Since your Thanksgiving is in November do you keep fall decorations out until after Thanksgiving and then decorate for Christmas, or do Thanksgiving and Christmas decorations overlap?

Pretty much the whole black Friday shopping thing is the start of Christmas shopping season and people put their stuff out over those couple weekends.
Alarmed_Drop7162@reddit
Both mostly. I have family that celebrates the decorations changing over the day after the holidays.
reblynn2012@reddit
I decorate for fall a bit. Once thanksgiving is over Christmas is on. But when I son was little we did have occasionally the tree up w lights.
Everyone does their own thing. No one finds any of it strange.
wellintentioned2025@reddit
The day after Thanksgiving is the unofficial start of the Christmas season, and most people begin decorating that weekend or in the beginning of December. Some people wait until the day before Christmas to decorate or don't decorate at all. Some people keep a fake tree up year round.
Bluemonogi@reddit
I don’t put out Thanksgiving decorations. That is not common in my area. There are Halloween decorations but those are generally removed before Thanksgiving. I suppose some people might have generic fall pumpkins or something out.
Many people in my area put up outdoor Christmas decorations in the days immediately following Thanksgiving. I refuse to decorate for Christmas before December 1st.
Impulse2915@reddit
We have fall decorations starting September, in October we add in halloween decorations, then November until Thanksgiving we swap the halloween decorations for the more fall stuff again, but Black Friday we're putting up Christmas.
mickeltee@reddit
We do fall decorations (not necessarily holiday specific) from October to the weekend after thanksgiving, and then I put up Christmas lights thanksgiving weekend which stay up until the weekend after new years(ideally, sometimes the weather doesn’t cooperate with this.
goblin_hipster@reddit
Christmas creep! Seems to happen earlier and earlier every year. A lot of shops start putting out Christmas stuff after Halloween.
moosieq@reddit
In my household the Christmas tree goes up immediately after Thanksgiving and all the fall stuff slowly transitions into Christmas decor until February when the Valentine's Day stuff comes out.
Freyjas_child@reddit
Fall decorations come out in September after Labor Day. These are supplemented with Halloween decorations in October and then Thanksgiving decorations in November. After Thanksgiving that all gets put away and Christmas decorations come out. So no overlap.
Castronautik@reddit
Harvest (non spooky fall decorations) usually stay up until the end of November when most Christmas stuff starts to come up. Harvest season is what a lot of people think of when it comes to Fall decoration (pumpkins, gourds, cornucopias, etc.)
sneezhousing@reddit
Yes
Ok-Flight-1504@reddit
In recent years I've noticed most people don't decorate for Thanksgiving anymore. It goes right from Halloween to Christmas on November 1.
DogsBikesAndMovies@reddit
I've never known a family to decorate for Thanksgiving. Thanksgiving decorations are typically in retail stores only. Christmas decorations typically come out in our homes sometime in early December.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
My mom and grandmas all do
jamiesugah@reddit
We used to when I was a kid. Thanksgiving is my mom's favorite holiday and she really liked to decorate for it.
Coldfyre_Dusty@reddit
I think part of it depends on where you are too. Where I'm at tends to have Thanksgiving decorations, but I used to live in Minnesota, where it tended to go straight from Halloween to Christmas. Weather tends to be a big part of that though, nobody knows whether November will be 30s and 40s, or if it'll snow two feet before Thanksgiving. Best to just put it up when its still warm then leave it up till February or March and take it down on the first mild day of the year.
shelwood46@reddit
Yes, exactly. I grew up in Wisconsin. You put up the outdoor decorations early, before the snow, but ideally wait until after Thanksgiving to turn the lights on. We'd also wait until after Thanksgiving to do the indoor Christmas decorations, though I know many people who get them up a hair earlier.
that-Sarah-girl@reddit
You're underestimating festive gourd session. I definitely start hoarding gourds and mini-pumpkins before Halloween and keep them out through Thanksgiving weekend as long as they're not rotten. Christmas can wait.
IceManYurt@reddit
I feel like this is an economic indicator no one talks about.
During good times people are able to justify the cost of buying decorations... Once it gets tight, things like this get cut
Weightmonster@reddit
same.
Traditional_Trust418@reddit
I don't really care for Thanksgiving or Halloween so I just decorate for Christmas in September
Adorable_Dust3799@reddit
We always had fall and winter stuff that stayed out for months, and brought out specific items for Thanksgiving, Christmas and new years.
Madreese@reddit
I think Halloween and Thanksgiving overlap. Fall with spooky overtones. Christmas decorations often come out the weekend after Thanksgiving and for some people the week before Thanksgiving.
Vachic09@reddit
Fall decor is from Labor Day to Thanksgiving.
Rogue_Apostle@reddit
Most stores put out Christmas stuff right after Halloween, so it overlaps with Thanksgiving and fall in general.
At my house, there is no overlap. Fall stuff comes down and Christmas stuff goes up the day after Thanksgiving.
Dapper-Presence4975@reddit
Since the pandemic, I’ve been seeing Christmas stuff emerging as early as September…
shelwood46@reddit
Oh it has always come out early in stores. My local grocery store cleared away their Easter candy and put out... Fourth of July candy. I'd never seen that before (it was all red, white and blue wrapped regular candy, like Kisses. The Fourth doesn't have it's own specialty candy yet. Though you'd think Pop Rocks would be a natural.)
