Would I look weird walking through the woods on my own?

29F and autistic but the woods really calm me down and help with my sensory overwhelm. Problem is my dog died recently so I don’t have one to walk with. I’ve seen couples walking through the woods with no dog but I’ve never seen anyone alone. Would I look weird? I would have an earphone in one ear but my hair would prob be down so no one would notice. This is a real concern of mine and I’m really looking for what the general British public think please? Thanks.
Netlifeathome@reddit
Not weird at all. We regularly walk past people on their own in the woods or sitting alone on one of the benches with their thoughts.
Can't say I have ever looked at any of them as being weird for being on their own. Just out enjoying nature.
EstoppelByWaffle@reddit
You wouldn't look weird at all. Plenty of people, including me, walk through the woods alone.
Anyone that sees you wouldn't think twice about it.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I think I’m overthinking with the whole autistic being perceived thing 😅 x
Kiloyankee-jelly46@reddit
I get it! I've been out for a few walks lately where I've been wanting to hug a tree because it's a source of oxytocin (I live alone and my cat is great but too small to lean on). I do NOT want to be seen hugging trees. I managed to do it but with ear buds in, next step is to do it without.
Anyway, walking alone is great! It's how I get a lot of places, and there's not one to be put out if you want to go slow or fast or stop and take pictures of moss and lichens....or hug a tree.
Glittering_Vast938@reddit
Ha ha - I’ve done this too but made sure no one was looking. Trees are awesome!
Alyssa9876@reddit
I love to just stand under a tree and touch the trunk of it. Sort of be quiet and feel its energy in the spot.
R1ck_Sanchez@reddit
I'm autistic and do woods foraging. My heads darting around as I identify the surroundings and I've never had bad encounters with people, neutral and good only! And if I or you ever have a bad experience, being called out for seeming weird, that's their judgement, they have a right to it, but it's them being weird if anything.
Expensive-Draw-6897@reddit
Would a foraging basket/bag as an accessory make you feel more comfortable?
When I'm out for a walk on my own, I often think people are staring at me especially when I'm near a park. Maybe I'm just being paranoid.
R1ck_Sanchez@reddit
I have em, haven't taken the basket out yet but a kind of hip bag. It shows intent more but I don't like the concept of 'I found some mushies, time to get out the badge that shows I'm not a weirdo'. Boy better know 😤
parksa@reddit
Sometimes I get in my head when I'm on solo walks and pass groups of people too. Then I just think, hey I've every right as anyone to enjoy nature and it really brings me peace and recharges me being in green spaces alone. Go for it!
Playful_Beyond_2218@reddit
Try sunglasses, it really helps me with this!
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Oooh yes I love audiobooks and sunglasses too especially as they make the eye contact thing easier. Thank you!
wykniv@reddit
A hat helps me feel a bit more incognito, too. Not a ridiculous hat, obviously - just a beanie type thing if it's cold or a cap if it's hot.
Morganx27@reddit
Wear a wizard hat and people will just be like "oh yeah, it's a wizard. The forest is where they love, fair enough."
TehDragonGuy@reddit
I don't disagree, but I wanna be clear this isn't needed. If it makes OP feel more comfortable then great but nobody is going to think about it either way.
ashakespearething@reddit
Please go and enjoy a walk in the woods, now is perfect with the bluebells. The Japanese call it forest bathing, sometimes I'll just go and have a sit (alone!) in the woods to clear my head.
honestlyVERYhonest@reddit
Fully understand the overthinking. I would advise not doing it when it's dark, but otherwise nobody will give a shit.
Maybe scream the lyrics to whatever you're listening to so any predatory people are terrified.
TheWarmestHugz@reddit
I agree, the woods is such a relaxing place for many people to enjoy for various reasons. It's just nice to get out of the house and experience nature.
spellbookwanda@reddit
As long as you’re careful go for it
Kaioken64@reddit
I don't walk through the woods alone, but do so a lot with my wife and see a shit load of people on their own.
Can confirm not once have I ever thought they were weird.
_pankates_@reddit
I'm a big wood-walker and I see solo walkers all the time. Never given it a second thought. Sometimes people smile or say hi and sometimes not, it's all good.

