What did you do for your 30th?

DEADB33F@reddit

My birthday is around Halloween / bonfire night so my 30th was a huge bonfire party. I have a small digger so stripped the grass & topsoil off an area of a field then had a local company drop me off several lorry loads of pallets & scrap wood (company is owned by a friend of mine). That was the fire sorted. Everyone was asked to bring one big cake firework with them (one that you light and it fires a bunch of stuff off for a minute or two) or a pack of decent sized rockets. We attached all the fireworks to several pallets then I used pyrotechnic fuse to link all the fireworks on each pallet together ...I used to do model rocketry so had a bunch of this lying around. This meant that each pallet was a 'light & forget' self contained unit. We lit two pallets at a time and I think there were six in total. Plus had one person solely firing off rockets the entire time. The invite said some drinks would be provided but if you didn't want beer then to bring your own. I hooked up a couple kegs of beer, pre-cooked a ton of jacket spuds, and did a huge pan of hotdogs. Invited everyone on my FB friends list and a load of others (300-odd people total). I think around 100 showed up and most brought fireworks. --- It took some organising but was a good do.

I remember the time when that was an actual saying. "I can't stay any longer ...five & drive and all that" "Or eight if it's late" ...was the usual retort, suggesting to stay for a few more and drive home after midnight when there'll be fewer other cars on the road.

How common is it for someone to not drive in your social circle? And how common are auto license holders that you know of?

DEADB33F@reddit

I don't even think it's so much stigma from other drivers as it is insurance companies. It's outdated nowadays, but back when autos were much rarer it always used to be the case that auto-only drivers tended to crash far more often than manual drivers. ..insurance companies used to reason that this was because folks who are poor drivers and too uncoordinated to pass a manual test would be more likely to take an auto one (as it's "easier"). --- This is bollocks nowadays but it still factors into insurance rates, which is why people still want to pass on a manual, even if they know they'll only ever drive an auto or an EV.

My FB friends list hovers around 150 (I remove folks I rarely see and try to keep it around that number). Ages range from late 20s to late 50s (I'm mid-40s). There are only two that I know of who don't drive and one of those is taking lessons. ...No idea who has auto vs manual, but I'm guessing very few of the former.

In some areas there's more pedestrians being hit & injured by ebikes than by cars (despite cars being orders of magnitude more prevalent). ...not sure what the police's rules are for pulling ebikes in Ireland, but in my city (UK E-Midlands) you're only likely to get tugged if they catch you running a red or riding on the pavement. If you're riding sensible they don't really give a shit. And I'm fine with that.

I'd imagine it's because for a given payload capacity they're about half the fuel efficiency of a plane. Granted, they're more efficient than a helicopter, but can't hover or land & take off from a tiny area like a helicopter can.

I used to check my tyre pressures weekly and oil monthly. I still check the oil regularly (20-y/o truck so always a good idea to keep on top of things).

DEADB33F@reddit

Do it, but see if they'll let you alternate between working mon-thurs one week then tues-fri the next. ...that way you get a four day weekend every other week. I used to work this pattern and it means you can take a four night city break every other week if you wanted to without ever taking a single day's holiday (I used to use it to regularly go camping, visit friends/relatives etc). So much better than a fixed four-day schedule.

I often use park & ride when going to the hospital as that's usually during the work-week when I'll be in the truck. Over what area have you noticed this? If it' just on the local streets around your home it could all be down to on dickhead. It only takes one inconsiderate person to move in to the neighbourhood and suddenly you have 2+ dog shits per day on streets near your house (14 a week, 60 a month, etc). ...And then multiply that again by the number of dogs they have. --- It doesn't take many people to really shit up an area. Even if 99.9% are behaving perfectly.

Why do you think there are many small towns/villages in Europe that are dying, but not in The UK?

Posted by fleetwood_mag@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 218 comments

DEADB33F@reddit

UK's villages & market towns are booming because by & large they're in relatively close proximity to where the jobs are in the cities; and the fact that our large cities are increasingly becoming shitholes makes village & small-town life more desirable. I'm not gonna blame crime or immigration for cities becoming shitholes, but they're often cited as push factors that make people with decent incomes want to move away to outlying towns & villages.

It's a nightmare when you're not used to it, but humans are nothing if not adaptable and your body shouldn't take too long to become accustomed to it. --- But yeah, essentials... Suncream, wide brimmed hat, plenty of hydration throughout the day (not just during breaks), lots of rest breaks (short is fine but they need to be frequent). Nice to have... a change of cloths at lunch time, another change to go home in. A nice luxury... Maybe one of those waist fan things that clip onto your belt (they're great and can easily run all day).

Are there any North or East facing rooms you can sleep in? Those will typically be cooler in the evening. Get a small fan. ...I bought a small USB-C rechargeable one for camping last year that will run for 36+ hours on its internal 12000mAh battery (that's on low power, which is all you need when it's on your bedside table). On low power it's also near enough silent. --- I have a small 240v desk fan as well but don't use it nowadays as even on its lowest setting it pushes a bit too much air and is a bit noisy.

Next time you give your kitchen a revamp, get two dishwashers. That way you barely need any other cupboard space at all. ...As you dirty your dishes & cutlery put them in the left dishwasher. When full, set it going. Then take things out of the left dishwasher as you need them and put them straight in the right dishwasher when dirty. When left is empty and right is full set the right one going then reverse the process. etc, etc. --- This has a few advantages... * Now there's never any arguments over whose turn it is to load or unload the dishwasher. * You might need just one more cupboard for pans and rarely used dishes, but everything else always lives in one of the two dishwashers, which saves space if you only have a small kitchen. * You have a backup dishwasher should one ever break down. * If you have a ton of people over you have two dishwashers! ...so can wash all the stuff from a dinner for like 20 people all in one go.

This is also true with the new F35. Once it's fully loaded with ordinance on the exterior pylons it's totally unable to supercruise and its stealth features become pretty much worthless. It also won't be able to VTOL when the external pylons are loaded. This kinda nullifies the planes supposed three main advantages over existing aircraft. --- Hell, even without an external loadout the F35 is only able to do a limited supercruise at mach 1.2 for 150 miles. Not exactly 'next-gen'.

Pies are easy. But buy the puff pastry for the top (that bit *is* a ballache). The shortcrust for the bottom and filling is easy enough to make though. If you can make a stew you can make a pie, and stew is just about the easiest most foolproof thing possible in the realm of cooking. Main tip is to never just make one pie. Make like half a dozen at least and freeze the rest for when you're feeling lazy.

What are your thoughts on dogs in restaurants/cafes?

Posted by BurnsyWurnsy@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 850 comments

DEADB33F@reddit

I take my dogs to pubs & beer gardens. I wouldn't take a dog to a restaurant though. And I wouldn't sit in a beer garden next to a table where folks are eating if I had the dogs (if someone came and sat on a table next to \*us\* when we're already there then that's their choice so is fine). My dogs are extremely well behaved working dogs though. They'll just lie down and chill out if told to. Eg... https://preview.redd.it/1uw9csagx2zg1.png?width=771&format=png&auto=webp&s=4df2c8f5e1b79d926201321436d30bfed531d3b1 ...this pub has a completely separate bar area where dogs aren't allowed (which is a great compromise IMO) NB. Dogs that run around out of control, yap, bark, jump up on people, etc. shouldn't be out anywhere unless its to actively work on their training & behaviour.