LankyJeep@reddit
Black Friday is the start of Christmas season for my family too, I hate this Christmas in November stuff
LankyJeep@reddit
My personal opinion is that Black Friday starts the Christmas season, Thanksgiving is the last day of the fall season and I hate that it feels like Christmas has overshadowed not only Thanksgiving but the entire fall season, it’s even starting encroaching on Halloween and that just feels wrong
TechnologyDragon6973@reddit
My fall decorations are basically all Halloween decorations, and those stay up until roughly Advent when the Christmas decorations come out. But if Advent starts in late November I refuse to change anything until December 1 on principle.
MissingGrayMatter@reddit
My sister decorates with The Nightmare Before Christmas stuff and just leaves it all up Halloween to Christmas.
foozballhead@reddit
I don't decorate for transiting at all, but if i had any regular uncarved pumpkins left from Halloween i might leave them out through thanksgiving.
WthAmIEvenDoing@reddit
I do autumn decorations from October to the day after Thanksgiving, and that following weekend I put my Christmas stuff out.
GrowlingAtTheWorld@reddit
Halloween and Thanksgiving overlap decor wise cause pumpkins do both holiday. You tuck the ghosts and goblins away and leave the pumpkin and hay bails and add a few Turkeys
FivebyFive@reddit
I decorate for fall, not specific to thanksgiving really. And yep, I leave the decorations up until I put my Christmas stuff out.
Altruistic-Dig-2507@reddit
Thanksgiving decor is whatever your kid made at school.
MM_in_MN@reddit
My holiday decor consists of a fake flower wreath on the door, and a few bits and bobs ceramic candle holders on the table. At most, 4-5 things.
I put out the apples, pumpkins and autumn leaves sometime in September/ October. And switch them out for cardinals and snowy pine trees sometime in December. It’s autumn and it’s winter. It’s not specific to any holiday so it stays out longer.
OptatusCleary@reddit
What I do, and what I see a lot of people (but not everyone) do is have autumn decorations up until after Thanksgiving/ the start of December. I don’t decorate for Halloween in a “Halloween-specific” way. I decorate with pumpkins, leave decor, and that kind of thing. It works until Christmas time.
oswin13@reddit
People around here keep their 12 ft skeletons up and qdd Christmas lights
TheBimpo@reddit
Christmas tree goes up the day after Thanksgiving, always has. No overlap.
FataMorganaForReal@reddit
Mine don't overlap. I have to move my fall decorations to make room for my "extra" Christmas decorations. 🎄😍
Ok_Orchid1004@reddit
We decorate for Christmas every year at thanksgiving time. No thanksgiving-specific decorating.
FreeStateOfPortland@reddit
We usually decorate in the autumn for Halloween and leave out the autumn specific decorations like some go the pumpkins and gourds and then the weekend after Thanksgiving put up the Christmas decorations.
Constellation-88@reddit
I personally decorate for Christmas the Saturday after Thanksgiving.
donuttrackme@reddit
I don't decorate for any of them lol. I celebrate both secularly though.
PlanMagnet38@reddit
I put out my Fall decorations on the Autumnal Equinox and then put out my winter decorations the day after Thanksgiving.
Naive-Direction1351@reddit
Decorate for fall staring in sept than put some halloween stuff out and than out a couple thanksgiving stuff out. The day after thanksgiving christmas goes up and
HorseFeathersFur@reddit
Some of us decorate for autumn on Halloween and then keep those decorations up thru thanksgiving
minnick27@reddit
Thanksgiving stuff comes down and Christmas stuff goes up on Black Friday. My mom used to start decorating for Christmas after Santa runs up the stairs of the Philly Art Museum.
Deolater@reddit
My family has always started Christmas decorations the weekend after Thanksgiving
That's still too much Christmas for me, but such is life.
MileHighMischief720@reddit
Same, same.
Anachronism--@reddit
Fall /thanksgiving/ Halloween decorations stay up until day after thanksgiving. Then Christmas decorations go up, this should be law…
devilscabinet@reddit
My family only decorates for Halloween and Christmas. Thanksgiving is just "eat a big dinner with family day" for us. Those are the only holidays we celebrate.
AbiWil1996@reddit
I keep Fall decorations up til the beginning of November but then I move to Christmas decor. May throw in some fake fall colored flowers on Thanksgiving but it’s still a Christmas wonderland over here.
Quirky-Lecture-6066@reddit
We keep 'fall' themed decor until December 1st, then swap out for Christmas theme.
ladyzfactor@reddit
Thanksgiving decorations aren't particularly common. At most they are table decorations only used for the day or at most left out for a week. General rule was you had to wait until after Thanksgiving to decorate for Christmas.
muchquery@reddit
Not me. Xmas decorating doesn't start until Dec. 1. Any fall decorations go away after the holiday, though Halloween might linger a bit. As an aside, Xmas decorations go away by the first week of January.
Vanilla_thundr@reddit
Both. Thanksgiving is a very fall-coded holiday but the Christmas creep has been slowly consuming November, too.
Prestigious-Name-323@reddit
I like fall so I generally keep fall stuff out until Thanksgiving. But Halloween is my favorite so I wear/decorate with Halloween stuff year round.
ResponsibleFly9076@reddit
I decorate for fall and leave that out until after Thanksgiving. I don’t decorate for Christmas until December.