I walk through the woods every day by myself and see plenty of other single walkers. Even my neighbour's son, who has autism, goes into the woods to take pictures of bugs and no one thinks he is different.
FromAcrosstheStars@reddit
No? I always walk through the woods alone and see quite a few others do it too
Littlelindsey@reddit
You would not look weird. However you do need to consider your safety when walking alone in the woods especially without a dog
MaxximumB@reddit
Not at all. I used to love walking through our local woods by myself. I used to regularly see others walking by themselves
myboyfriendsback777@reddit
No, you would not. I encourage you! Not only do I walk in the woods alone, I will also randomly hug and/or smell random trees/plants/bushes. It’s very calming for me.
Of course, I’m 57, ADD, I I just don’t GAF what anyone else thinks.
Upbeat-Metal-5087@reddit
Not at all. I love walking through woods and also through dartmoor and Exmoor. Your fine. Just dont litter and your golden
Disgruntled__Goat@reddit
Definitely not weird. I go walking alone regularly, and often see others doing the same. Walking in nature is great to chill out :)
mattreed857@reddit
Not weird but be careful, there may be really weird people there
infinitedadness@reddit
Yeah, but we're the good weird people.
seta_roja@reddit
If you want to see weird people, try a shopping mall or big city centre
mattreed857@reddit
Maybe you are right
TrueSpring2772@reddit
Think about where you are and who’s around you
Think about the amount of illegals
Dnny10bns@reddit
Nope, you're fine. Lots of people do it for the same reasons. It's calming.
IndividualPotato2026@reddit
No but consider whether your area is safe.
swanbrin@reddit
I take my dogs to the woods occasionally. I really wouldn’t think anything of it as I’d be too preoccupied with my dogs, one is a bit of social nightmare due to previous trauma, the other would be thrilled if she made a new friend. Just take each person as they come. We’re all too focussed on ourselves and our own situation to really think about strangers we encounter whilst out and about :)
Wonderful_Falcon_318@reddit
Wear a rucksack, I'm a M and wearing a rucksack, plus walking/hiking boots, creates huge credibility.
Sxn747Strangers@reddit
I've regularly walked through the woods by myself and sometimes I've seen other people who are by themselves too.
Absolutely just go for it.
_RustyBeard@reddit
I frequently walk on my own. Occasionally a dog owner will look at me oddly, as if to say "Why are you walking on your own?"
Normally I just ignore it, Occasionally I will whistle as though calling my own dog.
And very, very Occasionally, if the other individual is a "character", I may shout "Tiberius (or similar), here, leave it alone"
Neacag@reddit
I would just think you were out walking for exercise. Not weird at all.
ArcticWolf_Primaris@reddit
Unless you plan to walk directly towards them with a machete while grinning wildly, you should be good.
Far_Kaleidoscope_102@reddit
If you want to look the part get yourself some hiking sticks and a backpack
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Ooh really? I actually have mobility issues so maybe hiking stick might be a genuine help anyway! Thanks
JoannaCuppa@reddit
If you're in West Yorkshire, I also have the tism and love walking in woods. DM me if you fancy a meander at some point (am female and not a serial killer...or even a one off killer 😁).

or take a lead and call out the name of an imaginary dog thats just run off....... "Fenton....... FENTON!!!!"
(joking aside, as a previous dog walker im sure if you saw somone walking through woods without a dog you wouldnt have batted an eye - i know i wouldnt)
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
That’s funny 😂I have considered taking my house cat out in pet pram but I think that would draw more attention than just being alone 😅
more-random-words@reddit
I had a nervous cat and would walk her over to the park in the nighttime / evenings (was close, I lived in a square) - it was nice but even that got comments from neighbours :)
Rocky-bar@reddit
Blimey, that would get you on the local evening news!

