It’s time for the Dr. Demento Show!

In spite of my mother’s objections, I used to stay up late every Sunday listening to Dr. Demento. I got seriously scolded (maybe even slapped) the first time I sang this song out loud. https://youtu.be/sFacWGBJ_cs
What’s your Dr. Demento memory? Drop some links and share some stories.

Poisoning Pigeons In The Park. I used to pretend I was asleep since Monday was always school but I secretly turned my stereo on and listened to it with headphones while trying to laugh quietly.

Oh yes, he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
He scattered cream filled cupcakes 'cross the land
One of life's great big no-no's,
He was reaching for his Ho-Ho's
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
He was a country singer who was eatin' Zingers
As he sang with a red-hot country band
The band was really smokin' 'til the singer started chokin'
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
Yes he died with his Ding Dong in his hand
That last song he sang was really grand
He thought he was the mostest 'til he bit that big fat Hostess
And he died with his Ding Dong in his hand!

In 1988 my roommate Marcus and I did an independent album. It was called The Marcus Ratt - Rainbow Spectacles. He submitted a song from the album called “Goldfish” to Dr. Demento for consideration. It was a silly weird song about loving Goldfish crackers and how sad it would be if you had a sore throat and couldn’t eat them. We were both very young He was 19 and I was 22.
A couple of weeks later the phone rang. I answered it. A very Dr. Demento voice on the other end said, “Hi! Is Marcus there?” I asked who was calling and he said, “It’s Dr. Demento.” I cupped my hand over the phone and handed it to Marcus saying, “It’s for you. Dr. Demento.” He told me to fuck off (he didn’t believe me) and grabbed the phone. I still remember his eyes getting huge when he heard the voice. Dr. Demento liked the song and played it once on that week’s show!! I thought it was cool that he personally called. It is an awesome memory.

I listened to the show every week through 1988. I probably heard it. That's so cool!

I called into Dr Demento to request a song for the top ten and Weird Al answered! I asked for My Bologna and he said “Hey! That’s me!” It was all very exciting.

My brother had a multi-cassette "best of" Dr. Demento set. I should see if it's still with his things before my mom throws them out.

This is the song that kept Ultravox's "Vienna" out of the number one spot in the UK. This and John Lennon's "Woman" IIRC.

Sunday nights, after I was supposed to be sleeping, arranging an old clock radio to best receive a signal from a radio station 90 miles away, all to hear a song about fish heads. Good times.

Now I have this stuck in my head: https://youtu.be/iyz3g3vRb-8 (Note: despite being billed as Felix Figueroa, this was actually Freddy Martin and his orchestra, who also did the US version of "I've Got A Lovely Bunch of Coconuts" with vocal by Merv Griffin, which was also a staple of The Doctor's playlists. )
I was today years old, by the way, when I learned that the lyrics of this street map of Los Angeles were written by Jule Styne.

"Does your chewing gum lose its flavor on the bedpost overnight" was the question on a Jeopardy show. I knew the answer because I heard it on Dr. Demento.

Tom Lehrer. I actually got to know someone in our office because of his songs. I was singing “The Masochism Tango” in what I thought was an empty administration area. One of the budget techs was working late and started laughing. She was glad to find another fan of Tom’s.

Tom Lehrer was a treasure. My college friends and I still quote him to each other. You should check out the Tom Lehrer subreddit sometime.
