You could get two dozen people to nick one each and walk around town in suits and bowler hats like the Thomas Crown Affair.

The pallet is worth more than the stuff stacked on it it.
UppaCelts1888@reddit
Thats a given. Considering pallets these days have armed guards cus of how often they get nicked.
WanderWomble@reddit
The deep planter bags are £7 each or 2 for £10. The wood chippings are currently £8.50 (on sale from £12.50). The orange bags are £8 each.
bacon_cake@reddit
Yeah but they're not worth that to the shops.
Two for a tenner is £5 each which is £4.16 after VAT, which means it's probably costing them less than £2.
HMS_Greggs@reddit
Meanwhile, pallets are way more expansive than you think.
A cheap one which will fall apart if you look at it too hard is about £30.
A good, weather-proof one is about £100.
bacon_cake@reddit
Blimey, I didn't know that. At work we usually just accumulate them from deliveries but when I have bought them I've only ever paid £15 for a 1000kg Euro/container size 'heavy duty' pallet.
MilesyBoy303@reddit
That’s the sale price not the cost to them or the insured price. They’ll be worth prob less than a pound a bag to the company. Any stole will be covered by insurance
blahehblah@reddit
How much is home delivery
WanderWomble@reddit
Standard delivery is from £4. Big and bulky delivery is from £35.
blahehblah@reddit
Is standard delivery available also to people in masks outside of regular working hours?

My experience in retail is very different, I worked at The Range in warehouse. People will steal literally anything given the chance, we once had someone pull down a fence to steal a wheel barrow from the yard. We used to take pallets of compost and chippings in every night because where we were, they would be 100% gone by the morning. Yeah people target certain valuable goods, but given the chance they will take anything.

To this day, I've never understood it 🤣

Totally unrelated but similar style. I was once packing up at a car boot sale and this shifty guy comes over very slowly, eyeing everything up as we packed it. He leaned over and said, very close to my ear, ‘have you… have you got any… BAROMETERS’.

I used to work at B&Q nights and used to let someone leave at 5 am so would go open the door for her and smoke a cigarette at the same time. I used to see a guy drive up in his car, load up alot of bricks, sand, cinder blocks etc we kept outside, put them in his car and drive off. From where I was standing he couldnt see me. He did this everyday, 7 days a week I think, I told the night manager but he didnt give a shit and I bet this guys still doing it till this day. I used to work there nearly 10 years ago and I figure over that time hes stolen thousands of pounds worth of stock. They keep pallets of stock lined up outside of the goods in in the car park there. He must have been doing it for a long time before too.

Heard a story a long time ago about a security guard whod just started his shift on one of the Dock gates in Liverpool. One day he sees a fella pushing a wheelbarrow out of the gate with a shovel full of sand in it. Half an hour later same guy with the wheelbarrow pushes it out the gate and the guard thinks... something funny going on here or what and sees the chap turning off the Dock road into a side road 50 yards up, so he follows him. When he gets to the corner he sees a pile of sand on the pavement and a flatbed truck with about 50 wheelbarrows loaded up pulling away from the curb and driving into the distance

I was about to go on a rant about how some people don’t live in places that it seems reasonable to be outside the influence of a bunch of cameras before I saw where I was.
I have no idea how or why I have askUK as a sub on my feed but as an American that lives in the middle of nowhere this sentiment made me short circuit for a moment.
Locksmithbloke@reddit
You've got Flock, you're covered.
obliviious@reddit
What would stop someone steeling a big bag of wood chips down your way?
Helpinmontana@reddit
The same exact thing, that it’s not worth it, regardless of the presence of cameras.
Personally I only rob liquor stores and pharmacies. That’s where the real money is.
OkSun8521@reddit
There is no "they" that would do that.
The thing stopping people from doing this is that there are far better things to steal.
How_did_the_dog_get@reddit
You say that but when soil is about 80 a tonne bag but delivery is 200. Just rocking up and throwing a few bags a night doesn't seem like a bad Idea. I need a few
OkSun8521@reddit
Those are not tonne bags. They're 50 litre sacks. It's 3 for £15.
Ok-Personality-6630@reddit
Professional thieves - not worth time and hassle nor risk for the value
Opportunistic thieves - this is probably out the way out of town. Too cumbersome no vehicle to transport
Someone wanting a freebie - not worth the criminal record
Also low cost. So the store doesn't really have much to lose
mrpegram1@reddit
You would end up spending more in labour having someone take it in and out of the shop every night, better off risking having a few bags stolen.
SeoulGalmegi@reddit

