EpsilonAmber@reddit
Only icecream flavors I've seen only in my state are probably Corn icecream and mint bubblegum.
AnatidaephobiaAnon@reddit
Skyline Chili Ice Cream . It's surprisingly good if you go in expecting it to be the spices and not actual chili flavor. It has a pumpkin spice adjacent flavor and there are even oyster crackers in it that aren't soggy.

Eewwww
justbreathe5678@reddit
Ohio is fired
Concentrate_Previous@reddit
I was just about to say this but have zero desire to try it.
dogsonbubnutt@reddit
it's actually really good, but the first bite is hilarious because your brain goes "holy shit this is skyline chili ice cream"
eyetracker@reddit
They should use a Play Doh style extruder to make it look like spaghetti
Atlas7-k@reddit
I say this as someone who loves a 3-way (double entendre allowed,) that is an abomination.
jethro_bovine@reddit
Its really great.
ilikemints@reddit
for the doubters, it tastes like chai and the crackers give it a nice salty little punch. it definitely should not be as good as it is
WarrenMulaney@reddit
Good god
relikter@reddit
I don't know if it's exclusive to DC (I doubt it), but you can get cherry blossom ice cream during cherry blossom season in the spring.
CricketSimilar863@reddit
Ooh Sakura ice cream is cool
LatheLethe@reddit
What flavor is it though? (cherry blossoms are odorless and tasteless)
relikter@reddit
It's slightly floral and herbal, I guess? It's not a strong taste.
NMS-KTG@reddit
You can also get it during cherry blossom season in nj!
SamScoopCooper@reddit
I don’t know about the states but you can get cherry blossom ice cream in Japan. Like during cherry blossom season there, you can find a cherry blossom flavor of just about anything
shibby3388@reddit
Old Bay.
Unlikely-Strike-8753@reddit
Straight to jail.
CricketSimilar863@reddit
Because of my cousins, Maryland sho nuff loves their old bay!
Suwannee_Gator@reddit
Hear me out, I just moved here and thought it was gross at first, but it’s REALLY GOOD!!! Caramel and old bay vanilla ice cream is my new favorite.
Virlutris@reddit
Like salted caramel plus+ ?
js_eyesofblue@reddit
Thank you, Florida! I feel like is the key ingredient to making the Old Bay + sweet thing work. But as you know by now, us Marylanders try to put Old Bay on everything and when it hits, it becomes a thing on menus across the state.
Lopsided_Panda_775@reddit
This should have more upvotes
mrsrobotic@reddit
Haha in my my mind I went, I'm sure someone around here does an Old Bay ice cream! But I've never had one. Where?!
gard3nwitch@reddit
Yeah, I've had Old Bay popcorn, Old Bay hummus, Old Bay fries, Old Bay beer, but I haven't had Old Bay ice cream before.
ProposalSilent4582@reddit
Old Bay wings?
gard3nwitch@reddit
Well, I don't eat meat now, but I suppose I've had them at some point lol
js_eyesofblue@reddit
The Charmery locations in Baltimore and Towson
Virlutris@reddit
That's a mic drop.
But seriously.
I've only visited, but even so this shouldn't be surprising given Maryland's love affair with Old Bay. They somehow keep surprising me.
Is it mixed with vanilla? It's own thing off the assembly line? Or basically a topping, just Old Bay instead of sprinkles?
I have so many more questions. Jow I want some Old Bay-dusted popcorn ...
hail_to_the_beef@reddit
The concept of Old Bay ice cream is at the best a light hearted joke and at the worst a novelty that nobody really eats.
Our true native desserts are Snowballs (egg custard is the OG flavor) with Marshmallow Fluff, or just a peppermint stick shoved in half a lemon.
mrsrobotic@reddit
Smith Island cake too!
djjolicoeur@reddit
I would definitely eat Smith island cake ice cream
gard3nwitch@reddit
I think Skylite is also a uniquely Maryland flavor
PickleMundane6514@reddit
Nah, I am from MD but I have seen it in NC too.
Stormy261@reddit
Skylight/skylite originated in Baltimore. Because it's now a commercial syrup, you can sell it anywhere. I wouldn't be surprised to find egg custard or skylite in another state.
fuddy_dudley2233@reddit
I love snowballs! Maybe it’s something different, I’m from Tennessee and grew up eating them. It’s a little cream filled chocolate cake inside marshmallow topped usually with shaved coconut.
hail_to_the_beef@reddit
It is something different. Snowballs are like a shaved ice treat here.
fuddy_dudley2233@reddit
Oh interesting. They sound delicious!
js_eyesofblue@reddit
Def not a joke, hon: https://www.tastingtable.com/1596458/old-bay-ice-cream-maryland/
I recommend the Charmery locations in the Baltimore area for their caramel + Old Bay ice cream.
hail_to_the_beef@reddit
Yeah I know it exists but I don’t think it’s particularly popular
js_eyesofblue@reddit
Ok, my bad. I read your comment too fast. It’s definitely not popular in the way that snowballs with marshmallows are. But people do eat it and I think it’s pretty good!
hail_to_the_beef@reddit
Sure, all good. I’m sure there is someone out there ordering it or they wouldn’t make it at all
joystick13@reddit
Speak for yourself bro. When I eat ice cream, there's Old Bay on it.
altarwisebyowllight@reddit
Fuck I miss snowballs. I can get shaved ice here and it's good, but not quite the same texture.
WinchesterFan1980@reddit
The one I tried was a caramel ice cream with Old Bay incorporated in. It was pretty nasty. And I say that as an Old Bay lover.
aricberg@reddit
I need to try this! I found Old Bay caramel corn a couple years ago and it was AMAZING! I love salty/sweet things, but wondered if all the extra herbs and spices would be too weird with all the sweetness, but it was wonderful. I’m in VA so we get a spillover of Old Bay goodness from MD, so I hope this makes it our way sometime!
stalagit68@reddit
I lived in the northern Virginia area from 92 until 2004 when I moved to Georgia. I've seen Old Bay seasoning at Publix, Kroger and Walmart at various times
Vicorin@reddit
Like the seasoning???
FreeKevinBrown@reddit
Hello fellow DMVer. How do you do? Could you spare a cup of Old Bay?
FatWynn@reddit
A whole cup? In this economy?
Sparkle_Rott@reddit
My people have been in Maryland since the 1600s and I’ve never seen Old Bay ice cream lol
I’ll have to keep an eye out just to say I’ve tried it 😊
Sellum@reddit
Old Bay ice cream?
The Potomac is lost. We need to cleanse the region from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.
Innuendo64_@reddit

