I’ve never really had the luxury of being able to turn my nose up to things, grew up quite poor depending on shops like Farmfoods and Shoe Zone. Worked with a guy once that had never been inside a pound stretcher or any similar shop, really sound guy but admitted he’d spent pretty much his whole life looking down on shops like that until a change in circumstances. Had a mate that used to get proper weird about going for a McDonald’s in a foreign country but honestly I’ve never really seen the harm in it.

Also stupid in what you have to realise how much bias you hold we all do. Thinj about autisitc people who cant read write or verbalise but have incredibly vivid inner worlds. They can still understand and think in english and write unimaginably good poetry in their head or have a supreme connecrion to nature. Life is vast complicated no one is stupid

People can be dyslexic. People may not have been taught better. People may know how to spell something the "correct" way but make a mistake in the moment and choose not to correct it because they don't feel it's the most important thing in that moment. Some things are wrong in "official" English but correct for the dialect a person has grown up with. Maybe they are lazy with language but only so they can focus their efforts and energy elsewhere. There's nothing wrong with that.

Of course. There is no excuse for this. You go into comments on Facebook for example and at least half the comments written by ENGLISH people have 3 writing mistakes in one sentence. Non native speakers are 10 times better at writing correctly than Brits. Unbelievable..

Here you go: I write, proof, and edit for a living. I read constantly. I still occasionally mix up homophones like "there" and "their" when I'm in a hurry while texting or posting, but not because I'm an idiot (in this arena, at least), poorly read, or don't know any better. I do it because I subvocalize while I write, and sometimes that leads to mistakes with homophones in particular. So maybe take that into consideration next time?

I absolutely do defend should of. I notice it, but I ignore it. Should of and should've are homophones in my accent. People are writing it how they hear it. And I know that plenty people I went to school with were let down by the education system. Fewer than half of my year got 5 GCSEs. It's not their fault if their spelling/ literacy isn't great.

I mean in the sense that some people have a lower level of cognitive functioning and mental processing than others. And their opinions do still matter. Like, I have worked with a lot of folks with learning disabilities and what they think is still important. That isn't the same as saying I would ask their advice on everything, in the same way I don't ask a lot of intelligent people advice on everything if it isn't their area of expertise. I'm not gonna ask a neurosurgeon for advice on plumbing. Unless they happen to know a lot about plumbing. And I wouldn't ask a plumber advice on neurosurgery. Unless they happened to be a former neurosurgeon.

I tend to separate training from what I see as "natural" intelligence - some brickie who couldn't write properly probably built this house, whereas I can't build a shelter out of sticks. That's fair, and I don't include people with learning disabilities in this - it feels wrong to call them stupid. I get you, though.

I think this is the thing is there's lots of ways people use stupid. Like historically it was meant to refer to people with learning disabilities and such like. But given it's pretty much exclusively used as an insult now I agree, it's shitty to call people stupid for that. There's also stupid as in like, thoughtless or careless, or stupid as in "acting like an asshole", or if someones lacking in common sense. But generally, just because someone is not smart, in any sense, whether that's because of a learning disability or they find a particular area harder to wrap their head around than others (I struggle with chess personally). Some people might be intelligent but have a poor memory and people conflate the two. So like. Generally, a persons intelligence says absolutely fuck all about their worth. And while we tend to simplify intelligence and hold it up as a virtue it's not really a black and white thing, it's more that some people find certain concepts and skills come to them more naturally than others.

The only time it matters, IMO, is when someone has been paid to write something. And I mean specifically to write it, so the traditional bugbear of greengrocers' handwritten labels doesn't bother me at all, because their main job is selling fruit and veg, not writing. Errors in paid-for writing annoy me because there are plenty of people out there who can write and would have done a better job - or they would have at least used spellcheck. There's a big sign in my local Tesco talking about being "stornger," and whatever company made that didn't bother to check it at all.

I agree, I think if someone isn’t interested in a thing then it’s harder to memorise it. Learning spellings can just be boring and the brain struggles to retain it. Then with “stupid” people, usually they just need to have broader discussions and learn about the world outside of however they have been living. Just look at blackkklansman, this people were incredibly racist until someone took the time to talk to them human to human.

People who go on holiday just to sit in the hotel/resort/beach. All of my holidays growing up were cultural/tourist experiences where we were always visiting a museum or art gallery or shop or some cultural/historical site or other. When I started booking my own holidays as an adult more recently, I nearly always planned to be scuba diving. So I never saw the point in flying all that way or travelling just to sit around. In more recent times though I've had weekend or longer trips where days or long periods of a day were spent basically just existing in a place that isn't my home city. I began to see a value in having times of my life where I just existed in a time and place without expectations or plans.

I didn’t have a passport until I was in my 20s and my first foray into travel was very much to explore and see things. First place I ever went was Paris, then Faro and then Tokyo. I was only a few years ago that I went on a package holiday, all inclusive. Now, I totally get it. I understand why people go on holiday just to chill. It’s bliss.

That's the actual luxury. At no point do you have to choose what to do, where to eat, etc. You just sit, then you just eat, and then you just sleep. For this mother of teenagers, an epiphany.

I loved Cape Verde, we went to Sal a couple of years ago and we did do a handful of excursions which allowed us to see pretty much the whole island. Paddling with baby lemon sharks was absolutely the highlight. Can't wait to go back.

