I really like it too. It's nice to see and hear from other people that grew up similarly. BUT it can also be a painful reminder of a really shitty time in my life. I tend to tune out the first 13 years of my life. I had an abusive drunk for a dad and my childhood was very lonely.

Oh no! It just dawned on me that I talk on Speakerphone all the time!

At home, I only use speakerphone. My hearing in my right ear is shot and it helps me to listen with both ears. In public, I never use speakerphone. People that do are fkn weird. I always use the speakerphone on my office line too.

Yep. My 23 year old son lives with me and works full time. He pays me $400/month. I don't need the money, but I am trying to teach him about responsibility and that life does have expenses.

I was given 3 boxes of old photos. I didn't have the heart to tell my mom I didn't want them. I have my own collection of weird shit. My old puppy's collar with a little cow bell. My dreadlocks. My grandmother's cast iron frying pans. A rocking chair that was given to my mom when i was born. The plate and screws from when I pulverized my collarbone. I know my kids don't give a crap about any of it, but these things are meaningful to me.

Back on the CPAP

I've been using a CPAP for about 15 years or so. It's been a life changer. The mask I use covers my mouth and nose. I've tried different masks over the years, but I toss and turn a lot in my sleep and the nasal pillow ones just fall off or I get a crappy seal. I did twist up the pressure on mine to where it's most beneficial. The CPAP is the biggest thing that has improved my sleep. The second biggest was getting rid of my wife (now ex).

What age did y'all get your first computer (or device with internet access)?

We had a VIC-20 hooked up to a TV in like 80. I was 7. Then a Commodore 64. Used cassette tapes for storage. Then 5-1/4" floppies. First computer with the ability to contact other computers was a Mac II si with a 9600 baud modem in 92 at Drexel. Just AOL, Prodigy, and BBS's then.

Did your parents regularly attend your sporting events?

I rode my bike or walked to games/practice. I played baseball for years. I think my mom came to one game. My dad never. Sometimes, I wonder if most of the adults in my life had just completely checked out or if it was just the 70's and 80's

Got divorced about 8 years ago. It was the single best thing that I ever did for my mental health. I spent 17 years with the wrong woman. I had this crazy mentality that I was going to stay married longer than my parents were. It was really hard in the beginning. Going through custody battles with my ex was rough, but I can honestly say that the biggest thing I lost was my dog. My kids were in their early teens when I left and my relationship with both is positive. My oldest (23M) lives with me and my youngest (20M) is in college and lives with his mother when not at school. Today, I am happier than I've been since, well, before I got married. I learned a lot about myself during the process. One of those things is that I am much happier doing the solo thing. Not dating. Not interested. I'll never do the serious relationship thing again and I will not be cohabitating with anyone. I enjoy my freedom way too much.

Do you have your college diploma hung in your home?

It's in my garage. It's been mistreated and it has a big slice in the middle of it. I went to school for an education, not a piece of paper (vellum). I wouldn't have even gone to graduation if my wife didn't make me.

Do you have any debt?

Birthday Plans for a Gen-X'r In His 50s Living Alone?

I usually go on a trip or something. Travelling alone is awesome! You go where you want to go when you want to go there, eat what you want, whatever.

So my mom didn't believe my cousin she got locked out in the 80's.

At home, we would climb up and through a window on the first floor. At my grandparents', we climbed up a tree on to the porch room and into a 2nd story window.

Thoughts on AI for work?

mudshark698@reddit

I'm in HR and accounting. I absolutely refuse to use AI for anything. The guys I work with use it for simple stuff like writing emails. IMO...that's just pure laziness. ETA: AI really is coming for some of your jobs. Entry level positions in a lot of fields are going to be non-existent.

I had hundreds of tapes that I scammed off of Columbia House. Lol I do like being able to stream tunes. I gladly pay \~$15 a month to have unlimited access to whatever I want to listen to whenever I want to listen to it. I figure this is the equivalent of buying one CD/album a month. I listen to some pretty obscure stuff, but I've only stumped my streaming service a couple times.

I manage a team of 8. Most are early 30s to mid-20s. They get so bent out of shape when you give them any kind of negative feedback. Even if it's completely supportive and constructive. Like, I don't want you to bring your "authentic self" to work. That's for after work with your friends. I'm not here to make you feel good. That's your parent's/therapist's job. I am not your surrogate parent. I'm your boss. If I want your feedback...I'll ask for it.