Uhh thank you! How have I not heard about this place. I love downtown EC.
literarygirl2090@reddit
Omg, I've been to this place before, how come I didn't see this. I need to go next time I visit.
relikter@reddit
Well shit, now I have to drive to Baltimore.
Kinetic_Silverwolf@reddit
I lived near DC for a bit, after living in Alabama, Florida, and Texas. I was ... surprised ... when local folks warned me that Old Bay is spicy.
MajesticBread9147@reddit
It works with vanilla
MLoxxer@reddit
There was a time when oyster ice cream was not uncommon. Heck, I'd try Old Bay ice cream.
Coloradozonian@reddit

Fireweed ice cream here in Alaska

Hanable-13@reddit
Do other states have sweet corn ice cream or just ohio?
Timoth_e@reddit
I don't think such a thing exists.
For example Butter Pecan is considered a "southern" flavor, but you can find it anywhere
inbigtreble30@reddit
Michigan has Superman ice cream, which I've never seen anywhere else.
LastDitchTryForAName@reddit
What flavor is it?
Substantial_Bass_565@reddit
It's completely indescribable.
ghdana@reddit
Perry's makes Superman ice cream which is sold all over NY, but they call is Super Hero.

The only time I have ever had it was in Bisbee, Arizona.
kieka408@reddit
I had this growing up in California in the 80s
Neither_Airline_2224@reddit
Available pretty much all states
1questions@reddit
That’s not true. Live in the PNW and never seen it anywhere. Only heard of it online.
ArchonOfErebus@reddit
Can be bought in Ohio too. A couple of major ice cream companies started producing it over the last couple of years.
squidtheinky@reddit
I see it in Indiana all the time too
1questions@reddit
I live in the PNW and I’ve never seen Superman ice cream.
Atlas7-k@reddit
Given Superman’s birthplace, as it should be.
ArchonOfErebus@reddit

