What’s something weird or unexpected that actually helped you in an interview?

Posted by Fast_Ask1244@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 57 comments

asterallt@reddit

Hard agree with this. I end up interviewing a lot of people in my job and it’s soul destroying if, after 40 minutes, you say ‘do you have any questions for us?’. And they say ‘nope, I can’t think of any right now’. The best interviews have been a proper two way thing - they’re the ones that stand out. Good luck!

How do you progress in careers when you're not a confident person, interviews are hell?

You don’t need confidence. You just naturally show that by emailing or texting and reaching out to people. People like to feel needed or wanted, so you reaching out to them strokes their ego and makes them feel like they have something to offer. Then when you meet they’re already in that mindset. It’s subtle. But you’ll start to see it. But not going to sugarcoat it, it genuinely is 100 coffees to get something.

My advice is don’t rely on interviews. Ask for coffees with influential people. And just keep having them week after week. I’ve never applied for a job. I’ve always had about 100 coffees with various people in different companies before each job I’ve got. Just talk to people, engage, take on advice, and just ONE of them will realise you’re the perfect person for the role they have in mind. Then when you go to interview you’ll already have had someone say ‘guys, this is the one we want’. More than happy if you want to DM me about how to go about getting the coffees in. But I promise it’s just about putting yourself out there and continuing to talking to people… I know it seems ridiculous and bloody hard work but long-term it’s more efficient than interviews.

I remember in the 90s my little brother and sister (twins - eight years old) asking Gary Lineker for his autograph at a restaurant in Spain. He said ‘Will you PLEASE leave me the FUCK alone’ so they turned around, walked back to our table and my sister cried. Guess he’d had a rough day.

My son was about 2-3 years old. Woke up in the night, stood up in his cot screaming ‘MY EYES, MY EYES ARE BLEEDING’. They weren’t. He also called me upstairs when he was about four and asked me to take the blanket off the rocking chair so he could see the old lady who hides behind it. Left that house after a bit.

New paint, no matter how scrappily applied, can do wonders. Plus some furniture that makes it feel like your sanctuary. Not talking going mad - a second hand armchair next to a window that gets the sun, little table next to it. Find a couple of your favourite books that make you feel warm and leave them out. Get some cheap cushions and blankets from the Range (I don’t really like the Range but it serves a purpose). Dunelm lamps - can get them for a fiver or so, add soft lighting which makes a place feel warmer. Couple of cheap plants. You could do all of that in a weekend and it’ll already feel more like your place. Totally normal to panic about such a big purchase. But you have it now, which is AMAZING - your actual OWN place. So now you can spend the next few weeks and months making it feel like your place, somewhere you want to spend time. Not much you can do about the area but if you can get to a point where when you shut the front door, you feel comfortable, you’ll probably have fewer regrets about the purchase. Good luck. And hope you have a better time of it post separation. Sounds like you’ve had a hell of a horrible time so I wish you all the best.

Totally unrelated but similar style. I was once packing up at a car boot sale and this shifty guy comes over very slowly, eyeing everything up as we packed it. He leaned over and said, very close to my ear, ‘have you… have you got any… BAROMETERS’.

These replies have made me feel so much better. I tend to have 3-4 instant a day at home. In the office I start with a four shot coffee then maybe have another two flat whites. I think I’m more concerned about the fucking milk than caffeine at this stage.

Is it a normal book to put in a year 4 reading list for 9 year olds to read?

Posted by Commercial_Guest_992@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 436 comments

I’d say that’s more a problem of that being the only copy in the library than being on the school reading list. It’s the images that are the problem for a nine year old. Maybe one without pictures wouldn’t seem so problematic.

I met the guy that made my life hell for five years, about 10 years after we left school at a party. He said ‘alright?’ and looked a bit awkward. I couldn’t believe how small he looked. Not physically like short or thin. Just a small, small man. I said ‘alright’ and then went and chatted to my wife, caught up with a few mates, then left without saying goodbye to him. I doubt he had any comprehension what he did to me but I didn’t really want to spend anymore time in the same house as him than strictly necessary. I guess in your situation you just have to hope they’re matured a bit. But just remember that all bullies, young and old, thrive on power dynamics. You already work there and have experience so you have an advantage on the dynamic from day one. Good luck.

Are GCSE’s as serious for your life as the teachers say they are?

Posted by Keewaa1@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 225 comments

asterallt@reddit

Are they important for a 40 year old? Probably not. Are they important for a 16 year old to have confidence going into A levels and not just scraping in? Yes. Same as A levels are important if you want to go to Uni or get an apprenticeship. Same as doing well at uni or that apprenticeship gives you a spring in your step to your first proper job. It’s always about the next step. Keep plugging away. This period of your life, right now, ahead of GCSEs, is so short. Just ace it and you get the summer off to chill and then go again in September.

This is a great answer, thank you. Couldn’t agree more. I had surgery on a broken arm four weeks ago and I also fractured my other arm at the same time. The kicker was a car accident while I was a passenger on the way back from hospital so also had whiplash and bruised ribs (was some serious Final Destination shit going on in March 2026 🤣). Been sleeping on the sofa every night since and haven’t slept more than an hour or so at a time for four weeks. At most four hours total a night. Never had trouble sleeping before so it took a while to get used to but it’s fine. Yes I’m tired but I’m functioning and you just get on with your day. I still find the time being still, quiet and in the dark restorative.

What’s the silliest reason you’ve witnessed or heard about someone going to A &E?

Posted by nWoSting145@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 203 comments

asterallt@reddit

The opposite end of the scale - I hate hanging around in A&E. I had two bumps to the head and a sore arm after a couple of crashes skiing last week. Called 111 and they said to go to A&E. Instead I went to the local urgent care centre coz I didn’t want to cause a fuss and take up space at A&E. They assessed me for concussion and said it probably was concussion but they then sent me to A&E for my arm. Five hours and an x ray later, they confirmed I had a broken arm (top bit of my humerus had come off). Next day surgery and now at home feeling like a right twat for skiing on a broken arm for two days. Never broken anything before and can confirm it hurts like buggery. BUT! Always call 111 first. They’re good and know what they’re talking about.

Check snow reports on Scottish ski fields. Should be able to get some decent snow if you keep an eye on forecasts. If you’re in south of England, you can figure out cheapest eurotunnel and drive to French Alps. Eight hours driving isn’t for everyone but you can stop for lunch and dinner on the way there and back. You can stay somewhere super cheap at the bottom of the mountain where there’s no snow (but have views of snowy mountains) and then drive up each day to find the snow. If you’re not skiing there’s no reason for it to be expensive. You’d have a great time! We decided to go skiing with a day’s notice last year on the 29th Dec. Left the next morning at 5am. Following day we were skiing! Stayed four nights in an airbnb and then drove back. Was great fun.
