Yes.
His father is from Kocacık, a very small village in Macedonia-Albania borders.
Many people claimed that Atatürk came from the Balkan Turks, however, according to the 15th century official records of Kocacık where his father was born, population was mostly slavic-albanian.
Atatürk was mostly an ethnic (Turkified) Albanian-Slav from his father's side.
Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s paternal ancestors were of Oghuz Turkish descent. They were **Yörük (nomadic Turkmen) tribes** who migrated from the Aydın/Söke and Konya/Karaman regions in Anatolia. They were settled in the Balkans (Rumelia) during the 14th and 15th centuries as part of the Ottoman state's Turkification policies
Guess what? I am from a Bulgarian town comprised of only Turks and our history along with the towns next to us say that we were Yöruks that came from the Konya region (maybe Karagöz yöruks). My family on my dad’s side has Blue eyes and blond hair. The males on my grandfathers side all have ginger beards including me and my brother.
I did a dna test and guess what, genetically I am closer to Romanians and Bulgarians than to any Turk. Yes I have central asian DNA and Anatolian, but never the less it’s more slavic than anything else.
100% Ataturk was a similar Balkan Turk who was majority Slavic or other Balkan. People converted from Christianity to Islam and they married the Turcomans that migrated there.
DNA testing companies don't have a specific category for Balkan Turks. If they did, you would see Turks in the results rather than Slavs. The DNA of Balkan Turks is not the same as that of other Balkan populations, it is different and has its own distinct characteristics. Just as the fact that an Altai Turk may be genetically closer to Mongols does not make them Mongolian, being genetically closer to Romanians does not make you Romanian or Bulgarian
Just as that doesn’t make me Turkish either by the same logic. I have components from all of them. The Turkish ones are washed out because for the same reason we don’t look like Central Asians anymore… mixed with others. Turks from Turkey are a result of central asians mixing with local Anatolian peoples that lived there…. But genetically i am not close to Turks with Turkey.
Illustrative DNA does actually have a Balkan Turk category when showing closest population. I am closest to Deliorman Turks (where i’m from) Second closest is Kirzhali Turks (also Bulgarian Turks) and third is Romanian and fourth is Gagauz. Next are Bulgarian Pomak and Bulgarian proper.
I see slavs in the results because the makeup of Balkan Turks is majority slavic, anything else is cope.
Bro is coping very very hard. Generally Turks love coping because they have many reasons to be insecure. I’m sorry for attacking your fellow people, that are not even your fellow people as it seems like. They ask for it. Balkan Turks that have received different education seem to be much more intelligent than the Anatolian Turks.
Regarding the categories, it’s very interesting how the first two are Bulgarian Turks you’re closer at and then the third is Romanian. Do these two groups have higher Slavic than the average Bulgarian? It seems like it, since the Romanians are the third closest and Bulgarians come later.
Coping?
The average Deliorman Turk carries about 6% East Eurasian ancestry, which is similar to that of Azerbaijani Turks. Some Deliorman Turks can reach levels as high as 13%.
Southern Bulgaria Turks carry around 8% East Eurasian ancestry.
For comparison, this percentage is essentially 0% among Bulgarians and Romanians.
Average Turkish person carries around %10 but its more correct so say between %5-%15
Average Early Ottoman Turk(1300-1500) carried %13 East Eurasian and range between %5-%25
They are definitely Turk genetically and culturally
if u take an Deliorman Turk and compare his result with ancient samples U will see that closest samples are Avar Turks of Europe and Turk Danube Bolgars
Very wrong, Early Ottoman Turks are closer to Modern Turkish people

Actually if you take a deliorman turk you get closest ancient population to early magyar carpathian basin and the next closest population is medieval danubian bulgar and third is balkan slav
Yeah Deliorman Turks are genetically closer to the Avar Turks and the Danubian Bulgar Turks

These are the new published samples, probably ur dna company didnt update or doesnt use many of these samples.
And Bulgar in this list doesnt represent modern Bulgarians, Those samples have around %10 East Eurasian admixture They represent the Turkic Bulgars that migrated to Bulgaria from Pontic Steppe

Turks from Turkey aren’t even in the top 10 for closest Bulgar sample…. idk why you are still debating this
This is the sample illustrativeDna uses...