307148@reddit
I used to work at an ice cream shop in North Carolina and we definitely had superman ice cream. I'm convinced that this is another one of those things that midwesterners try to claim as unique to them despite being popular everywhere, like the ope thing
BrainFartTheFirst@reddit
I've seen it here both at grocery stores and at Baskin-Robbins.
minnick27@reddit
See it in the Philly area quite often
Consistent_Post_2558@reddit
I’ve seen it on odd occasions in Texas, eastern PA and around DC.
However, I have never seen anyone eating it and the flavor always looks virtually untouched.
PureMitten@reddit
We also have Mackinac Island Fudge which is fudge swirl everywhere else. But I also absolutely prefer Mackinac Island Fudge ice cream to fudge swirl ice cream, despite being pretty sure they're the same thing
BUBBAH-BAYUTH@reddit
We have it in NC
West-Improvement2449@reddit
We have it in Wisconsin. Blue moon, cherry and vanilla
Timoth_e@reddit
I've seen that and other Midwestern flavors like blue moon (no, not the beer) at an ice cream shop in California. That's kind of my point. There are flavors that are tied to a certain state or region but availability isn't really exclusive
Sea-Significance8047@reddit
I had never seen or heard of blue moon flavor until I moved to Chicago (lifelong east coaster).
MyUsername2459@reddit
I've seen it in Kentucky. A little Mom and Pop ice cream shop and hardware store had it.
MuppetManiac@reddit
I’ve had it in Texas. In specialty shops only, but still.
HackDaddy85@reddit
That’s pretty much everywhere. We have it in Ohio and when I lived in Florida it was there too.
Shurakai_@reddit
We have it in Florida.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
Read this thread there are SO MANY I’ve never heard of !!! Very fun to learn about and kinda interesting too when people include the history and a good description. :)
PickleMundane6514@reddit
Everytime we would cross into Ontario my grandfather would be on the hunt for tigertail icecream. It’s not that common even there. It’s vanilla, orange, and black licorice swirl.
asteriskelipses@reddit
SE USA. Not FL, ill say that. But fresh peaches are pretty easy to find when in season. And yes, there's something about the way they combine and create the sweetness with the fruitiness at the same time, it's just great. Texture though too. Thats key
Batgirl_III@reddit
Superman ice cream originated in Detroit, Michigan, at Stroh's Ice Cream in the 1920s. A combination of blue moon, cherry, and lemon ice cream it actually predates the Superman character by about a decade, but the blue-red-yellow colors quickly became associated with the hero when he came along and skyrocketed to popularity.
You can pretty much only find the flavor in the Great Lakes region.
(I love Superman ice cream, but I’d often insist on getting just a scoop of blue moon, which as a little little kid I always called “Batman” ice cream. Since it was all blue, just like the Batman’s Bronze Age costume.)
No-Effort5109@reddit
Used to get Superman in Florida in the 80s.
Batgirl_III@reddit
Florida is Michigan’s Lower-er Peninsula.
Impressive_Sun_1132@reddit
Don't you dare compare FL to those egomaniacs
Batgirl_III@reddit
It’s more a joke about how all of our parents and grandparents moved down there after they retired.
Not me though! The Coast Guard sent me to Pensacola fairly early in my career with CGIS. Two hurricane seasons was more than enough time in the Sunshine State for me. Now that I’m retired, I’m living in the PNW.
lonelybear_swims@reddit
It’s still around lol I’m from/still living in the Tampa Bay Area and this was my favorite flavor growing up (00’s)
Human-Ad8198@reddit
In south western Pennsylvania too. I think you still can, tho I haven't looked for it in years.
em21091@reddit
Aww my dad's from SW PA..ill probably never go back but there will always be smth special about smithfield..I guess.. but dont make me live there.
LowCress9866@reddit
Florida gets everything east of the Mississippi. You see these franchises that are in Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Maine, Florida, and Dubai
notyourcinderella@reddit
I haven't been able to find it in Central Florida now, unfortunately.
Boring_Investigator0@reddit
I've seen Superman ice cream in Melbourne.
notyourcinderella@reddit
I'm unfortunately just southwest of Orlando over by Disney World so that's a bit of a hike for me
Boring_Investigator0@reddit
What about I-Drive? At the Candy Cream Cafe they also have it. That's a bit of a hike for me so it didn't occur to me at first. There's also RedCone in Meadow Woods and Abracadabra in Kissimmee.
notyourcinderella@reddit
Thank you! You've just really made my day!!
jj_grace@reddit
Oh weird! I’m in Indiana (where it’s also at most ice cream shops) and had no clue it was a midwestern thing. Huh. Thank you, Michigan!
MeanderFlanders@reddit
What’s the flavor of blue moon?
Pretend_Ad_3125@reddit
It tastes like fruit + nutmeg to me
Batgirl_III@reddit
No two dairies make quite the same flavor, despite them all calling it blue moon. Most commonly being described as fruity, citrusy, or cotton candy like. Sometimes a hint of almond or vanilla. I’ve always compared it to Froot Loops cereal.
CreamyImp@reddit
I just tell people it tastes like blue. It’s been my favorite ice cream flavor since I was a kid, blue moon milkshakes are amazing.
Not_an_okama@reddit
When i got my wisdom teeth out i ate only blue moon ice cream and rice for about 2 weeks. My poo was blue for about 3 weeks.
javiergoddam@reddit
Don't forget Mackinac Island Fudge :]
Here in Chicago I only see it from a brand that proudly proclaims it's from Wisconsin lol
Batgirl_III@reddit
As a Yooper, I cannot and will not acknowledge troll kibble ice cream as a legitimate flavor. That stuff is for feeding tourists that live under the bridge.
javiergoddam@reddit
Dam lol the all the bug bites must have got u ornery
Batgirl_III@reddit
