We have double decker commuter trains (LIRR) as well!
Fun fact about the LIRR (Long Island Railroad). It is the busiest commuter railroad in North America and is also one of the world's few commuter systems that run 24/7 year-round
WowsrsBowsrsTrousrs@reddit
When I was in HS, I worked in the city in the summer, took the train to work every day. We used to call it the Snailroad. It was jammed - usually no seats left when I got on - and not terribly fast - but still better than amy other way of getting into the city. It came into Penn Station, of course, and I worked almost directly across from Grand Central Station and the Pan Am building (yes I'm old) so depending on the weather, it was a brisk walk or a sardine-like and slow bus to where I worked. Growing up where everybody used public transportation as a matter of course (well, except the very, very rich) was interesting, and finding out that most other places didn't work that way was a disappointment.
Interesting_Scar9493@reddit
Las Vegas has them on the strip
EightOhms@reddit
This is where I've seen them. Wouldn't ride one to save my life.
97PG8NS@reddit
May I ask why? I've ridden the double deckers on the strip in Vegas many times and they're always clean, fare is strictly enforced and security is very tight.
EightOhms@reddit
This happened right after I moved to Vegas.

Only been once but rode the bus as well and found it to be convenient and comfortable. The one way fare is kinda high, but the day pass is reasonable if you use it more than twice. Beats walking in the heat anyway.

I live in a college town (Davis, CA) that uses them for public transit around the city. Some are classic old buses from London. Some are shiny and new. Sometimes you see parents talking little kids to ride the upper level just for fun.

Fantastic-Pear6241@reddit
The more I hear about Seattle the more Washington sounds like the UK more so than New England
garden__gate@reddit
As a New England native who lives in Seattle, the two regions are surprisingly similar. But I would say New England is a lot more like the UK, especially once you get out of the urban cores. New England is full of old villages, while the areas outside the cities in the PNW are more American with sprawly suburbs and sparsely populated rural areas.
Fantastic-Pear6241@reddit
The human geography of New England is much closer, but the meteorological geography of PNW seems more similar from what I've seen
Top_Forever_2854@reddit
Yes, both on the west coast of continents, which has something to do with it as I vaguely recall from school
garden__gate@reddit
Yeah, that’s true.
AustynCunningham@reddit
Yeah we got them in Spokane last year, just from downtown out to Eastern Washington University in Cheney, I’m not a metro user but went down to take the maiden voyage out for a day of walking around and hitting up breweries.
A few months later it crashed into an underpass and was decommissioned for a month, but now it’s back up and running.
Calculusshitteru@reddit
Since when? They didn't have these in Seattle when I left about 20 years ago.
Airlik@reddit
And in Bellevue…
gnirpss@reddit
Spokane has them too. I've never had the occasion to ride one (my usual route uses the long bendy buses), but I've always wanted to.
Basicly-Inevitable@reddit
Same in the Bay Area. Company busses that pick up employees so they don't have to drive to work.
SirAlthalos@reddit
They also use them a lot for the express buses that runs down to Lynnwood for the light rail into Seattle

NCErin@reddit
My knee jerk reaction was no, although I do actually recall seeing some sight-seeing double decker buses (without roofs, so they somehow don’t register in my head as being a double decker) in NYC.
To be honest, I’m from North Carolina and we barely have buses here. We do, but the time required to get anywhere on one is a bit excessive. They’re usually only used if there’s no other alternative.