We were there just as the pandemic was getting started , and we loved the lemon shark experience too. Also seeing the Blue Eye was spectacular and extraordinarily lovely. I wonder how Cap Verde's inhabitants survived the loss of all tourism revenues during lockdowns, and if the 'no worries ' attitude and local resilience saw them through.

We’ve got a daughter and just discovered Eurocamp. Yes, you have choices, but they’re offered to you in minimal drips. Are we barbecuing tonight, getting a pizza from camp-takeaway or eating at the restaurant. Are you doing kids club today or not. Are we doing the evening thing? That’s about it. Almost nothing else. It really is luxury. A week of that and a week of exploring another city via Air BNB has a bit of exploration.

My next holiday is going to be exactly that. All inclusive, week by a pool or on a beach relaxing, reading books, listening to music etc. I like holidays with activities too, but I haven't had just a relaxing break in years, maybe even over a decade. It's always a week off on holiday and doing stuff, or just a week off to do a project at home. Might have a few lazy days, but it's not the same without unlimited food cooked by someone else and a beach to lie on. If anyone has recommendations of hotels, let me know 😂

TBH part way through a two week multi-city break in Iberia/Morocco last autumn I spent a night each in Faro and Albufeira doing basically just that. I was pretty drained from lots of exploring around Gibraltar, Tangier and Seville, so it was a nice reset before I went off to Lisbon and Madrid. Factor in good weather, cheaper accommodation, and generally cheaper food/drinks prices, and I get the appeal. For comparison I had a look at a Wetherspoons hotel for a random weekend in Weston Super Mare, and they wanted £100 a night! My hotel in Albufeira was half that, and much nicer.

I have young kids and I very happily take them to resorts/all inclusive holidays and just stay in the hotel, its way easier and more fun for them! They're not going to appreciate or enjoy going around historical sites at their current ages and honestly just having them entertained while I'm sipping drinks by the pool is holiday enough for me 😂 There will be time to take them to historical sites etc when they're older and would actually enjoy it a bit more

When you've got a child it just makes so much sense. Made the holiday so enjoyable because we had to think about so much less than if we had done our typical type of holiday.

Exactly this. I used to turn my nose up them. My mother always went on and on about us not going to *those* resorts and what a great, culturally educated child I was. Had my first during covid and when we actually went to travel with her, cultural, excursions, the whole lot, it was exhausting of course and I actually don't remember much of it. Not worth it. The next year we booked a resort in Menorca. I felt embarrassed to tell my mother - it was a package holiday too!! And the best fucking holiday ever. It was soo much fun, it was great seeing her have fun. And we did some outings, just got the right balance of kid disco and a bit of local heritage. We now have two kids and are still on the resorts. Not planning to stop until the youngest is 4/5. And even then, I can still very much see the value of a holiday where I don't have to think or organise shit, just be.

I think the balance is good! My other half and I both went on those sorts of holidays as a child - resort hotel, either half board or self catering villa, pool etc. But his parents never left the resort, while my parents would hire a car for a few days and go to eg greek ruins, plus we'd do some excursions. I have much better holiday memories than him, while his all merge together. The last time he went on holiday with his family, he (over 18 and the oldest child) decided to book a trip on his own to a historical site and his family all made fun of him.

My two are 10 &13 now and we’ve gone back to more ‘cultural’ holidays now that they are old enough to have a say, stay awake and walk a good distance although they will no doubt complain about that. We can research things together and we all know that everyone gets to do their thing at some point, we also all get an input on where to eat (I am not one for cooking on holiday!). I would never have wanted to do all inclusive pre kids, but it has been great while they were younger and I wouldn’t dismiss doing it again for a few days chilling. There is something nice about not having to think too much for a few days.

You tend to get what you pay for, Jet2 have never let us down even in the cheapest options, but if you want a good location near somewhere nice and walkable, the cost goes up loads. The cheapest ones are nice places but in the middle of nowhere. Hugh Street travel agents are actually great at making recommendations!

We booked through Jet2 for Tenerife last year to Gran Melia Palacio and it was absolute heaven on earth. Cost a small fortune but we and our toddler have talked about how great it was every week since, we went in October and it was beautifully sunny, great food, lovely room and nice pools.

It's smaller and very Spanish (though the staff had good enough English for our needs), both of which were great. Jet2 were great, very smooth procedure, no complaints.

We've done AI for years and love it. When the kiddies were young we saved a fortune on juices, ice cream and water through the day, which actually made the holiday cheaper than when we'd previously gone self catering. Now we're in our 60s we love just being able to do absolutely nothing if that's how we feel or take a little trip if we're feeling energetic.

I used to be the same, my first holiday with my now wife, she just plonked herself in a lounger and laughed when I suggested hiring a car or something! I always did loads when on holiday, and now we do nothing. We have a kid now and it just does make sense - no decisions to make or food pickiness issues to worry about. We still do loads of UK holidays like camping, pods etc where we'll be walking everywhere and doing different stuff, but the overseas one or two week sunny holiday every year is a completely chilled one.

I'm the opposite. I grew up with the lounge around the hotel type holiday as a kid and I fucking hate it. The scrambling for a lounger in the morning, the fact I don't want to just sit on a lounger all day. I don't like the beach because why would you want to get covered in sand. I'd rather save the money and take a week off and lounge about at home. I find it really awkward to properly relax in public and I get uncomfortable in the heat. I'd rather go on holiday and go out for the day and see stuff. I find it more relaxing to go for a wander in a foreign town than I do sat getting restless by a pool all day. This isn't me being a snob. If you enjoy an all inclusive resort then go for it but it's not for me.

