On my drive to work, the second I joined the dual carriageway, the sole of my right foot started itching with no way to scratch until I pulled into work.
It was intense. Took some serious meditation.
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Waiting in for the council to turn up and sort my boiler out. Anytime between 8-4.
Been offered a shift at work, I could do with the hours and I can’t take it because I have absolutely no idea when the council will turn up.
throwrakarooke@reddit
most contractors will send texts to let you know they’re on their way, but as someone who works for a heating company that’s used by a housing association, i can promise you it isn’t easy due to being lumbered with too many jobs and emergency call-outs that take priority. That’s why we can’t give a smaller time slot, as much as I wish we could :( and I’m sorry for that!
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Well tbf the local council usually give you a morning 8-12 or a 12-4 slot but today it was waiting all day. Turned up at 3:35 he had a look and said he needs to come back in the morning as he clocks off at 4 and it is not an easy fix. So still got no hot water. Said I’m at work in the afternoon. Not missing another full days pay.
throwrakarooke@reddit
not to be awful, but those contractors get paid absolute crap so I don’t blame him when he shot off when his shift ended. it shouldn’t be an excuse, and highly unfair on you, but your council should be dealing with these issues and providing an alternative
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Definitely, I get paid minimum wage myself so i go when my shift is over. The council ask us to review every job and I’ve asked them to contact me about this one.
throwrakarooke@reddit
i had a really awful tenant on the phone earlier, it was two minutes before leaving the office. i left, got home and grabbed my laptop and headset from my car so i could contact the tenant the apologise and try to offer a solution (this doesn’t class as overtime, no extra pay. this was just me knowing i couldn’t end the day like that). i’m not going to go into details, but i got screamed at for over 20 minutes and it reminded me that when my shift finishes, it’s finished :)
dinkidoo7693@reddit
Yeah theres no need for that kind of aggressive behaviour whatever their repair might have been. Some people have no people skills unfortunately. It’s just very disappointing that i had to take an entire day off work and wait in with no idea what time they might have been coming and then the issue still wasn’t resolved. I lost about £92 from not being at work and I only work parttime as it is. It’s been sorted now as they came back this morning, it took him less than 10 minutes too. I’m guessing he had a client with a bad attitude before he came to mine or something.
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
That annoys me too. So now I tell them I'm only available between 8 and 12. I don't know why they expect people to wait in all day, why they can't offer appointments times. It's ok if you are lucky and get them call at 8 but that's never happened to me.
terryjuicelawson@reddit
Because some overrun or emergency ones come in I expect so can't be spot on with timings. But a running update would be nice rather that just sitting waiting for a knock all day, as it gets towards the end you wonder if there has been a mix up and they aren't even coming.
throwrakarooke@reddit
i work for a heating company for a particular housing association and you’ve nailed it on the head, emergencies is a huge issue for a lot of contractors as they have to come first
Embarrassed_Park2212@reddit
I have had that a few times, that's why I also give them a time that I'll be at home. I know my council did used to send texts, bit like parcel delivery how many stops before you kind of thing, but I guess they stopped that.
Drath101@reddit
Girlfriend worked for the local council heating/energy people for a while. Mostly just down to total lack of staff and unpredictability of how long a job might take to be honest.
To be fair alot of their clients don't have work and actually can be in all day
anotherMrLizard@reddit
These things are usually down to lack of staff. The fewer people they've got doing more jobs, the harder it is to predict when they'll get to a particular one.

My toddler. He’s woken up and chosen goblin mode this morning. Within ten minutes of getting up he emptied the ball pit all over the living room and sat underneath it saying ‘I’m a turtle’.
theowleryonehundred@reddit
In a similar vein, I have paid a lot of money to my child to get into a softplay today that I've driven to, only for said child to be more interested in sitting on the chairs. We have chairs at home that I didn't need to pay for you to sit on!
panic_puppet11@reddit
I think paying the child rather than the soft play might have been your first error...
bopeepsheep@reddit
This worked with mine: have a long discussion about UK definitions, convince child they are a tortoise and not a turtle, otherwise they will need to go in the bath now. Once tortoise status is agreed by both parties, offer lettuce for elevenses. Explain that cold blood and hibernation will mean wearing of socks & jumper at all times, and a very early bedtime. Express surprise that child is no longer a reptile.
Xtanto@reddit
A tortoise is a turtle as turtle is a group name that induces tortoise.

