Self Checkout

My partner and I are having an open conversation about the use of self checkout. I hate it with the white hot passion of an open flame. My partner would choose a self checkout even if there is an open line with a human being waiting to help.
Do people actually prefer self checkout? I get bugged every time I need to use one.
GeoHog713@reddit
No. Not until they're giving me a discount.
I don't work there
Playful_Question538@reddit
Self checkout all day. I don't want to talk to people. I just want to scan and get the hell out.
seattlemh@reddit
I use self checkout. Most of the cashiers are grumpy and so am I. I'd rather not have to talk to anyone.
UKEE93@reddit
I like self checkout for smaller orders. I don’t like it when I’m forced to use it and it butches about me removing full bags to make room for more stuff. My daughter would use self checkout no matter how big the order.
Bastyra2016@reddit
If I have fewer than what fits in 4 bags I choose self checkout. If my purchases require me to start stacking bags or my stuff on the floor I go to a person. This whole “taking a job away” is only relevant if they aren’t already short people. In my area most grocery stores and fast food places are chronically understaffed. If the live person lane has a person bagging then it’s faster to go with the staffed lane. If I have to bag my groceries after the clerk scans them then It slows me down (in this case I’m unloading groceries on the belt and then running to the end to start bagging then sometimes back to my cart). If I have to do self checkout it’s faster to scan and bag them in one movement.
Alot2unpack@reddit
This whole thing about “self checkout taking jobs” is weird af lol. It’s very difficult to hire and retain cashiers anymore. The pay sucks and it’s definitely not worth the drama. Zero people enjoy being yelled at for the rising cost of food, an expired coupon not being accepted, or whatever else the customer has decided to unleash on an innocent person just trying to do their job! People claim they “enjoy the social interaction”, but then they trauma dump on cashiers and it’s freaking awful. The cashier can’t go anywhere, but also maybe doesn’t want to and need to know that your life is falling apart or your pet just passed or whatever. It’s depressing. Cashiers aren’t a substitute for therapists, but people seem to think they are. Or they’re servants so it’s ok to boss them around and threaten their job if they don’t comply.
The general public is why we don’t have cashiers lol. Self checkout is filling a void. Being a cashier shouldn’t require taking verbal abuse from the public. That’s dumb, but for some reason that’s how customers are, so it’s harder to hire and keep cashiers. Time to learn the self checkout or order curbside.
ShusakuChiba@reddit
What in the fuck are you talking about? I’ve never seen someone be anything but polite to cashiers and you’re acting like they’re the worst treated employees.
Alot2unpack@reddit
They are literally treated so horribly. It’s sickening. I’m not a cashier, however I will help during surge moments. Most recently I was spat at because a customer did not have their credit card in their wallet. Our younger cashiers are often yelled and cursed at for asking for ID. They’re literally kids, they’re going to card everyone. It’s wild! The young cashiers rarely last 4-6 months. Because of the yelling.
ShusakuChiba@reddit
You must live in a strange place. I’ve never seen this. Even when cashiers make mistakes.
Alot2unpack@reddit
I live in the US. Many people are just mad. I think that you might live in a wonderful place if you have not witnessed the aggression that takes place towards employees in retail stores. Wherever you live, it’s a very good place, and you should never leave it.
ShusakuChiba@reddit
I mean I’ve definitely seen store managers catch hell from a customer. Just never a cashier. It’s usually a kid or some elder that’s super friendly.
Alot2unpack@reddit
Store managers are the last line of defense. By the time they are involved, all the ugly has been tossed out. They’re very uninvolved with the front end. There is usually a front end manager (hourly not salary) that may be on duty, and again they’re only called upon after the point of escalation. Customers go from 0-60 real quick. And it’s not always easy to predict it, unless it’s a regular problem customer.
Either way, it should not happen. There is zero reason for one human to act that way towards another. Yelling like a maniac or even raising your voice should only happen if one is trying to alert the other of an immediate danger and threat to their lives! Otherwise, we should all be able to just use our inside voices and nice words to exist.
ShusakuChiba@reddit
I mean if a store tries to screw me out of my money I will have some words for them and they may not be friendly. Being screwed out of your money is not a friendly act
ShusakuChiba@reddit
Notice I did not say anything like raising voice or whatever. That’s not something I can not remember seeing outside of television or movies. But I guess I live in some fantasy paradise or something
Kitterlee@reddit
I love it. But I hate it's replaced jobs for people.
longredbeardpgh@reddit
Self checkout is always my choice. If I can get in and out of the store and never have to interact with anyone I'll take that every time. But I'm an introvert so ...