Interestingly I think a lot of people like yourself enjoy doing the opposite of whatever they did as a kid a bit. Did a lot of resort type holidays when I was younger and enjoyed them, but city breaks felt like a whole new world as a result. Personally don't think a resort-type venue but all-inclusive would be a bit much for me. Exploring new food places is one of my favourite parts of a trip abroad.

I think the problem is that I just get restless. I can happily be comfortable and lounge about at home but I'm in the comfort and privacy of my own home. I can watch TV or game. I'm chilling with my dog etc. Going to sit on a plastic chair in the baking heat surrounded by other people. I just can't relax the same as I would at home and I just get a bit restless. Maybe I'm one of the few people that finds it really easy to switch off at home and I don't need a holiday to make up for it. I've recently been to Dubrovnik in Croatia and it's one of my favourite places. The old town is a bit touristy but it's amazing. I found a ruined hotel resort that was destroyed during the war of independence from Yugoslavia. Having a wander round an old fishing village and stopping for some fresh food is far more relaxing to me than sitting by a pool/beach. I'm considering going to [lake Bled](https://www.happy.rentals/admin/uploads/Bled-with-lake-island-and-mountains-in-the-background-95921.jpg) in Slovenia. Having a nice walk around the lake and having a coffee overlooking the lake. Maybe hiring a little row boat. Sounds so relaxing to me but not in a way I would be restless

With you 100% although I grew up doing the holidays I still now enjoy. I cannot stand being in a hotel surrounded by other people and my kids get really bored of it too regardless of activities. I find day tripping to take in a new town or cultural activity more fun, relaxing and it has the benefit of enriching my kids experiences. Maybe it’s because I’m ginger though, and the idea of sitting in the sun all day is anathema to me. I don’t look down on those who enjoy the All Inclusive thing though. I do get it. But it’s not for me.

I’ve naturally just started doing this over the last 5 years or so.. my partner and I found this great place in Spain, that’s relatively quiet. We’ve gone like 5 times in a row, every winter. Every year we think about trying something new, and then we just think, well we know this place, where to go, what we like there, and best thing is we now don’t have that pressure of doing something new or occupying the day with activities because we’ve done it all before, so we feel less guilty if we want to just chill at the air bnb all day in the sun, read a book, do fuck all and then wander into town for a dinner that night.

I was definitely more snobbish about all inclusive holidays - but can definitely appreciate their appeal now. Sometimes you just don't want the burden of constant decision making. I still prefer action packed holidays - primarily because I find I disconnect more - too busy to stay in my head too much (especially as I tend to travel solo). That physical tiredness of doing a lot of physical activity can actually be mentally restorative (and then I am so tired I actually sleep well at night). However, I no longer feel guilty for having a lazy day or for not seeing everything.

If you have kids, those resort/all inclusive type holidays are brilliant in my opinion. You don’t have to cook, do food shopping or clean. It truly feels like a break for parents (well for us anyway) and the kids have endless access to a pool, drinks, ice creams, snacks and there are usually multiple activities for them to do on site often at no extra cost. And you’ve still got the freedom to venture offsite and do a bit of sight seeing or touristy things if you wish.

They are great, we are lucky that we’ve been able to do a few all inclusive holidays over the years, but I wish we could do it more often. They have always been the least stressful holidays and everyone seems to equally have a good time, whereas with more self catering based holidays, everyone still has fun but there’s always someone (usually me) who has to keep track of spending, plan meals, wash up etc - which does take away from the whole point of a holiday a bit for me.

Yes this is something I hear a lot from parents. A friend of mine has older kids (aged between 8-11) so they always opt for CentreParks type places with on-site activities like ziplining or climbing or swimming that the kids have things to do (and time away from parents which they seem to like!) while they get to just chill out, do some fun things themselves including having private time with their partner.

My mindset changed when I had children. Pre-kids, my holidays were all adventures - backpacking, diving, sometimes just booking a flight and seeing what happened when I got there. I was pretty snobby about the idea of all-inclusives where you just go and sit by the pool. Now, we do an all-inclusive every year and I love it. The kids get freedom to swim and play and love all the activities, and I get to *relax*. When they’re older and have more stamina we will probably start doing more varied holidays but for now with 2 young children and 2 knackered parents, it works.

I've had a similar experience. My personal ideal holiday would be something like a city break with some sightseeing, activities, running and a lot of walking around to see the place. I went on an all-inclusive 'sit by the pool with a cocktail' holiday which I kind of looked down upon at the time - but I ended up loving it. It was very relaxing, and nice to not have to plan anything. Food, drinks and some activities were provided without me having to think. I wouldn't want it all the time, but they totally have a place and I now respect people choosing that kind of thing.

You can also combine the two if you choose the right location and timings. It’s actually bliss going off on an excursion and coming back exhausted to your resort and walking into the buffet and the cocoon of being totally looked after again. Ditto, but when kids came along. No one enjoys it when you're dragging kids round museums or Old Towns in 40C heat becuse you're limited to the school holidays to go away. It's so much easier to go all inclusive/ half board - no worrying about finding a restaurant everyone likes, you can stagger when you eat. Besides, when you have young kids sitting by the sea in the sun at 10am with a double Ouzo and lemon in hand is just bliss. The key is finding hotels/locations that don't cater mainly for British tourists...

