Yes. His father is from Kocacık, a very small village in Macedonia-Albania borders. Many people claimed that Atatürk came from the Balkan Turks, however, according to the 15th century official records of Kocacık where his father was born, population was mostly slavic-albanian. Atatürk was mostly an ethnic (Turkified) Albanian-Slav from his father's side.

Mustafa Kemal Atatürk’s paternal ancestors were of Oghuz Turkish descent. They were **Yörük (nomadic Turkmen) tribes** who migrated from the Aydın/Söke and Konya/Karaman regions in Anatolia. They were settled in the Balkans (Rumelia) during the 14th and 15th centuries as part of the Ottoman state's Turkification policies

Guess what? I am from a Bulgarian town comprised of only Turks and our history along with the towns next to us say that we were Yöruks that came from the Konya region (maybe Karagöz yöruks). My family on my dad’s side has Blue eyes and blond hair. The males on my grandfathers side all have ginger beards including me and my brother. I did a dna test and guess what, genetically I am closer to Romanians and Bulgarians than to any Turk. Yes I have central asian DNA and Anatolian, but never the less it’s more slavic than anything else. 100% Ataturk was a similar Balkan Turk who was majority Slavic or other Balkan. People converted from Christianity to Islam and they married the Turcomans that migrated there.

MoveParticular8358@reddit

DNA testing companies don't have a specific category for Balkan Turks. If they did, you would see Turks in the results rather than Slavs. The DNA of Balkan Turks is not the same as that of other Balkan populations, it is different and has its own distinct characteristics. Just as the fact that an Altai Turk may be genetically closer to Mongols does not make them Mongolian, being genetically closer to Romanians does not make you Romanian or Bulgarian
View on Reddit #87617061

starsiege@reddit

Just as that doesn’t make me Turkish either by the same logic. I have components from all of them. The Turkish ones are washed out because for the same reason we don’t look like Central Asians anymore… mixed with others. Turks from Turkey are a result of central asians mixing with local Anatolian peoples that lived there…. But genetically i am not close to Turks with Turkey. Illustrative DNA does actually have a Balkan Turk category when showing closest population. I am closest to Deliorman Turks (where i’m from) Second closest is Kirzhali Turks (also Bulgarian Turks) and third is Romanian and fourth is Gagauz. Next are Bulgarian Pomak and Bulgarian proper. I see slavs in the results because the makeup of Balkan Turks is majority slavic, anything else is cope.
View on Reddit #87619307

Substantial-Peach-90@reddit

Bro is coping very very hard. Generally Turks love coping because they have many reasons to be insecure. I’m sorry for attacking your fellow people, that are not even your fellow people as it seems like. They ask for it. Balkan Turks that have received different education seem to be much more intelligent than the Anatolian Turks. Regarding the categories, it’s very interesting how the first two are Bulgarian Turks you’re closer at and then the third is Romanian. Do these two groups have higher Slavic than the average Bulgarian? It seems like it, since the Romanians are the third closest and Bulgarians come later.
View on Reddit #87623732

MoveParticular8358@reddit

Coping? The average Deliorman Turk carries about 6% East Eurasian ancestry, which is similar to that of Azerbaijani Turks. Some Deliorman Turks can reach levels as high as 13%. Southern Bulgaria Turks carry around 8% East Eurasian ancestry. For comparison, this percentage is essentially 0% among Bulgarians and Romanians. Average Turkish person carries around %10 but its more correct so say between %5-%15 Average Early Ottoman Turk(1300-1500) carried %13 East Eurasian and range between %5-%25 They are definitely Turk genetically and culturally if u take an Deliorman Turk and compare his result with ancient samples U will see that closest samples are Avar Turks of Europe and Turk Danube Bolgars

My point wasn’t about being blonde or blue eyed. It was about the likely hood of Atatürk being more in common genetically with slav or other balkan group than your typical yöruk from Turkey.

Ok since there is a clear misunderstanding here let me recap for you… i said the point about my post is genetically he is most likely no different from other balkan turks and isn’t about his looks and you literally continued to state his phenotype again… My initial post regarding my own looks wasn’t the point.. i just wanted to make it clear that these features are VERY common amongst balkan turks and since half my family lives in a Turkey and i’ve travelled all around it…. i wouldn’t say blonde and blue eyed people are common… yes they exist… but anyway none of this even the point. The point was genetics…..

