So, how are you going to fill your days when you retire?

nchemungguy@reddit

I’m only 52 but kind of setting the stage for when I retire, which right now is planned for age 65. I really enjoy gardening. I have large plots of wildflowers for pollinators, take care of a neighbors property doing a “meadow habitat restoration” as well as the usual vegetables and fruit gardening. Between that, writing and a couple other activities I enjoy, I think I’ll keep busy. And if some days I don’t? That’s fine too!

Non-Alcoholic Beer...

When I was playing out in a band I would bring along some NA beer with me. Every venue we played at was more than okay with it. What I would do is have one or two regular beers and then switch to NA so I was safe to drive home a few hours later. Of the NA beers I've tried, Blue Moon and Guinness were the best.

I turn 52 next week and am in the best physical shape of my adult life. But I have noticed lately that an afternoon of working around the yard and house wipes me out quicker than it used to.

This is very true! When I worked in medicine I worked with a couple of mid-level providers ( NP's in particular ) who I thought were better than many physicians.

I've been on Wegovy since August and am down 47 pounds. I feel amazing and never want to go back. It's not a miracle cure and the people who I have seen not have good results don't put in the work. They still eat like shit. You have to eat right and exercise still. It's not a diet, it's a new way of living... and living better.

We only had two TV channels so I kind of disliked it because it took up one of the channels. But in hindsight, it was a Labor Say tradition. You knew Summer was over when Jerry was on.

My paternal grandfather dropped dead in his early 50’s. My dad almost died at 49 and my uncle, his brother, almost died in his early 50’s. So with that kind of family history I’ve been very proactive about my own heart health. I’ve been on a statin for over 25 years. Established with Dad’s cardiologist who follows me and did a battery of tests including a CT angiogram to see where I’m at. I’ve lost significant weight and exercise regularly. It sucks getting older.

I was a paramedic for ten years. It only happened twice. Once it was an ER doc and the other it was an interventional cardiologist who had us bypass the ER entirely and take the patient directly for a heart catheterization. He was one hell of a doctor.

Colonoscopy in the books!

nchemungguy@reddit

A few years ago I was having some pain that made me think a colonoscopy was a good idea. Doc agreed and I had one. Turns out the issue I was having was not abdomen related, but they DID find three large polyps that, had I waited, could have become a bigger issue. So I had to get one three years later. That was a few weeks ago and except for one small polyp, thy found nothing. So I graduated to every five years. Which is about how long it’ll take to forget the taste of that prep drink. Seriously though, get it done. It’s not a big deal at all and could save your life.

We haven't done it in a while, but Friday nights were often for having a few drinks and watching old music videos. No rhyme or reason to what type of music, just whatever comes to mind. We call it "going down the rabbit hole."

We are at that age we lose more and more

Posted by stromm@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 142 comments

nchemungguy@reddit

First off, my condolences for your losses. I can't begin to imagine what it's like to lose a child. Our friend, who is in his early 70's, lost his wife last January. At the funeral mass, myself and two other buddies sat together, all of us in our early 50's. One of the guys turned and said, "I guess we may as well get used to doing this for a while." It hadn't occurred to me until he said that, but he was absolutely right. We're at that age where we have to watch the generation before us and the one before them, what's left of them, die off one by one, seemingly with greater frequency. It's pretty damned depressing.

Upstate NY here, the closest regional pasta dish to me is “chicken riggies.” It’s rigatoni, chicken and peppers ( spicy or sweet ) in a creamy tomato sauce.

How common is traveling by bus in the US? Do Americans use buses often for long-distance travel?

Posted by GlitteringHotel8383@reddit | AskAnAmerican | View on Reddit | 517 comments

nchemungguy@reddit

I prefer not to. We took a trip to NYC with a group on a bus once. It was nice to let someone else do the driving, but at the halfway point ( about two hours ) the driver would stop and let everyone off. Suddenly we’re sitting around waiting for people to get fast food, coffee, etc when we really would have preferred to just keep going. The bus had a small rest room, so it wouldn’t have been for that.

Has anyone just … walked away?

Posted by broncoangel@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 920 comments

nchemungguy@reddit

One day, going on nine years ago, I finally had enough. I bagged up my belongings and walked off the job. Twenty five years in health care and I walked away from it. And as I did, I could feel the weight lifting off of my shoulders and my blood pressure lower. I had been so miserable that my family was actually HAPPY that I was unemployed. (Albeit only for about a month or so, my second stop on my way home was to inquire about the job I have now. )