I know who they are… i’ve seen their historical sites and read about them. They were not oghuz turks in the first place and second place they lived in regions that had a huge slavic presence.
No one said They are Oghuz and Yes those samples are belongs to Turkic Bulgars, also genetically closer to Balkan and Anatolian Turks, Their East Eurasian percentage similar to Anatolian Turks and Higher than Balkan Turks
Thats why historians and Linguists seperate Bulgars and Bulgarians differently, They are different people

No, they are not close to Anatolian Turks… at all
its only 1 sample from Samovedene with clearly %10 East Asian/Siberian admixture, We are talking about New published Bolgar samples, some samples are closer to Anatolian and Ottoman Turks. I can send them on Dm

In places like Antalya, there are both brunette and blonde Yöruk people. These people have no connection to the Balkans whatsoever. These types of people lead relatively isolated lives.
My point wasn’t about being blonde or blue eyed. It was about the likely hood of Atatürk being more in common genetically with slav or other balkan group than your typical yöruk from Turkey.
The man in the photo I shared doesn't have a very different phenotype from Atatürk. We can also see photos of Atatürk's father and mother. His parents are the kind you could find on any streets of westernTurkey Did you only live in the Balkans?
Phenotype doesn’t equal genetics… That’s why many people in Afghanistan or Pakistan can have blond people too…
He has the same ancestral history that all Balkans Turks have…
I am literally in Istanbul right now and the amount of times people tell me i don’t look like a turk i would be rich right now…
You're the one constantly talking about phenotypes. I'm not interested in what you look like or your personal stories. You're an anonymous person here.
Ok since there is a clear misunderstanding here let me recap for you… i said the point about my post is genetically he is most likely no different from other balkan turks and isn’t about his looks and you literally continued to state his phenotype again…
My initial post regarding my own looks wasn’t the point.. i just wanted to make it clear that these features are VERY common amongst balkan turks and since half my family lives in a Turkey and i’ve travelled all around it…. i wouldn’t say blonde and blue eyed people are common… yes they exist… but anyway none of this even the point. The point was genetics…..
We should normally evaluate this based on the company you used for your DNA test (for example, if it’s MyHeritage, the results regarding Turkish ancestry percentage is 100% incorrect). But considering what you said, you can’t expect 100% pure blood from a people who were first nomads and later founded an empire; however, I must also point out that the Western Turks were not a people with black eyes and black hair to begin with. There will inevitably be people who married into other groups and created mixed bloodlines with different nations. This is part of human nature. Until relatively recently, people didn’t specifically focus on ethnicity; they looked at religion, traditions, and other customs.
The issue here is the misinformation provided about Atatürk’s paternal Turkish lineage, and in another comment, I presented my objections to this using sources.
I tested with four separate companies; 23&Me, Ancestrdna, family tree dna and illustrative dna. They are all very similar to one another except for their categorization of regions (23 and me uses balkan and greek to explain slavs and greeks)
Kudos to you for taking the time to verify with different companies. Most people usually just trust a single company.
Still, as I said, the issue here is the distortion of a different event to misrepresent the origins of an important figure. In Turkey, those who do this are generally individuals who are hostile to Turks and the Republic.
There is no evidence that shows the village of Kocacık received a Turkic migration from Anatolia. Only thing we know that in 15th century they were non-Muslim.
It was impossible to send Turkic settlers to Kocacık in the first place because it is a deserted are and there are less than 10 families in that village. It was surely waaay smaller when Anatolian migrations to the Balkans happened.
So no, this is probably just cope, people trying to connect his ancestry to Turkicness but the possibility is very low.
For the side of his mother, it is true, his mother comes from Karamanoğulları, we know that for sure because her mother's family was famous even before Atatürk was born (for having Islamic scholars) and they have their own family tree. Which is not the case for Atatürk's father.
https://preview.redd.it/j33wbsh7825h1.jpeg?width=2339&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=503736ef77e36cf0e3f84bd5b8432a1984aac8e0
Taken from historian Tayyip Gökbilgin's "Rumeli'de Yürükler, Tatarlar ve Evlad-ı Fatihan" academic research book. Showing the locations of the Naldöken, Tanrıdağ, Selanik, Vize, Ofcabolu, and Kocacık Yörük tribes, as well as the Aktav, Tırhala, Bozapa, and Yanbolu Tatars in Rumelia.
There are also different registeries and researches like Kenan İnanbaşı's Studies on the Rumeli Yörüks and Fortress Registries which later used for Yoruk Organizations, Roots and Features in Ottoman Rumeli paper. Which clearly indicates Yoruk Ocaks in these regions. Especially in Kocacık.
Yusuf Alaçoğlu’s six-volume series \*Tribes, Communities, and Clans in Anatolia\* includes quite comprehensive sections discussing the Yörük people, community groups, and the regions to which the Ottomans resettled the Turks. Kocacık is also included in this series.
Once the Ottomans had captured Svetigrad(Kocacık) Fortress, what else could they have done but settle Turks there and in the surrounding area? It was a place of immense strategic importance. Not a deserted village area... Saying there’s no evidence when there are dozens of sources shows what kind of person you are.
Turks were never settled there it’s never recorded your historians had to make it up to make ataturk more turk, the ottomans themselves recorded that village as being mixed albanian-Slavic character no Turkic settlers ever recorded. The locals converted to Muslim and adopted Turkish identity.
I would appreciate it if you could avoid making assessments based on sources like Wikipedia that contain biased or incomplete information.
Since you don’t trust Turkish historians, you can check other foreign historians like Michael Kiel who worked on these regions. Since I prefer not to offer my own opinion because of your comment, I asked Gemini to provide names of impartial Western historians who have researched Kocacık. Along with Kiel, AI mentioned figures such as Galaba Palikruševa, Aleksandar Stojanovski, Metodija Sokoloski, Afanasy Selishchev, and Hadži Vasiljević.
There is no evidence that they were "Turkified" either. That's just a theory you made up. According to historians and official state Institution sources, the only thing we know is that Atatürk's father side ancestors were Turks who migrated from Anatolia. Anything beyond that is unsupported by evidence and remains nothing more than a theory