I see people walking alone all the time (I work outdoors in rural areas, often on back lanes). It’s not weird at all and loads of people do it.
wildflower12345678@reddit
Its not weird. Take the walks.
CynicalRecidivist@reddit
I walk through the woods by myself all the time! It's a wonderfully calming environment and I have my ear phones in sometimes.
I love it, and my daughter has been told to scatter my ashes in that wood.
Go for it OP. Enjoy your solitary time XXX (If I see you I'll wave!)
ben_jamin_h@reddit
Absolutely not! I walk my dogs a lot in the woods near me, but sometimes I go for a walk without them too. I see plenty of people walking alone and when I see them I just think "Ah. Someone enjoying a nice walk in the woods." Crack on mate, you're fine!
Ok_Young1709@reddit
I walk all the time in woods on my own. Got over ear headphones on and just go for a nice walk. If anyone thinks I'm weird, they are weird.
cari-strat@reddit
Walk, enjoy it. If you're really concerned about looking odd, or like you're up to no good, carry a camera or a book on wildlife and people will just think you're looking for flora and fauna.
Logical_Hat_47@reddit
I walk alone through the woods all the time. You don't need a dog or a friend to do that. Enjoy your walks!

Sorry to hear about your dog. You wouldn’t look weird at all. One of my kids goes for long country walks on his own. Enjoy the fresh air and exercise
Morganx27@reddit
Go for it, I don't think anyone will find you weird. I greet most people I come across (smile and nod or a friendly hello) which I think helps people understand that I'm not some sort of weird little creature that lives in the woods
superhansrunningclub@reddit
I walk in the woods by myself all the time and the thought that it might be weird has never crossed my mind. That's coming from someone who is a massive overthinker.
Grand_Equipment5292@reddit
No you wouldn't look weird.
Also, the sooner you stop giving a fuck what other people think of you, the better.
Illustrious-Milk6518@reddit
No, not at all. I have no friends in the area I live, so I go for walks on my own all the time. I’ve walked past people also walking on their own too, so it’s much more common than you think.
The only reason that I recall seeing people walk on their own is because I also felt weird, until I realised there were more people walking on their own too😂

You don't need to tell everyone you're autistic, it doesn't affect the question you're asking.
Walking throught the woods alone is fine and normal.
DrMoneybeard@reddit
I think they’re using it to help us understand why they’re questioning the social nuance of the situation.

Fabulous_Run_3383@reddit
Yes, toads mostly and I saw plenty. If you're into that you should definetely tell someone you know first in case in cass of emergency and I take torches, batteries and other kit too. Make sure to be safe.
Emergency-Nebula5005@reddit
Sorry for your loss.
I often meet solo walkers enjoying the woods and nature reserves when I walk my dogs, and never give it a second thought.
Maybe when you feel a little better, put ads around to walk other people's? If you want a little canine company, that is.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Thank you! I actually have a few people who pay me to walk their dogs when they go on holiday etc. I should really advertise as I’m insured and everything.

Hi, I'm AuDHD myself, no, you wouldn't look weird, I do get the worry, especially in new places, about standing out, and looking weird. I always remember, though, that most people don't care what you do, they're wrapped up in their own lives. As a female, though, I would say maybe stick to a more populated part of the woods, and vary routine (I know that's a struggle), I had a scary experience when I used to ride motorcycles of a creep trying to lure me into his car at the woods near me, luckily there were other people, but dread to think what would have happened if not.
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Oh gosh that’s so scary! Thanks for the advice x
snarkmaiden5@reddit
Nah, you're fine, everyone will be in their own little bubble and will pass you by in seconds. Just go out and enjoy nature, forget about the people. A good time for a walk is early morning anyway, less busy but more bird activity 🙂

You'd have to also be doing something very odd, if you are in the woods then you're just someone in the woods to me. Unless you are naked or wearing a deers skull or something why should I bat an eye.
If you really want some fake purpose beyond just enjoying the woods bring some little binoculars and a notebook and then you can say you're a birdwatcher if anyone bothers to bother you.
shadowmoses4726@reddit
you wouldn’t look weird, just make sure you stay safe. if you have anyone close to you, perhaps share your location💕

