What are the options for care for very low-functioning autism?

My brother is cared for by my mum. He has severe autism and learning difficulties and is incontinent, and for want of a better description, is a six-month old living in an adult's body. He would not be able to function at all on his own. My mum is getting old, and I'm starting to think about what would happen when she wouldn't be able to care for him. He requires round-the-clock care. In an ideal world, either myself or my missus would be able to care for him, but it would mean one of us leaving our job completely and become his full-time carer. He wouldn't be able to live in my mums house once she can't look after him with the occasional pop-in from a carer or nurse a few times a day. I've researched and there are private health care options which seem very expensive. I would think as he has no money himself, it wouldn't need to be paid for. The homes in my head seem so morbid though (I haven't actually looked at one for clarity). Has anyone had any experience of the types of care available? Thanks in advance.