Washington state has double decker transit busses, but I don’t believe they are used basically anywhere else though.
Seattle mostly just has Alexander-Dennis Enviri500’s, some of them are labeled ‘the double tall’ and have a fun coffee motif
washtucna@reddit
Spokane, too!
thomsenite256@reddit
I didnt even know that. The regular KCM buses are are standard transits from what I've seen but I've never taken them outside of seattle region.
OfficeChair70@reddit
As far as I know they still come into downtown, Sound Transit and Community Transit (Snohomish County) operate them, and they bring them all the way into Westlake. Usually the double deck busses operate on routes north of downtown from the U-District up to the southern end of Skagit County. It’s all coach busses and regular transit busses south of downtown and out into Pierce and Thurston Counties.
thomsenite256@reddit
That makes sense. I dont think Ive ever been on a sound transit bus. But I am like a mile from a light rail station so I usually take that or the Rapid Ride if I need a bus.
Fancy-Restaurant4136@reddit
Davis California, the university bus system has repurposed red double decker buses from London.
cguess@reddit
right hand drive and all? Would seem like it could only load/unload on one way streets then
Fancy-Restaurant4136@reddit
I rode them many times as a student, but it's been a while. There was a driver and there was a flag staff person who stepped down into the street first and kept an eye out for traffic.
OfficeChair70@reddit
That’s really cool, I’m at Arizona State University and our campus busses are just bog standard coach busses, with big AC units.

cozybear3636@reddit
Yes for traveling sometimes. I used to go from Philly to State College both are rather large cities. State college is smaller like 200-500k. Philly is like 2-5 million depending on how you count the population. So the buses were pretty full. We had double decker buses that go between the 2 cities.

thomsenite256@reddit
They have megabus in some other countries.
Broad_Pineapple727@reddit
Has anyone seen one of these recently? Their parent company went bankrupt a couple years ago and I don't believe they are still operating any routes in the USA. They will still sell you tickets on other bus lines, but those aren't double-deckers.
hayleybeth7@reddit
Huh. I still get emails from them all the time because I’ve used them a handful of times.

The University of Kentucky ("UK"—get it?) had an old 1950s bus from the UK from the early 1970s until maybe 2008, it was named "Old Blue" and used for campus tours.
heybud_letsparty@reddit
Yes. There used to be (maybe still is) a company called megabus that offered super cheap bus fare around the country. I used it a lot in my late teens/early 20s. Bus trips were usually $10-20 each way. I used it a lot to go from San Francisco to LA and all around the midwest. Great way to travel cheap when I was young and broke. But they were all double decker busses.
The most memorable time was going from SF to LA and I sat next to a guy who just got done with a 20 year prison sentence. He had nothing to his name and was heading to live with a family member. I had just got an iPod shuffle with the touch screen that I used while skateboarding and had an old regular iPod shuffle that was loaded with punk rock and rap. So I gave the old one to him with some headphones. Dude was so appreciative and happy to kick back for that bus ride with some music.

A number of cities have them, primarily as express commuter buses (which don't make very many stops). They're also much larger and longer than the UK version (which are made for everyday urban transit that stops several times along the route).
Ravenna178@reddit
Yes they have those as tour buses in Los Angeles
tuson77@reddit
Yes, they tried a few briefly in San Francisco maybe 25 years ago. Sitting in the upper deck was cool but the seats were narrower than that a regular bus and the 2 passengers were uncomfortably close.
badtux99@reddit
The modern double decker buses are widely used in the SF Bay area. Aside from the Google buses most of which are double decker, for example AC Transit runs double decker buses from Alameda County to the TransBay Terminal in San Francisco. MegaBus and FlixBus also run them from the Central Valley to San Francisco where they dump you off near the TransBay Terminal. They look nothing like the quaint tourist buses so you may have overlooked them.
tuson77@reddit
I haven't lived in the Bay Area since 2003 and I only remember the red ones running on Geary Blvd. It was a funny experience sitting so close and people were bemused. Thanks for the info ..

See in the present tense? I don't think they've run since 2024 when the company went bankrupt. But I could be wrong; I just know they don't run near me anymore. (The company will sell you tickets still, but on the east coast they're just Peter Pan buses, single-decker.)