Lord_of_Entropy@reddit
I cannot stand self checkout. What is worse is when certain stores (Walmart) force you to self checkout and then have a human check your receipt when you leave the store. Not only do you have to do someone else's job, but they are going to make sure you do it correctly.
SwanReal8484@reddit
Spoiler: you don’t have to show them the receipt. Just say no thank you and keep walking.
Butterfly-Wing1120@reddit
It's made me buy less alcohol because I don't want to go to a regular line which is usually so slow...
judgehood@reddit
You don’t have a person who just checks id when you scan alcohol? Like the person who may or may not check your receipt on the way out? It’s made me buy more alcohol because I don’t have some judging me as they swipe it.
It’s just an id check. Alcoholism secured for another day, and I can feel good about myself buying it! /s (kinda).
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
I don't know where they are, but it's illegal to buy alcohol via self-checkout here in California.
jitterfish@reddit
Interesting. Here it doesn't matter if you self check or have a real person. If alcohol is scanned a light comes on, the supervisor comes over and swipes to approve.
djfilms@reddit
That law is state specific… you can buy alcohol in self checkout in Oregon. (But you can’t buy hard alcohol at the grocery store). Trade offs.
sickiesusan@reddit
I’m in a small town in the UK, if it’s someone I like at the till, I will go there to be served. If it’s someone really nice and I have the time, I may even wait in their queue to be served.
Otherwise I’m a self checkout sort of person!
Carnivorous_Mower@reddit
I've worked on tills. I know how self-checkout works. It's faster than waiting in line, unless you have a big load of groceries.
Obvious-Display-6139@reddit
It depends on the situation. At groceries hell no. I'm not being paid to be a cashier. I'm the one paying. Service me!
But if I'm buying one item at a pharmacy then self check out is preferred. I'm not helping sorry.
dirtytounder@reddit
I hate it. The ones at the kroger I go to turned the volume up. Used to be able to mute so it was tolerable.
But it still films your every move from above. And freaks out if you don't have a kroger card.
And really i have to go find someone to type my birthday in if i'm buying beer?
And no paper bags.
I go through the line and deal with a human.
88secret@reddit
I prefer self checkout but the volume thing at Kroger makes me nuts.
PeepShowZootSuits@reddit
Self checkout doesn't have to try small talk with you, so it's an easy choice for me.
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
The ones at Kroger are pushy and rude. “Scan next item” “Bag your item” “If you’re done, select Pay Now”. Robot, quit trying to get me to speed up, I’m not on the clock.
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
Not to mention the ones that loudly announce the price of everything you scan. Now THAT really pisses me off 😡😆
cme74@reddit
I turn down the volume in those things, if I can get away with it. The robot voice is annoying.
Grafakos@reddit
Fortunately, my grocery store's cashiers are staffed by sullen teenagers, so no small talk either way. Downside is that if you're buying booze, you're in for a wait either way.
Sad-Corner-9972@reddit
I’m avoiding self checkout unless it’s just a few items. People don’t realize how easy it is to err and get a shoplifting charge.
MutedMeaning5317@reddit
This is a problem. It is not like you were trained to use the tils. They aren't paying you. Accidents happen and should not result in charges. Fix the problem, yes. Charges no. My 2 cents....
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
I will take self check over a living human any day. I want to be able to control the speed myself. I'm sick to fucking death of those checkers (usually middle aged white guys) who act like they just overdosed on ambien.
I also want to be able to bag the groceries myself.
And i don't want to have to explain what every vegetable is because they've never seen an avocado or a leek apparently 🙄
I used to be a grocery checker myself. We had to memorize all the produce codes before we were allowed to start work. That was like 200 produce codes! I still remember all the ones from the fruit and veg i buy. Now, grocery checkers can't even tell a Brussels sprout from a fucking pommelo.
I'll do it myself and it'll take half the time!
ms_slowsky@reddit
What’s 3632?
RealCrazySwordGirl@reddit
Not a thing we had in Alaska at that time 😆
But i can give you 4068, 4062, 4067, 4664, 4011, and 4093 if you like 😄
AshDenver@reddit
What is 4889, besides being the most common produce I buy?!
wtfw7f@reddit
Here’s the deal. I don’t like self checkout because it takes away jobs. But I use it all the time because the checker and the bagger can’t give two shits about keeping my groceries damage free. Fruit is just flung down the conveyor. I picked out fruit that wasn’t damaged and now they just damaged it. Self checkout means I bag it myself. And when I bag groceries I can fit all my groceries in two brown bags while the official bagger would put it in 12 plastic bags.