Parents of young children tell me that doing some of the touristy stuff is fun but it gets a bit of a pain sometimes to juggle finding a kid-friendly toilet, a drink or snack, somewhere to sit if they're bored/tired/having a bad day, wondering if that activity or place is going to even be kid-friendly, be pushchair accessible or whatever. Sometimes it's just easier to have a day where the kids are in the swimming pool burning some energy and you're able to chill out with a beer/drink and have toilets nearby.

Between the both of us working full time, them at different clubs/ activities in the evenings each night of the week, plus on Saturday and Sunday mornings - our opportunities to sit down and relax amount to a maximum of 2.5 hours in the evening. Going somewhere where you're fully catered for, and you can spent a good chunk of time in lovely weather sitting down, reading, listening to music, splashing about in the pool is a godsend. We've really grown to enjoy them. We're lucky that we can, but we usually do two main holidays in the year - Easter time in the UK somewhere where we bring to dog too - the coast, peak or Lake District for long family walks, pub lunches, evenings playing games etc. And then a more relaxing summer holiday somewhere hot with a pool.

Streaming seems like a likely culprit, people's favourite artists now days don't have to be someone who could get airtime on radio/TV. More to do with the Internet in general as opposed to streaming specifically. My favourite artist got popular through MySpace, if we jumped back to the 80's there's a near zero chance that I would ever have heard of her. There would have been only so many Canadian pop singers that would get any play on UK radio/TV and it would have been the ones more popular than her than her. People's favourite artists seem much more personal today. 90% of people's favourite artists used to be (one of the top 15) of (blank) genre. Even among the music hipsters they were still only hearing whatever failed (blank) genre made it to their local record stores bargain bin. Now? The choice is almost infinite. Another artist I really like was a random SoundCloud discover queue recommendation before she had even 500 followers on any platform. She wasn't even doing the numbers of a random hot girl. Even now that she's grown a decent bit she's still nowhere near popular enough that I would have heard of her in the 80's

I think most of us have been there. I remember this sort of attitude being rife as a teenager regarding almost anything, music, tv, films, clothes etc. I was guilty of it myself, refusing to listen to certain bands even though I probably would have liked their music, because of some weird snobbery about how they weren’t ‘good’ and that people who listened to them were losers or had bad taste. I see it a bit in my own teenage child too, as much as I try to discourage it. It’s a phase many young people go through as they figure out who they are and most people grow out of it, I think.

I've found it was one of the easier apps to train the algorithm how you like it as well. I've used it enough at this point that I just get endless cat & dog videos, guitarists, and a sprinkling of video games. As long as at first you just swipe away from stuff you don't want quickly it learns pretty fast. Now I get 20 or so minutes of nice animal videos and stuff in the morning until I'm awake enough to get out of bed.

Its got a reputation because of a few scruffs but honestly it's perfectly fine. When we went it was full of old Spanish people so we just looked where they were eating and found the best restaurants away from the tourist streets. Apart from a few party areas its another Spanish city, and it has some beautiful areas and cities nearby

Cheap enough to spend actual time with friends, and yeah the food isn’t great but it’s fine. And nice to be able to eat in a pub that still actually feels like a pub? They all do food now, and I don’t have anything against places being (super norm-core) family friendly but a lot of pubs these days feel like you’re there to sit around a table, have your meal/drink with your family then go home, rather than chat at a bar, get a bit drunk, have a little dance, meet new people etc. it’s good to have a dingy dive bar sometimes. They have different types. Some which are more bar like and others that are more pub like. Some with music some without. Ofc there are plenty of places with a lot of pubs to choose from, but a lot of pubs these days are bought out by Young’s, Greene King etc and lose a load of their personality.

I’d got tired of slippers always going manky after a while, the more soft and comfortable they are, the more they’re basically foot sweat sponges. Crocs are comfortable to wear around the house, and can literally give the a scrub if anything spills on them or think they need a clean. Fitness levels. I used to work in an industry where a high level of fitness /looking fit was required. Leaving your desk to go to the gym 2 hours a day or go out and get steps was seen as part of your job requirement. We had cooks too so managing portions was a case of picking the right thing, not cooking etc. Couldn't understand why people couldnt lose weight or weren't fit and assumed it was laziness. I changed jobs and man, going to the gym after work is a chooooore. Then after the gym I have to choose, make, and eat a dinner!? Nightmare.

I am a person that enjoys the classics (especially Moby Dick) and I'm always horrified by people who read them because they feel they have to. If I don't find a book fun, and that has included lots of 'important' works, I abandon it. Being fun is the whole point of reading novels. They aren't supposed to be good for you. And if your idea of fun is something less reputable, good for you. Life is far to short to read boring books because you hope it will impress someone (possibly yourself).

It was definitely chewy, like a big, tough piece of meat. Whale meat perhaps. I read it in a foreign country where I didn't, at the time, speak the language and there weren't any English speakers. I was on my own a lot of the time and I my job was long distance and very intermittent, so I was mostly just hanging out on my own in a snowy winter, with weather where you couldn't always leave the house, with noone to talk to. I think that without that amount of time and space I might not have been able to keep up the concentration required to get through it. I don't think you can dip in and out of it, I think you have to get into the mindset and the language and stay there for long periods, a bit as if you are on a long sea voyage yourself. So it's not an easy read, but I did find it an extremely full and rewarding read, and an experience of it's own, not like most other books. It was more like going on a very long and quite difficult journey. Finnegans Wake was very similar, you can't read it and have a normal life because every time you go back to normal life you forget how to understand it. With Finnegans Wake you have to get yourself into almost a state of delirium to understand it. I'm not sure Moby Dick was quite that extreme, but you do need lots of free time and to get into the rhythm of it. Obviously there's also the possiblity that you don't want to be there and spend time with those people. You don't like them and they're not interesting to you, and that is absolutely fine. I gave up half way through A la recherche du temps perdu because being in that place with those people was an ordeal for me. I don't care how great other people think that novel is, I just hated them all and I didn't want to be there. I know people are sniffy when you say you didn't like a book because you didn't like anyone in it, but reading is really like stepping out of your life and your body into someone elses, and if you don't like being there, why stay?