Random_Reddit99@reddit
No, there aren't enclosed municipal double decker buses in LA because they don't have the volume of passengers that the unique East Bay commuter population requires with protected stops where a bus can idle long enough to give upper deck passengers enough time to get on and off.
LA has determined that they need more buses running at a greater frequencies, and stopping at more stops because there isn't a single mass of residents going to a single downtown area at predictable times. They use extra-long articulating buses with more doors to allow for quicker boarding along its busiest corridors.
Double decker buses are a novelty in LA, used for events, filming, or tours. they're not practical as municipal public transport.
badtux99@reddit
MegaBus and FlixBus beg to differ. As does Foothill Transit, which operates electric double-decker buses, specifically on the Silver Streak line that connects San Gabriel/Pomona Valley to Downtown LA. You are correct that transit agencies in the US prefer bendy buses for faster boarding and better handicapped access, but bendy buses aren't appropriate for long distance high speed limited stop routes because of their slower top speed (they top off at around 55mph) and cumbersome handling (they have a tendency to jackknife at higher speeds).
Random_Reddit99@reddit
I'll concede to Foothill Transit as a public transit line that I didn't realize had added double deckers to their fleet (even if their route is more of an inter-city model)...but Mega and Flix are private companies exclusively running inter-city routes and charters, rather than the scheduled urban municipal routes as I was talking about.
MegaBus actually tried pitching their double deckers to the studios as a shuttle, but like municipal fleets, we generally need smaller vehicles running more frequently that a single van can take off with one passenger rather than waiting for 50 people to board, as well as being able to access residential neighborhoods....and if for use as a picture vehicle, we're more likely going with a typical red London bus unless they're specifically paying for a brand integration.

I thought this was a thread about buses in general, not just buses running local on-city routes.

Yes. Former BIL had a bachelor party on one. Denver,CO. The idea was to have the driver, drive us around town bar hopping while having strippers on the bus as well. But one of the strippers got car sick and we had to go to one of the friend’s house. It was a normal bachelor party there until his friends stole the money the girls were making (stole the hat full of cash). Then my BIL starts a fight with their scrawny bouncer who couldn’t hurt anyone. And they call the cops. So we high tail it outta there on a double decker bus. There’s like 30 of us too. I have no idea what happened to the strippers either. But we ended up in LoDo and my friend and I bailed. Later found out a couple of those dudes got arrested, but not for this, but for peeing off the rooftop of LoDo Bar and Grille, and ultimately peeing on people waiting to get in. Cities prefer the articulated bendy buses for the most part when they need more capacity than a standard bus because of handicapped access concerns. Yes. A biker bar (the orthodontists on Harleys sort of bikers) near where I once lived had a double decker Drunk Bus to drive people home at the end of the night. They could come back the next day to pick up their motorcycles.
I've known several churches and, oddly, Greek restaurants that have had them. They were often sidelined pending repair, but were popular additions to parades when running.
GuairdeanBeatha@reddit

I grew up in Davis, California and the bus system (run by UC Davis but covers a lot of the city in general) has six imported UK double decker buses that they use for general passenger service. Three are vintage 60s buses, and three are newer UK double deckers.
When I was a kid, I think there was ~8 red painted double deckers, all right hand drive. It was kinda normalized to me, but apparently it's super unique.

Various private charters and specialized transit in larger cities, but for the most part, no. Most buses are just one level of seating.
V48runner@reddit
Took a ride on one after we walked from the financial district out to the Golden Gate and across to Marin County. It took us way longer than expected and got lost a bunch of times, because this was before Google maps etc.
We were clearly exhausted and the driver of one of those tour busses noticed and said if we threw some cash in the tip jar, he'd get us back to San Francisco.
It was a 1970s London double decker that had certainly seen better days, but it was a fun impromptu ride that got us back to a nice pub.
Unusual_Memory3133@reddit

I used to go see punk shows at a British pub in south Florida (the owner was a British expat) and they had 2 broken down double-deckers in their parking lot. We'd occasionally sneak inside them to drink our BYOB liquor or smoke weed. They eventually became glorified toilets for the homeless in the area and we're eventually scrapped.