BlueFox789@reddit
No you are not supposed to say that. The correct word is number plate
Intelligent-Mud6320@reddit
It's not about "supposed to" but whether you are integrated into the UK linguistic system that doesn't use "license plate" as the description for the said item.
Nearlyepic1@reddit
The uk "linguistic system" is a mess anyway. I'm in the north and I can hardly understand londers sometimes. Not to mention i cobsome more US media than british, so its not like the words are unfamiliar to me
Glad-Struggle-4056@reddit

Youutternincompoop@reddit
I mean, you could just use the trolleys rather than bringing your own wheelbarrow

Youutternincompoop@reddit
yes, no offense but that sounds like a skill issue to me
eschatologue4499@reddit
Used to work at a B&M which was in the same retail park as a Wickes, every now and then either first thing in the morning or late at night, you'd see a guy rock up with a wheelbarrow, pack it full of compost or bark chippings and wheel it across to the Tesco car park over the road.
Another guy, or possibly the same guy, just used to rock up with his transit and load up. Shameless, honestly.

Heavy bags of low value stuff. Not worth the risk.
Who's going to want to mess about nicking that and having to try to sell it. Its only about 6 quid a bag in the shop.
ASOXO@reddit
These big box locations generally have a closed gable gate. Good luck carrying multiple bags across a forecourt.
EwanCakebread@reddit
That's probably way too large for a mask. I suspect so.eone in a van might be more of a threat
SteveGoral@reddit
They've probably done the maths and worked out the cost of paying an employee to put it all away, then compared that to the cost of a few bags going missing. It's probably cheaper for them to write off a few bags a night than it is to pay someone to put it all away.
It'll probably take an hour to put it away and then get it out again, that's £90 a week or £360 a month. Definitely cheaper to just absorb the cost of a few bags going walkabout.
bigboyjak@reddit
The Wickes I worked at would bring them in at night. It would take less than 10 mins with the electric pump truck. We would just dump the pallets wherever inside, as long as the staff can get in and out. They'd be one of the first things taken back out in the mornings
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
TIL: electric pump truck upkeep is free and electric pump truck drivers don't get paid more than minimum wage.
SLBen@reddit
I know this comment is old but I have to ask: what do you think costs more? These items being stolen or the most minuscule amount of wear and tear on the lifting equipment to move a few pallets?
Fudge_is_1337@reddit
They aren't hiring additional minimum wage staff to carry out this job. It's 20 minutes out of someone's 6-8 hour shift
RandomLiam@reddit
i also worked at at a wickes, they don’t pay extra for even the forklift drivers. everyone gets trained on the electric pump truck. and yes it was minimum wage.
bigboyjak@reddit
What are you on about? There wasn't a dedicated pump truck driver, it was just whoever was shutting the front end, usually the one on till, who was paid minimum wage.
Sure there's upkeep.. but we had the pump truck anyway, using it for what it's made for isn't exactly going to be any different
Plank_With_A_Nail_In@reddit
They are selling the bags at £8.50 but it probably only costs them £1 a bag to buy them in so if 360 go missing a month then they would break even.
SteveGoral@reddit
Exactly, they're probably so cheap it's simply not worth the cost of protecting them. Some stores obviously do protect them as stated by another comment but I bet that's not common.
pubehead@reddit
Sooooo, they want me to take it, and by doing so I'm helping them save money, got it. Thanks !
I need some compost for the free pansies they give you outside ASDA.
CR0SBO@reddit

Likewise I’ve seen numerous stores in the uk using a pallet truck to wheel the pallets in just before closing time, lining them all up in an aisle and wheeling it out in the morning. Must just be at the shops discretion

Police officer here:
Nothing - stuff gets nicked all the time from places like this and more. People steal pub garden furniture, bags of coal from fuel stations, shopping trolleys…. Then a few days later it gets reported to police and you get a cloned reg plate (which is probably no longer active) and some footage filmed on what you would have thought was a camera from WW2.
TOPSHOTTAH@reddit (OP)
Right lol it really is just a trust system, there is no way police would actually track the cameras in the area to follow someone suspected to have taken some bags right? 👀 asking for a friend ofcourse

Your chances of a successful prosecution are so low that you could never justify trying to do a CCTV trawl in an attempt to track the vehicle.

about 15 years ago, I was a stock taker for Wickes. Every day I would stock take. At the end of year one, it was an average of £4000 a day missing.
I say average, Because we only really got the real numbers when counting things like Taps, Copper fittings, tools and boots.
One method people would use would be to stack bags of sand or shingle on their trolley and hide things under or between the bags. Pretty much none of the people on the tils would pick up bags off the trolley (because heavy, and there is a queue), they would just walk around it for a rough count.
Copper fittings and even pipes would just be passed through or over the fence in the timber yard. They would even "borrow" tin snips to cut wider holes in the fence.