Environmental-Car481@reddit
Honestly, I’m not sure it actually takes way more jobs. I see way more people on the floor. Usually people who are shoppers. They definitely know where things are when I ask. I’d rather them help me with that than have no one on the floor to ask for help and have someone check me out which I’m perfectly capable of doing myself. I know some people look at it as the store doesn’t pay you to do the work. I look at it as my time being too valuable to wait in line.
InsertRadnamehere@reddit
I would rather someone have a job. So I never use self checkout.
Universally-Tired@reddit
I don't trust them to bag my groceries correctly. Peanut butter only goes on top of bread unless there is jelly involved.
Dare2BeU420@reddit
This made me smile 😂
Universally-Tired@reddit
Then my day is complete 😃
iceroadtrucker2010@reddit
I scan and use self checkout. I hate the way store employees bag groceries.
warrior-flock@reddit
I prefer self-checkout
88secret@reddit
I love it. I bag my own stuff the way I want it and I know which bags need to go into the house first. And it’s easier to watch the prices and make sure the sales ring up. And as far as the impersonal aspect of it—at my grocery store, there are always a couple of employees around the self checkout, and a security guard. I know all the ones who work in the hours I shop—we chat about our families, share pics of kids, etc. Sometimes it’s more socialization than I want on a quick store trip.
redsfan1970@reddit
I find the less interaction I have with a human the better. Team self checkout all the way.
Hebshesh@reddit
You must be a peach at parties or other social gatherings. Shame society has come to avoiding social interaction.
redsfan1970@reddit
You are a better person than I am if you enjoy random encounters with cashiers. Good for you.
damnfoolbumpkin@reddit
You're the kind of judgy & unpleasant person that we're trying to avoid, hence we don't attend said social gatherings.
Hebshesh@reddit
I am quite the opposite. If I see you or anyone in public, I'll smile and say hi. If you're at a bar, I'll buy you a drink. And yes, I AM judging you on your social awkwardness. I was once like you. Touch grass. Find sunlight. Live to meet people.
cme74@reddit
Allll...the..way...
5GAIBtoM@reddit (OP)
😆
Dare2BeU420@reddit
I prefer self checkout at the grocery store. Mostly because I can bag things the way I want and don't have someone creeping their cart so close to me i can't unload everything onto the belt and then they hover while I pay. That is one thing I actually miss about social distancing. I think its common courtesy to leave at least 2 ft between us while I'm finalizing my purchase
ween0503@reddit
I prefer them. I talk to people all day long at my job. I enjoy self checkout, run the groceries, bag them and pay without saying a word. In and out. 👋 👋
ChrisBourbon27@reddit
I adore self checkout
TXtogo@reddit
I prefer a person
emmadonelsense@reddit
I hate it as well. What’s next? I have to stock the shelves before I shop? I don’t fucking work there and using them would also feel like I slapped a human cashier. If I had my choice, I’d bring back baggers too. Only one of my local stores has managed to not piss me off; they never jumped on the self checkout band wagon and they also never got rid of baskets, for those who don’t want/need a cart.
Yummy_Castoreum@reddit
When it was new, I hated it on principle. Throwing people out of work and making the customer do their job, boo!
But now I guess I hate people even more, because I use it almost every time.
Due-Bumblebee3687@reddit
When it was rolled out, I worked at a Kroger. It made life in retail better. We processed customers faster. We had less instances where cross trained employees had to abandon their tasks for swells in foot traffic at the points of sale. No one lost their job.
SquirreljamASE@reddit
As a sahd thats at the grocery at least once a day, I love self checkout, way quicker and more efficient. I can see how older folks (but I’m 58) and infrequent shoppers might not, but I can get through way quicker. I use apple pay and know the main veggie codes so I can be in and out with a dinner’s worth of food in a couple mins. And, since I’m there daily, I’m never dealing with a large number of items where I have to go thru regular checkout.
MMB_LLMN@reddit
What is a sahd?
doglady1342@reddit
Stay at home dad.
MMB_LLMN@reddit
NightGod@reddit
A sahm, but without the uterus
MMB_LLMN@reddit
So, what I wish I could be at least 50% of the time.
