Mid 50s guy and saw a urologist the day because been experiencing urine stream issues. Who else was finally at that point in their lives?

He doesn't think there's anything going on other than typical enlarging prostate not occurs with normal aging. Thankfully even up to this point I don't need to get up in the middle of the night to go to the bathroom. Many times I can go hours throughout the day without needing to go. And my stream is nothing like it was when I was 10, 20 or 30 years old it's never really been a major problem. Last few months I'm dealing with the start stopping, sometimes dribbling and just a much weaker stream overall. At 10 I could probably power wash chrome off a trailer hitch. At 50 something I can probably barely get dust off that trailer hitch. Who else is dealing with this eveuntual bane of a man's existence? And on the flip side who else is in their 50s already and literally has not any issue whatsoever in this department?

I doubt it's going to come to that. I suspect when I get my PSA check soon it's going to be on the low side of normal like it was last year and every year previously over the last 5 or 6 years that I've been having a checked with my physicals every year.

It hit me at 60ish. PSA has been climbing gradually for the last ten years. At 6.7 now and my “former” Urologist wanted to biopsy. Had the MRI instead and NOTHING, ZERO, ZILCH. Going for my annual checkup Monday with my new Urologist.

This! I got a 3T MRI and it was negative despite my 4.8 PSA at age 64. Now 68 and the PSA gets checked every 3-4 months and it always between 4.8 and 6.1. Urologist told me if a biopsy was required it would be under gen'l and precisely targeted.

Talk to your urologist about Flomax (generic is Tamsulosin). Within four hours of the first time I took it, it was easier to urinate. It was like a wonder drug.

Used to get up three or four times a night and then started on one Tamsulosin with supper. Now it’s only once a night and if I take an Advil or Tylenol right before I go to sleep, I can sleep all night. Not medical advice, just personal experience.

Oh I was put on flomax over a year and a half ago when I had a kidney stone and I couldn't continue to take it because it was giving me headaches. Just prescribed me an alternative for my situation now and took it for the first time yesterday and the same thing is going on. It's giving me headaches. I'm going to try to cut the dose in half each day and see if that helps with the headaches. If not I either I'm going to have to decide to go with the surgical intervention or finasteride which has we know has its own side effects

I was in the hospital for 24 hours after the surgery with them pumping saline into my bladder through a two way catheter. After I got home, I still had bloody urine seepage for a couple of weeks (had to use male absorbent pads for that). It took about six weeks to fully heal. Things are much better now. To be clear, I had the TURP procedure. Like coring out your urethrae. Pain was handled by meds.

Yeah, its a real problem. Especially the dribbling. I read online to try peeing sitting down. I tried it about a week ago and it worked. Ive been keeping the door shut to piss so the wife doesnt find out about any of this. It's weird and embarrassing.

I’m taking FloMax now which is great for my stream. It’s lowered my BP some (I’m already on two BP meds). I think that can be adjusted some. My PSA has been up and down. I did an EXO MDX test. It came back with an elevated risk for cancer. Scheduled for an MRI in a few weeks, then maybe a biopsy.

Mid 40s (baby GenXer) and around 41-42 I developed a case of prostatitis, which is similar. It's an apparent infection that causes the same symptoms. It was a miserable experience until I got it under control. I take the same medication one would take for an enlarged prostate. Last year it flared up again and by summer I went to PT for kegel exercises lol. Imagine my surprise when the physical therapist explained what these muscles were and then put her hand up my shorts while I "flexed" them 🤣 Believe it or not, strengthening the kegels worked wonders and I'm closing in on a year of being symptom free. I learned so much about prostates over the past 5 years. Every male who lives long enough will experience an enlarged prostate and it's primarily treatable with medication. If things get bad, there are outpatient surgeries to help, but I really do not like researching those. I made that mistake in the very beginning. Just know there are treatments. Also, I found out that antihistamines like Zyrtec and Claritin contribute to enlarged prostates. I've stopped taking those for that reason. Good luck! This is a journey that apparently never ends lol