No one makes any claims. He has ancestry from the Karaman region of Anatolia (Yoruks/Turkmens), as his family lineage was recorded in Ottoman chronicles. The Balkan Turks have much cleaner family records than many Turks living in the Anatolian Peninsula.
Yeah and there’s no settlements there recorded at all, the albo-Slav inhabitants were turkified early during skanderbegs rebellion as kocacik is where they believe svetigrad was.
Tf you talking about, why you gotta connect everyone to some turkic roots enver pasha was albanian. He was literally appointed by the Young turks to gather troops in albania because he was albanian himself lmao.
Brother why you get butthurt for nothing.
I know after the ataturks revolution turkish people need to make everything be turkic to conform the nationalistic idea that ataturk sowed in turkey. But that was a different time, the time of the ottoman empire he was an albanian through and through and everytime the ottomans had problems with albanians he was sent to pacify stuff between albanians and the ottoman government and he even used albanian irregulars to dethrone abdulhamid at the end of the day he was an ottomanist and only used his heritage to gather support in Albania not like we know him to be sort of a good figure for our country, but this is just bullshit nationalistic propaganda to make everybody turkic even when he’s clearly albanian you gotta make up some stupid stuff like his mother was tatar to link him to some mystic turkic roots lmao 🤣

The Ottomans kept population and census records and we still have access to many of them today. You know that, right? Turkish historians have researched his family tree and official state institutions state that both his paternal and maternal ancestry trace back to Turks who came from the Karaman region. His father is said to have been of Kızıl(Red) Oghuz Turk origin. Also Atatürk’s sister stated in a speech that they constantly heard from their mother that their family was of Yörük Turk origin
I believe his family was actually of Balkan Yörüks. My family was actually from same village and my mom's family is also Yörük, and she scores a bit high Central Asian on dna

Awesome info, thank you! I didn't know much about him except for what they teach us in schools, mostly vague informations like "he was the first president of the modern republic of Turkyie, and that the airport has his name. We know much more about the ottomans than we know about modern turks. 😄