I mean its not worth much. What you wanna do is get an impact driver and a sawsall and just start taking infrastructure home with you. You can take anything really, play park, fencing, motorway guard rails, electrical infrastructure if you're brave enough. Road signs are good scrap they're aluminum. Put on some high vis, swap your plates before you leave the house and just start going at it. Catalytic converters are a pretty good start to dip your toes in. That way you only need the sawsall too, saves a lot of money getting into the hobby.

I worked at Wickes and B&Q when I was younger. In the stores I worked in, the pallets of this out front were simply brought in overnight. Any in the fenced garden centre were left out, just low value and not worth stealing considering the tall fence.
However, we did have someone hide a bunch of tools in said fenced area behind/under racking and fencing, then proceeded to come back in the night, break in the fencing and take them all. I think it was a few thousand pounds worth. Sad, but kind of impressive.

Nothing. But it's cheap, heavy, and large.
To steal an amount to make the crime worthwhile you'd need a lorry and a forklift, which is going to be time consuming, make lots of noise, and everything will be recorded if you're not stopped in the act.
Then you have a few tonnes of cheap garden bits to try sell off, which is cheap enough that people will just go but it from a proper place rather than a man in a questionable lorry.
-suspicious-badger@reddit
Because you would probably only get £1 a bag down the pub, that’s if you can shift them at all. If you wanted to take multiple bags you would need a vehicle, and that adds a whole extra level of risk of getting caught.
Basically the risk/reward just isn’t there. And it would probably cost more to pay the staff to move them at closing and opening times that the loss of the odd bag every now and again.
Mindless-Lobster-920@reddit
Nothing, I used to work at a Wickes and we'd frequently lose a few bags overnight. We'd usually bring the pallets in every night, which as you can imagine was a bit of a mission and sometimes was not possible - particularly if the entrance/exit area was congested with promotional material.
Allegedly a head office analyst had determined that the amount of bags the stores lost through theft was vastly outweighed by the additional sales made from keeping the stock at the front of the store

General decency.
You know, like the thing that underpins almost all aspects of nice quality of life.
If everybody has to always assume the worst of everyone else, and constantly guard against malicious actors who place no value on the community, then a huge amount of things just get quietly worse and worse. It's why supermarkets lock up the booze and force you to ask a store assistant to get it for you, why parks are locked late at night, why there's CCTV cameras literally everywhere now. It's all just symptoms of social trust slowly disappearing as communities get larger and less connected, both culturally and physically.
Disastrous_Case_3834@reddit
I used to work for Home Depot and mulch bags don’t turn a great profit (when they are on sale, its a net loss), so its not something we guard extra tightly. Also from the fact that they are heavy and awkward to cart off.
They are there to draw people in and it appears like we have full stock of items. These low margin items are usually places by high margin items to get you to buy things, like “oh I need to mulch my garden; oh my, look at that patio furniture that would look great next to my mulched garden”.
Many-Giraffe-2341@reddit
When I worked at B&Q, it was a half hour job at the beginning and end of the day to bring this stuff in / out.

sickibaba@reddit
Work in a big Home Bargains Store in the garden center. We are lucky to have electric pallet trucks but to put away and then re put out in a tidy manner is no easy stright forward task, means staff coming in before open to put these out say 45 min before opening. Time and investment for something we sell for £7.99 90L that probably costs the company less than half just isn't time efficient.
Company's want efficient staff and dallying about moving these isn't a priority.
The big bags of bark are heavy. Some days I can move 10s of them plus over 100 bags of compost and stone. Yeah its tiring obviously the more you do something physically the better you get but for your average person its surprising and sad how weak some people are think more bags getting ripped in corners ect. You'd want a van nearby and you want a couple bodies on the job.
Plus another thing to contend with is cost of equipment a lot of companies go with cheap manual pallet trucks which is a ball ache as you have to throw your body into every direction to get momentum.