I took a while with Virginia Woolf. For years the only one I liked was Orland. But then, when I was in my 30s, I read To the lighthouse and for some reason that one clicked. I still go in and out with her, some I like a lot, some not. I find an irritation borne from my class, or lack of it, often sets my teeth on edge with her characters. I couldn't ever lose the conviction that Mrs Dalloway would have sent me round to the servants door, and Virginia Woolf would have too.

Moby Dick was hard work but I really enjoyed it and I am able to entertain my partner with stories about the book some 15 years later. Also if you’re a Futurama fan, it’s got a lot of MD references and it is fun to get those jokes. I totally agree with you, I just happen to lol Moby Dick. I particularly enjoy the extended (possibly whole chapter?) musing on whether a whale is a mammal or a fish. He discusses how, when you cut a whale open, on the inside it looks identical to land mammals with its lungs and such. But, you see, it lives in the sea. So it’s a fish. End of story

If you have a hard day, a very cold can of macro-lager whilst having a hot shower is absolutely amazing. I had a friend at uni who used to do pre-drinks this way, and one evening after a particularly challenging day about 20 years later I decided to try it again - it was wonderful and I highly recommend it. The contrast of the hot shower outside and cold beer inside is wonderful.

Farmfoods. I'm a gym nerd and eat a ridiculous amount of meat and there's no way I could afford it without FarmFoods. Their £9.99 2.5kg bags of chicken save the day and it's never woody like supermarket chicken. It's actually my favourite chicken. Their offers are insane too. All lack adequate levels of methionine for effective muscle synthesis and have very low bioavailability. If I get 100g of animal protein my body will absorb 90g+ of protein. If I get 100g of protein from beans and lentils my body will absorb maybe 60g of that protein. To get over 300g of protein a day I would need to eat to 5 kilos of cooked beans and lentils and take methionine supplements, I'd have extreme digestive distress, and far too many carbs for my daily intake. It's much easier to just eat 1.5kg of meat and not be bloated and inflamed.

I'm 285lbs/130kg lean I know how much protein I need to gain muscle at this point. Again, getting the required nutrition via plants requires insane volume. I dated a vegan briefly and tried it. The amount of food I had to consume was literally impossible and I eat lot usually and I spent most of the day farting and shitting because vegan food produces so much waste. I agree, and where reasonably practicable I do the latter. Where I can't, I try to make the most ethical choices with the constraints that are in my life. For example, for Christmas dinner this year we had Poulet de Bresse, which is an AOC production that requires extraordinarily high standards of welfare (for example, normal chicken farming has a maximum density of 9 birds per square metre. PdB has one bird per nine square metres, so 81 times as much space per bird. To put this in context, a standard bird has approximately two shoe boxes worth of floor space, but a PdB has a super king size bed plus enough space for a large adult human to comfortably walk around the bedframe. Obviously there are other aspects of animal welfare besides space, but that's a straightforward illustration of the scale of the difference.

I have two small children and a wife who has no interest in vegetarianism. I don't have the time or inclination to learn how to cook an entire new menu of dishes that I can cook that don't include meat (and which my family will all eat, and which meets their various nutritional needs) and which taste good. I have no philosophical problem with vegetarianism, but I enjoy food and basically every vegetarian or vegan recipe I have tried has been a ballache to cook, uses loads of different ingredients and has been sensorially underwhelming. On top of this, a *lot* of vegetarian dishes rely on spiciness to make them at least somewhat satisfying, and my wife is intolerant to capsaicin. I'm also intolerant to bananas and avocadoes, and really don't like eggs (absolutely fine with them as an ingredient, but much like flour I really don't see the appeal when served with nothing else mixed in), which means a lot of veggie recipes aren't really great for me.

Okay so I used to be super snobby about reading, because I love reading and never understood why anyone didn't read. Met my now husband who's extremely dyslexic and finds reading challenging, I now get it. I feel like a twat for being so judgemental to other people because I didn't think from their point of view. Me too. Your own movie in your head, why wouldn't you like that. My younger sister has dyslexia too, it's really opened my eyes to how reading is a chore for some people. Then there's the popularity of podcasts. Ive tried, but I can't get on with them at all, I just end up zoning out without some form of visual stimulation. Yeah, I am faaaaar from a car guy, and despite driving an ST realise that I know basically fuck all about how they actually work (although I do believe if I needed to I could follow an instruction manual to fix things). Basically the same to me - the car is an appliance, a very fun one. I told him I found the automatic OneDrive backup annoying because it tried to backup all my sims mods, so I was going to upload all the important stuff to a different, manual backup instead. I wouldn't say fast fashion and Shein style outlets are in issue only due to snobbery, people shouldn't be buying them on ethical grounds because their production directly involves slave labour, causes a massive amount of environmental harm and creates mass amounts of waste. They are throwaway clothes and I understand it's convenient for people who want to create a large wardrobe on a budget, but if we can move away generally from the need to keep up with trends and change clothing constantly a decent and longer lasting wardrobe can be built for the same price albeit with less variety. I have many faults but have never really been a snobbish person. I put it down to not being very popular as a teenager but have a secure group of good friends - I knew that listening to the right music etc wasn't going to get me in with the cool gang but didn't really pine for it either. I've also always have an eclectic selection of friends which helps open the mind to things you might not immediately like otherwise. But things like Temu I am a massive snob about and won't apologise. It's not that I think it's not good enough for me. I just reject it on ethical grounds. Now that I am more financially secure than I used to be I also judge other people for buying this sort of thing, if they could possibly afford something more responsible. My neighbour told me they went on holiday to Dubai the other day - and promptly dropped massively in my estimation.