Like most places where tourism makes up a significant portion of the economy, the locals have a bit of a love-hate relationship with the entire edifice.
Most of the tourists are fine. But the obnoxious ones are really obnoxious and poison our opinions of the whole lot.
javiergoddam@reddit
Aight yea for the LP it's just an ice cream flavor we see at the Kilwins or whatever and it tastes good, never been to the island
Having called two "tourist" cities home the only vitriol we have is for the tourists themselves, not our hallmark attractions, like, do you hate lilacs too?
Batgirl_III@reddit
No, mostly just fudge.
Having split my childhood between da Yoop (dad’s family farm) and rural England (mum’s family farm on the Isle of Sheppey) and then spending most of my adult life in the Coast Guard moving from duty station to duty station all around the U.S., I’ve noticed that fudge and salt water taffy seem to be the Universal Tourist Trap food.
And for some reason, tourists everywhere seem to think the locals anywhere must really love the stuff.
I mean, I don’t actually hate the taste of it. I just have some sort of Pavlovian reaction to the… for lack of a better word… infrastructure of it.
Yeah, I probably need psychological assistance.
1Negative_Person@reddit
Blue Moon itself is from Michigan or Wisconsin. It’s a Midwestern original.
Batgirl_III@reddit
The original-original Superman ice cream from Stroh’s use Faygo Red Pop to make strawberry ice cream for the red section. Making it even more Michigander.
worrymon@reddit
I always wonder if the children in the state are Michigoslings.
Picklopolis@reddit
That would be Michugannah
realvctmsdntdrnkmlk@reddit
Omg!!! I didn’t know that about the Redpop. That sounds sublime. Boy do I miss Rock n’ Rye, and Redpop. I thought the blue was violette, tho. You could find it in Bad Axe. I also got the Blue Moon as a kid.
I was over the moon to find all of the best Michigan flavors, including Traverse City Cherry in Blowing Rock, NC. I’ll make the 2.5 hour drive once a year for a scoop.
Bokonon10@reddit
I'm a michigander living abroad and I barely even drink pop, but wow I would love some Redpop or Rock n' Rye right now.
realvctmsdntdrnkmlk@reddit
No way to get it, huh? We’re leaving this shithole. But I am going to miss some regional things like hell
puddyspud@reddit
Yo, how TF did I not know this despite living here for 35 years now
Batgirl_III@reddit
You didn’t spend your childhood memorizing obscure trivia about how ice cream parlors largely replaced bars and taverns during Prohibition?
Which is why, I shit you not, the U.S. Navy had three different “ice cream barges” in the Pacific during WWII: USS Hydrogen, Calcium, and Antimony.
Each stored 1,500 tons of frozen meat and 500 tons of refrigerated vegetables, eggs, and dairy products indefinitely. They could also produce ten gallons of fresh ice cream every seven minutes and store up to 2,000 gallons.
The Japanese were struggling to get their troops millet and potable water. Our boys were getting beef, bacon, eggs, and ice cream.
American logistics are insane.
puddyspud@reddit
Its a shame they arent getting fed properly now, I just commented on a post about someone on the USS Lincoln getting a sole of a shoe, steamed carrots, and a well well done burger patty
1Negative_Person@reddit
If you don’t want to eat shit, don’t enlist.
Batgirl_III@reddit
About a month ago, the media was apoplectic that our armed forces were getting fed steak and lobster.
USS Lincoln is on a long term deployment. Food in the Navy (or the Coast Guard) can get pretty bland when you’re underway for a prolonged period of time. This is nothing new.
puddyspud@reddit
The steak and lobsters, from everything Ive read wasnt really for the everyman armed force person and was more a Budget surplus they only spent so they didnt get less funding for the next quarter/year. Its kind of disgusting that we AT MINIMUM cannot feed people fighting for this Epstein cover-up, and you saying that meal was normal does not make it better or more acceptable.
Batgirl_III@reddit
I did not mean to give the impression it was normal, I was pointing out that a ship on prolonged seagoing assignment in an active combat zone is going to lack some of the amenities that would be available otherwise.
I’m going to assume you’ve never served?
vegweg25@reddit
For some reason it's a thing in Erie, PA too. It's a rotating flavor at pretty much every local ice cream stand and there's one that has it every day.
1Negative_Person@reddit
Erie is Midwestern in spirit.
Reasonable-Form-4320@reddit
Blue moon is the balls
TeacherPatti@reddit
Superman ice cream is my favorite ice cream. Blue Moon is also awesome. I had no idea about the red pop origins, but that makes sense as the red part tastes, well, red.
For those reading this who have not had this amazingness--please, please find a way to get some. It's a summertime ritual around here :)
zerodetroit@reddit
My fav ice cream flavor by far!
puddyspud@reddit
TIL Superman Ice Cream (all my friend's favorite flavors growing up whereas Id pick chocolate) is a local thing to me. I honestly never knew
ghdana@reddit
Perry's Ice Cream makes it and I see it all over New York State and I'd assume PA.
flyingterrordactyl@reddit
Some of the people saying they're getting Superman out of state -- are you sure it's actual Superman as described here, with blue moon, cherry, and lemon? I've seen it a few other places in the country where it's called Superman and it looks like Superman, but it's all just vanilla flavor. What a letdown!!!
Sweet_Race_6829@reddit
Kilwins has spread into the southeast (from Michigan) and they have it and blue moon. I’ve also seen a few other independent shops that sell superman in the southeast (I’ve been a fan of it for 40 years so always on the lookout), but the kilwins expansion has really increased its presence.
Virlutris@reddit
Thank you, this is awesome. It's really throrough and puts me in the moment with you.

