Where are these giant cars coming from?

So many cars are large "4x4"s now (made by Porsche, BMW, Skoda, Hyundai, etc.). I live in a city and there isn't much need for them as far as I can tell. I also know the local council is increasing the standard parking bay size to accommodate the shift to bigger cars. So it's not just me. I read an article recently that on average they're more expensive, less fuel efficient, harder to fix, and have less boot space (amazingly) than the old style estate car of the matching brand. Anyone who owns one, could you enlighten me?

Yeah but how much road space a car takes isn't relevant, as long as it fits on the roads with enough safety margin, which all legal SUVs do. Anyone that feels uncomfortable because they have to share space with vehicles larger than a fiat panda is just an incompetent driver.

The 'safety' factor also has a compounding effect where the more SUVs there are on the road the less safe it feels in a normal car so more and more people switch, which makes it feel even less safe etc etc

They've reached a point where they're kind of a status symbol. Of middle class mediocrity, but a status symbol nonetheless. People are convinced they have to have an SUV if they have kids, but that's bullshit. In the 1980s you didn't even have to have 4 doors if you had kids. It's more of a keeping up with Joneses sort of thing. Personally I hate them. They're massive, frequently these days they are silent, often they're driven by stressed women who can barely see over the steering wheel and who park wherever they feel like, and above all they're just completely unnecessary.

Rained on? Safety features may have improved but that goes for all cars, not just SUVs. Your kids are just as safe in a regular car. They are more likely to get hit by a monstrous 4x4 though whose bonnet is higher than they are.

Any car people I know hate SUVs. It's not about the vehicle itself. They're a status symbol of a kind of lifestyle. Married couple, 2.4 kids, middle management jobs with meaningless titles, new build suburban house in a soulless new build development. Bonus points if you get a personalised number plate in the hope that's the thing which will finally cure the howling emptiness inside.

My partner convinced me we needed to swap our hatchback for an SUV type car when we had a kid, we swapped from a Giulietta to a Peugeot 2008 which is barely an SUV imo. I miss our G so much, it was a fantastic car and there was plenty of room for the kid + kid stuff. The Peugeot is easier to get a child in and out of admittedly, that's the only noticeable advantage imo, an otherwise boring car haha.

Those Peugeot 2008s are everywhere, I assume they're the cheapest SUV around. I'll be honest I hate them. They look like they're made of plastic. A Puma or similar sized car is big enough for a family, if extra room is genuinely needed a decent estate car is a better vehicle than all the available SUVs put together.

Yeah they're very common. I don't hate it I just don't love it either. In their defence they're a solid reliable car and very economical, we're getting 20mpg more on average than the Alfa, which we need as we're a high-mileage family atm. Yes we need the extra room for when we go camping so I'd like to upgrade to a decent estate car next, something long and low-down, either a BMW or a Volvo I'm leaning towards.

Cars back then had less mod cons and more internal space. They were also very unsafe. Safety takes up space, so if you have kids and want a safe car with the equivalent internal space of an 80s/90s banger you'll need to get a proper SUV (not pseudo SUV like TRoc or Puma which are essentially tiny hatchbacks on stilts).

Simply not true. All modern cars have those enhanced safety features, not just SUVs. SUVs are however significantly more dangerous to anyone they hit. If you want extra space you can get an estate car. Your attitude that you "have to have an SUV because kids" is exactly what I'm talking about.

Yes, and those features take up space. Modern cars are very cramped. We have a Ford Puma, its an 'SUV' (yeah right), except its not, its a Ford Fiesta with a different body shape. Its also tiny inside and totally unsuitable for anything other than short journeys with 2 kids. We use our actual SUV for doing anything remotely practical.

Ive not cast any aspersions on your situation and have tried to keep this matter of fact and on topic. My children aren't enormous, their car seats are and im over 6ft and simply couldn't fit in our Hyundai I10 and the follow up Ford Puma we purchased. We tried the 'small' cars that this Reddit sub seems to love and they don't work for most parents. When a debate descends to ad hominem comments you know its run its course but thanks for the engagement anyway.

