Reasons I can think of a driving honking randomly 1. They think you're attractive 2. They think they know you 3. To get a laugh if they startle you 4. To kindly get your attention if the bus is not far behind. 5. They've dropped someone off and are honking goodbye to them.

1, I think it’s someone being kidnapped. People might take a video shot of the number plate to check later to if they knew the car. 2, the bus stop is not being used on those days due to road works elsewhere (it happened to me), 3, a passenger reaching over to get at the Trebor Extra Strong Mints (Mine are in my door panel pocket). 4, fiddling with their phone, watch, fly zip, lighted cigarette dropped in their lap. Or possibly they do know you but it’s too dark in the car for you to see them. (The most obvious answer imho.)

If it’s a stop where multiple buses stop then maybe it’s just to get your attention. Some people flag a bus down (which is correct) some people just assume the bus will stop if they just stand there looking dopey. I’ve seen drivers slow down to see if the person waiting wants that bus or a different one. Don’t forget the driver can’t necessarily see if you’re looking at the bus or not.

Maybe you look a lot like someone else in your town? If they smile or wave then that could be it.

It could be for 100s of reasons, most of which have nothing to do with you. People honk if birds are in the road, or they see their friend at the bus stop on the other side of the road, or there's one unhinged driver who thinks it's funny... it could be anything.

In my mind there's a bit of graffiti on the bus stop that says "honk if you're horny" or similar! 🤣