Obvious-Ball-672@reddit
See if there’s a Kilwin’s near you - the franchise started in Michigan, and at least when I worked there they had blue moon ice cream
notyourcinderella@reddit
In the late 90s, I worked on Mackinac Island and there was a Kilwin's on the island at the time. I used to eat an ice cream cone from there while sitting in the steps of the Haunted Theatre.

Miserable_Insect_488@reddit
I’ve had it here in New England
Footnotegirl1@reddit
I can get superman here in Minnesota, but they don't have blue moon by itself, the one place that used to dependably carry it closed. *sadface*
trish3975@reddit
Holy shit I thought I made up this icecream in my head! My small town grocery store in Utah (of all places) had this when I was a small kid, scooped from big tubs at a counter. That store closed down and I never saw Superman icecream again.
Thanks for validating and unlocking memories :)

You’ve lived in Jersey too long if you can describe any flavor of water ice as “pretty good.” 😊
effie-sue@reddit
We have sweet corn ice cream in South Jersey.
I wouldn’t be surprised if Iowa and Illinois have it as well.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
Never heard of it in Iowa and I’m right in the middle of corn and sweet corn country!
Someone from Nebraska said they have it there and it is popular. Doesn’t sound great to me but I do like homemade creamed corn for sure, and corn pudding is great (like a soufflé made with eggs, or the easy version which is made with jiffy corn bread mix, fresh sweet corn, a creamed corn can, a cup of sour cream and butter baked in the oven) so it’s not far off that!
The cold part and the extra sugar needed to make it an ice cream worries me tho lol
bigedthebad@reddit
Blue Bell.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
I had Blue Bell when I lived in Louisiana and Blue Bunny when I lived in Iowa.
Blue Bell was better!

iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
Orange and chocolate in desserts has a long history! Jaffa Cakes in England, those chocolate bon bons filled with orange liqueur from Italy I think?
The ice cream version sounds wonderful!
ontothebullshit@reddit
We have sweet corn ice cream in Nebraska. I’m sure it’s not exclusive, and it’s very likely to be in places like Iowa too, but it’s probably not very common everywhere else
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
I’m in central Iowa and I’ve never seen it or even really heard of it?!? Maybe western iowa more your direction!
TokyoDrifblim@reddit
Not exclusive by any means but fresh peach ice cream mixed up at the farms and sold from farm stores a few hundred feet from where they were grown
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
I was just saying in another thread that my grandma used to serve us a little bowl of fresh perfectly ripened sweet peaches when we visited her on there farm, drenched in heavy cream and I don’t think you can beat that flavor combo for a simple PERFECT desert. Heavenly!! Miss my gran❤️🥹
I want to taste that again! Which farms/shops would you recommend for the ice cream version ?

Double Chocolate Malted Crunch. A regional flavor from Thrift Drugstores.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
YUM. I love the malt powder part in a chocolate malt and always add extra shakes!
At Culver’s they have delicious frozen custard and I ask for a chocolate malt made with vanilla custard, hot fudge and double the malt powder! It’s the best.
What’s in the double choc malted crunch??
asteriskelipses@reddit
Peach? At least fresh peach
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
My grandma used to give us fresh off her farm, super sweet and flavorful perfectly ripened peaches … sliced and in cute little bowls with heavy cream poured over for dessert when I was a kid … I’m convinced it was one of the greatest flavors I’ve ever experienced. Simple, fresh, perfect combination. Just right sweetness and the peach is the star. It would be much less without the addition of cream.
Peaches and cream … delicious. What state do you have fresh peach ice cream? Which shop do you recommend if I’m ever in your state?
(Is it Georgia ? Famous for peaches!)

I don't know, but I can't find any fucking bulk spumoni anywhere at a reasonable price.
BryonyVaughn@reddit
I haven’t found it anywhere since the 1970s in the Upper Midwest.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
The most heavenly spumoni I’ve ever had is from a classic shop, Angelo Brocatos, in New Orleans. Incredible. I don’t prefer the kind with the dried fruit/nuts etc stirred in so perhaps this creamy variety woofing be your Jam
Description from their website,

Truly special! It’s Available to order from Gold Belly but it is of course ridiculously expensive to ship :/. Ever in NOLA check it out tho!
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
I have a love of spumoni, and try it wherever I see it pop up anywhere in the country. The best, most heavenly spumoni I’ve ever had is from a long time shop, Angelo Brocatos, in New Orleans.
I am not being helpful for you because the one I’m suggesting is crazy expensive, but you can order Angelo’s on Gold Belly. For me it’s truly a “try before you die” kind of experience… but not sure what style of spumoni you like! I do NOT like the kind with chunks of stuff (dried fruits nuts choc chips etc) stirred in before the molding process as much as smooth varieties.
This is the flavor explanation and history of the shop from their website:

Green River float has to be pretty exclusive to the Chicagoland area. Never seen Green River soda anywhere else.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
Had to look it up, sounds great I like that flavor profile ! Lime and creamy vanilla combo—/ … kinda like key lime pie filling which is lime juice and sweetened condensed milk (lime and creamy vanilla!).
Trinx_@reddit
Had to scroll way too far to see this. There was one diner in South Bend, IN that had it when I was a kid.
1questions@reddit
Grew up in PNW and we had green river soda. I liked it and we made floats with it sometimes.
tsukiii@reddit
I had a Green River-themed hard seltzer in Hawaii, I think it’s popular there too.
tomhanksgiving@reddit
Not exclusive, but Superman ice cream is mostly a midwest thing.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
Must not be Iowa because I’ve never heard of it. Sounds interesting!
justbreathe5678@reddit
I have no idea what flavor it is but I see it all the time
tarheel_204@reddit
It’s popular in the South too. Used to be my favorite flavor as a kid
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
I remember getting this (or something called this) at King's Island in Cincinnati as a kid. It was blue, yellow, and red...vanilla ice cream.
itsatrapp71@reddit
Kings Island when I was a kid was really known for their Blueberry soft serve. That was the thing to get.
They called it Smurf ice cream because it was primarily sold in kiddie land outside the Smurfs ride.
PureMitten@reddit
The yellow is often vanilla flavored but the blue is supposed to be Blue Moon and the red is supposed to be another flavor. Overall it generally tastes like Froot Loops to me. Just dyeing vanilla and calling it superman ice cream sounds so disappointing
city_druid@reddit
I’ve seen Superman where the blue is “blue raspberry” instead.
Right_Two_5737@reddit
Blue Moon? Like the beer?
Which_Loss6887@reddit
Nope! [This stuff.] (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Blue_moon_(ice_cream)) It used to be my absolute favorite growing up in the 80s/early 90s, but these days it’s hard to find any that tastes like it used to.
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
It was. I was probably 7 or 8, the Superman movie was a thing, and we were at King's Island. I now know why my dad was so irritated.
kneemeister1@reddit
Kings Island and Blue Ice Cream, all those kids walking around Hanna Barbara land with blue tongues. That brings up memories of the Chicken Dance on the Racer with my 8 year old niece. She is now the mother in Tennessee with a daughter almost the same age. 😊
porquegato@reddit
The one everyone raves about up here is the tri flavor version. Yellow is usually vanilla, I think there are a couple brands that do lemon. Blue is supposed to be Blue Moon (but what is Blue Moon anyway? Marshmallow almond?) Red is cherry or strawberry (lotta Michiganders will argue that it's specifically Faygo Red Pop soooo... strawberry).
Plastic-Sentence9429@reddit
Yeah, this was 45+ years ago and tied to the Superman movie. Just a gimmick that pissed my dad off.
DarthJarJar242@reddit
It's just vanilla though lol
minnick27@reddit

missflavortown@reddit

Grouchy-Stand-4570@reddit
Had it on Long Island
ohshit-cookies@reddit
I have vague memories of this ice cream from visiting the Midwest when I was a kid and I saw it pop up in my local store but the worst brand! The type of ice cream that doesn't seem to fully melt and tastes almost... foamy? So I'm still left with a craving for Superman or blue moon ice cream!
CommandAlternative10@reddit
What flavor is it?
Significant-Track797@reddit
Sweet corn ice cream! It’s not “exclusive” to Nebraska (Ive seen it in other corn states) but I missed it lots when I moved to the east coast.
Shake_The_Stars@reddit
At least that sounds better than when a Lincoln ice cream shop partnered with Runza for chili and cinnamon roll ice cream.
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
That sounds like a TRAVESTY.
I did grow up with chili and cinnamon rolls on the side in the central Iowa in the 80s/90s, and still today it’s a staple of school lunches in this area and some lunch spots.
But making it an ice cream flavor together is horrendous :(. We did NOT dip the cinnamon rolls in the chilli btw, that’s some weird thing people today came up with. We just took a bit of one and then the other alternating! Not dipping.
How did you eat it where you’re from?
hellowithmyheart@reddit
I’ve had some in L.A., in a few places, and I loved it! SomiSomi (a Japanese soft serve chain, with some US locations) has it seasonally too!

Which_Loss6887@reddit
Blue Moon. (The original blue moon with the unidentifiable flavor, not the blue cotton candy flavor that often gets passed off for it now.) Not exclusive to where I live now, but to where I grew up in the upper midwest
Reasonable-Form-4320@reddit
It's almond flavored
iangeredcharlesvane2@reddit
The comment below said it tastes like fruity pebbles, and you said that ice cream is almond flavored lmao. That’s wildly different flavor descriptions!
I remember my parents making “pink squirrels” back in the 80s which was crème de almond, crème de white cacao, and vanilla ice cream mixed in a blender. I used to sneak spoonfuls (they are a boozy treat!) and the combo of vanilla ice cream with the almond flavoring was DELICIOUS.
So I am intrigued by this ice cream you speak of and will try it if it is almond flavored!!! If it’s fruity pebbles tho that’s a different ball game (don’t dislike them but wouldn’t seek out ice cream that flavor!).
Reasonable-Form-4320@reddit
Definitely try it. I loved Blue Moon for years without knowing its flavor, but it's almond. The color really throws you off.
ChemicallyAlteredVet@reddit
It’s from Michigan. My wife grew up here in the UP. I don’t like it but to here it tastes like almonds I guess.?
Weekly_Guidance_498@reddit
I always thought it tasted like Fruity Pebbles
Which_Loss6887@reddit
Some people say it tastes that way now, but it didn’t back then, at least not directly. I’ve always hated fruity pebbles with a passion, even as a kid, but I loved blue moon. Popular lore is that the old flavor was mostly castoreum. There is so much disagreement about what the flavor is/was that I suspect it was one of those things that doesn’t activate everyone’s taste buds the same way, kind of like hops or cilantro. The original blue moon flavoring was made by only one company, who supplied it to various Midwestern ice cream makers. Now multiple companies make their own version of the flavor, all of which are a little different. (And all of which are trying too hard, to my palate. It used to be such a mellow, subtle flavor.)
Anathemautomaton@reddit
Like from beavers?
I know it's used for perfumes, but it seems wild to use it in ice cream.
Which_Loss6887@reddit
Yes, from beavers. It used to be a pretty common “natural flavoring.” I’m not sure if it is anymore (I’d suspect not). I’ve usually seen it described as like vanilla-ish with a bit of strawberry, which sounds reasonably accurate.
Icey-Emotion@reddit
Blue Moon is also super popular where I live now. I had never heard of it prior. It's like a small, tiny pocket in the state I am in.