In America, the government emissions test s based on vehicle size. The larger the vehicle, the more emissions it can produce. With tightening standards, it became more difficult to pass the tests with smaller vehicles, so they were cut from their ranges.

Everyone wants cars with elevated driving position that is easy to get into, which means that everyone prefers crossovers such as the Nissan Qashqai and VW Tiguan to a traditional estate/saloon car, which is why cars such as the Ford Mondeo and Vauxhall insignia are no longer in production.

Some of it's that. Some of it is that for electric cars the higher SUV shape makes sense as you can have the batteries under the floor. Some of it is that once everyone else is driving a taller vehicle, people want to be sitting higher up themselves so they can see ahead in traffic and aren't being blinded by headlights.

Think the crossover trend was before mass adoption of EVs but I think EVs and how battery location has exacerbated the issue. The light issue I think is more to do with every car having LEDs rather than the old fashioned halogen headlamps.

Just curious for your input. I drive an SUV, but other than when it's the only car available it's almost exclusively used for farm work. Towing multiple trailers through fields, filling with hay or straw bales, the odd animal if I need to get to vets in a pinch. Load bags grain, getting through fields when the farm tracks get wet or flooded. I have a ford about a mile away that floods multiple times every year that I need to get through daily. I don't do any of what you've described at all. But because it happens to be an SUV I'm now I just automatically a bad and inconsiderate driver? Just your thoughts, what's an alternative for me?

This is a bit disingenuous. You are describing a work vehicle. The same way that a lorry can be obstructive, but as they are a work vehicle that isn't a problem. Entirely depends on the vehicle a COB truck or Van with a relatively flat front/VW camper etc has better visability up front than say a Fiat Stylo. Our Toyota Alphard is a doddle to drive, turns and squeeze around. It's certainly easier to reverse than my Mr2 was. Similar to my 69 Fury, a monumental oil tanker of a car but easy to drive, lots of visability, decent turning circle. It was just hampered by the fact it was a 50 year old car. So hardly crash safe.

They are unnecessarily large, impractical for most consumers, and make the road a less pleasant and safe place for everyone else to be. I also strongly dislike driving them. I much prefer being closer to the ground — it’s a better driving experience and I feel better connected to what I’m doing. I currently drive a saloon, and it’s about time to switch for a new car (new to me, probably something 3 - 4 years old). Looking at Volvos for overall comfort. Heart says V60/V90, brain says XC60/XC90. Why? I have two young kids. All the simulated Euro NCAP rating in the world isn’t going to help you if you’re driving a 1,500kg petrol estate and a badly driven 3 tonne electric 7 seat SUV smashes into you. Your car (and occupants) are always going to take the brunt of that. Personally, I’m not sure I want to stand on principle as far as my children’s safety is concerned. So yes, it really is an arms race. Some regulatory or government intervention would help here. The best reason to own an SUV is that everyone else has decided to own one too.

They're also far more dangerous to other road users. The fronts are so high that the driver has a huge blind spot where a child might be in front of them. I also suspect the push to get ADAS stuff into every car also makes people lazier about actually driving properly. "The computer will do it, so why do I need to pay attention?". I just moved from an estate to a smaller SUV (Skoda Octavia to Skoda Karoq). I nearly went with the Kodiaq for the larger boot space but they were quite a bit more expensive. The main reason was my back was hurting getting into the Octavia, I wanted a higher up car to get in easier and also we are planning on having kids soon so my girlfriend wanted a car that is easy to put kids into their seats etc. But we’re also mid renovation and majority of materials I can pick up/take to the tip in the larger car. I will miss my Octavia though, absolute workhorse. Did 80k miles in 5 years and I got a 2 seater sofa in the back of that thing. But my mates company Ford Ranger is way too big. Doesn’t fit into any parking spaces. But it’s like luxury inside. Why cramp into a small car when you can have luxury. Just know how to drive the thing.

