I'm right where you are. Really, except my kid is older. Any advice you'd take from a professional, not me. However, I can tell you what works for me: every few months, I take a retreat (near silent but not quite) in a convent or monastery. Believe me, I always look forward to these times. I find them deeply healing.

Same here. I also live here a northern post-industrial town, you simply never pay to park anywhere since the council removed some tariffs, and even before then, there was parking everywhere you went, right outside. Even a greasy spoon has masses of parking right outside. Huge quality of life thing.

I once worked with a guy who killed his wife with a hammer. Naturally our responses varied wildly, from humour to silence. Victims or near victims may choose to joke about such things. It's their right.

Funny story - one Christmas I went around buying all these expensive mince pies, puff pastry, M and S, you name it. Then, I had a deep filled budget one at my dad's church Christmas service, and realised they were the best ones I'd tasted.

Yes. I was in my late 20s, and I had an amazing job. Problem is that my personal life was going nowhere, and I could see the company I worked in was slowly going broke. I've never had a better job since, but to be fair what made it a great job was not much actual work was being done! As an another user has commented, the universe worked it out.

I welcome the scammy licensing fees being devalued. Many people wouldn't believe the amount of rent-seeking that goes on over practically worthless content. Recently we got slapped with hundreds of pounds usage fee for someone accidentally using a low quality stock image off Google. It's like: "yeah, ok, I'll pay that, and then just use AI images from now on". The image was of two people talking in a boardroom or some such. Obviously our fault, yes , but it was always a pretty low value industry to start with.

It's hard to say, because of all the 'stealth usage'. Folk don't want to say how much time it has saved them , as they'd rather pocket the difference, time-wise.

There was an anecdote on Reddit about someone showing an accountant how to use Excel in the early days. The accountant was blown away by Excel, because they wouldn't have to tot up numbers anymore. Which is why the silly Reddit comments on AI being terrible seem ill-informed. Even fairly subtle, low-power applications - such as using AI to transcribe a meeting (that's all Team's auto-transcription is) are an absolute game changer for some people.

I'm extremely keen to avoid forbidden fruit mentality, so with my pre-schooler I've worked to completely normalise alcohol. He gets offered a drop of beer or wine on the end of a finger. He's so used to it he usually declines it these days. This makes me happy. My family -and my sister's kids- forbid it, which leads to this sort of ludicrous levels of curiosity, them sniffing it, and asking me how it tastes, etc. I don't want that in my own family, as I'd worry they'd sneak it when I was not around.

Correct, down to his last £23k or whatever it is. This is a fairly common occurrence. Very few people in the social care system are permanently self-payers, as if you imagine paying up to thousands a week, it eats into your cash pretty fast.

I didn't mean the CQC immediately dropped off a cliff right when lockdown went wrong. But government bodies rarely speak as frankly as the CQC now does about itself: https://www.cqc.org.uk/about-us/improving-how-we-work/1125-update "We have been working to rebuild CQC, getting us back to our purpose of providing effective regulation of health and adult social care services" This is another way of saying some care homes haven't been inspected, as I've seen, in 7 years! When CQC don't inspect, it's the people who receive care who may suffer.

I work with people who fit the exact same description of your brother. Your first port of call is to speak to your council's adult social care team for a needs assessment. Or, of that isn't straightforward, book an appointment with your GP to make the referral. You won't be liable to pay for your brother's care, that is the duty of the council. Beware of backlogs, so book a needs assessment as soon as you can.

As soon as you get your salary each month, and I mean, *as soon as,* stick some of it into savings, for example, £300 or £500. Then, flagrantly squander the rest. This simple trick, alongside using cash withdrawn each week for purchases, (this isn't so feasible these days with online shopping) got me my house deposit. I'm a millennial, before I get snark re house, and it was a small house in a grotty area, and I had a well paying job for a time.

In a previous job: create documents that no one sees or cares about. The department head probably knows this, but they care about those documents being created so they can say we've done it. Then AI comes along, and it turns out it can create the documents, and despite the low quality, no one reads them anyway, so what difference does it make? The department head realises this, but doesn't care because they are about to retire, and the salary they get is paying for custom cabinetry on their forever home.
