How do you feel about your late 20's son/daughter still living at home?

shortandfelly@reddit

I have "home" (my house), "home home" (my parents' house, which is where I grew up) and then my "home from home(home)" which is my dad's best friend's cottage which was her husband's art studio before he suddenly passed away. She's 40 miles away, my parents are 200, so I go and stay with her quite a lot and help her with jobs. I'm 38 😂 I also still haven't figured out how to answer "where are you from?" because I'm from Somerset...but if you mean "where do you live?" I've been in Sheffield nearly 15 years.

38. Talk to a friend I made in sixth form every day and in regularly contact with another I've had since I was 15ish, other friends I had I talk to very occasionally/we comment on the odd stuff on Facebook. I lost touch with a big group of them thanks to my dickhead ex when I first went to university. I didn't have a huge group of friends from my undergrad and I'm in sporadic contact with them now. I was in regular contact with one (meet up once a year or so) and still heard from her regularly (couple of times a month) after she had kid number 1 but I go months without hearing from her now she's had no 2. I also lost some friends I made during my PhD due to a breakup. This sounds very sad 😂 I do have a very solid friendship group but all within the last 10ish years.

He only cares about people when they're outside. Once they're inside, they're friends 😂 I also think he was pretty fast asleep. I was awake and didn't hear the door, if she'd not knocked the door on the stairs, I would have just thought I'd imagined the light and it was definitely time to go to sleep!

In a nutshell, yeah. I live on my own and struggle to finish a bottle before it goes off, so I didn't mind her having it, I was just concerned about her state of mind. She was so embarrassed that I couldn't do anything but find it funny anyway. She wasn't in a good place at the time, but she's doing much better now.

My dog (who likes to bark at the smallest of things, except he's going a bit deaf now 😂) didn't bat an eyelid when my neighbour let herself in at midnight to take a half finished bottle of wine she'd clocked when she came round to fix my hoover for me earlier in the evening 😂 I thought I saw a flash of light where no outside light can reach so thought I'd imagined it...and then the door at the bottom of the stairs creaked. I nearly shat myself. Looked at my phone after a handful of minutes to find a message from her saying she was coming round the the wine. She was super embarrassed but I found it pretty funny. Once I knew I wasn't about to be murdered, at least...

Why do a lot of married people not sustain their friendships?

Posted by SnooozeFezt@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 69 comments

shortandfelly@reddit

Nah. They're my friends. They know I'd find an excuse to gently let them down if I didn't want to go. Tell that to my friend then who went down the slide, and who has obviously gone down a slide many times, with her own daughter. Also tell that to all the thousands if not millions of parents who have gone down slides with their kids with zero issue. I can't say I've ever heard warnings to parents not to go down slides with their kids... 🤷‍♀️

shortandfelly@reddit

Yeah, but my friends know I'm happy to do kid-friendly stuff. Do I want to do it every week? Hell no, but it'd never be a weekly thing. Can I handle a trip to the park once or twice a year if I get to see my friends? Yeah. I also like my friends' kids. It's not that hard to understand 😂 Regarding the slide, my friend asked me if I'd mind going up with the toddler as it's quite a big climbing frame and not really suitable at her age unsupervised. Toddler got to the slide, paused, I asked her if she wanted to go down together and she nodded, otherwise I was just going to follow down after her. My friend also went down with her. It wasn't to do with teaching her kid independence. Fair play if you let yours go on their own, but that is completely irrelevant to the occasion I was describing.

I've seen it with friends who have had kids. I'm happy to meet up and do kid-friendly things (I neither have nor want kids) but they seem to just want to see their friends who also have kids. I'm not expecting them to drop everything and go for a weekend away, I'm more than happy to do a trip to the park or something. It's not the kid-free people choosing not to meet up, it's the ones with kids. I have a friend who has two kids under 5. It really does feel like nothing has changed when we meet up. 18 months ago, we went to see the Very Hungry Caterpillar in the theatre (my idea 😂), went to the park in town and I went down the big slide with her toddler and then we went for pizza. Genuinely lovely day out!

Sample bias. You're reading about people who are pissed off because people who had a lovely time aren't going to make a post about it. E.g. I've been a bridesmaid twice. The second time was one of the best days of my life. The first time? We're no longer friends. Guess which one I will spend more talking about if asked? 😂

When is the last time you had a big cry?

Really huge cry? A couple of years ago when one of our family dogs died (I was 36 and live 4 hours away, have a dog of my own who is related to the long line of family dogs we've had). She was my dad's favourite out of all of the 40+ years of the k9 family line, and the last puppy from his best friend who took his own life in 2020. I had covid at the time so I couldn't even get my friend who lives next door to give me a hug. I ugly cried. My parents buried her next to all our other dogs and put a beach towel and her pink pig in with her. Makes me cry every time I think about it. My dad still takes her ball to the beach. He's a vet and he had to ask a friend to put her to sleep as he was just too upset. Small cries? Quite often. My dog has just turned 12 and whilst he's super healthy and active still. I can't finish this sentence.