My Grandfather always owned a 4x4 - and lived in a Hamlet in the arse end of nowhere… Such has been the branding in more recent years, however, that you now have a wave of drivers in urban areas who ultimately don’t need vehicles of that size unless they’re working in the trades or their immediate family is above the UK average… In addition to this, many of them cannot actually handle the dynamics of the vehicle and truly drive like absolute dog shit.

Customer demand. More safety features etc. A 106 back in the day didn't even have much side impact protection. Yet a volvo 850 even came with side impact airbags. Still, a lot of these cars aren't really that much larger than the large cars of old. A 6.75 Bentley being on of the biggest at nearly 5.5m long Average car size today is 4.4 m long and 1.8/1.9 wide but they are getting taller, likely impacted by the batteries for EVs I assume? My toyota Soarer is 35 years old and 4.8m long and 1.8m wide. People don't really see it as big because of the relative low roofline. Nobody is moaning about my super large car.

I think it's rather silly. Some people get them because they think they're bigger, when they're not. A friend of ours had a baby, sold their fiesta for a qashqai, and realised that it was pretty much the same size inside. Why they went ahead with it, i dont know. They sold it and got a "bigger car"...a Focus. Personally, i dislike SUVs, but accept they are here to stay. I would love the UK to adopt Japan's Kei car classification of small cars. Cheaper to run, buy, tax, insure, park, and less demanding on the environment.

I’m 6’6” so have to shop around a lot for cars as I have to see what I can actually fit in. I find small cars use space really carefully and are usually roomy inside. Big cars are often wasteful with the interior space with massive plastic trims. My current car is a Kia EV4 and it feels bigger inside than a car double the size.

Yeah that may have something to do with it, but tall vehicles are much more likely to roll over in an accident, and if you roll, then you're very likely to have serious injuries. Large cars are safer for the passengers of the large car, but you don't need a tall car to get that. Also, ppl think tall cars are automatically safer and larger, when often it's an illusion.

I’m afraid the article you have read is totally incorrect. The cars are larger due to the many safety features including crumple zones, side impact protection and air bags. Many are EV and my SUV is a hybrid that does an average of 64mpg.

We do a lot of children activities where renting a large car each time for multiple days cost just as much over the year as paying for a car. We can also load friends and grannies now instead of taking two cars and we do this often.

batteries are huge, if you want to go more than 180 miles on a single charge then you need a really big battery and that means a big car. pedestrian impact regulations means the bonnet needs to be higher so for the proportions to be correct the sides need to be higher too. these combined mean most cars are now styled as crossovers.

We have 2 kids. Modern 360 safety seats take up more room than the less ergonomically designed seats of the past. This means to drive in comfort you need more space. We own a dog so family days out require adequate boot space for the pooch, pushchair and other goods. Im over 6ft. I also prefer to be higher off the road for comfort and safety, and prefer to have a spacious, relaxing driving positions. I prefer the higher power of larger cars. Driving a car doesnt have to be a chore. Skoda Enyaq - not a massive car but bigger than average. In contrast I can't drive my partners Ford Puma when the kids are travelling with us as the drivers seat doesnt go back far enough.

Not stupid at all. Cars are always having to incorporate more safety features which take up space in the body, therefore reducing the amount of interior space relative to exterior dimensions. You'll always get people driving something bigger than they need, but those who genuinely need a large vehicle also need somewhere to park.

Had 7 series, S class, 5 series estates, hatchbacks, 3 series saloons and all sorts so not shit cars. They are just perfect for me and do everything I ask of them. A lot of it is padding to make you safer in crashes. I had an old-style Fiat panda (1995) and when it went to the scrapyard, I looked at the modern version which was much bulkier but had less boot space. But survival in a crash was much better as more crumple zones. That car was pretty easy to fix - basic CPU but that was it. Everything else was manual - hand brake a chain, spark plugs easily accessible. My current car has a e-brake, lots of diagnostics, sealed filters. And modern cars continue that trend. My old car wouldn't pass modern safety. I have a 2017 SUV though and it's decent if I hit something but lighter than a lot of modern estates and definitely than a TESLA. It's not a small car and I do feel dwarved by some of the cars on the road. Why do I need a AWD? Well it goes off-road and it was a literal lifesaver when I had to do driving in red storm warning areas as hit black ice and the traction from the unaffected wheels helped me hold the road.