This is GenX. These are homes with both parents working, or divorced but "still friendly co-parents".
I am the former, for now.
TuesGirl@reddit
Stay at home dad
Office_Zombie@reddit
Using self checkout is taking away someone's job.
I don't use it unless there is no other choice.
Due-Bumblebee3687@reddit
Self checkout isn't any more job stealing than online shopping.
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
🤷♀️seems like a given that if a person is in a physical store trying to choose between cashier and self-checkout, they've already made that first decision.
FBS351@reddit
Use them every chance I get. I'm good at it, so rarely have technical issues. No one is in front of me asking for a price check, or trying to find exact change in their purse, or just chitchatting. I want to get the fuck out of there.
slayer_7006@reddit
Between AI and ridiculous people wanting $30/hr to work menial jobs, we won't have to worry about this for too much longer. Most of this stuff will be automated in 5 to 10 years.
fernsie@reddit
I have no problem people being paid a living wage.
Ok_Transition7785@reddit
Doesnt do much when theyre all replaced.
slayer_7006@reddit
Paying people ridiculous wages for low skill work is only going to get them automated out of their jobs and stop people from affording the goods and services they produce. That's why a burger at McDonald's is like $13 now and half of these restaurants are going under. There was an article recently about CA's minimum wage law having the opposite effect of what they intended: less jobs/hours for employees and drove costs up. If I'm an employer and my payroll costs double, I'm not taking a paycut, prices are going up. Then your minimum wage still doesn't buy anything, duh.
nobody2008@reddit
If the cart is full, especially with some produce without a barcode 100% I am looking for a checkout with a cashier. Self checkouts are good for 5 items or less, but they are also problematic with their uncalibrated sensors and stuff.
Few-Pineapple-5632@reddit
I dislike it a great deal but use it if I only have a few things and it’s gonna be faster. My twenty something kids always choose self checkout.
Optimal-Ad-7074@reddit
fucking hate it.
I'm a dedicated introvert but that doesn't mean I think the systematic depersonalizing of everyday life is a good thing. in fact I probably resist it because I know that self-isolation impulse so well.
it needs to be managed. I take it as self-evident that inability to handle even trivial interactions with other humans is evidence of a problem.
Impossible-Nose3504@reddit
Only if I have 10 or less items.
ZogemWho@reddit
I look at the lines and determine which will get me home sooner.. no drama, just efficiency.
altairstarlite@reddit
For a few things, I always self checkout. If I am spending a bunch of money, I feel like the store should do it. (Plus, I hate bagging)
WoodPig25@reddit
Love the self-checkout. It's almost always faster and I don't have to talk to anyone.
rentedlife@reddit
I have to bag my own stuff. I have lost items due to someone who doesn’t care if my soft item is squished by a heavy one.
sleeg466@reddit
I hate it and avoid it as much as possible. My husband loves it and avoids the cashier lane as much as possible.
Due-Bumblebee3687@reddit
I'm introverted, and I can do it faster than the 17 year old new hires in the summer. I like it. Also the lines are faster.
digadigadig@reddit
I hate it too. When the store pays me to be a cashier maybe I’ll change my mind. Until then, I only use it when absolutely forced to do so. Bad enough the damn thing is not set to maximize convenience but to minimize cost and theft. Every other scan is the machine accusing you of not putting your item in the bagging area.
Sensitive-Issue84@reddit
I won't use one. People need jobs. I do not work for that store. I will wait.
Five_String_Serenade@reddit
I refuse to work for free.
TonyStark100@reddit
In return you don’t have to talk to an employee and you can pack your own groceries!
abesapien2@reddit
Yes. I’m faster than most checkers.
Ok_Peanut_6919@reddit
I will NEVER use self check unless I get employee discounts!
melonfarmermike@reddit
and invited to the staff xmas party!
ofthedarkestmind@reddit
I hate people, so I love self checkout. I want to bag my own stuff and know where it is. I can check to make all the prices are correct. And I sure as hell don’t need some cashier making comments about what I’m buying and touching my stuff.
yeahyeahalwayslate@reddit
My area moved to reusable bags before COVID hit then when it did the stores had customers do their own bagging unless they were using paper or newly purchased paper bags.
Totally understandable, essential workers needed, and one thousand percent deserved, every possible protection.
That pushed me to use self-checkout more and more.
Sadly I became too used to my own bagging and completely annoyed by anyone else’s that, well…yes, I absolutely prefer self-checkout.
