under a patio umbrella with my doors wide open and a glass of wine. With ice!
mr_owie@reddit
Because you are dissatisfied with your current life and the unusual heat is making this more apparent.
thecheerygamer@reddit
Hot days like this are about survival, not enjoyment. I can't do anything once it's over 25C without sweating like I've just climbed out of a swimming pool. I basically barricade my house against the sun and try to avoid running any appliances that could anger our thermodynamic overlords.
Currently at work hiding in an air conditioned van parked in the shade, dreading having to get out and be expected to function.
PhilosopherMuted3551@reddit
I have been to a local spot on my paddle board by myself. It was really busy but a great vibe with lots of families having bbqs and playing in the water. I’ve stopped at a pub on the way home to have a couple of ciders before grabbing some fish and chips and some more ciders for eating my fish and chips in my shaded garden.
I don’t usually make the most of the sunshine at weekends but today I looked at next weekends weather and thought I would make the most of it.
Factor 50 applied multiple times during the day and the cold water was very refreshing. I didn’t feel at hot if I had stayed at home in the dark.
According-Summer-780@reddit
I don’t have a garden, well I have like a walled yard which wouldn’t be very pleasant to sit in really so I usually go out somewhere to get a good blast of sun then I come back and do whatever I normally would. I can’t take my dog in the heat and I spend most my time with him anyway so happy to be at home
Cringewrapsupreme@reddit
So im not a hot weather enjoyer, and do much better in cooler weather, and prefer it with how i like to dress, so i get where youre coming from.
But, i will say that a good walk or trip out to see or do something nice (eg visiting a nature reserve, paddleboarding, pint in a nice beer garden) in good weather feels good and i feel glad i have done so, then retreating inside to cool down.
I find a lot of enjoyment from the wildlife thats around this time of year, and it can really make my day to see something cool. I also know in a few months, the days wil be short again, weather will get wetter and windows to go do nice stuff become shorter and fewer.
RecentTwo544@reddit
There's a few areas of low pressure arriving next week, with temperatures down to 16, cloud, rain, wind. No sign of it letting up all the way through June.
If this happens, it will be a result of the jet stream positioning itself south of the UK, which often sticks into place all summer.
So this might be it, the only bit of summer we're getting.
CooperAXE@reddit
That makes two of us. Most my mates are married, some with kids, so they don't have time to go hang out at the park or beach. Feels lonely, lol
RelationshipLife6739@reddit
I mean I assume it’s cos we literally never get sun so when there is sun you subconsciously wanna go out and catch the vitamin d.
NobDeRiro@reddit
If you’re happy to stay indoors then do it. If you feel like you want to go out, do it. Personally I’m using the heat as a good excuse to do absolutely nothing except sit in the garden now it’s shaded…
Double_Double7407@reddit
Jesus fucking Christ... "what is there to do outside?" Is this what we've come to?
PitifulParfait@reddit
You can admire it out the window, you can watch the dappled light through the leaves as it falls on your sofa. You can open a window and feel the warm breeze. It’s possible to be indoors while fully appreciating the gorgeous outdoors.
RedditReader365@reddit
You are not alone in that feeling, I always feel guilt to not spend sunny days outdoors
IndividualScheme5974@reddit
Because it’s the start of summer, you feel a pull to the change of it all. So remind yourself that we now have months on end of this sunny shit, so this is not, in actuality, novel. (I hate the heat and sunshine, I’m in mourning. Bring back my dour rainy months!)
unbelievablydull82@reddit
Nipped to an IKEA, barely any shoppers, grabbed a few bits, and now lounging around like a fat house cat..my wife and daughter are trying to get me in the pool, fuck that in this heat.
catface@reddit
I hung some washing out 5 minutes ago and felt like I was being vaporised. Doing anything other than staying indoors while it's a billion degrees out there is pretty mental.
brucejson-88@reddit
Do whatever makes you happy. Ever since developing FND I no longer can enjoy this weather, heat makes all my symptoms so much worse that I physically can't get out. Live now ❤️
Altruistic_Lies@reddit
Because it's not a certainty in this country. This bank holiday is incredibly lucky, and I've done so much. If we knew we'd get 30° for 6 weeks we'd all be much more chilled about it (ironically lmao) so get outside, explore and wear suncream.
Mrslinkydragon@reddit
I went to my local art shop and back, that was enough sun for me!
This morning with fine. Felt like sardinia, on the way back was not fine.
Specialist-Prior-213@reddit
Because you've haven't gone out in a t shirt in 6 months or more
KnownAndNamed@reddit
I’ve felt like that my whole life when it’s nice outside. I’ve always gone out and made the most of it even if that means sitting in the shade and doing nothing. I’ve neglected important jobs to do it.
Ive just always thought it ingrained in who I am. But what changed for me is I have to keep my kid cool. I’m more than happy to stay in if it equals safety for him. We did the very shaded park this morning close to the beach which was horrendously busy. The kids park was empty and look like the whole country was sat by the water, didn’t look fun at all! The car parks and roads that we walk past to get there are also diabolical. I don’t envy anyone on the beach today!!
Plastic_You137@reddit
I live in a coastal town where people love to visit on a bank holiday. This automatically makes me stay home! I went into town for a coffee first thing and the streams of people coming out of the station with their buckets and spades made me turn around and seek solace in my back garden instead.
I may venture to the beach this evening when people have gone home…. Just to make the most of the weather 😂
DeirdreBarstool@reddit
Sounds like you’ve already made the most of the day!
My main issue is I live in a flat with no outdoor space, so when it’s nice I HAVE to go somewhere to enjoy it. If I had a garden I’d be more than happy to just chill in it and read a book.
douggieball1312@reddit
I just remember when we last had a good bit of weather on May Bank Holiday weekend (back in 2023), the weather throughout the following June and July was pretty terrible so if this year follows the same trend, enjoy it while it lasts.

Me too.
I have spent the last few years working super long hours and currently on a break, making the most of the nice weather.
Lucky to have a large garden which constantly needs something done in it.
And the house, always stuff to be sorted/fixed, walls to be painted, cleaning to be done, cupboards to be re-organized, stuff to be run to the dump etc.
Of course - dogs too: giving them a groom, cleaning their stuff, walking them.
It was a rough Spring, 100% get out there, get for some walks, just be outside as much as you can.
Don't forget your SPF 50+