Ned-Nedley@reddit
Wait. Is that an option? I've been missing out.
IHateTheLetter-C-@reddit
I walk my dog in all sorts of areas and see people walking alone all the time, don't stress! I don't think anything of it, honestly. Another option if you're up for it is see if a nearby shelter takes dog walkers, and take the pups in need out. It might help you feel less odd (even if that feeling is irrational) but it also might make it harder to relax haha

Nope. Loads of people like a solitary walk in the woods. :)

I am sorry to hear about your dog. I hope you find one like him. Maybe your local RSCP can match you with a good one. That may be a fun experience. Can you make a list of things that were special about your dog? Walking through a forest alone is not strange. But it is nice to walk with someone.

paperbagtears@reddit
24F UK here, I always walk through the woods alone. Totally normal, you're overthinking❤️
Turbulent_Ad_880@reddit
I think it depends where you are in the UK...in some places a cheery "Good morning!" or the old favourite "it's a lovely day for it!" is welcomed, in others less so.
But that is ONLY for people walking in the opposite direction. British etiquette means if you're "overtaking" someone either hold back so you don't (stop and tie your shoelace or something) or speed up so you pass as swiftly as possible, but without running. As you get within about a metre or two say "Excuse me", and when they move to let you through pass as wide as the path allows and don't forget to say thank you!
And be assured that if you are NOT British, even with your autism they feel more awkward about the whole thing than you do!
Lewis19962010@reddit

Glittering_Vast938@reddit
I’m autistic too and it took me ages to build up the courage to walk alone due to what people might think!

nintendofan2_0@reddit

DiscoDoberman@reddit
You won't.
It's completely normal.
And other people don't think about you, they don't care.
But so what if you do "look weird" - what's the consequence you fear? What do you think will happen as a result of being perceived to be odd?
Programmer-Severe@reddit
I have extensive woodland near my house, so I'm always walking the dog. I frequently see lone walkers, male and female, and don't bat an eyelid. It's not a problem, nobody is judging 👍
SuperBeeboo@reddit
No not at all. However, as anyone who is autistic and also not autistic knows the level of danger of walking depends on where you live. If you live in a shit area it will be more dangerous to walk in abandoned places alone, whether that be woods or not. That’s what I would care about, not looking “weird “, that’s just ridiculous
Cantbearsed1992@reddit
Not at all, just walking the dogs and walked past a person on their own, it’s lovely out there. Just enjoy nature
stowgood@reddit
If you would feel more comfortable walking looking like you had a purpose you could take something you enjoy with you? Like a camera? binoculars? A sketch book?
Ogoshi_@reddit
I saw a few people this morning walking by themselves in the woods. I was also alone!
stowgood@reddit
Nobody will care unless you have something extra wierd going on like being covered in blood or something. Just a person on their own walking with clothes on normally nobody would give a second thought to.
This does seem like a good time to get another dog if you liked the first one. Do you miss walking the dog? Would it make you more comfotable / happier / motivated to walk if you had a dog?
Please go and enjoy the woods.
VRS38@reddit
Not at all. I 40F walk on my own and I often see guys of different ages walking without people or pets.
BillyJoeDubuluw@reddit
I’m going to go out on a bit of limb here and say that this is more socially acceptable for females to do than men but it can also pose more potential dangers to females.
As others have said, choose a route that is reasonably popular with other walkers and not “too lonely” and try to avoid hours of the day where it might be a bit too isolated… I know that this might feel a bit contradictory because you want soltitude, but it’s something just to be mindful of.
Absolutely no reason for you to not go out for solo walks, but just have your faculties about you and an awareness of your surroundings.
UnIntelligent-Idea@reddit

