I don't disagree that OP may be made redundant. But I do also believe that AI systems on work computers will be standard. And boy is that going to lead to surprises.

Anyone live near a reservoir ? Are they full yet?

*.... And I would have liked to known you, but I was just a kid..* *Your reservoir filled up.. Long before this current rainfall ever did* I checked - the whole thing fits - if you go like: "Yeah the one near me... Has been full.... For..months now... Levels came back up.. Pretty quickly... One the rain set in."

I'm going to say no to dates. I grew up in the Middle East and I know the ones I like , sticky and gungey.. But the kind Brits seem to like are dry and fibrous. I'd just be buying folk stuff that at least you like, that way you know it doesn't suck.

Did you grow up with a filing cabinet? Do you now have your own?

Posted by No_Impression7564@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 27 comments

Other_Exercise@reddit

Yes, it was a sort of field grey. It seemed to be extremely heavy, possibly so it didn't tip when you opened the top filing drawer. Oddly enough, however, they still live on digitally. Work with a boss of a certain age and they may insist on company computer files being stored consistently in certain folders, while rejecting the importance of naming the individual files. I believe that's because, at least from memory, filing cabinets focused far more on folder placement than individual file names.

What’s the best advice you have on saving/investing money as a 20 year old?

Posted by termunal@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 21 comments

As the quote goes: *Fail early, fail often, but always fail forward.* Meaning, investing in stuff that is higher-risk but high reward might just pay off. I bought some crypto and Tesla shares in my late twenties and I really wish I'd put more in! You have the gift of time, which means you can take risks that older investors, like people about to retire, cannot afford to take.

Apparently the machines are, it's the actual physical stores that often aren't. Anecdotally I have found the coffee from the machines tastes about the same as the cafes.

Prestige vs Pay: Would you choose a “high-status” job for £50k or a less skilled one for £100k? (UK)

Posted by Last_Somewhere9688@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 51 comments

Other_Exercise@reddit

Depends. I once took a high prestige (relatively speaking) for very low pay, not deliberately but out of necessity. Years later, I've much higher pay in a less prestigious job, but you can bet I still make sure to name-drop that prestigious role. So in other words, you can leverage a high prestige job into jobs that you then actually like, which is essentially the plot of the Devil Wears Prada.

How do people actually get regular 9-5 jobs in the UK?

Posted by Queasy-Ice-2575@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 141 comments

Other_Exercise@reddit

I work in a niche and got a job last year in essentially the number one competitor in almost the same role. Imagine, for example, doing accounts for Pepsi and then moving to do accounts for Coke. Companies like candidates that can hit the ground running and get stuck straight in. I happened to be that person. If I'd worked in a slightly different sector, I would have struggled a bit.

How much does it actually cost to live in the UK right now?

Posted by ElizabethTorn@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 22 comments

Other_Exercise@reddit

Where I live, up north, I have calculated that one could live a very, very basic life for about £700 a month. That assumes you are single and house share. Due to increased housing costs, today, I'd probably up that to £900. I used to live off £1,400 in this way, a few years back, and it was perfectly manageable. I still had money to do things I liked. Housing is the Biggie.

Is the doom and gloom around AI affecting you?

Posted by FunSensitive8602@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 313 comments

Other_Exercise@reddit

This. I work for a pretty old fashioned company which struggles to make money due to reasons. Most non-operational staff work from home, which makes many cost cutting measures impossible. The way I see it, they have two main choices that will make a difference: 1) Reduce headcount, and with this, reduce output. 2) Reduce headcount, but increase / maintain output with efficiencies from AI. Bear in mind, this a company where an admin assistant still types the minutes from meetings. Which option you think they are going to go for? Right now, there are not many jobs we have that AI can easily replace outright. But when people leave, one already thinks, 'can we just absorb their workload with AI?' Probably, in many cases. Beware of folk here who've used Copilot for 30 mins and declare it useless. That's like spending 10 minutes on a violin and saying it didn't sound good. AI, including as part of robotics, is going to change the world hugely, whether we like it or not.

I disagree somewhat with the National Railway museum. Last time I was there, you could go in precisely one train, some Japanese bullet train that feels incredibly generic. The problem with most museums is that they are archives or repositories. What would be much more interesting would be a load of old trains with little historical value that you could actually sit in, coupled with a simulation where you have a go with driving one, etc.

In the lower entry levels of my old employer, people would commonly just up sticks as soon as they got a new job. Another guy from a warehouse on here said he was lucky if you could get people to finish their shift after getting a new job, let alone serve a notice period. It's one of those rare situations where workers on low incomes have far more leverage on.

That's what strange about Asda - they somehow thought they could charge a whole load of money and meanwhile not care about quality. Their lack of profit and 'biggest loser' status among supermarkets reflects the in-store reality. I absolutely look forward to the day where it eventually goes out of business, which thankfully looks soonish.