Tawny_Frogmouth@reddit
It got a lot of coverage in MO because there was a big uproar when the state health department stepped in to stop a place in Columbia from serving it (i was living nearby at the time). Other places that serve it probably try to keep quiet about it because of that!

MathBookModel@reddit
TIL! I really would have thought coffee ice cream was unique to us
Rosamada@reddit
Why would you ever have thought that lol, isn't coffee pretty universal?
alxfx@reddit
Coffee milk is a strictly-New England thing, so I suppose it isn't a huge leap from there to assuming that the frozen version might also be just a local thing.
But transversely, it always strikes me as odd that people all over the country love coffee ice cream, but balk at the idea of us over here drinking basically just the melted version of it. Lol
Rosamada@reddit
(copy-pasting my response to the other person who brought up coffee milk)
That is actually a good explanation!
I still don't think it's surprising, but I understand why someone from a "coffee milk" area might. I've never had coffee milk, but there are a lot of coffee drinks that seem really similar flavor-wise, so the flavor profile really doesn't feel specific to New England. The part that feels specific to New England is using coffee-flavored syrup instead of coffee.
MathBookModel@reddit
Because as someone else already replied, people are baffled by the idea of “coffee milk” even though nobody bats an eye at the ice cream flavor (or yogurt for that matter)
Rosamada@reddit

My local soft serve place does it with local maple syrup. Also if you want hard serve, the Canadian side of Niagara falls has it.

Curious, if you’re willing to dish:
What's teaberry like in ice cream?
How's it different from mint peppermint or spearmint or whatever flavor-wise?
oolongvanilla@reddit
It's much more smooth and mellow. Not sharp or overpowering like other mints can be. Teaberry is the same thing as wintergreen, and that's a key flavoring in a lot of rootbeers, so it's sort of like a mellow rootbeer flavor.
shelwood46@reddit
More like a birch beer, which I find much more noticeably minty than root beer.
TooManyDraculas@reddit
Birch is a major source of oil of wintergreen. It's the main flavor compound in birch beer.
But the thing is winter green from things like teaberry and birch. Is a lot softer, sweeter and fruitier than the straight wintergreen flavoring of a mint or chewing gum. Largely owing to all the other stuff in them.
I'm personally not fond of mint. I'm all over birch beer and teaberry.
Which by the way is just local name for the American Wintergreen.
Virlutris@reddit
Okay, where can I find a birch beer?
Because i didn't know I needed this in my life.
oolongvanilla@reddit
Good call. A birch beer float with teaberry ice cream would be amazing and very Pennsylvania.

riversroadsbridges@reddit
Think of the flavor of Peptobismol. There's a cooling minty element, but you probably wouldn't say that Peptobismol is mint-flavored. Teaberry is very, very similar to the flavor of Peptobismol.

Good comp there, gets me un the right neighborhood :)
oolongvanilla@reddit
Have you ever had those round, pink wintergreen candies with "Canada" printed on them that often come in peg bags at drugstores? Like these? That's exactly what teaberry tastes like. In ice cream form, the cold, smooth minty flavor is very refreshing.
Virlutris@reddit
That's a really good description. I can almost taste it.
I think i can see why someone else might think it was medicine-y.
oolongvanilla@reddit
I hate the Pepto-Bismal description, not because it's completely inaccurate, but because it makes it sound unappealing. They're both pink and wintergreen, but teaberry ice cream is still sweet, not bitter like Pepto. Teaberry's not chalky, either.
LABELyourPHOTOS@reddit
Teaberries are so much milder. I hate to say it but more like pepto bismol.
stolenwallethrowaway@reddit
It tastes like medicine! It’s polarizing and mostly old people ordered it when I scooped ice cream as a teen. I developed a taste for it but most stores don’t sell it.
AluminumCansAndYarn@reddit
Mint ice cream in general is polarizing. I love mint chocolate chip ice cream but a lot of people hate anything that tastes of mint aside from toothpaste and gum and then I wonder how thin mint cookies are apparently the best selling girl scout cookies.
grumpyhost@reddit
I think teaberry is to strawberry as wintergreen is to mint or cloves are to cinnamon. Sort of a weird smack-your-lips kind of astringent flavor.
anosmia1974@reddit
Polarizing is right! People really seem to love or hate it—no in-between. I have never tried it. I wouldn’t mind trying it sometime during a visit back to PA, but since I have a wonky sense of taste (due to being born without a sense of smell), I fear I would find it really unappealing!
Everything_Breaks@reddit
It tastes like Pepto-Bismol original flavor
preygoneesh@reddit
I’m glad I’m not the only one who thinks so! I’m from the west coast, went to PA to visit a friend and on a zoom meeting some East coast coworkers were asking if I went to the Penn state ice cream shop. I said I had a bit of tea berry but it reminded me of Mylanta or Pepto Bismol and even though I do kinda like that flavor it seemed too much for a whole scoop.
I could see two coworkers in hysterics (on mute) in their zoom windows and I was like am I crazy for comparing it to that? It totally does!