I love walks on my own. 41m. Parks, beaches, hikes, you name it.
Never using headphones, take in all the sights and sounds and forget any idea of looking weird, go anc enjoy yourself.
Qyro@reddit
A literal non-issue. People walk in the woods alone all the time, myself included. No-one cares who's walking in the woods and whether they're alone or with someone or not.
BigPidgim@reddit
From one neurodivergent woman to another, it won't look weird.
I usually smile and say hello to passing walkers.
I feel like this goes without saying being a woman, but keep your wits about you as well
littleL37@reddit
Aw no try not to overthink it. I go walking alone all the time. I love the still of wooded areas so I get why you like it.
twofacetoo@reddit
Same, Autistic too. Personally I listen to audio-books while I'm out but strolling around on your own is no big deal
AffectionateTrash146@reddit
Nope I love a good solo woodsy walk. Don't have to follow someone else's path or wait on them. Just stroll, stroll, stroll.
Max1357913@reddit
Who would literally care? It wouldn’t look weird at all - plenty of people go on walks alone, and besides, if you were that worried - people might be thinking you’re going to meet someone else anyway!
mforsythh@reddit
Absolutely not. I go to the woods a lot alone. Sometimes with my camera, sometimes without. Sometimes a straight walk from start to finish, sometimes with many stops along the way to sit in a tree, on the banks of a river/loch, or just a nicely placed bench with a view. It’s what the wood trails are made for. Not just dog walkers! Enjoy the woods, they bring a great grounding feeling just being amongst them. The older the trees, the more the feeling for me.
seriousrikk@reddit
Not even slightly.
Go walk in the woods, they are great.
Also, you don’t need to worry about what others might think. You do you.
YouCantArgueWithThis@reddit
I usually walk alone. Also auti. I mean, it makes sense. We usually prefer being alone. It perfectly fine.
chaoticchemicals@reddit
Embrace the weird and don't give a fuck what anyone else thinks! Enjoy the wood.
murderino767@reddit
If you’d like a dog to walk look into cinnamon trust charity. You can volunteer to walk dogs for people who are sick or elderly.
Karla_Darktiger@reddit
No, I see people alone all the time and I never think anything of it
Working_Bowl@reddit
I always go for long walks on my own in the woods. I see lots of other solo walkers. I usually make sure I’ve got my podcast to listen to.
AnneThisaway@reddit
I walk in the woods by myself all the time. Just make sure you keep yourself safe x
AgileInitial5987@reddit
You’re allowed to do things alone 😌
WhaleOfDespair@reddit
I hope not because I do it all the time! No dog, massive headphones on, just chilling. I’m also autistic and I have ADHD and the green space and fresh air is better than anything for resetting my system. I see plenty of other lone walkers. I stick to the main paths just in case of wrong uns but otherwise it’s great.
LikeEveryoneSheKnows@reddit
I often go for a walk in our local forest alone. No one bats an eye, you'll be fine.
Psorosis@reddit
Do it. Take a small pair of binoculars and enjoy it.
Away-Activity-469@reddit
Before daybreak, midweek, with a rope?
Time-Caterpillar4103@reddit
No but make sure your going to woods that are well walked by others to make sure your safe. Also you could join a ramblers group and join group walks.
AvailableActuator111@reddit
27F autistic had a loverly woods walk today so go out there girl!
GarwayHFDS@reddit
I think this is mostly about your preconceptions of how people will feel. The majority of people won't give it a second thought, except to exchange hello's. They're mostly walking through the woods for the same reason you are.
Evening-Tomatillo-47@reddit
If you're on a path, no.
If you're literally walking through the woods, maybe
WorcsBloke@reddit
I'm a guy, but I walk through the woods where I live (North Worcestershire) all the time, and often on my own. Totally normal! Actually my own biggest nervousness is (poorly controlled) dogs, not other people. But yes, of it makes you feel better than absolutely go for it. :)
Formal-Proposal7850@reddit
Yes go forth and walk.
But if you really want a prop, I bet there’s an elderly or disabled person with a dog in your neighbourhood who would be thrilled if you grabbed their pooch for a forest walk once a week
Robertinho678@reddit
Nothing weird about that at all, very common :)
Connect-Bug9988@reddit
I love walking through the woods on my own, since my dogs sadly passed, and I'm not currently allowed one at my place right now.
