Dads cure all (60’s/70’s) was TCP ( we thought it stood for Tom Cats Pee). It actually smelled worse and dad used to gargle with it every day. Olbas oil/ pastilles- another creation of the devil… Andrew’s liver salts ( my late mum loved these- her liver was fine, though) Our local herbalist was fascinating- barley suger sticks for nausea ( good at ruining teeth too) little boxes of Imps - black pieces of licorice?, coltsfoot rock ( not a clue) , licorice woody stems and many more delights…

Monkeys wee on milk bottles and cans of pop(!). I’m 68 and my late mother passed this gem along. Obviously to discourage me drinking directly from the bottle etc. Thing is, I never questioned it. Admittedly, I was young, but I lived in a big industrial city, where monkeys are rarely seen! Common sense isn’t one of my strong points. Thing is, I passed this “fact “ on to my daughter ( who still hasn’t forgiven me)…

I had a friend who , unlike myself, wasn’t fearful of storms. Her house took a direct hit and as she was washing up at the time, in a stainless steel sink, the lightening earthed (?) there. She was flung away by the hit, but an ambulance was called- her heart had gone into severe fibrillation and it had to be re- set . Not pleasant…

Has anyone found a genuine effective way to stop flies entering your house?

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

UK- so no exotic insects, but im buying one of those electric tennis racquet things. My cats ignore the flies. Flies are definitely getting bolder. Last year, I felt a slight nip on my leg ( bare skin). Bastard fly laying its eggs on me ( maybe im not as healthy as I thought!). Very traumatic and I am very clean ( shower at least twice a day).

Night owls of reddit, what is keeping you up past midnight tonight?

Fell asleep on settee. Woken by my cat yowling at the front window. Opened the curtain to see what had riled her and a little stray kitten on the window sill outside. Poor thing was starving and had pulled food from my bin. It was really friendly, but nervous. I couldn’t bring it in because my cat would have attacked it. I took some food, water and crunchies out for it ( it wolfed it down). It then ran off into the night. Its pretty warm tonight, but I live on a busy street, so I’m now sat up in bed, worrying…

What do you reply when someone says ‘you look tired’?

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

Some people say it to undermine your confidence.(f68) I do actually look tired all the time- mainly because I do too much, am in constant pain ( severe arthritis) and was born with bags under my eyes worse than a bloodhound. Anyone who knows me realises that it is my everyday look.

How do I get rid of rats once and for all?

I’m against the cruelty of poison or traps. A cat is a good deterrent, but like one comment mentioned, it could be squirrels. Whichever rodents they are, you need to evict them from your attic- their teeth grow, so they constantly have to gnaw. This is a hazard for wood and electrics. I speak from experience- we had squirrels in the attic. Advised by council to trap them ( in cages) and release them somewhere safe. My ( very large) cat persuaded them to re locate.

We used to call it NittyNetto. Thought I’d do a big shop there ( about 1995). Trolley full for £24 ( mainly frozen stuff). I’m not a fussy eater, but most of it went in the bin. Nearest thing nowadays is Lidl- can’t stand the place. Aldi is good, though …

I don’t know if it’s where I live, or the effects of Covid, but people seem to be a lot ruder, selfish and pushy .Our buses do tend to get packed and they are hourly, so seats can be a premium. Good manners and the queuing system have gone right out of the window. I’m a pensioner, but I’m afraid to say that its my age group that are the worse …

Can somebody explain the idea of not wanting to wash in the bathroom?

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

( working class, Lancashire). Not many people had bathrooms until the 1970’s/80’s. A lot of the houses where I was brought up didn’t even have inside toilets. A kitchen was a scullery and would have probably only had a stone sink and possibly a basic cooker. It was used for washing body and clothes. No luxuries like fridge, work surfaces or washing machines. The cooking range was possibly within the fireplace. A bathroom would have taken a bit of getting used to- it was a luxury/ novelty for a lot of people…

Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories?

