"White Turks" are basically the turkish equivalent of urban liberals, educated professionals, and old-money or new-money city elites. Not necessarily rich, but usually associated with secularism, higher education, and a western lifestyle. I am the guy that erdo hates.

As a country, we use words whose meanings we don’t even know. We pray in a language we don’t understand and we live on lands whose meaning we still can’t fully grasp. Welcome to Turkey.

why do you call it peinirli? we got it from india (paneer) and peynirli means with cheese (feta-beyaz peynir). tulumba means pump, means sweet made with a pump. bakla means inverse-square, due to its shape. -va means sweet like tulumba, baklava etc. But kokoreç is 100% a balkan thing. But we make it without internal organs. I am sure yours is tastier than ours. Other than that, there famous thing called cacık. you guys can not pronounce -c (dch) and ç (ch), you got -ts and -tz thus cacık cant be greek. Buuut tzatziki (caciki :P ) is tastier than cacık and we call it ''kuru cacık'' (dry tzatziki). At the and of the day they are same shit different vernacular. I am from İstanbul and i love greek and armenian culture. It is a real shame that we had to seperate us. I would rather live together with greeks and armenians than with arabs and kurds. But history is history. What a shame.

In Greece, it’s a tradition for spectators to kneel and clap along to certain popular dances. Is this a thing in your country as well? Where spectators or fellow dancers perform a similar ritual of kneeling or rhythmic clapping around to honor a performer?

Do you consider Portugal part of the Balkans?

Radiant_Put_3609@reddit

Yeah, I’ve heard about that debate 😄 So in Bosnia “burek = only meat” and everything else gets its own name like sirnica, zeljanica, etc. It’s basically a local classification thing, not a linguistic rule. From a broader perspective though (Turkey, the rest of the Balkans, Middle East), “börek/burek” is just the umbrella term for the whole family of layered pastry dishes with different fillings. So yeah, if you say “cheese burek” in Sarajevo, you might get a correction session you didn’t sign up for 😄 but outside that context it’s totally understandable. At the end of the day, it’s one of those food identity debates people love way too much for no reason.

June 16, 2013. Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, at the “Respect for the National Will” rally in Kazlıçeßme, Istanbul, calls for a campaign encouraging people to hang Turkish flags in their windows. Even though he says “Istanbul, hear my voice,” his voice is answered in Dursunbey, a district of Balıkesir, which later confirms its loyalty to the AK Party with 78% of the vote in the November 1 elections. Who could have known that in that district, a balcony, a man in a striped T-shirt standing on it, and even the white plastic chair in the corner would, three years later, become accessories of our happy memories.

In Turkey, selling e-cigarette devices is illegal. But they can be very easily obtained through illegal channels. There’s no issue if you bring one from abroad for personal use. Disposable devices? They’re sold pretty much everywhere. Most likely, someone with connections in the government—probably aligned with the party—is handling the import of these disposable devices.

The Turkish state doesn’t really take the public’s opinion into account much in matters like this. Action is taken first, and then it’s explained to the people afterward. That’s how things work here.

Radiant_Put_3609@reddit

Well, no i am not a bot. But, you are mixing two different levels again. A governments action is a single, official decision. Public opinion is fragmented, debated, and often divided. In Turkey, just like in any country, there were people who supported the intervention, people who opposed it, and people who were indifferent. There was no single, uniform “majority mindset” that you can point to as identical to the government’s exact decision in timing, scale, or method. Elections don’t capture that level of detail. They give a mandate to govern, not a step-by-step approval of every foreign policy action. So the difference is simple: the government acts as one voice, the population never does.