That feeling when you confidently came to restore Byzantium with your arms yet your mom ends up searching for your burnt, decapitated corpse in the beaches of your island:
When I send this meme. I was mocking the Palikarias who came to our coasts, saying "Excuse me sir, my ancestors lived here before, so I'm gonna take this land" like the Israelis, then ended up floating in the Aegean sea like dead fish while trying to take land.
I'm sorry for the civilians who lost their lives.
When Greeks stop Turks from killing Greek civilians , Greeks bad.
When Turks stop Greeks from killing Turk civilians , Turks good.
Yeah ok m8. You are not sorry for the civilians who lost their lives.
If you were , you wouldn't be a nationalist bozo with Ataturk Fan Club premium membership.
Oh, by the way, guess who settles illegaly in an ocupational zone as of 2026 just like the Israelis do in West Bank, Golan , Gaza ?
Turkey does. You are the israelis here m8.
Yes. Those Greek soldiers that arrived İzmir in 1919 and then marched toward Kütahya got what they deserved and I'm very proud of my ancestors who took care of them. They learnt a lesson, I wish I was there to take care one of them too.
However, I'm sorry for the civilians who had nothing to do with this who didn't want to take land from our borders and were just minding their own business.
Civilians and Soldiers with arms are 2 different category.
i never understand the hate against ataturk in greece btw. kemalists in turkey is not an expansionist like you idiots think. he is not an expansionist himself too. he backed off for all the time and prevent death. most sane, rational and best for the region ideology.
Yeah bro he was an angel to earth, he didn't do anything wrong. Kemalists are not expansionist at all. Let's forget the Cyprus invasion part. Let's forget the part where he helped finish off the Genocide of the Greeks of Pontus. Let's forget the part that in an interview a Greek carpenter that worked in Kemal's house said Kemal told him "Αnd those of you who remained alive are many, nobody should have left from here you should have been massacred. Nobody should have been left alive."
It is understandable for Greeks to hate them. There's no objective morality among humans. There are national interests.
The only reason that Greece couldn't seize the Western Coasts of Turkey is Atatürk, if they could, Greece really could have been something like Austria today in terms of economics.
"My ancestors lived here before yours mongol. Now I'm taking this land and I'll establish the great Greek State!"

