I thought this is a balkan thing
Darth-Vectivus@reddit
This is Erdoğan’s Turkey. People are so impoverished that any promise of free food causes stampedes. We are back in the 90s again.
Immediate-Ad-7169@reddit
This festival has been organized for more than 400 years. it has nothing to do with Erdoğan.
Glittering_Curve1321@reddit
Nah man, these people are just retarded. Its not even real food they are giving. If it was a line for bread or soup I would understand but this is just so stupid. They do this shit with baklava too. Just tell Turkish people something is free, there is going to be a stempede for sure.
rilinq@reddit
There are plenty things wrong with erdogan but this ain’t it.
PeriodontosisSam@reddit
It was always the same. Thats nothing new
SageGoes@reddit
We had same jokes in Russia 10 years ago. It's not funny anymore 😔

Hello neighbour. What’s your opinion on turkey for the last years ? What do you think about erdogan

Substratas@reddit (OP)
Baba?!
ArthurScherbius@reddit
I never thought id have to translate the word “baba” on a balkan sub :(
Mestintrela@reddit
It means father in greek.
Friendly_Scholar_782@reddit
But you say it like, "Babas", right?
baxulax@reddit
Yeah, but we have «μπάμπω» (babo) (old hag) too
Mestintrela@reddit
Is this some region dialect? Because we certainly dont have this word where I come from. If you said it to me I wouldnt know what it meant.
Several_Score_4278@reddit
I thought he was Semitic, but it might even be Chinese
baxulax@reddit
It surely is regional. I think maybe Peloponnes or Thessaly? I am from Macedonia and we hadn’t it as well, but I have heard it many times in my life. It’s widespread. How did you not know it? Μπαμπόγρια; don’t ring a bell?
Mestintrela@reddit
I know μπαμπόγρια though it is extremely rare. The others really, wouldnt know what they meant if I heard them.
baxulax@reddit
It’s the same word
Capable_Studio_6631@reddit
In Bulgarian Babo is used to address your own grandma or another closely related old woman who wouldn't otherwise take offense to it.
baxulax@reddit
I think it was the same originally in Greek as well. But it shifted a little over the centuries
Barbak86@reddit
In Albanian as well.
playforreal@reddit
Albabian :D Sorry, couldn't resist :P
UnknownOrigin1152@reddit
It means father in Turkish too

Substratas@reddit (OP)
Same in Albanian. That’s why I’m confused.
Mysterious_Pack3598@reddit
It's kinda fun how in Romanian babă is old woman but 'babacu' is a somewhat regional/slangy way of saying father
Professional-Fee-488@reddit
It's the same in Chinese, 爸爸, coincidentally......?
CockamouseGoesWee@reddit
Well yeah but this is a Turkish video so it's obviously not a baba it's a baba
AEtherLord_@reddit
Bless you same meaning in Turkish. Now should we argue who started using it first :-p?
NoEatBatman@reddit
True, heck even the Japanese get it
Educational_Term_463@reddit
Baba is you
GoodMoney888@reddit

Putrid_Speed_5138@reddit
Now this may sound strange, but this video shows apparently pious Muslim women and 60+ bald men crushing each other for free candy that is spicy, allegedly aphrodisiac, and distributed in what can be described as a full-contact gangbang of elbows and handbags in a performative religious orgy of pensioner reflexes.
The anthropological brilliance of watching basic human survival instincts activate under a shower of airborne herbal libido-boosters is unmatched. One may still question their effectiveness, however, as Turkey continues hurtling toward a demographic crisis as fertility rates keep plummeting.
chrstianelson@reddit
The comments in the original post are actually damn funny but Reddit auto-translate is absolutely clueless.
One comment says "if they see a free dick, they would jump on it" which Reddit's AI translates as "if they see an easy target, they will jump on it".

Free gift of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesir_macunu .
gounatos@reddit
Like a kilo or is it insanely expensive?
Several_Score_4278@reddit
They’re throwing things at people. What do they expect to happen?
Few-Interview-1996@reddit
I don't think they would each be getting a kilo of the thrown sweets (see the photo). It's not insanely expensive, just absolutely, ridiculously tedious and also not easy to make.
gounatos@reddit
Ah thanks for the photo, google also had some jars when googling the name and I couldn't understand what they were stampeding for. I was expecting somekind of loqum and it looks like toffee but who am I to judge.
Commercial_Law_1689@reddit
Well... it is certainly not toffee lol. It's a paste made from 41 spices and herbs mixed with honey, sugar, gum mastic and citrus peel. It is densely packed with calories.
Emotional-Account182@reddit
its expensive

Significant-Ad-7182@reddit
They were distrubuting some kind of free candy that is really expensive so these people swarmed them.
I don't know why these guys in particular lost all decorum and self respect though.
For example lokma/lokmaki is given away for free in many places in Turkey especially in the Aegean side as a form of charity but people are respectful about it.