We should normally evaluate this based on the company you used for your DNA test (for example, if it’s MyHeritage, the results regarding Turkish ancestry percentage is 100% incorrect). But considering what you said, you can’t expect 100% pure blood from a people who were first nomads and later founded an empire; however, I must also point out that the Western Turks were not a people with black eyes and black hair to begin with. There will inevitably be people who married into other groups and created mixed bloodlines with different nations. This is part of human nature. Until relatively recently, people didn’t specifically focus on ethnicity; they looked at religion, traditions, and other customs. The issue here is the misinformation provided about Atatürk’s paternal Turkish lineage, and in another comment, I presented my objections to this using sources.
View on Reddit #87614276

I tested with four separate companies; 23&Me, Ancestrdna, family tree dna and illustrative dna. They are all very similar to one another except for their categorization of regions (23 and me uses balkan and greek to explain slavs and greeks)
View on Reddit #87614776

Teraturuneraburu@reddit

Kudos to you for taking the time to verify with different companies. Most people usually just trust a single company. Still, as I said, the issue here is the distortion of a different event to misrepresent the origins of an important figure. In Turkey, those who do this are generally individuals who are hostile to Turks and the Republic.

There is no evidence that shows the village of Kocacık received a Turkic migration from Anatolia. Only thing we know that in 15th century they were non-Muslim. It was impossible to send Turkic settlers to Kocacık in the first place because it is a deserted are and there are less than 10 families in that village. It was surely waaay smaller when Anatolian migrations to the Balkans happened. So no, this is probably just cope, people trying to connect his ancestry to Turkicness but the possibility is very low. For the side of his mother, it is true, his mother comes from Karamanoğulları, we know that for sure because her mother's family was famous even before Atatürk was born (for having Islamic scholars) and they have their own family tree. Which is not the case for Atatürk's father.

Showing the locations of the Naldöken, Tanrıdağ, Selanik, Vize, Ofcabolu, and Kocacık Yörük tribes, as well as the Aktav, Tırhala, Bozapa, and Yanbolu Tatars in Rumelia. There are also different registeries and researches like Kenan İnanbaşı's Studies on the Rumeli Yörüks and Fortress Registries which later used for Yoruk Organizations, Roots and Features in Ottoman Rumeli paper. Which clearly indicates Yoruk Ocaks in these regions. Especially in Kocacık. Yusuf Alaçoğlu’s six-volume series \*Tribes, Communities, and Clans in Anatolia\* includes quite comprehensive sections discussing the Yörük people, community groups, and the regions to which the Ottomans resettled the Turks. Kocacık is also included in this series. Once the Ottomans had captured Svetigrad(Kocacık) Fortress, what else could they have done but settle Turks there and in the surrounding area? It was a place of immense strategic importance. Not a deserted village area... Saying there’s no evidence when there are dozens of sources shows what kind of person you are.

Turks were never settled there it’s never recorded your historians had to make it up to make ataturk more turk, the ottomans themselves recorded that village as being mixed albanian-Slavic character no Turkic settlers ever recorded. The locals converted to Muslim and adopted Turkish identity.

Wouldn't it be kind of wrong to call most of the whole world "short kings" just because in today's tik-tok standards he would be considered a manlet?
View on Reddit #87615646

casual_philosopher02@reddit

I don't know.... I joke with my grandpa that he is short though his height was a result of the famine during ww2. You can call me tall queen🥀 because compared to women back then I have man height, I don't care. It has nothing to do with tiktok, I don't even have it
View on Reddit #87616280

Corrupt_Philosopher@reddit

Yeah, it might be it. It would be more comparable to call every girl above very thin "fat queens" because the average weight has gone up among women compared to what was standard back in the day. Not that they are fat, or short, but because social media dictates that what they should be called. "Tall queen" is a beautiful term, and one actually thinks of a beautiful queen while short king is more of an insult. I am using "tik-tok" as a reference to todays standards which by and large comes from general social media. You don't compare your height or body to your neighbor anymore but to the whole world.
View on Reddit #87617847

casual_philosopher02@reddit

you can call me fat queen too, I don't mind, it is banter, not a serious cinversation or statement I made. 173 compared to my male neighbors is also short, it was light hearted
View on Reddit #87618234

Corrupt_Philosopher@reddit

Well, you sure du seem casual. and I perhaps corrupt, but we are both apparently philosophers and this is of course banter. That said, I don't think everyone is as chill being called fat queen just as most short guys is offended by short king. Anyway, greek tall fat queens are great.
View on Reddit #87618672

casual_philosopher02@reddit

I mean people that say it seriously is different to banter always.... it is different to say it to deminish people, whether you say short, fat, giant, skinny, anything. Men have straight up 0 concept how much women weigh also.... you would be surprised how some think anything above 60kgs is fat..... name twiiiiins✨✨✨
View on Reddit #87619181

Corrupt_Philosopher@reddit

Yes, I agree. But it is hard to differentiate insults and banter on social media. Should I call you a fat queen, you have no idea if it is banter or if I am trying to diminish you, especially if it is in text. Yes, men are terrible at weight. I would say its the same problem, social media has made men think anything above 60 kg is fat, and made women think that men shorter than 180 is short kings.
View on Reddit #87620069

casual_philosopher02@reddit

I mean to me any man shorter than me seems short. I don't think lower than 180 is short short but it is also not tall, especially since most 20 somethings are around 180. I you say fat queen with sparkles I would see the banter nature of it