I went on a trip around east Asia a year or so ago with some friends that were showing me where they grew up and introducing me to family. They grew up relatively poor. So I was in some out of the way places doing proper local stuff. Their basic shops for clothes are a LOT higher quality then ours. In fact most shops selling anything were higher quality. The only places that I could find an equivalent were near slums. Its not 'made in China' that makes it bad quality, its made for the UK market that makes it bad.

Cover bands. I used to think they weren't worth the effort to see a 'fake' karaoke version of the bands I like. Now with the stupid costs for gigs I'm more than happy to watch them and thoroughly enjoy and sing along. Plus the venues are smaller and more intimate and we need to support local venues before we lose them. An example.... SOAD 160 quid plus for a ticket if you can avoid surge pricing.... I saw a tribute version for 16 quid with a slipknot tribute thrown in! Plus no long queues for bar/toilets. Plus I'm booked in for several tribute festivals over the summer for about 150 quid all in compared to the big festivals at at least double that

Yeah honestly there's some I even prefer now. Some of the home brand bread from tesco is certainly better than Warburtons for half the price, as an example. Squash as another one is pretty good, and I don't get them often but ready meals are a winner in the shop's favour for me. The only things they seem to struggle hard with is stuff like Coke, and I guess coke has a secret recipe for a reason. But aside from that why bother spending £2.30 on a tin of heinz beans when there's practically identical beans available for 50p?

If it’s just a single ingredient, then the brand doesn’t matter. Tinned tomatoes or tuna are the same whether it’s Lidl own brand, big brand name or Marks & Spencer’s finest. Where you can taste the difference is in processed food items. I can taste the differences between real coke/pepsi compared to shop own brand for example. This is really not true. Look at the nutritional content of those different products and you'll see major differences. For example, the protein content of flour varies widely, and different strengths have different uses (e.g. high protein for bread, low protein for cakes). Many low-price tinned tomatoes have lower sugar and protein than more expensive ones, which is because they've been irrigated to give more yield, but diluting the stuff that actually makes them tomatoey (or they've been harvested earlier, making them less ripe).

No, I don't imagine they are, but the protein content difference is indicative of the levels of dilution and ripeness. I'm not saying that the cheap tin is a bad deal because the protein drops from 1 gram to 0.6 grams (for argument's sake) for the sake of losing 0.4g protein, but that the lower protein is indicative of more water and everything is being lowered - and you can't trick that measurement by simply adding more protein like you can with sugar. More water means less dry matter, which is where the flavour and nutrition comes from.

If you’re making something simple like an arabbiata where the tomatoes are the main part of the dish then you’re going to notice a _huge_ difference in quality. I personally can’t go for the cheaper stuff for those types of dishes, it ruins the dish. They’re weak, watery and sometimes stringy. Canned tuna - yes and no. If your goal is to mix it into a tuna mayo or something then there’s not a huge difference in those cans but if you want it in say a salad or on its own as part of a meal then the Spanish and Portuguese brands are incredible. You won’t believe that tinned tuna could taste so good, we’re talking McDonalds hamburger vs ribeye steak - both fine but one is clearly much nicer than the other. That’s why I have the cheaper tuna _and_ Ortiz tuna at home.

This is the essence of my comment above about commodities. There will be people out there for whom the brand of tinned tomatoes, baked beans, or pasta is as irrelevant as the brand of petrol they use, since they view both as simply fuelling. There will be others that care passionately about their car's performance and will only use 98RON super premium stuff from Shell, or that are pasta afficionados who are affronted by the existence of low-grade teflon die smooth pasta that's sold for 50p a pack and only eat bronze die premium stuff from Garofalo or Giuseppe Cocco. I'd argue that you just need to know what the difference between the two are and whether for your needs the difference matters. If you're making a pasta bake with dolmio for a horde of teenagers, just use the cheap pasta and let them wolf it down. If you're making a proper Italian meal to try and impress a date, using the cheapo stuff is a bit silly since it is clearly not as nice.

Cheap guitars. When I first started messing about with guitars in the 1990s cheap guitars were absolutely terrible. They were typically unplayable and unless you knew what you were doing already or had access to someone who knew what they were doing who could fix it for you then you weren't going to get anywhere with it. Cheap guitars today are made with computer controlled equipment and can be extremely consistent with specification, fit and finish. This means that if you buy a £/$200 guitar new today you can typically expect it to be playable (even if not necessarily perfect) straight out of the box.