Lots of ways to think about the risks. SUVs are more likely to be in a crash (worse breaking distance), and in a serious crash are more likely to roll (bad news). Lot safer than my previous car which was a 1995 fiat panda. The car is taller but its not longer, heavier or wider than an estate. And the AWD is what I needed as well as a boot with easy access. The barn door helps a lot with loading animal cages. I said decent for a low speed crash which is my primary worry. And yes you need to be very aware of your blind spots but not many people in fields or on motorway at 2am. The children is a worry so tend to park well away from supermarket doors. I can't honestly think when I am otherwise around areas with high child density. My car suits my lifestyle. Most cars wouldn't.

I know - that's sadly why I had to get rid off it in 2017. Well that and rust damage to the floorplan. But I'd previously damaged the ignition coil and blown a thermostat due to off-road driving so seemed if replacing to get something that could handle mud, ruts and most importantly had the weight for driving in storms. The AWD fit the needs and most importantly I could afford it. I would have preferred a Skoda YETI but out of price bracket

I’m an urban dwelling 4x4 owner. My reasons for buying one were: I wanted something fun to drive, which my car definitely is. It accelerates like a missile. I wanted something with higher ground clearance than my previous hatchback, which routinely struggled with potholes and speed bumps. I wanted a car with a comfortable interior and good UI, which it does.

I often use park & ride when going to the hospital as that's usually during the work-week when I'll be in the truck. Cheaper than hospital parking ...which is often full, and only adds a couple mins to the journey (often quicker if the car parks are full and I'd otherwise have to wait around for a space).

Fuel efficiency is a weird one I noticed the other day they seems to have gotten worse not better with new versions of the same cars. We looked at replacing my diesel which gets 62mpg with the newer model petrol hybrid but it only returns 48mpg. I owned the previous generation of my car too as a pure petrol engine and that would do 50mpg.

People are buying them so they must want them. I drive a van-shaped car (renault trafic). It seats 9 (including driver) and has good boot space, or seats six with amazing boot space, or 3 and it's a van. The seats in the back are really easy to take in and out. You get good visibility because it's high, but it's really easy to manoeuvre because the walls aren't 3' thick and full of pointless sticky-out bits. And it's a 1.6l diesel so reasonably good on fuel efficiency. And according to the DVLA it's a car, so I pay car prices at tolls and can visit the tip without them thinking I'm commercial and can park in "no vans" car parks then get fined then threaten them with legal action because they were told it's a car when they did their dvla lookup to find my address.

Driving higher *feels* better and safer. Having a bigger car is a status symbol (see Land and Range Rovers). People are influenced by US media, who have larger everything, so also want their larger cars. People see a bigger car and think it will carry more stuff than their shorter car, [because...](https://pbs.twimg.com/media/GaHot4CWsAAuTdI.png). Most people don't drive because they enjoy it, but because they have to, so want comfort over everything else. Marketing leads people to think they need the bigger car when they get a family, as if families didn't exist 20 years ago, and children aren't 2-3ft so don't need the leg room for a 6'3" adult. People are fatter, so find it harder to get down into cars than up into them. Mobility vehicles lean to the large vehicles because of the above. Large vehicles were acceptable to charge higher prices for (see the premium points above), so when the companies wanted to make more money per car, making new SUV and Crossover models was the way to do it, rather than trying to up the prices of a Hatchback. Finally, electric cars actually do need to be larger because they need to carry as much battery around as possible. An easy way of doing that is taking a saloon car and lifting it, with stuffing batteries underneath. See the recent Ferrari Luce for how they need to make a car bigger if they want to stick batteries in it.

market forces and economy of scale. people want bigger cars, and it's easier to make bigger cars for a profit than it is smaller ones

Depends on how far back you want to go, but, raw materials are put through a variety of processes to make components that can be put together to be made into cars