People don’t get enough warning about antihistamines! Thanks for mentioning that. I’m ok with Zyrtec, but before I knew about this effect I took some Benadryl and could NOT pee even though my bladder was uncomfortably full. I tried again a little later and was able to slowly and dribbly get the urine out, but for a while I thought I was going to need to go to the hospital. When I talked to the urologist about it he was like “yeah, that’ll happen. Don’t take Benadryl or anything containing it anymore.” (Benadryl is diphenhydramine and is also in some anti motion sickness drugs. So watch out when traveling).

Ya this info caused my jaw to drop. I was using Zquil and sometimes advil PM for YEARS prior. Undoubtedly contributing to BPH symptoms. Imagine trying to take something to get a full night sleep to find out it causes bladder and prostate muscles to remain tight. Ugh. Getting old is not for the weak!

Guys really need to talk more openly about this. I had absolutely no idea when this hit. No male in my family ever mentioned this, so I was really glad to see a post in here about it. The antihistamine drop was a surprise to me because I have bad seasonal allergies, so I had been taking them daily for years. I'm still hesitant to even take Zyrtec simply because dealing with this is way worse than dealing with my allergies. Semi related, I had to stop taking Tamsulosin because it made my allergies worse. I switched to Alfuzosin and have been fine.

Flomax reduces blood pressure. My (board certified) urologist says it's necessary if you can live with your reduced stream. There's an alternative, Silidosin, that can weaken erections. Try to live with it if you can.

I started having prostate issues in my early 30's as did my father. Noticed slower than normal urine flow, like the hose was crimped.No abnormal PSA or blockages and digital exams were all good. Did experience improvement with Flomax but it makes you not ejaculate.. in my mid 60's now and recently had an MRI and still holding steady at .04 no other real issues. It just happens unfortunately. And yes, tried most of all the snake oil supplements and nothing really improved.

I went on the flomax a little over a year and a half ago and I had a kidney stone and I had to stop taking it because I was getting headaches from it which is a common side effect with flomax. When I started having stream issues in the last couple of months I tried to flowmax again which has been sitting in the medicine cabinet all this time and again I started getting headaches after I started taking it. Urologist I saw the other Jay prescribe me an alternative to it to try that actually have to pick up at CVS today but this alternative whose name escapes me has that same possible side effect. He said maybe I'll have a different reaction to this one so I figure I'll try it.

I'm sorry to hear that. Typically you will notice flu like symptoms and maybe a headache. If your doctor says to treat the headache it's possible that these symptoms will subside after staying on the medication for some time. Make sure to take this 30 minutes after dinner at the same time each evening.

I tried Flomax a few years back, because I'll get stream issues where I actually have to bear down to get anything other than a drippy trickle out. I learned that I'm one of the people that has a dry orgasm side effect. When I'm on it, there's no ejaculate, and the sensation is majorly attenuated. I tend to live with the slow streams now.

You might be making too much uric acid. Hereditary thing. My Father and uncle would get the kidney stones, and I would get gout. Allopurinol was a life saver for me, but it’s chemical dependency and I wish we lived in a cleaner food world.

Get some Cialis. I had the same issue, it's helped ALOT with stream quality, less drippage no matter how much I shake it.....and, I stay hard way longer than before. All plusses in my book. I take a very small dose, I think the pill is 5mg and I take half a day.