Nobody alive today would fit those full plate mails in the museums, height only increased worldwide during 20th century after good and balanced nutrition became a thing.
I don't know.... I joke with my grandpa that he is short though his height was a result of the famine during ww2. You can call me tall queen🥀 because compared to women back then I have man height, I don't care. It has nothing to do with tiktok, I don't even have it
Yeah, it might be it. It would be more comparable to call every girl above very thin "fat queens" because the average weight has gone up among women compared to what was standard back in the day. Not that they are fat, or short, but because social media dictates that what they should be called.
"Tall queen" is a beautiful term, and one actually thinks of a beautiful queen while short king is more of an insult. I am using "tik-tok" as a reference to todays standards which by and large comes from general social media. You don't compare your height or body to your neighbor anymore but to the whole world.
you can call me fat queen too, I don't mind, it is banter, not a serious cinversation or statement I made. 173 compared to my male neighbors is also short, it was light hearted
Well, you sure du seem casual. and I perhaps corrupt, but we are both apparently philosophers and this is of course banter. That said, I don't think everyone is as chill being called fat queen just as most short guys is offended by short king. Anyway, greek tall fat queens are great.
I mean people that say it seriously is different to banter always.... it is different to say it to deminish people, whether you say short, fat, giant, skinny, anything. Men have straight up 0 concept how much women weigh also.... you would be surprised how some think anything above 60kgs is fat.....
name twiiiiins✨✨✨
Yes, I agree. But it is hard to differentiate insults and banter on social media. Should I call you a fat queen, you have no idea if it is banter or if I am trying to diminish you, especially if it is in text. Yes, men are terrible at weight. I would say its the same problem, social media has made men think anything above 60 kg is fat, and made women think that men shorter than 180 is short kings.
I mean to me any man shorter than me seems short. I don't think lower than 180 is short short but it is also not tall, especially since most 20 somethings are around 180. I you say fat queen with sparkles I would see the banter nature of it
No woman thinks men under 180 are short, like where are you people getting this from 🤣 also how would it be an insult if we're literally calling him a "short king" ... Also short is relevant, back home in north Macedonia I'm tall'ish at 184, but when ive been to Montenegro,Serbia and Bosnia I was average and when I'm around my cousins who are 195 I get called short 🤣
It would be an insult the same way someone would call someone a "fat king" or "ugly queen". "I'm still calling you a queen lolz, just ugly". It might be factual but being called short isn't a compliment to men, and is often a sore spot, especially for those who are short. Saying someone is short is more often than not used in a demeaning manner. I guess your buddies in Bosnia isn't saying you are short in order to elevate you or make you feel better, instead just stating fact or making a joke.
Its great you won't find men under 180 short, and I guess you haven't been to social media much. But if your friends calls you at 184 short, it is probably more common than you think that women think that men under 180 are short. Image someone at 173 around your friends.
Buddy fat and ugly are by default insults ... short is not a default insult, no they call me short cause its funny, me and my other cousin being the smallest of the family at 184 compared to everyone else ...
Back then it was average, nowadays we eat more and have better health care that improve our growth
Back then you probably would called "big like a bear" in your village If you were 175cm
Most the height in my family comes from my great great grandma from Montenegro apperantly she was almost 2m tall 🤣 there was a tradition where the man had to out drink the wife ... Long story short my great great grandma out drunk my great great grandpa and his 2 friends ... And all her kids had the genes, but because of famines didn't grow so all of a sudden after WW2 those genes from Montenegro started kicking in 🤣
Yep, average for his time, but he's a short king in modern times, also he was kind of skinny, I've stood next to his life sized wax figure and came to the realization that he did not visit his grandma alot because he was very malnourished 😅
I mean he wasn’t that short. I’d say totally average height in early 1900s.
https://preview.redd.it/rdph2nlv425h1.jpeg?width=645&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=1afd205c77b879494a283a9294fc2bc98cef3e9e
Mocking people’s appearances because they are old and deadly sick is a miserable behavior. Both of pictures are his, top one is young and bottom one is old and sick, he died soon after that picture were taken. But ofc Greeks doesnt have this fundamental common sense
Lol that picture was taken when he was heavily sick and could barely walk. Also he suffered permanent eye damage during his time in Libya due to shrapnel hitting his eye. That’s him in Libya in the OC.
I don't have ancestors who fought in the Greco-Turkish Wars.
However, I have ancestors who fought in the 1911–1912 Italo-Turkish War, does that count? Can I claim his eye for myself?
It's funny you mention the 1911 Italo-Turkish War. Despite having superior technology, your ancestors got completely bogged down in Libya by a handful of Turkish officers and local tribes led by Atatürk. He got that shrapnel injury in the battle of Derna while successfully stopping your troops. So no, you can't claim his eye. His scarred eye saw your ancestors halt in fear, and the history books show who actually won the strategic and moral victory there before you had to rely on diplomacy
Did your grandfathers accidentally drop their brains into the sea while swimming away from İzmir or is this your first time seeing a black and white photo?
I don't have ancestors who fought in the Greco-Turkish Wars.
However, I have ancestors who fought in the 1911–1912 Italo-Turkish War, does that count? Can I claim Atata's eye for myself?
That actually makes a lot of sense your ancestors in particular probably didn't even try fighting back after living under the boots of the Ottomans for almost half a millenia.
Can I also go ahead and claim Constantinople, your greatest city? Wait no that's already ours I wanna claim Rome ✌
When the fate of an entire nation rests on your shoulders, it’s no surprise that you may end up looking like the man in the second photo later in life. A youth spent in mountains, deserts, and plains, surrounded by conflict and war the stress and burdens of leadership the alcohol and cigarettes used in rare moments of relief and finally, the shrapnel wound that left one of his eyes with a noticeable gaze defect. There is nothing to be ashamed of in that.
Because we know Atatürk’s life, the sacrifices he made, and the hardships he endured for his nation, he appears admirable and handsome in every photograph not because of flawless features, but because of the strength of character and determination behind them.
You’re like a bar of soap nobody can hold onto you. The moment someone tries, you just slip and slide in every direction. Being this spineless and slippery suits you perfectly.
You mean those Central Asian males which contributed only 13 percent exercised 1,2,3,4 hundreds of years over Greek women or what? Wait it is even more..
Brother lost his lips, one eye and his nose became twice the size due to alcoholism...
May Vahdeddin forgive him and allow him to enter Jannah brother.
he was smart and great leader in iran our reza shah also was friend with him and he tried to do the changes to iran after his meeting with ataturk but sadly the changes in iran didnt endedup like turkey 💔
He looks so, so Balkan. Like almost archetypically. Especially the second picture, he could be Greek, Albanian, South Slavic, Romanian, Aromanian...but very much a highlander vibe around him. Especially with the sheep hat
You forgot to attach the gigachad.