I just chuck my headphones on with some relaxing music, folk or classical really fits wandering aimlessly in nature, when I pass by other people, I usually make a fuss of their dog, and chat for a while, if the dog makes the first move and comes over tail wagging, otherwise I just nod and say "morning" or "afternoon", smile and return to the peace and enjoyment of the solitude.
Just a polite acknowledgement of people as you pass, or a brief greeting will make you feel more at ease and comfortable with being on your own.
I get lost quite easily, and have the internal navigational compass of a toddler, so it's a good thing I enjoy wandering around, as I've been known to disappear for 8-10 hours right out into places 10-15 miles away from where I set off 🤣🤣🤣
Funny-Enthusiasm9786@reddit
If you're really worried, could you offer to walk a friend's dog? I understand that you're not ready for a new dog yet, but maybe you could borrow one.
Anyway, I agree with everyone else - as long as you don't walk there alone after dark, no one will think twice about someone walking on their own
soulsteela@reddit
The nature is good for the mental health of us all, enjoy it. I always have.
theroch_@reddit
I do that at night in darkness. I wouldn’t worry about it. Walk slow and you’ll be amazed at what wildlife you see
Outside_Macaron_941@reddit
I go for walks through the woods by myself all the time it’s peaceful just having your music and thoughts, trust me no one is going to think you look weird/strange, most people will think “she’s on a walk” and majority of people are too busy focusing on themselves anyway so really I wouldn’t worry
ljr69@reddit
Not at all. Nobody would give it a second thought. Go and enjoy your walk.
georgisaurusrekt@reddit
Nah you're female you'll be fine. It's worse for men lol when my dog passed away I decided to go on a walk and someone threatened to phone the police because they thought I was scouting out an area to rob it
SituationMundane5452@reddit
We live in a strange world. I was walking alone in the wood a few years ago, I came across a young girl (maybe 10-11 years old) she was alone and crying. I actually found myself afraid to approach her simply because I was alone and didn’t want to seem creepy.
Luckily the girls parents appeared from nowhere, she had lost sight of them and got upset.
It really upset me that we live in a world where I was afraid to help this girl.
Sad times
_FreddieLovesDelilah@reddit (OP)
Oh gosh that’s awful. I’m so sorry you were treated that way. I hate when people make judgements purely on someone’s gender :( I know men feel a lot of pressure as well to not appear threatening, you can blame the bad guys for that.
HarryBayles@reddit
Not at all.
Lunar_Raccoon@reddit
I regularly go walking on my own, and enjoy a stroll through my local woods. It’s great seeing other people using their open spaces and public footpaths! The only time people talk to me is when we exchange ‘hello’s’ or ‘afternoon’s’.
You’ll be fine!
katie-kaboom@reddit
Walking alone is one of the great joys of life., and it's completely normal to do. You'll be perfectly fine. It is normal to nod or say hello to someone you pass in the woods or on the trail, btw. You don't have to, but it won't be weird if you do.
sjw_7@reddit
Nope. You are just someone going for a walk. You will be no different from thousands and thousands of other people all over the country who will be doing exactly the same thing you are.
Go and enjoy your walk in the woods and don't worry about it.
anabsentfriend@reddit
My job involves me walking through a lot of weeds on my own. I also see a lot of other people on their own. In fact there are many more single walkers than groups or couples.
That aside. I wouldn't give a shot about looking weird. I do everything on my own. If I waited for someone else to join me I'd never do anything
Strong-Librarian-OOK@reddit
Not at all. You are just going for a walk. I go for a walk or run by myself every morning before I start work, and on my lunch hour. It’s not weird, you are just getting out of
SF_FFS@reddit
No but also, it’s none of their business. If someone thinks it’s weird, that’s their problem. It’s their feelings, their thoughts and it’s all about their experience of walking along and seeing someone else walking alone. It’s nothing to do with you, to them you’re just a random who they have decided to project their issues about walking alone onto. Do what you want. If someone thinks it’s weird, let them have their weird personal experiences about seeing ppl walking alone lol. Just know that it’s just that. They have no authority over what you are allowed to do.