I got diagnosed with prostate cancer at 49. Had some similar issues. Get a PSA for piece of mind. You probably just have BPH (Benign Prostatic Hypertrophy), but what if you don't? Ignoring signs from your body is a no go. I put it off and monitored until the PSA levels and biopsy were just too concerning. At 53 had a robotic assisted prostatectomy. Caused ED. Never had a problem before. Just got a bionic dick put in 3 weeks ago at 56. I'm in medicine and have treated many a men who ignored these issues. Surgeries, radiation, chemo, androgen deprivation therapy, horrible pain. Some have died. I didn't want that to be my fate. All of this has sucked, but I'm cancer free. Get a work up. I'm sure it will be nothing. It's better to find out it is nothing and start on some pills that help with flow (flowmax, etc.) and hypertrophy of the prostate. If it is something, catching it now gives you lots of options. Coming to me at stage 3 or 4 is no fun.

55 and I’ve hit the bladder jackpot. In 2023, a bout of Covid looks to have messed with my receptors that govern the feeling of bladder fullness or urgency. As a result, I never feel more that half full or so not matter how much is packed on there. I can drink a large soda at the movies and not feel uncomfortable as I wait for a lull in the action to hit the washroom, now I can make it through to the end credits and wait till I get home to go. I don’t even have the endless searching for a toilet dreams and never have to get up in the middle of the night to go. I do have to sometimes set a timer to remind me that it might be a good idea to let off some pressure and drinking a lot before bed is t a good idea as I have over extended my bladder a few times resulting in an ultra weak stream. But if I can avoid drowning my kidneys, I’ve got it made.

It’s like disconnecting the check engine light. As long as you check the engine yourself once in awhile you might be ok. It’s a big improvement quality of life wise but I’ll hold off my final judgement pending my death from something other than kidney failure. Worst part was getting a camera up inside my bladder when I was getting the issue investigated. At least now I no longer dread colonoscopies, walk in a park compared to bladder imaging.

49, little under a year and a half ago, started having trouble peeing. Go to urologist, PSA is in the high 20s. Start me on Tamsulosin and check again a month later. PSA is down to single digits but Free PSA was at 7 (anything under 25 is concerning, under 10 is VERY concertning.) 12 core biopsy completed several weeks later, thankfully came back negative. So now I just live with my BPH diagnosis and have a lifetime of taking my pee-pee pills unless I ever decide to go for aquablation which uses water jets to cut a chunk of the prostate out. I'd like to circle back around to the biopsy process for a moment, just so you know what you may have coming... Just wait until the day comes in life where you need a prostate biopsy. They tell you that you may see traces of blood in your urine and semen for a few days after. Blood traces in urine? Try pissing pure blood and even blooping out massive blood clots that turn your bathroom into a scene from Friday the 13th. Myself, I was pissing into a urinal at work and it was splattering all over the porcelain; just as I stepped back when I finished, a coworker came in and saw the carnage. They really should include "Pee sitting down until clear!" in the instructions. But if you think THAT'S fun, just wait until you go to rub one out a few times only to have a fountain of dark, almost chocolate-colored deoxygenated blood-soaked jizz shooting out like Mt St. Cadbury. All completely normal. It took about 8-10 sessions to clear the pipe. The part that really threw me off is that when I made clear to my wife that I wanted to clear the pipes as quickly as possible, she responded saying that there was no need to wait that long if I really wanted! Of course, she also spent several years as an MA in a rehab urology practice so I guess it's not such a big deal to her...

Yeah, it sucks. My doctor put me on Flomax, but I stopped taking it because it may be insanely congested to the point where I couldn’t sleep at night because I couldn’t breathe through my nose. It just takes a lot longer to pee, and I have to get up at least twice in the night to pee.

Yep nasal congestion is a side effect of flomax. When I take flomax I get mild congestion in the mornings but nothing I can't deal with. It's the other common side effect, headaches, that I get from taking it that's the issue. That's why I stopped taking it.

No. But he was not good about going to the doctor unless something was wrong. He's doing well now. Cancer is at bay, but will likely be back. He also tells other men all the time to get their PSA checked.

Not really a solution to a flow issue, but if you have trouble clearing the last little bit of pee in your urethra, (and you’re sick of dripping in your drawers), push up on your taint and the rest will come out. Keeps your drawers dry. Not sure if this is common knowledge. Just thought I’d share.