My parents garden.
There are slabs that have been here since the 80s, they're uneven, weedy, and just muddy in between and around the edges.
Our giant shed right up the back of the garden a foot from the rear fence which then had to be fenced off to stop the dogs hiding, and it's next to a bramble bush creeping up over and around it.
They got a guy to come lay some slabs prior to the sheds arrival, but they're nowhere near the entrance of the shed, and to get to the shed you're better off just using the desire path that my brother and I and the dogs use to get to the part of the garden where you can access the shed...
Oh and the guy who laid the slabs was an actual alcoholic whose breakfast/lunch/dinner was a three liter of cider that he swigged throughout the day, and always showed up with a fresh one in the morning.
Oh and one day I look out the window and it looks like he's died. Turns out he got a bit drunk and dizzy. Then proceeded to vomit up his cider on the grass while working on the slabs.
Well now you have a picture of the garden I hope. Today my dad wanted me to pressure wash the slabs. Immediately I envision dirt flying everywhere and just seething rage building in me as they sit inside in tiktok like children 😂
I refused and went to lay down because this is just one of many many decisions forced upon me from headstrong lovely but idiotic parents.

My new-ish job (6 months in) is great, work from home, relatively relaxing. But my management, despite being extremely knowledgable, is just terrible at teaching how things work or the processes for anything. So you just get stuck flailing around for days trying to figure something out because he just cannot explain it. This has happened today and he's been next to no help at all, so now I'm stuck in the 'figure it out myself' loop again.
As an aside, he also seems to treat everything as a learning moment 'why don't you have a guess how this works?' and I just want to say no, we're not at school, just show me and then I know for definite going forward.

Enjoying a nice quiet walk around the edge of the park with my on lead greyhound (who I’m currently teaching about the world so he doesn’t need to shout at things any more).
We both see movement out the corner of our respective eyes. Two small dogs charging from the park entrance directly towards us.
I went from relaxed to ‘oh fuck’ and Bruce being the big potentially shouty boy he is prepared for war.
To their owners credit they did stop before reaching us and recalled well - but fuck me those seconds when I was expecting carnage did for me.

I used to have a lurcher that was very sweet and liked other dogs, but hated kids. I had to pick the time and place to walk him carefully, and could never remove his muzzle in public. No matter how careful I was, I'd still run into kids occasionally. That would always spike my blood pressure. I did have a toddler make a beeline for him once, but thankfully my loud shot of NOOOO!! that felt like slow motion stopped her in her tracks. That was a heart in mouth moment.

Found a nest in our garden with great tit chicks in it the other day (inside a decorative urn garden ornament). Went out this morning, found one of the fledglings dead on the ground, three of the other four dead in the nest, and a final one clinging on to life. I rescued it from inside the urn, but it died in my hands.
We have rats in our garden thanks to our neighbour who is just dumping all of their household waste in their garden. The rats got into the urn, and tore through the chicks.

There is a more senior colleague who has a habit of responding to my messages with a *Well, akshually... and she's wrong.
I can't respond to all and tell her she's wrong not me, because that makes me look like a petty arsehole. Similarly I can't let it pass, because then people might think she was right and do what she said.
She told me off once for not being careful about copying people in to responses. I had been very careful to include the instruction to which I was responding and nothing more.
I spotted an info sec issue, copied her in for her info, she countermanded it and said we should let it pass. That's not how this works.
If she sent the criticism just to me or even just to me and my manager, that would be alright. But she sends it to all and sundry and I'm totally fed up of it.
Three times in three months. I've asked my manager to have a word with her. He shrugs and says everyone knows she's like that don't worry about it, but today I had to comb through my emails for examples just to prove to myself that I wasn't being oversensitive.