Mrslinkydragon@reddit
Not at all.
Also, embrace the weird. Take a copy of the british bryological society's field guide and try iding the mosses in the woods :)
No_Medium_648@reddit
Autistic and totally get it. No one cares but you might still feel perceived. Do it anyway. X
BobDude65@reddit
I don’t think so. Used to have this worry myself, felt uncomfortable walking past people because I felt like I was making them uncomfortable. End of the day 99% of its in ur head, ur just another person enjoying the woods. Of course there will be some shallow, judgemental people out there but fuck em, it’s a public space and you’re as welcome to use it as anyone else.
Reasonable-Key9235@reddit
Nothing wrong with having a walk in the woods, one of my favourite things to do
SomeHSomeE@reddit
There are woodlands near my Mum's and I always go for solo walks and never felt weird about it. And see plenty others doing the same.
Resident-Gear2309@reddit
No, just make sure you tell someone where your going in case you have a fall or something
Kent_Doggy_Geezer@reddit
No, you’re fine honestly. Maybe you are thinking about that stuff a little bit more than you need to. It’s lovely that you’re considering other people’s thoughts about seeing you alone but you don’t need to worry. Plenty of people are using their local areas to recharge and relax. It’s great that you’re doing that! All I’d say is only have the music on low so you’re aware of your environment and don’t get mugged!!! (Obviously depends where you live!!!) Have a great spring and year ahead and take care.
Low_Stress_9180@reddit
Unless you wear a balaclava and carry a large knife, no.
gggggenegenie@reddit
Hey my friend. Walking down s one of the best escapes there is, especially so doing it on your own. I walk over 100k a week on my own. It's my space. Nobody bats an eyelid, so crack on and enjoy!
TaffWaffler@reddit
As I say to my friends “STOP PERCEIVING ME”. But no, plenty people use the woods to walk their pets, walk with family and friends, and a LOT of people walk in the woods alone. It’s definitely one of those situations of “no one is going to care. But if they are rude about it, they’re the weird one”
nebulousrealist@reddit
I walk through the woods on my own, during the day, with my over ear headphones on and it's a delight. I find that people walking in the woods, alone, with others or with dog, are generally friendly and will say morning / afternoon as they pass. I sometimes overthink that I won't notice if someone's said good day to me, hence the over ear headphones so that they know I'm not ignoring them.. that's just me though.
Sorry about your dog!
ShortDraft7510@reddit
They wont but if they did who gives a fuck. Go live your best life do what nakes you happy
4x6x8@reddit
Woods are incredible for sorting out the brain. Nothing wrong with walking in them by yourself. Sympathies on the loss of your pooch.
wonder181016@reddit
Nope. I've done this myself (I'm a32M, also autistic)
DarkStanley@reddit
Nobody will care go out and enjoy it.
FakeBotSimp@reddit
No that’s absolutely normal
Current_Thing2244@reddit
Nobody would care, at all. Plenty of people walk through the woods solo, all over Britain and I assume NI too. Just keep your wits about you and enjoy the peace.
tiorzol@reddit
Nah not weird at all but if you're not comfortable then it's not going to have the same affect. I walk through the woods in Bromley with my boy all the time I know it's an incredibly long shot but if you're ever in that area we'd love to walk with you. Or like just be near if that's better.
Sorry if that's weird I'm running on no sleep today.
closouted99@reddit
My hobby is putting on a cute but practical outfit and some good music and going on a walk through the woods
OutrageousRhubarb853@reddit
You will be fine. If I’ve learned one thing as I’ve grown older and wiser, it’s that the woods are not full of scary people. The woods are never full of people, and the ones you may see on your adventures are nice and polite. You will find scarier in the city than in the woods.
Enjoy the fresh air and exercise! My wife is autistic and I can sympathise with your struggle in this.
Bipolar03@reddit
No. I think it's weird when tons of people go together. It's not a family outing
MisterD90x@reddit
people walk in the wood on their own all the time, i do it too, i like to put on an audiobook and go for a bit of a walk.
its not odd and no one will judge you, also you get to see lots of dogs and get to pet them :D
Past-Anything9789@reddit
