I’ll go first, mine was @talk21.com, which was a BT webmail service from the 90’s.

Nice try, Putin.
CommunityOld1897GM2U@reddit
Mine was yahoo but also recall the weird email phones BT brought out for the talk21 system. never used it for emails but I remember it existing.
Aggravating-Web-3050@reddit
@yahoo.co.uk
spffngly@reddit
I remember being the only one with this when everyone else had a hotmail and feeling very uncool about it 😢
Jayflux1@reddit
Hotmail to Yahoo was like Facebook to MySpace.
Me and my friends all had a yahoo email first, then gradually everyone moved over to Hotmail. But for the generation after, they all started on straight on Hotmail and didn’t know yahoo was a thing.
Firthy2002@reddit
Same. Everyone else in school was signing up to Hotmail and here I was with my Yahoo account (although I signed up to Hotmail eventually, mainly for MSN Messenger purposes),
betterland@reddit
me too! actually my main address I still use ymail.com I made it like 10 or more years ago and everyone asked me if that's meant to be Gmail. ugh
Tattycakes@reddit
Same! Still have it, though the name is too embarrassing to use haha
ladybigsuze@reddit
I still use my yahoo.com email address!
LazyEmu5073@reddit
Me too, which pre-dates the .co.uk ones.
MyMaisie@reddit
I still use my yahoo. co. uk.
Largejam@reddit
Mine is Yahoo.com as when I set it up they still only allowed .com accounts
frankie_0924@reddit
Mine is firstnamelastname@yahoo.com. I still use it as my spam email account. Found an email in my sent folder from May 2002
I_am_notagoose@reddit
Yep, still my main email address. Originally you couldn't use dots in Yahoo email addresses, but they say they changed it my Dad went on literally the minute they were released and got our whole family firstname.lastname@yahoo.co.uk.
I also still have cringinglyembarrassingemailaddressisetupasanedgyteenager@yahoo.co.uk which I occasionally still use if I want a bit more anonymity...
trainpk85@reddit
I have firstnamelastname@yahoo.co.uk I did have a Hotmail but it was something risqué so stopped using it and created yahoo when I wanted to apply for uni and had to put it on my ucas forms. Still use the yahoo account.
BigEdMustaphaz@reddit
I’m still using actively using firstnamemiddlenamelastname@yahoo.co.uk
Tall-Paul-UK@reddit
Same. And still use it now for signing up to the occasional site that I know is going to spam me!

