I used to go a lot and loved it. I agree it has changed a lot over the years but I hope eventually to make one final trip. I have done Florida, California and Paris many times but have not been for over fifteen years. But if I get the chance I will make one final special trip to Tokyo Disney. They have two parks and hotels, it will still be Disney but with a twist.

There is a school of thought in the UK that when you go for a walk … you take walking poles. I live in the countryside and people like this are everywhere. I never see anyone like this when I go to the shops.

In England where I live there are quite a few areas where there is no polling today. It would need to be standardised before it became a Bank Holiday.

Is it normal to watch TV in your garden in the UK?

Posted by pollen345@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 566 comments

Search-Lite@reddit

Agreed. The ground is private but noise will travel on the air (which is shared) to neighbouring gardens. As for the law that depends on the country but many do have rules about nuisance noise.

But the garden is not a private space. It shares the same air as the neighbours. Indoors is private but the garden is a shared outdoor area chopped up by trees and fencing.

I wanted a Buddha ornament and checked out the charity shops. One had a similar type to one I had liked in a regular shop. However the charity shop version was double the price. I never went in one again. It brought new meaning to the concept of ‘chugging’.

What can be done about the growing energy cost divide?

Posted by Altruistic_Fruit2345@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 180 comments

Search-Lite@reddit

No standing charges. You don’t pay a standard charge for other types of business and they all have overheads. A standing charge means that those who can’t afford to use electricity and gas all the time are paying towards the privilege of those who can. And no more nonsense about giving cheap electricity to people on benefits, as there are people on lower incomes who do not get benefits. Then there are all the added extras such as a renewables charge. No. The basic cost involved in utilities should be just that… basic.

Should theses auditors be banned?

Posted by Various_Extreme_8773@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 968 comments

Search-Lite@reddit

That would depend on the country. In England and Wales if you wanted to film in public in the past you had to get permission from the council. I don’t think that has changed but the councils do not enforce it. However at some point the councils may wish to review that and find a way to monetise the videos. If filming in public without permission gets you a fine then people may not be so keen.

Crumpets work best with melted cheese. The surface should look a little toasted. When you bite into it the texture should be kind of gooey, without actually being gooey.

I had that problem at my last address just inside my garden as I had no gate. I was told to pour vinegar on the driveway as the smell would be off putting and they would go elsewhere. I did that every two weeks during the summer and so had no more trouble. N.B. I did wait till the vinegar dried before going inside, but that only took a couple of minutes.

Why is being cold at home so normalised in the UK?

Search-Lite@reddit

I believe it has its origins in the Two World Wars last century. The second one coming so soon after the first practically broke us. My Nan was born in 1900 and died in the 90s. She barely used heating, not because she didn’t like it but because she placed food as a priority due to shortages during and after the wars. The state pension was also extremely poor, making basic choices important and then there was the war mentality which meant that you did without to keep the war effort going. Afterwards money was tight for almost everyone until the 80s and the ‘do without’ mentality was passed down the generations.

Stealing from a corner shop is nasty. They often have low mark ups on products. They will have debts in the form of a lease and the loan they used to buy the shop. Then they have to buy the products at much higher prices than chain stores. Also there will be staff wages, utility bills etc. The lowest of the low steal from corner shops.