The device itself isn't necessarily the problem, it's fundamentally not too different to putting kids on front of the TV to distract them. The issue is it being relied on too much. I’m similar about not wanting to go to a chain restaurant or fast food chain. I’ve spent hundreds of pounds (probably) to go somewhere new, with an incredible variety of local cuisine and restaurants I would never be able to get back home - why would I go to a McDonalds? I don’t even like going to chains in other British cities - I can get that food whenever I want, if I’ve spent the time and money to travel somewhere, the new food is part of the experience. Just have to research to make sure you’re going somewhere well-reviewed! Now, what have I *stopped* being a snob about? Cheap meat. I used to always avoid the cheapest supermarket meat since my parents always got the mid-level stuff or the premium on special occasions. But when I moved out, I was on a budget and tried the cheapest meats, and it was perfectly fine. I’m a good cook (I like to think!) so I know how to cook cheap meat and still have an enjoyable meal. (The secret is curries, and cooking low and slow. With chicken thighs I also have a flavourful oil mixture I use when air frying, so it doesn’t matter that the chicken itself is a bit bland.)

I’m a tea snob and I can tell you that I don’t find most basic teas to be drinkable. I can’t drink supermarket own brands or the “usual” basic brands like Tetleys/Yorkshire/PG Tips as they all taste bitter to me. I don’t have milk in my tea, so the flavour comes through really strong and therefore I am incredibly picky. I have a little tin with a few tea bags in it in my handbag that I take to work, as I cannot drink the stuff they supply.

Spelling and grammar. Still see a lot of people who are aghast if someone uses the wrong "your" or says "loose" instead of "lose". I've realised that it really doesn't matter. Maybe they're dyslexic, maybe they didn't get access to a good education, maybe English isn't their native language, maybe they're just really tired. It's none of my business and if I can understand it, I do. If I can't understand it, I ask a clarifying question. I'm not their teacher and don't need to correct them. Yes, if you're writing a professional publication you ought to get it proofread, but in general, the rest of the time it's just snobbery to take offence at a poorly spelt word.

It might come over as snobbery but I find it really challenging to read what they write of they can’t use your/you’re they’re/their in the correct context. I think people often misunderstand what dyslexia. As a kid the only holiday we ever got was a week / fortnight in a caravan at some place in the uk, which I thoroughly enjoyed, I knew no different, but I also felt it was because we were poor, which we were, but a lot of my friends went on fancy holidays all over the world. I longed to travel the world as an adult and give my kids what I thought were “better holiday experiences” so took our kids all over the world, however to this day all of them (grown adult men now) have said the best holiday they had was when we took them to freezing cold Scotland for a week, they got eaten alive by midgies, but they had the best time learning to build little camp fires, exploring the woods, doing jigsaws in the freezing caravan at night with snacks and watching movies. I was never a snob about holidays after that trip, they literally didn’t stop talking about it.

I've probably become more snobbish over time rather than the opposite but mostly because if you grow up skint and get out of it then as an adult you realise that basically it's all class system bollocks that people are scared to do certain things. The difference between 90% of the British population is like a 2-3x multiple in income after tax. The way people go on about it it's like we all live in different galaxies. You can just go into Waitrose. If you want you can learn to ride a horse or fly a plane or sail a boat or whatever, it might take you a few years and you might need to save up a bit but it's not like it costs a million quid. You can just go on a ski trip, do cheap accommodation and drive yourself etc. Obviously none of this applies if you are proper hand to mouth skint but then I mean in that case who cares, your job then is to figure out how to get out of it.

I get checking the nib size & length of fountian pens, I do that with regual pens to the point I took all the oens I had and did a comprehensive list of their nib size, weight, ink flow and how well they write. Turns out the top two pens that fit my standards were a nice gel pen from a hotel I stayed at in London & a Bic 4 colour pen from Disneyland Paris. Haven't thought to look at the GSM of paper when buying notebooks, will have to give that a try.

I've found as someone who doesn't do a load of makeup that there's a few indie brands I like for things like eyeshadows and lipstick as I do goth/alternative makeup so I'm often after weird colours so for me the extra cost is worth it but yeah the more 'drugstore' brands are fine for just about anything else I need. I've also found that those brands are finally doing a lot better when it comes to like foundation shades and stuff as well so I can actually find a decent shade match without having to pay and arm and a leg.

It's not a money thing, it's a flavour thing. The fries are top tier but everything else is like eating dirt that's been in the rubbish bin. Absolutely horrendous. I never went into Lidl or Aldi before covid with a preconception that it’s cheap shit shop. When Covid hit, I started to wonder around shops and went into Aldi and Lidl, and started to see some value in their products. I’m now a regular Lidl customer only because it’s the only one next to my house, however, I still call it a shit shop, yet go there everyday. Budget airlines like easyjet or Ryanair; I used to look down on their clientele. Sure, their customer service is crap and they tend to have more delays compared to (e.g.) BA but often they are still the most convenient way to reach your destination especially for less prominent cities in Europe.

I love trying McDonald's in a foreign country - especially if it's a country with cheap food. Fast food chains have to be a lot more inventive when they're not the cheap option - Chinese McDonald's Sichuan chicken burgers are great, and Vietnamese McDonald's even sidelines the burgers in favour of surprisingly good Korean fried chicken. Skipping one authentic lunch isn't going to harm the holiday. But I've stopped being a snob about second hand clothes since it's no longer just dowdy items in a charity shop - vintage shops are everywhere now and sites like vinted make it easy to find anything second hand.