Posted by Top_Mirror211@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 746 comments

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

Yep- my mum was pregnant with me (1958). Says her teeth turned “ to chalk” and had them all removed ( she was in her late 20’s). She could eat etc really well, but they’d fit ( generic?) teeth into the mouth as soon as the teeth were removed ( must have been tough on raw, bleeding gums!) I have a dental palate ( bottom), for teeth removed and despite careful fitting and check ups, I cannot get used to them at all, nor eat with them… Wish I could afford turkey teeth…

Back in the day doctors used to come to your house and do house visits. Do you remember the doctor coming to your house? I'm talking a GP not an emergency response doctor

Remember as a kid ( in the sixties), I had a massive , hard blister on the back of my heel. Doctor came out and told my mam to heat one if her darning needles in our coal fire, until it was red hot at the tip. He then stuck it into the blister to pop it. I was terrified. Obviously I was okay afterwards, but I don’t know if that was the best treatment ( antibiotics were available by then). Doctor was very old at the time …

My doctors surgery was also his home and he had two beautiful ( but vicious) Persian cats that sat across his desk. Not good for people with asthma or allergies. I adore cats, but when he passed you a prescription, one of the cats would whack you with an ( unsheathed) paw on your hand… He did do house visits though ( without the kitties)…

I’m 68 (f)-I think that I’ve mellowed with age. I must have been insufferable in my 20’s with my “pretty privilege “ and thinking that I was the centre of attention.. I prefer my own company nowadays and I’m not a chatterbox. I do have a friend (70) who is totally self centred and everything that affects him is a drama, but I think that some people are always going to have that mindset..

Worked with someone long term, in the civil service. Most nights he’d put a ripped old jumper on, inside out and go to Marks and Spencers to queue up for the food/ sandwiches that they’d hand out to the homeless every evening. Sometimes he’d have loads and bring them back to work to hand out…

I wouldn’t ever one- I’d have to throw it out after one use- yuk! Cant think of a more revolting utensil to have in the house. Its easier to bleach and clean the toilet rather than having a festering, slimy brush marinating in a plastic pot…

Posted by manic_panda@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 87 comments

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

I have on street parking and obviously don’t own the road ( or even a car for that matter). I don’t mind who parks in front of my house- except large white vans. Its fine if they are making a delivery etc, but sometimes, these large commercial vehicles are left for days ( once it was weeks), totally blocking my light and views( I m in a small terrace, so only one window.). I am disabled and sometimes need access. My neigbours are brilliant and nobody “local” owns these vans. Ive put a polite little sign in my window, stating that I sometimes need access, but white van drivers totally disregard it…

Do you have any advice for chronic hay fever sufferers ?

Posted by zhvj@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 35 comments

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

There is a cheap barrier gel from Home Bargains ( looks Vaseline based) that helps. I also use drops ( buy cheaply over the counter) for dry eyes. Just as effective as the expensive ones. When im really bad,I sleep with a wet flannel on my face that filters out pollen and soothes my swollen skin. I had the injections but they didn’t work, so I reckon it’s different for everyone. nb- I didn’t get hayfever when I was pregnant- but that is a bit if an extreme cure! Good luck!

No need to be so rude! I hate golf and the bores that play. It wouldn’t be so bad if it wasn’t televised. I can’t afford Sky etc, so I have to endure it ( along with womens football, cricket, tennis and most sports) on the terrestrial channels. Golf just seems so boring and the amount golfers are paid is obscene. There is no excitement about watching someone knocking a little white ball around, whilst walking. Obviously, on a personal level, if you enjoy it, fine, but I find it’s like watching paint dry….

Apart from the valid reasons already mentioned, I used to have four sugars in my tea and the last mouthful was a disgusting, gritty syrup. In my defence ( I’m a Temu addicted grandparent), the cheapo toys are not much different than the really expensive named brands ( eg Barbie, Polly Pocket etc). All plastic tat. I’ve seen my daughter spend a fortune on the latest fad ( with cheap plastic parts), only for my grand daughters to discard it, so to my mind, you may as well spend pennies rat hee r than pounds…

Appropriate-Bad-9379@reddit

Yes, absolutely. I’m 68, so not an elderly pensioner, but as soon as my eyesight deteriorated ( cataracts) and my medication increased( painkillers and antidepressants), I would not consider driving. There was a programme on tv fairly recently, where this elderly man killed a pedestrian ( his eyesight was shocking). He had no remorse and just wanted to know when he’d get his damaged car back. Yes, definitely- all pensioners should be fully tested after 70. Reactions are slower/ eyesight worsened/ untold medical issues, but they selfishly continue…