Actually, it's neither Cretan nor Gokturk. It was the fashion of the Prussian military in the late 19th century.
While Atatürk didn't really like the Germans so much, he was from an Ottoman military school that had adopted the Prussian way. Hence the "Kaiser moustache".
This type of moustache went out of fashion in around 1910s. Germans switched to the toothbrush moustache but Atatürk didn't adopt it and instead went with his own style for around 20 years.
In his last years, he completely ditched the moustache and preferred a clean shave.

In 1914, right after the Balkan Wars, Atatürk attended a costume ball in Sofia hosted by the Bulgarians... dressed as a full Ottoman Janissary, complete with an authentic uniform shipped from Istanbul’s military museum.
Imagine throwing a victory party for the empire you just defeated and one of their officers shows up like this.
Turks absolutely love Atatürk. Because he managed to secularise Turkey and remove Islam for a long time in that country. Kemalists usually dislike Islam and that’s one of the reasons they don’t like Erdogan and AKP.
1. Aya sofia was a church when he turned it into a museum.
2. He didn't destroy mosques who told you that 😭
3. The only reason some clerics were executed was because they tried revolt agaisnt us with the help of brits.
4. The alphabet reform was mainly about literacy and modernization, not destroying Islam.
That is simply not, about %98 of the population were muslim at that time

You have little knowledge about current situation of Turkey.
In 2026, even most conservative Muslims respect Atatürk and his framework is accepted by most of the Muslims too.
A Turk told me that you can’t be a true Kemalist if you don’t reject Islam and other religions. Turkey’s society is extremely polarised. Kemalists and Conservative Muslims don’t like each other and often clash on the street.
Radical "Kemalists" say so, but atheism is not a prerequisite for laicism.
Mustafa Kemal had no problems with religion, he just hated people being deceived and manipulated under the guise of religion.
Ataturk wanted to eradicate Islam completely from Turkey but couldn’t. He temporarily eradicated it. But with the AKP it came back. Ataturk did the maximum he could to remove Islam. Turn the Aya Sofia into a museum, destroy mosques, murder clerics, outlawing arabic script and islamic clothing etc
I never said that but I'm saying it right now, there are so many wrongs in one comment that I just don't want to spend my time listing facts to someone who's not going to change his mind.
If he wanted to remove Islam he would not make sure that Qur'an is translated to Turkish.
those people are Reddit Turks that barely exist in irl or get beaten up if they dare to speak in public.
[https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwxVgI\_\_eu4](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fwxVgI__eu4) this is Konya where 90% of people are hardcore Erdoğanists. Watch it if you understand Turkish or maybe take help from a friend to translate it.

You are asking this as if there was a big difference in his appearance. Aside from his twisted eyebrows, in general he easily fits in what is attractive by society.
But why do you have this as a question anyway. What's the importance?
Look I'm not saying the following is true. It's just something I've read:
>**As they grew older they frequented the brothels. Here the unusually fair young Mustafa was so admired that women would often allow him their favours for nothing**. Thus did the trend of his sexual life start to show - more sought after than seeking, but readily complying. Sentimentally he was more loved than loving, his vanity now gratified by the passionate attentions of a young girl of good family, whom he was tutoring on his vacations from Monastir.

He is attractive in his all ages🔥
When I was in high school in Turkey, I was chatting up with a friend of mine during the recreation. I asked him "Would you let Atatürk do you if you were living during his life time?" he answered me "Hell yeah I would! Even if I'm still a man!"