Hebrind@reddit
I’m a UK-based Hotmail.com user, which is around 1998. I remember I made one for getting in a clan on Team Fortress Classic - ah, them were the days.
allcretansareliars@reddit
My first personal email was demon, but I had a work email (.ac.uk) in the 80s which had the name of the server that I logged in to pick up the mail from. Dedicated mailservers were a waste of money 8-)
Prof_PW@reddit
I remember I had tiscali (I think that was how it was spelt)
cono1717@reddit
Tiscali
VFrosty3@reddit
We had Tiscali in 99 too.
szmidtten@reddit
I couldn't remember mine so I was browsing through until I found the one - this was it!
IsomerUK@reddit
I still use my @tiscali.co.uk address… In fact it was LibertySurf, that was bought by Tiscali after they discovered offering unlimited 0800 dial-up for £20 a year was not commercially viable long term!
Marilliana@reddit
This wasn't my first email (I'd had a yahoo.co.uk since 1999), but Tiscali was the first broadband provider I paid for myself! I had internet in the downstairs room of my shared house just for me!
thatguyjames_uk@reddit
omg yep lol taken by talktalk
miklovesrum@reddit
Same!
VFrosty3@reddit
I think it may have been AOL. We got online in 1995, I only knew two other people that had internet at that time.
BrummieTaff@reddit
Yeah mine was talk21 too. Became completely unuseable once the spammers got hold of it. I was so naive in the 90s, used to post comments on forums and fill in the "email address" form at the end for literally everyone to see. I don't know why. Clicked the "opt out" links on every spam I received. Became literally like looking for a needle in a haystack.
Also remember the rick rolls (and the duck rolls that preceded it) were much more malicious in those days. You'd try to close them but clicking the x would just open another window with the same thing! Somehow managed to get out can't remember how, maybe task manager but I didn't know shit.
I also remember getting infected with viruses like the one where every 3rd or so google search would instead send you to a site that had payed the virus maker? I think it was called "goored" or something. Got online help from a forum to get rid of that.
Also one time, I started my computer (this is my first home windows computer that I got for uni) and there was no start button, no nothing except 4 little squares that I could click on. Each of those squares was a porn site! Looked like my 'puter was toast. Can't remember how I got out of that.
Fuck I was a noob!
swinefever@reddit
@swinefever.demon.co.uk, and eventually @compuserve.com
OnceUponAComment@reddit
@aol.com
AnonymousTimewaster@reddit
Hotmail of course. The one I still use. And I'll call the web address outlook when they pry my Hotmail address from my cold dead hands.
PsychoticDust@reddit
@msn.com for me. I still use it! Anyone else here with the same?
Green_Eyed_Slayer@reddit
Yes! 1st name, last name msn.com here
Monk3y_Trousers@reddit
Me too! My was msn.com and I still have access to it
PsychoticDust@reddit
Nice one! I like the nostalgic reactions I get when people find out.
Monk3y_Trousers@reddit
Same! The occasional comment of ‘oh that’s old school’ always makes me smile
obsidianstrobe@reddit (OP)
Hotmail was standard for so many people.
AnonymousTimewaster@reddit
Yeah I think you're about to find out just how many people had Hotmail lol
i_am_simple_bob@reddit
Hotmail was the worlds first free web email service. It was so popular that Microsoft acquired. I had my firstname.lastname@hotmail.com because I signed up on the first week, maybe day.
What else can I say to prove how old and geeky I am?
scottyman2k@reddit
My first Gmail was firstname@gmail.com
TheThurgarland@reddit
Lucky you
Advanced_Couple_3488@reddit
I remember that I could have had firstnamelastname@gmail.com and decided not too because I thought no one would want to type all that. Sigh.
I did grab one closely related to my specialist area in music, though.
My first serious email address was as a member of a professional association and they offered an email service as part of the benefits for being a member. I only deprecated that because I have my own domain name and didn't want to keep paying membership fees that cost more than hosting my own domain.
I don't seriously use my Gmail account for the obvious reasons.
Lottiepop420@reddit
You don't want it. I daily get email for other people with my name. It is not a particularly popular name, most people can't pronounce my surname.
scottyman2k@reddit
Yeah - I gave mine up because I got so many people just using it for theirs - some idiot in the US kept telling people it was his, and had his family members threatening to sue me for stealing it!! Eventually gave it up because the whole experience was tiresome - when you have emails either threaten and harassment almost every day over an email address .. madness.
throwawayinfinitygem@reddit
Unfortunately I've had at least one American signing up to things using my Gmail address for several years.
TheBlueprint666@reddit
I had firstnamedotlastname@googlemaildotcom for mine
MxJamesC@reddit
I have surname@gmail.com and someshit@hotmail.com
Shyaustenwriter@reddit
I have an incredibly common firstnamelastname (there are 4 of us in my home town that I know of) and I managed to snag firstnamemiddleinitiallastname@gmail.com
I still get regular email from a sorority and from a Canadian rapid transit.
JoshieMcJoshface@reddit
I met some girl on holiday once when I was younger who’s was firstname@hotmail.com it was so impressive I’m still thinking about it to this day
ghusto179@reddit
I had firstname@googlemail.com when it was in beta mode, but got locked out of it. My recovery email was work related, but tied to a specific web domain project that I never really used. I think I had to confirm my email in order to move to @gmail.com and it just kept saying it didn’t recognise my recovery email 😭
PeteWTF@reddit
If you still have access to it Googlemail com and gmail.com are interchangeable
Vequihellin@reddit
I'm so old, someone had to send me an invite for a Gmail account.
Clomojo87@reddit
I have a Googlemail.com and a gmail.com because they changed it and both still work (for now)
DangerousDisplay7664@reddit
Mine was firstname@googlemail.com - because Google did not yet own the rights to the Gmail.com domain 😂
Supergoose5000@reddit
A dream I never thought I wanted! I might fire them an email asking to buy it.
t3rm3y@reddit
I thought there were loads more before Hotmail? Didn't Hotmail just take off as all the (at the time) kids , were all using msn messenger, I was then adulting so didnt get hooked.
Stifton@reddit
I still use my Hotmail because it is this
Bobinska@reddit
I did the same with @live. Firstname@live
Also did a few random ones at the time just for fun, like homer@live etc.
Still use it today but my god the spam bots that guessed it was a live account. I made the mistake of doing the 'unsubscribe by clicking here' and just made them aware that the account was active soon after.
Price to pay for having a good email. Live are pants for deleting / blocking multiple emails on phone app and I can't do via laptop / computer.
Mmordo@reddit
Had???? May I please request we sustain present tense!?!
Lopsided_Soup_3533@reddit
i think my first email address was a @yahoo.co.uk think I got a Hotmail about 5 years later. I still use the yahoo dont remember the Hotmail. I keep the yahoo for things I need an email address for but dont want to read constant spam. I dread to think what my unread inbox is

pippaskipper@reddit

Mine is still Hotmail.co.uk
DrainpipeDreams@reddit
I signed up almost immediately but it was back in the day of "don't use your real name or they will steal your identity" so I ended up with heronblazer@hotmail.com . I wonder if it was ever recycled and someone else still uses it now? 🤣

I have a hotmail from the late 90s when I was in secondary school but I got a gmail when I left uni because of that whole hotmail is unprofessional thing. They’re both a variant of first name last name@ but I use the gmail way more - initially because it got less spam, then because the interface was easier and now because of the whole outlook signed in account thing which means it clashes with the stuff I use at work (and so having it open on a tab while I’m working isn’t practical.
thorn312@reddit
My mother set my Hotmail email address up when I left junior school and had little business cards printed that I could give out to my friends to keep in touch🥹

silobass@reddit
Yes Hotmail here too of course. I was going travelling in 1998 and someone said their Dad would set one up for me. I asked how much it would cost and couldn't believe it when they said it was free. Amazing times, I couldn't believe such a free service existed!
Sadly I can't remember my log in and I expect it's expired by now. I think I've tried to recover it before without any luck. May try again later now.

