Do American high school kids really make out in the school hallways?

Posted by zoezie@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 441 comments

that-Sarah-girl@reddit

The movies underplayed it compared with my early 90s highschool. We had a few couples who really got into it! And the teachers basically ignored the hallways completely unless there was fighting.

Wait, was King of the Hill set in the same time it was made? I always thought it was supposed to be set in the 90s. The hair and clothes were all out of date when it was on.

To score 240 on what? What people are you talking about? If you know people well enough to know their scores on whatever this test is, why are you asking random Americans about it instead of asking those people?

Would it be better for the US presidential election if everyone's votes were equal, regardless of which state they're from?

Do most Americans have those huge fridges?

Posted by Whole-Sushka@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 2894 comments

that-Sarah-girl@reddit

If you can walk to a store at all you're probably not in an area most Americans would consider rural. Stuff is way farther apart here. Also everything is big. The store is big. The fridge is big. The car is big. Australia is the only other place I've been where things are big like they are here.

I know a lot of people who are not struggling at all, and even then, the influencer life is drastically more expensive than any of them are living. That influencer life is very weird and mostly fake.

I did one in my late 30s and I looked so young on that boat that people were asking about my major 😂 It's a pretty great set-up for traveling. But if you want people under 65 to hang out with you need to bring them with you.

Do not feel guilty. Art prices are usually drastically higher. A new pair of shoes is $100 average. Not expensive ones, just regular shoes. I think any art worth having is worth the cost of a pair of shoes.

We used to have knockwurst in stores when I was a kid (40 years ago) but I haven't seen them in a long time. Almost all hotdogs and sausages come in plastic in America. I've never seen a jar sausage. I've also never seen tubular chips.

We should normalize this. It's not just you. Tall people help A LOT. As an unremarkable height person, I'd be very happy to help get things from low shelves, and I wish I had thought about it sooner.

Thanks this is great info! And glad to hear your transition to college went well! My cousin was in a very rural high school and we thought everything was fine until she got to college and was actually not prepared and had to do a few remedial classes they offered specifically for kids who went to lousy high schools.

This is so dramatically different from my experience. I hope you don't mind if I ask you a whole bunch of questions. Did you take a language? Did you play an instrument? Did you get a second year of any particular science or history topic? Did you get to calculus? Did your school have a library? Did your town have a library? Were you taught how to research and write a term paper? Where did you go to take college entrance exams? Did you feel ready, academically, when you got to college? Were you able to do any sports where you competed against other schools? Did you have any school parties or dances? Did you go on field trips? I imagine in some ways you'd get an amazing education, because you'd get so much individual instruction, and the teachers could really tailor things to their particular students. But it's got to be super hard to have enough staff and resources to cover a wide enough range of topics for a high schooler.

Clarifying for non Americans, Megabus is a long distance bus service from city to city. And yeah, all their buses seem to be double deckers. Luggage downstairs and the bathroom and driver and a few seats. And then the whole upstairs is seats.

Meat, coffee, bread, eggs, and milk are pretty obviously much more. Premade stuff that used to be weirdly cheap like crackers and chips are pricey now. And almost all produce is up especially citrus. Basics like toilet paper and shampoo have also gone up.

Or the reverse. Someone might name the things that you can help yourself to. Drinks and snacks are in the fridge, help yourself. Now you know you can take a beer or a string cheese but don't take the raw ingredients for tomorrow's dinner.

Forgive me for saying this, because I am a DC local and I completely agree that Maryland is the right place to eat crabs! But also, while you're on the West Coast, try the dungeness crab too. It's a completely different species of crab and it tastes different and it's also good.