Low value, not too easy to sell on, and you'd need a vehicle to take a meaningful amount, you could remove plates but there's a good chance you could be tracked on cctv from neighbouring buildings, be worth it for gold bricks, not for compost.
But.... if this was on your way home from the pub I reckon you could help yourself to one every couple of days and no one would notice, and therfore want to go back and check the CCTV

Realistically you’d need a car to shift more than a bag. There will be cameras all over, not just in the car park but on the way to the car park so unless you also nick a car to load up you’re probably going to get caught.
kernowgringo@reddit
Common sense
Remarkable-Ad155@reddit
Think through the logistics of this. It's heavy as fuck, so you're going to need some kind of vehicle so you can carry enough to make the reward remotely worth the risk. So now it's not just your face you have to hide but the registration of your vehicle, as the car park likely has ANPR. It will also take a while to load up so you probably want a team of people so you can do it quick enough to get away before whoever s monitoring the cctv spots what's going on and calls the police to tell them there's a gang of masked men loading up a van (which they can give a detailed description of including the reg or point out the reg is covered, so even if it's an unmarked white van you're easy to spot) and you've now got several people who might blab. Then you have to find somebody willing to buy it in bulk or somewhere to hide it whilst you sell it off at a couple of quid a time. Police will be aware of the crime and it won't take long for them to catch you if you're going around pubs shotting bags of bark and compost.
It might vaguely make sense if you had a specific need and were willing to travel to the other side of the country to do it (because you can guarantee police will be asking questions of anyone in the area doing a garden renovation or local landscapers so suddenly appearing with a load of this stuff you can't explain where it came from will be a problem) and were well organised enough to fill up the van, get away and switch plates quickly and slickly enough you didn't get spotted on the way back but at that point, is it really worth the bother for a low value haul?
You'd genuinely be better off selling class As, much better margin and almost certainly lower risk than this.

The weight, I'd imagine.
Bionaught5@reddit
No need for a mask, just a Hi-Vis jacket and white van. Seriously though the value vs punishment is not worth it. And the unfit thief is likely to get a hernia loading up more than a couple of bags in their car.

People that garden aint really the stealing type

Ah yes cause the black market is flooded with bark chippings and potting soil

Hey that's my local Wickes too 😄 Love that burger van 😛
pho-tog@reddit
Better be willing to drive far with it, they link up with other stores surveillance and can track for miles. Try it and get caught.
Plenty_Suspect_3446@reddit
I expect it's all on pallets and they move them inside when the shop closes.

Bright_Tap4495@reddit
It gets wheeled in at night before closing? Or it did when I worked at b&q
ajslov@reddit
Some Wickes don't depending on the location and setup. Mine don't as it's in an enclosed space so no one should be going there after closing.
MaximilianClarke@reddit
You’ve stumbled upon the concept of theft. Other people have had the same idea and it happens surprisingly often

LateToTheParty013@reddit
I was thinking about this question too but I thought, usually its full of cameras so you couldnt park close, and then taking them far away is a pain in the back, since they re heavy.
Blah-Blah-Blah-2023@reddit
Meh, I'm just gonna go steal my local farmer's wheat crop. Gate isn't even locked!

cctv, heavy/bulky low value items that are quite difficult to carry. To move large quantities, you need a car which can be tracked, Korean roof snipers. also cctv once notices activity, can easily despatch security.
theabominablewonder@reddit
It’s better if you just go in and ask for a sample, then just repeat that each day, maybe rotate around different stores. You’ll soon have a bag full without stealing any.
GhostRiders@reddit
Only an idiot would ask this

Same thing that's stopping you paying for 6 and putting 10 in your car... nothing.

Dogmata@reddit
Only something said by someone who hasn’t had to carry that shit, it’s dam. Heavy you’d need a van and a team of guys for very little return unless you actually needed to use it yourself
beejiu@reddit
It's Top Soil. To quote David Mitchell, "it comes out of the fucking ground".
reeko1982@reddit
Theres a couple of building sites on our dog walk, I wondered a very similar thing when I saw 20 odd palettes of bricks and other oddments only guarded by a construction fence. I’m no thief, and I think it’s abhorrent, just idly wondering whilst wandering.
rogeroutmal@reddit
My step dad (horrid abusive fuker) used to drag merino building sites at night when I was a child so he could steal materials. Not a pallet of bricks mind, but plenty of other stuff
PM_ME_UR-DOGGO@reddit
Pallet of bricks is what £400 and a nightmare to deal with, old grannies purse is easy and the same value
themattigan@reddit
Go back after closing hours and see if it's still there
It's all sitting on pallets for a reason... 😉
Terrible-Group-9602@reddit
It being fucking heavy!
wannabie@reddit
Because it's the UK. You don't need to wait until then being closed, just take it and walk off.

Apart from common decency you mean?
Remarkable_Bet_4131@reddit
Because any decent thief would steal something thats actullay wanted and easy to sell and carry/conceal. Garden centres arnt normally in town centres. So even if you didnt have to carry a massive ammount of weight a long distance and had a car and loaded it up, you wouldnt get very much cash, if any. Coz who wants a load of soil or bark chipping?
Mental_Body_5496@reddit
I used to work in a petrol station on night shift and often forgot to lock the log and coal bins - nobody ever nicked anything - not really a big black market for coal even in the 90s !