Dog owners of the UK. How hot does it have to get before you stop taking them for a walk?

There's no set answer. I can get my dog to water pretty quickly and walk him along the river so he's pretty easy to keep cool as he loves water. Bar the middle of the day, one side of my road or the other is in shade which gets of us most of the way to the edge of the wood. If it's roasting, I tip water over him before we leave.

My first boyfriend was pretty jealous. Alas it took me at least 3 years too long of the 4 year relationship to dump his sorry arse, but at least we did. We had each other's Facebook passwords. He was my first boyfriend, I was 18, he was 21, so I didn't know that was weird (side note: he changed his passwords but still had mine, who was cheating?). Next boyfriend a year and a bit after we split ( I was 23). Nearly asked him if we were going to swap passwords...and then I had an epiphany and realised how fucking weird that was.

The next two sets of houses to one side, plus the guy two doors down from there, the couple next to me on the other side, the lady across the road, and I don't know the name of but have chatted to another guy across the road. Half of these are because I went knocking on doors when my cat went missing. I also know random people in the neighbourhood through walking my dog. I must have chatted to one guy for dozens of hours over the last 3+ years (I've been in this house a smidgeon over 5.5 years but I can't remember when I first bumped into him). Finally asked him his name a couple of months ago as I only know his dog's name 😂

A former friend. She wanted my help buying plants for her garden so we went to B&Q. I didn't have a job at the time, so I left my money at home so I couldn't be tempted to buy anything. Obviously did, about £3's worth. We got back and I emptied out my wallet to pay her. She said "it was about another 50p". She is a doctor, partner is an engineer. Was a bridesmaid for the same friend. Her hairdresser decided that one of the bridesmaids needed to have a hair trial. Friend expected me to pay. To be clear: would happily have paid to have my hair done on the day if she'd been up front about it. I offered to go halves (a tenner). She said there wasn't room in their budget. They were saving the same amount for their wedding a month that I was earning. I did most of the hen do planning, found the place to stay, sorted all the food. The maid of honour got a present on their wedding day (she was only MoH because she was the only single one of the three of us), other bridesmaid got a present because it was her birthday. I got nothing. Combined with some other shit, she became the only friend I've ever actually ended a friendship with. Other friends said they'd all gone out for a meal on a holiday in France, a table of 8 or so. These two refused to chip in for the tip which was a couple of euros each. Tight as arseholes, the pair of them.

Nope. I wear comfy clothes at work anyway and usually ride in. I get home, walk the dog, on Tuesday I have a music lesson so don't get home until gone 8pm. In summer, I do a lot of evening fell races or I'll go out for a run. I don't tend to put PJs on until just before bed. I might put my pj bottoms on at about 9pm if I'm in but that's it. E.g. I've been to an evening fell race tonight, I'm about to take the dog out for a quick walk, then I'll have a shower and get into my PJs, but it'll also be near 10pm by then anyway...

I was walking my dog behind a secondary school lad going to meet his mates who were walking towards us. He was commentating some moves from a game they were playing, supplemented by a lot of swearing... His mates gave that nod that means "there's someone behind you". He turned around and apologised pretty profusely 🤣 it gave me a good chuckle.

My primary school in a small village in Somerset had one Black kid, he joined partway through. 1 in 150 kids. My secondary school (1500) probably had fewer than 10 kids who weren't white, and I can only remember two (siblings) who were Black. I don't remember anyone caring at all, but I think we did wonder if they felt like they stood out.

The guy in front of me in the queue at Morrisons once challenged that he'd been given the wrong change. Till worked tried to shut him down but he stood his ground and eventually someone came over to check the till. He said he'd paid with a 20 but been given change for a tenner. Sure enough, the till was over by a tenner. He was a bit scruffy and didn't look like life was the kindest to him, which is obviously why they thought he was lying.

Mid 30s, never wanted kids, can't understand why anyone does 😂 I have two honorary nephews who I love to pieces and various friends have kids now, but it's a lifestyle that 100% is not what I want whatsoever. I'm happy with the dog and cat. You do a shit job of being a parent, you fuck them up and other people have to pick up the cost. You do a good job and all goes to plan, your kids have to go through losing you (still have both parents and long may that continue). Some people never get over losing their parent/s. Seems utterly selfish to me 😂

I'm also a runner, so I'd absolutely also be a runner for one but there aren't any less than an hour's drive from me. My dog might not forgive me though if I came home smelling of a pack of hounds 😂 Decent rule of thumb: use foxhounds? They're probably up to dodgy stuff. Use bloodhounds? All above board.