puddyspud@reddit

I had some at a local restaurant not too far off of the C&O tow path on the western end. I wish I could remember the name of the town. It's very seasonal.
Virlutris@reddit
I know folks who talk about harvesting paw paw a little further east, so i was wondering if there was a place in MD that did it.

For a long time the town of Gilroy, CA held an annual garlic festival that included garlic ice cream.
And New England has grape nuts ice cream.
I'm sure neither of those flavors is truly exclusive but I've never seen either of them outside of those regions.
Elenakalis@reddit
I went to a NPS park called Hampton House in Maryland years ago, and did the guided tour. I can't remember if it was 1700s or 1800s, but it was trendy to serve your guests ice cream flavors like garlic, onion, cabbage, and clover.
I guess the Old Bay flavored ice cream is an improvement.
cheyannepavan@reddit
We have an annual garlic festival with garlic ice cream in Easton, PA.
AuroraLorraine522@reddit
My hometown has a leek festival that definitely has leek desserts. Im pretty sure I’ve seen leek ice cream
AgathaM@reddit
I have driven through Gilroy but was never tempted to try the ice cream.
How about Rite Aid chocolate malted crunch ice cream? That’s pretty regional and tasty.
ccagan@reddit
My first drive through Gilroy was the day the shelter in place order was issued to the Bay Area. March, 2020 and the further south I drove from the airport in San Jose the longer the lines got at every drive through.
When I got to Gilroy, things looked normal but the smell was like NOTHING else. Garlic and cherry blossoms. I’ll never forget it.
Negative-Arachnid-65@reddit
IMO the garlic ice cream is worth it for the novelty but one try is enough.
Thrifty brand! Man I haven't had that in a while.
mirth4@reddit
One bite was enough novelty for me
tn00bz@reddit
Yep, ive had garlic ice cream in gilroy. It's not bad. I'd never get it if I had any other options, but it's not bad.

Elenakalis@reddit
My husband loves the Dr. Pepper shakes at Whattaburger. Every time we're down south, we have to check to see if it's back.
I'm ftom Louisiana, so I guess our ice cream flavor would be Blue Bell's king cake. I live in Pennsylvania now, and Turkey Hill ice cream doesn't even come close to Blue Bell.

Tillamook huckleberry ice cream is nothing compared to fresh locally made huckleberry anything though. And it’s pretty stingy with the berries.
_luckybell_@reddit
Plus, I believe that true huckleberries can only grow in very specific places. So a lot of huckleberry flavored things will use blueberries mainly to save $.

When I was a kid in Wisconsin, one of the local dairies had "Dutch Chocolate" ice cream that was a very mild milk chocolate flavor, like when you get a black & white shake but premixed. Best thing ever. They also sold 5 gallon buckets of premixed Tom & Jerry mix at the holidays, which is kind of like eggnog but mostly made with egg whites and whipped up and frozen, you poured hot water over it then added liquor (usually rum and/or brandy).

Not sure about actual flavors, but California is generally the only place you can get an It’s-It. An ice cream sandwich, but instead of chocolate chip cookies or graham crackers like most of them, they use oatmeal cookies and are dipped in a very, very thin layer of dark chocolate.

Garlic ice cream! Gilroy, California is located about 30 miles south of San Jose and is famous for garlic farming. Maybe 2 answers? Panda Paws by Perry’s Ice Cream in WNY. I’m in Chicago now, but I honestly think it may be the same type of ice cream as Moosetracks, but my dad who buys ice cream like it’s his job shocked me when he had never heard of Moosetracks ice cream. I thought I was in the twilight zone? Thought everyone knew Moosetracks, is it a Midwest thing? Not sure. But Panda Paws is definitely only a Perry’s ice cream thing and Perry’s doesn’t seem to want to expand past WNY sadly! I miss Perry’s Ice Cream so much. wmass@reddit
It’s not bad. I’ve only had it at an annual asparagus festival in Hadley, MA. It tastes like an herbal vanilla.
Current-Photo2857@reddit
Same here (curious) actually, I still haven’t tried it…I always miss my window, it’s only available for a few weeks in the spring when the asparagus comes out. According to our local news, it’s “a mellow, nutty savory-sweet flavor at first, with the glow of the almonds and cream coming through.
It’s not until a moment later that the brighter notes of the asparagus, which lean in a savory direction.
It’s a functional sweetness, similar to using green tea in desserts. It’s less sweet than other flavors. But that’s part of the reason why it works.
The asparagus doesn’t add much of a vegetal taste, it leans more savory and earthy in a way that complements the mellow sweetness of the other elements”