Got my son dressed up for Romans Day. This involved a debate about whether to wear sandals (which hurt his feet but look the part) or trainers. Eventually settled on sandals but put the trainers in his bag so he can change if he wants to. After much faffing with safety pins to keep things in place, we made to breakfast club at 8am, which would leave me a nice 45 mins for a walk before my hygienist appointment, across the road from school. Only as we are getting out of the car, he goes “uh oh”. He’s left his school bag at home. And his feet already hurt. So instead of a walk, I have to battle through the roadworks in town to go home, grab the school bag, and drive back in what is now rush hour. Run to school, wait in line for some other mum to finish having the time of day with the office lady, drop off the bag and run to the hygienist, 5 mins late for my appointment, to be scolded for being late and not flossing enough.

Now the weather has gone cold again, the window cleaner has shown up to clean the gutters which means dragging his machine through the house and leaving the front and back doors open. Freezing.

Waking up was quite an inconvenience, not that I don't want to wake up, just that I'd very much rather I wake up and get up whenever I damn well please.

Got honked out by someone for by making wait behind me a millisecond too long for them at a roundabout to allow a car to actually finish going past me in front.
Got them back though by taking a right turn and not using the middle of the road to wait for the turn and making them wait behind me for 5 seconds, they have me another honk and a middle finger so it worked!

Real life is fine, it’s just work. It’s always work. Today is dealing with an old dude who knows his stuff but is professionally senile - he thinks the business exists for his amusement. He can flip flop between pompous “What everyone needs to do is just find the best thing to do and do it” bollocks and victim “I don’t know, I’m only a small weak boy” with the slick confidence of the truly deranged.
That’s my frustration.

How are there so many shoes in this house?

Had a fall on sunday on my run and pretty badly grazed my leg, arm and hands. Arm and hands healing well but my leg is still stinging and the redness is probably gotten bigger. Can’t go to work and now stuck inside for the second day in a row

My "toaster". Unless you're toasting industrial pap bread I have to turn the dust up to 11 and press the defrost button. Only then can I get a proper slice. 😡

Reddit. Someone left me a nasty comment ( unnecessarily so)…

It's annoying how much it can get in your head. Reddit's a wide slice of humanity, and there's plenty of assholes out there. It says more about them than you.

Waking up to screaming cats wanting food after already waking me up at 5.30 to let them out! (Glass doors and dont have a justifiable £500 spare to fit a catflap! Grr!)
smedsterwho@reddit
Glass doors are a pain, but...
If you have a wooden door, my cat flap was £40, and I carved the hole myself - despite being rubbish at DIY.
My mate fitted his glass door cat flap - cutting glass is not too difficult. Not saying you or I could do it, but someone in your circle might.
Either way, good luck!

Same here. We leave a window cracked open in spring/summer so he can come and go, but he still announces his return at 5am with 10 shrill meows before falling asleep in the middle of us. Cats are little shites
runawaydebt@reddit
Same! 4:30am wake up call, so but of food and trapped him in the kitchen until 7am when I go down. So annoying we do this game every night.

I wad awake at 4am last night proofreading my dissertation. The realisation that my conclusion is deeply shit when I read it this morning has definitely put a damper on my morning already. My commitment volunteer this morning hasn’t helped as my function today requires me to put a decent shirt on. Finally, past me’s commitment to go out for lunch with my friends later today was not a great idea considering that I have been pulling late nights for about a week now.
Don’t do law degrees, and if you do- don’t do a dissertation “because it’ll be easy! I enjoy the topic”… pffff. I have a couple energy drinks and an ibuprofen though- we’ll get through it.

I took a long weekend for annual leave and my inbox looks like a nuclear bomb went off. Two days off and apparently the team can't run without me ffs

Person in front of me driving to work, they stopped to let every single car out of side streets, which would be fine, if we hadn’t just sat doing 20 in a 60 for half a mile then 15 in a 30 for another half a mile and there’s endless queue of traffic behind me

Not being able to sleep. I did sleep for an hour but then something woke me up and that was it. It's an annoying side effect of medication I take. I just lay there. I can't get up because then the cat thinks it's time to go out with the night crew for night time jollies. He's not allowed out at night so then he'll just scream like a toddler, so I just have to lay in bed.

I stayed over at work last night in the on-call accommodation and the other denizens of the flat have done nothing but slam doors all morning. I'm not due in until 10:30 as I was scanning until late last night so I had been hoping for a lay in but apparently not. Let's hope none of their patients need complex scans later as I'm going to find higher levels of concentration a bit tricky on 4 hours sleep.