No, I think that walking outside for mental health is much more acceptable since the pandemic.I used to walk my parents dogs in the forest a lot in my 20's and saw lots of people out alone.
There were a few people over the years who 'set off' my instinct, but having 2 huge dogs made it highly unlikely to be an issue.
I would say having your location on, letting someone know where you're going and when to expect you back is infinitely more importantly if you are planning on going alone. Also walking with earbuds in can also make it easier to be caught off guard, so keep the level low enough that you hear some ambient noise over what you're listening too.
Enjoy your walks and stay safe x
BrightSide0fLife@reddit
Take Tick precautions to avoid being bitten by a Tick. Some boots or your trousers tucked into your socks to help prevent Ticks biting you. It's just inside Tick season now and the warmer weather will make them bread faster.
You really don't want a Lyme disease infection. Have a brush ready when you get home to brush your clothes over, especially the ones nearer your feet when your outside your home. You don't want those nasty little bugs in your home..... Be aware of other people with that earphone for your safety reasons.
Enjoy your peace. BTW have you ever investigated self hypnosis? I don't know how well it would work with Autism but might be worth investigating especially if you can go to a Hypnotherapist and have them set up a very deep trance so that you can instantly enter a trance when you want to.
lost-in-midgard@reddit
Absolutely not. I walk in the woods on my own all the time and often see other solo wanderers. The Woods are for everyone. ♥️
Subject-Turnip-77@reddit
Maybe take a dog lead out with you implying that you have a dog around but in the bushes, trees etc.
pigsonthewing@reddit
Not in the least weird. But if it really bothers you, maybe you could offer to walk a friend or neighbour's dog?
KingKhram@reddit
You wouldn't look weird, it's a very normal thing to do. There's even a sub dedicated to it r/walking and it's community is great
TrifectaOfSquish@reddit
No plenty of people go for a walk on their own
Timely_Egg_6827@reddit
I do it fairly often - nice woods between my work and dentist so destress walking through them. We do have pets but don't always have them with you. People will just assume you are out for your exercise and pleasure.
Distinct-Lion4658@reddit
I go on walks by myself on purpose because it's the most peace and quiet I get in my day to day life. I do pretty much everything solo and it feels normal to me now
Comfortable-Pear-973@reddit
No one is thinking about you as much as you think they are, I promise! Go have a nice walk and enjoy the spring air ❤️
Healthy_Pilot_6358@reddit
Nah, I’m going the woods in a minute with my dog. Was there yesterday too. There are plenty of people out in their own. Enjoy your time and think about your dog
Aromatic_Tourist4676@reddit
Not at all, I do it all the time. It Makes you feel great, you deserve to feel good, get out there 👉
Opening_Effective_18@reddit
If you’re struggling due to feeling the need to have a “purpose” to your walk, you could investigate some woodland hobbies? Foraging, flower picking, bug/plant/fungi photography. If you’re into art you could take photos and use them as a reference at home?
MelibuBerbie@reddit
Not at all, I do this all the time. Many people walk for exercise.
Bonzos_Bowler_Hat@reddit
All I do is go walks by myself. No one would bat an eyelid.
No-Ask-3213@reddit
Take binoculars and look like you’re looking for birds. Maybe even actually look at birds?
DogtasticLife@reddit
I’m a dog walker so I’m in the woods all the time and I see plenty of lone walkers without dogs
Horseshoe-Bay@reddit
Nobody would think it weird to walk through a wood alone. I have a dog but I love Coombes Valley wood in Staffordshire, a hidden gem. I walk there alone because it’s an RSPB wood and dogs are banned. Walking through peaceful woodland is fantastic at any time of year.
Defiant-Table-9131@reddit
No-one will think anything of it, I used to walk through the woods when I went to a friend's house as it was the quickest route home.
DaveL16@reddit
Not weird at all. But there’s always borrowmydoggy.com if you fancy a companion.
AlbusBulbasaur@reddit
Do you look weird normally?
spoo4brains@reddit
Not weird at all, get out there and enjoy the lovely spring nature.
beernon@reddit
I do this all the time. I get a bit self-conscious about it before I leave the house but once I’m in nature I don’t care. Half of the people I pass tend to be by themselves to.
thowmeawayandforget@reddit
Not weird at all but be careful for your own safety.