When I moved into this house my brother convinced me to go to the one at the end of the estate for some stuff and I pretty much immediately changed my mind. For day to day stuff it’s basically the same as anywhere else but way, way cheaper. Lidl can fuck off though.

I think music was a big one for me, back in the 00s I used to have large MP3 collection, carefully curated/organised, listened to on my iPod a lot etc. I used to look down on people who didn't have my tastes (I cringe about this now) I'm not sure what changed, maybe in the 2010s I lost interest in music somewhat after streaming came on the scene and I stopped accumulating music in my collection. Over the past few years I've been trying to get back into music somewhat and I've definitely broadened my horizons a lot. I'll listen to anything these days, even stuff I would have 'hated' back in the day, Taylor Swift, Chappelle Roan, Sabrina Carpenter etc - it's music at the end of the day, sure you can dislike some stuff but that doesn't mean others should dislike it too.

I've stopped being a snob about people. I used to be of the opinion that a certain demographic of the UK population were not working through choice. Because when I was growing up (also poor) within an immigrant family, I would see cousins coming to the UK and doing literally any job that they could get their hands on, 9 times out of 10, this would be care work. During the last recession, I myself had to go 'wipe the backsides of the elderly' just to get by, and lo and behold, the building was full of Africans and South East Asian staff. Seeing this, then seeing friends and neighbours claiming they couldn't get work was an alien concept to me. It was only after a short stint working at the Job Centre as an Advisor I realised I was pigeonholing too many people. A lot of them had no idea how to manoeuvre the application process, some simply had zero confidence to apply others were struggling with mental health, some didn't realise they could ask for certain hours that would suit around childcare and so on and so forth, for a lot of the time it wasn't simply "ew, I'm not doing that", and that's how I had always felt it was.

No it's not the high fashion, but for basics the quality is not bad and amazing for the price. It now tends to be my first stop if I need some random item of clothing.

I really grew to appreciate Primark as a student. I didn't get a Primark at my hometown until 2015 and I went to university in 2009, so the only time I'd ever shop there was during shopping weekends to big shopping malls, but I often wasn't impressed with the quality of the clothes as I was used to better quality clothes from places like H&M and M&S. Once I needed to start being savvy with money, going to Primark for things like socks, shirts and jeans became a godsend.

Beach / resort holidays. Younger me would have thought it tragic that people would fly to a foreign country to just sit at a beach/ by a pool chilling and drinking beer / cocktails rather than visiting local towns / old ruins or museums. Charity shops. I grew up poor on council estates in the north and would be embarrassed that my parents would need to shop at charity shops. Well if school mates knew they’d take the piss like in the inbetweeners. I’m doing reasonably well now I’m older but I’ve grown a love of charity shops, especially in nice towns, for example I got two kids ski jackets that were both designer makes for £2 & £3 each from Brentwood in Essex, bloody amazing.

I used to be snobby about everything like an edgelord queen. I've mellowed out to more of a 'live and let live and ignore it if you don't like it' stance. One thing I have had a huge schooling in is places. I've lived in some (what have been called by many) absolute shitholes. And yeah, sometimes it's hard to live in places like that. But they all had history and culture and friendly people, and good places to eat. They were places I ended up in dark times, and healed in, with people I cared about. I remember being disgusted once by a comedian who was rude about one of these places on Twitter when they were traveling to appear at a literature festival there. I thought you're ok taking their money and appearing at a *literature festival* but you want to denigrate them by dredging up old stereotypes for some cheap laughs? GTFO So evidently I'm now quite protective/defensive about them!

Divorce. A few years back, I conspicuously avoided congratulating a lad I’d vaguely grown up with when he got married at the age of 23. His parents had divorced when he was about 5 years old, and I suppose I assumed he just wouldn’t have the right sort of outlook on marriage, 🧐, as much as I liked him as a bloke. He’s been happily married for about five years, I think, he’s got a daughter who means the world to him and you can clearly see he’d never have things any other way if it meant not having both of those two in his life. Also, one of my favourite people in my life now got married and divorced before I met him. He gave me so much trust at a time in my life when I needed some trust, gave me so much considered advice when the people closest to me just didn’t understand. I think his first wife was abusive, and I’m so glad he walked away. It’s amazing what you (or maybe just I) deliberately don’t try to understand as a child.

Not now but years ago when we used to bully people for shopping at Netto. I was staying at my cousins for the weekend and on Saturday night his mum needed something from the shop, so we all went out to the shops, I'll be fucking damned if it wasn't Netto.. These people were related to me? I was going to Netto? Wtf. Just FYI.. I had never been to a Netto, I didn't really know why we took the piss out of people for going to Netto either - I was a child, maybe 8 or 9? Maybe 2 years younger but I don't want to say it. Anyway, my flabber was truly ghasted. They sold normal stuff? But it was quite cheap? You had to PAY for your bags? Wtf? This shit is fancy. Sunday morning, we go out to play and some of the neighbourhood kids made some shitty comments about my cousin being a scruff and his mom shops at Netto, that type of thing.. *Enter white knight* what's wrong with Netto? They sell haribo for 50p - this witty retort peaked the interest of one of the kids. 'the big bag?' That stopped the bullying for a few minutes whilst we discussed sweets. Since then, anywhere that sells haribo is alright in my books.

Mine was going abroad and watching the football- I wasn’t really a football fan and always thought it was so uncultured (major snob alert!) but since holidaying with my partner- we always watch the game if our team are playing, and honestly it has made for some of the most fun nights on holiday ever!