What was the recovery like for your surgery? From what I read it's one to three days in the hospital and catheterization for a few days but we can take weeks to return to normal activities and one thing said driving isn't even recommended for a few weeks. Can't imagine how driving Rick Ross post surgery problems.

I had the surgery early in the morning and was discharged mid-day the next day. Despite this, it was billed as 'outpatient'. They removed the catheter (fun!) just before I left. I was out from of work for a week, it was suggested to not sit up during this time. The second week was just checking email and coordinating things (I work from home at a computer). The third week was more or less back to normal. IIRC it took another 2 weeks for there to be no blood in the urine.

So, the power washer’s still spraying, but now the plane is flying on a lone propeller. Seem to be out of the woods otherwise, early catch thankfully. Aging is about trade-offs.

Yep that’s how it slowly starts and then the getting up at night to pee starts getting worse and then last year around this time I was having issues sitting an id get weird pains jolting around in my pelvic area. I got a psa that was normal and a digital and the dr said it was slightly enlarged but not bad. He also said it can affect different people different ways bc everybody’s insides is a little different. Anyways I couldn’t tolerate flowmax and he get me on Silodosin and it’s helped a ton.

57. PSA was rising for 3 consecutive test 6 months apart. Biopsy (this sucks) showed the whole prostate 7/8 samples has grade 1 cancer. We observe for now but eventually the time comes for surgery, catheters, ed & incontinence. Meanwhile at least annual biopsies. The future is so bright I gotta fucking wear fucking shades. Bottom line is this is probably not what kills me but it will affect quality of life.

While you may want to dismiss the possibility of something more serious, please challenge your physician. I had a similar situation at your age and believed my doc who said it was nothing to be concerned about. Turns out I had high risk prostate cancer. Since then, I have had a surgery, androgen deprivation therapy and two rounds of radiation - all because I wanted to believe and he didn’t err on the side of caution. These days you have to advocate for your own health. Don’t be like me. My advice: Trust no one and get your PSA checked.

I also have a stricture but have zero idea how I got it. One day I saw blood in my urine and wound up getting multiple tests and seeing the urologist. Ultimately they did not find any real issue with the blood- it went away. They think that possibly a very vigorous low back massage the day before the blood had dislodged a very small kidney stone which caused bleeding. But as a result of all the diagnostic testing, including getting “the scope” my doc says “have you ever had a venereal disease?” Um, no. Or maybe been hit hard in the crotch? Probably too many times as a boy playing sports. Anywho, thank God it’s not surgical. They made an incidental “oh you have slightly enlarged prostate” though I had not had any symptoms. So now I’m on meds to keep things relaxed. Fun times having two people snaking the drain.

I went to the doctor around 50 and was having urinating issues that I never had before and thought that I might have a prostate issue. Doc asks me if I take any antihistamines and I said like what. He said Allegra, Claritin, etc and I told him that I took Zyrtec once a day. He told me that was the strongest of all antihistamines cause you only need one a day. He says to stop taking them for 10 days and follow up with him. Issues went away so now I’m miserable from allergies but no longer have any urinating issues.

BPH seems to have contributed to a hernia, Flomax helped (no longer going every 10 minutes and only emptying 10-20%), and my ultrasound showed high retention that got better with meds, but my PSA is super LOW and there’s really no sign of it from physical exam. Yeah I agree with that. I do find that if I force myself to hold it that it does take more time for things to open up for release. This is especially the case when I wake up in the morning. While I never have a massive urge to go overnight unless I rarely ever have to get up to go I guess my body is still holding it long enough that when I do finally get up to go first thing in the morning is a struggle to get the spigot to turn on.