Tulip Winsock FTW.. mate of mine wrote some of the client stack (he was the one who first showed me the web back about then)
Technically I had an internet routable email address at work (I configured our sendmail rules for our UUCP connection to send messages between offices) but it was essentially an internal email system only.
sqwz@reddit
I was on demon too, and cix before that (cix.compulink.co.uk) Cix was a dialup conferencing system, and I wasn't even aware for a long time that my address there was a real Internet email address, because I didn't know anyone else with an email address until I found newsgroups.
I also used a very early email system in the early 80s, forgotten what it was. I think I had to access it via BT's PSS (packet switched service)
terahurts@reddit
I was also a CIX user (via my Amiga 1200) around the same time. The only person I could email was one of my friends at University who had a JANET address.
Very fond memories of CIX, I was active in the Terry Pratchett forum where he'd occasionally pop in, as well as some gaming ones where well known figures in the industry would also interact with us plebs. For some reason the user 'WavyDavy' is ringing a bell as well.

Imma tell you what my first full email address was because I haven’t used it in well over 20+ years but first a brief introduction.
First week of secondary school, September 1998. The classroom is kitted out with all brand spanking new MS98 PC’s and the whole class is told to go on to Hotmail and create an email address because of course email is the future.
Having no creativity to come up with something unusual or the common sense to use my name I decided to go with student@hotmail.com - of course it was taken & if someone did that now it would probably student745987 that would be the lowest possible. The lowest possible in September 98? student6@hotmail.com - only 6 other people had thought of it before me 🤣

Jeggasyn@reddit
One thing I never knew the answer to (and probably a stupid question) - was that dial up tone the actual sound of the electronic hardware modem or a predetermined sound that a buzzer made on the device?
spffngly@reddit
It's your modem talking to whatever machine it's connecting too (phone lines carry audio data, so modems have to make noises too to transfer the data). Sounds like nonsense to us, but apparently the screeching actually means something to the machines. If I remember correctly from accidentally getting a fax on a normal phone, faxes machines also make similar noises.
Mithent@reddit
It playing it out of a speaker during connection is a diagnostic thing, though - of course it actually talks over the phone line, not into your house. If you had the wrong number or if it was engaged etc. then you'd hear something other than the expected handshake which might help you understand what went wrong rather than just seeing 'connection failed' or such.
spffngly@reddit
Clever!

Mine is still Hotmail, I've had it for so long that I'd gotten locked out of it like a decade ago and had to phone them to tell them I didn't know the details to sign into my backup because that was like a decade old at that time and literally just a backup but I'd made it when I was like 16 so couldn't remember that one off password.
The guy asked me my security question which was something like who are your favourite historical figures and I told him I was pretty certain I'd put down Jessica Alba and Hitler, needless to say I changed my security question incase this ever occurred again. However he was impressed by my knowledge of my 150k+ emails that I'd never deleted.

My first was demon.co.uk - and at that time it was easy to hoover up any names from the catholic church's handy demonology lists, so variously, metatron, belphegor, axxon were my usernames and maybe a couple of others.
Later on I moved to claranet, pipex etc as services improved. Eventually, after about 10 years paying for domain names, battling with mailservers etc meant that I succumbed to hotmail and gmail which are so much easier for individuals.
At first I had the odd distinction of being one of the first two domestic consumers with broadband on the Fulham exchange, and the BT installation engineers were so excited that for a few months they used to ring me up to make sure that everything was working nicely!

My very first one was a Demon one through school back in 1995. The main drawback was the obviously limited access to it which I could only do at certain points of the school day.
However I created a Yahoo account around 1998 which I could access whenever I was somewhere with the Internet (which tended to be cybercafes outside of school). I still keep it active as an emergency backup.
Later on I also created a Hotmail account (also still active but not my primary account). And when we finally got the Internet at home I ended up with an AOL account (which no longer exists).
I also signed up for a talk21.com account at some point (which no longer exists) for reasons that I can't remember.

I still have access to my old one, it's where my Microsoft account is tied to and still get the occasional email to it, but most goes through my married name now. I'm now divorced (kept the name to be the same as my daughter and avoid the faff) and wonder if I'll be able to get another one if/when I marry again lol.

Yeah, that pay by the minute thing was gash. Especially because you had to pay both your ISP's per-minute charge and the per-minute phone call cost.