View on Reddit #87635470

shogunlazo@reddit

No woman thinks men under 180 are short, like where are you people getting this from 🤣 also how would it be an insult if we're literally calling him a "short king" ... Also short is relevant, back home in north Macedonia I'm tall'ish at 184, but when ive been to Montenegro,Serbia and Bosnia I was average and when I'm around my cousins who are 195 I get called short 🤣
View on Reddit #87624179

Corrupt_Philosopher@reddit

It would be an insult the same way someone would call someone a "fat king" or "ugly queen". "I'm still calling you a queen lolz, just ugly". It might be factual but being called short isn't a compliment to men, and is often a sore spot, especially for those who are short. Saying someone is short is more often than not used in a demeaning manner. I guess your buddies in Bosnia isn't saying you are short in order to elevate you or make you feel better, instead just stating fact or making a joke. Its great you won't find men under 180 short, and I guess you haven't been to social media much. But if your friends calls you at 184 short, it is probably more common than you think that women think that men under 180 are short. Image someone at 173 around your friends.
View on Reddit #87627943

shogunlazo@reddit

It's funny you mention the 1911 Italo-Turkish War. Despite having superior technology, your ancestors got completely bogged down in Libya by a handful of Turkish officers and local tribes led by Atatürk. He got that shrapnel injury in the battle of Derna while successfully stopping your troops. So no, you can't claim his eye. His scarred eye saw your ancestors halt in fear, and the history books show who actually won the strategic and moral victory there before you had to rely on diplomacy

When the fate of an entire nation rests on your shoulders, it’s no surprise that you may end up looking like the man in the second photo later in life. A youth spent in mountains, deserts, and plains, surrounded by conflict and war the stress and burdens of leadership the alcohol and cigarettes used in rare moments of relief and finally, the shrapnel wound that left one of his eyes with a noticeable gaze defect. There is nothing to be ashamed of in that. Because we know Atatürk’s life, the sacrifices he made, and the hardships he endured for his nation, he appears admirable and handsome in every photograph not because of flawless features, but because of the strength of character and determination behind them.

Actually, it's neither Cretan nor Gokturk. It was the fashion of the Prussian military in the late 19th century. While Atatürk didn't really like the Germans so much, he was from an Ottoman military school that had adopted the Prussian way. Hence the "Kaiser moustache". This type of moustache went out of fashion in around 1910s. Germans switched to the toothbrush moustache but Atatürk didn't adopt it and instead went with his own style for around 20 years. In his last years, he completely ditched the moustache and preferred a clean shave.

In 1914, right after the Balkan Wars, Atatürk attended a costume ball in Sofia hosted by the Bulgarians... dressed as a full Ottoman Janissary, complete with an authentic uniform shipped from Istanbul’s military museum. Imagine throwing a victory party for the empire you just defeated and one of their officers shows up like this.

Turks absolutely love Atatürk. Because he managed to secularise Turkey and remove Islam for a long time in that country. Kemalists usually dislike Islam and that’s one of the reasons they don’t like Erdogan and AKP.

1. Aya sofia was a church when he turned it into a museum. 2. He didn't destroy mosques who told you that 😭 3. The only reason some clerics were executed was because they tried revolt agaisnt us with the help of brits. 4. The alphabet reform was mainly about literacy and modernization, not destroying Islam.

You have little knowledge about current situation of Turkey. In 2026, even most conservative Muslims respect Atatürk and his framework is accepted by most of the Muslims too.

A Turk told me that you can’t be a true Kemalist if you don’t reject Islam and other religions. Turkey’s society is extremely polarised. Kemalists and Conservative Muslims don’t like each other and often clash on the street.
View on Reddit #87610924

Radical "Kemalists" say so, but atheism is not a prerequisite for laicism. Mustafa Kemal had no problems with religion, he just hated people being deceived and manipulated under the guise of religion.

Ataturk wanted to eradicate Islam completely from Turkey but couldn’t. He temporarily eradicated it. But with the AKP it came back. Ataturk did the maximum he could to remove Islam. Turn the Aya Sofia into a museum, destroy mosques, murder clerics, outlawing arabic script and islamic clothing etc

I never said that but I'm saying it right now, there are so many wrongs in one comment that I just don't want to spend my time listing facts to someone who's not going to change his mind. If he wanted to remove Islam he would not make sure that Qur'an is translated to Turkish.

Look I'm not saying the following is true. It's just something I've read: >**As they grew older they frequented the brothels. Here the unusually fair young Mustafa was so admired that women would often allow him their favours for nothing**. Thus did the trend of his sexual life start to show - more sought after than seeking, but readily complying. Sentimentally he was more loved than loving, his vanity now gratified by the passionate attentions of a young girl of good family, whom he was tutoring on his vacations from Monastir. \-Patrick Kinross, Atatürk: The Rebirth of a Nation