I was diagnosed with prostate cancer in 2020. I’m 58 at the end of the month. My stream was fine but a routine PSA led to a biopsy which led to the cancer diagnosis. I was lucky to get into a clinical trial at Hopkins because I was local and Covid trashed the applications. Did the treatment (high frequency whole prostate abaltion) and cancer free but my stream strength is terrible. Basically goes straight down! Another bad side effect is I have urgency in the middle of the night even when the bladder isn’t full so I get up and piss anyway. This happens at least 2 times a night. Only way to sleep through is heavy duty sleep meds or a lot of weed. Better than cancer and at least with ED meds everything still works fine.

Yep. One of those things that makes me feel older than what I think I should be. For those of us who can't tolerate some of the side effects of Flowmax, Dutesteride is another in the same family of drugs. And yes, they have sexual side effects, which is another thing that makes me feel older than what I think I should be. At first, it seemed like my prostate was napping during our sexual activity. No.. release. After 4 years, I guess I'm finally adjusting to the side effects. The release is coming back. But another issue is poor blood flow through or past the prostate which effects... size. But hey. One side effect that can happen (I seem to be the poster child for rare side effects) is losing body hair, but gaining head and facial hair. Already had two tumours discovered and removed last year on top of it all... Not growing old gracefully.

Yeah the dutasteride and finasteride are definitely better than that they both treat the cause rather than just treat the symptoms and the bonus is how they help with hair loss and such. Unfortunately for me I'm basically in Norwood 7 on the hair loss scale and the follicles on the top of my head have been dead for so long that those drugs will be ineffective at recovering follicles. But maybe if I do decide to go on one of thise drugs you're at least help me get rid of my excessive body hair which is always been a thorn in my side as well. Of course this assumes that the bad side effects and I think it potentially cause are tolerable.

Yeah, GenX with low PSA. Likely BPH. I know the studies say supplements aren’t supposed to work, but I use Saw Palmetto and Beta Sisterol and they work great for me. The Rx’d drugs have side effects I want no part of. As long as the supplements are working, I’ll take them. There are surgical options as well but the only one I would even consider is aquablation. The others have too much risk for my taste.

I am the wife of a man diagnosed with prostate cancer at age 70. He had urinary symptoms for years and his PCP did little to investigate. By the time he was diagnosed, the cancer had spread to lymph nodes. PLEASE have your PSA checked annually and if you're having urinary symptoms of any kind see a urologist. Ask for a digital exam - a skilled urologist will know right away if something is amiss. There was a shift away from annual PSA testing about a decade ago and, as a result, many men are being diagnosed with prostate cancer at later stages. Educate yourself and stay on top of your health! PS My husband is doing well after radiation therapy. He will be taking hormone blocking drugs for the rest of his life and is monitored every few months to check on the status of the cancer.

No, but I should mention that I’ve actually been urinating less since massively lowering my sugar intake. So it might be hard to judge frequency just from that alone. I imagine I was consuming well over a 100 grams of added sugar per day and now, most days, I’m under 40.

I’m not in a transplant list yet, but it’ll be coming before too awful long, I expect. I always figured I’d die from some funky kind of cancer, based on family history. Eh, who knew

59yr man here. Most of the time, the flow/ pressure of urination is good, but some of the time, i have to move around for the best flow. For me, I think it's lifestyle. I drink and have drugs now and then.

55M. Had my first kidney stone a couple of months ago. 6mm one that got impacted so I had to go through the shock-wave lithotripsy. That was fun...not. The CT scan looking for the stone also showed "BPH consistent with a 55-year-old", whatever that means. I did go on tamsulosin for awhile to try and expel the stone unsuccessfully, but noticed no difference in the stream.

Female here and I’ve had blood in my urine for a year now and it was microscopic and I finally went to the urologist and got a bunch of tests run and they said everything was normal and they couldn’t find anything and sometimes it just happens. It’s best to go get these things checked out, especially at our age.

Cranberry juice is primary benefit is to prevent urinary tract infections. It does nothing to dilate the urinary tract to improve flow.