It also made me a better shopper, to make sure I grab the right amount of bags I need to make sure I have a plan so I wing it less and don’t buy as much unnecessary crap.
Because I have a plan of what I need, I plan my route through the store.
As I grab my groceries, I’m organizing them in the cart for how I’ll want to bags them, which makes my checkout faster and more efficient.
If we landed back in a time of the artful baggers who organized things in a sensible manner and balanced the weight of everything, then I would rush right back into the long lines.
CriscoWithLime@reddit
And putting cleaning items in with food.
mynamesv@reddit
I use it every time it’s available
heartwoodhoney@reddit
It depends on my mood, or the vibe at the store. Or who the cashier is. Generally I prefer an actual human to interact with, and over the past year, I’ve made friends with a couple of them. I’m not going to lie, it freaks me out that there may not be cashiers in the future. And, sometimes self checkout is a lifesaver I’ll admit. Love that you are talking about it. It does seem like a hard job, but I’m an introvert and would turn into a zombie an hour into my shift at the register lol
UmbertoEcoTheDolphin@reddit
Always self-checkout when available.
Any-Highlight-9145@reddit
I love the self checkout. I’m a stickler for how groceries are bagged so it’s just better for everyone if I do it all myself. lol
Crazy-Smile-4929@reddit
Yes. Partially for less interaction. But more because they tend to be quicker for small loads. If I had a lot of stuff, will o the checkout. Easier for loading and unloading.
In Australia, it feels like self checkouts are meant for the X Items or less style interactions.
catsarefriendshaped@reddit
Gen X here. I hate people so prefer self checkout
andyr072@reddit
As someone with social anxiety I prefer self checkout when it's available. I do agree with many here that self checkout does take jobs away from people but I have to do what's more comfortable for myself mentally.
Alarmed-Idea2322@reddit
The less human interaction the better.
Dependent_Top_4425@reddit
I agree. This is why I order groceries on-line and have them dropped of right outside my door! Sometimes I love living in the future!
Sciby@reddit
It’s fine. Lots of countries have customers bag their own goods anyway.
jitterfish@reddit
Yeah that's been normal in NZ my whole life. You used to be able to choose to pay more (eg more expensive supermarket) and get your stuff bagged. Now NZ is single plastic free nowhere bags your stuff. You bring your own bags and do it yourself.
RotaryRich@reddit
I’m for the scan as you shop and check out by scanning your phone. I’d prefer not to self check if I have to scan my shit at the register.
lovjok@reddit
I don’t mind it when I only have a few items but when I have a full cart I get so angry and frustrated!
cutsryd@reddit
J/K 😅
I go often, less than 10 items and am proficient. Some struggle hard.
marvi_martian@reddit
Self checkout is just easier and faster. I have tried to go through a cashier line to help keep people employed but they're slow and there's always some problem. I feel like I'm getting punished for trying to help them keep jobs. Self checkout is amazing.
NightGod@reddit
I go a step further and use scan & go. One less interaction I have to deal with and gets me out of the store faster. Usually I get in-home delivery, though, because that way I can still shop at 2AM and then wake up to groceries delivered and put away for me when I sleep in
schadenfreude317@reddit
I will always use self checkout. My stuff gets packed logically and in the right bags. Last time I had to use a manned checkout the chick put my cold stuff in the non insulated bag and my washing powder on top of mandarins in my insulated bag. Also I don't have to talk to anyone. Win. If people don't like it, that's awesome. Less of a queue for me.
Ok_Entrepreneur_8509@reddit
I love it so much! I get along much better with computers than with people, and I get to pack my bags the way I want. I will only get in a line with a human checker if the self-check line is super long.
Except for Costco. Those guys are so efficient, if I have a lot of stuff, I will prefer to get in the line with a human. Since they don't have bags, it doesn't matter quite as much.
I hope those of us who prefer it make it so the lines are shorter for those of you who don't.
glurbleblurble@reddit
LOVE IT. I don’t want to make small talk with a bagger or anyone else in line and I want my stuff bagged how I like.
ecsutton3@reddit
either works fine. I do prefer self-checkout because I don't want anyone else touching what is now (in my mind) my shit. Nor do I need a running commentary on what I'm buying. And I don't bag it weird and bruise the produce or crush the bread!
babayagaparenting@reddit
Do you have any idea how many people have touched that stuff before you put it in your cart???
ecsutton3@reddit
yes, I was a stocker for years. I don't want any more touching it than needed.
curiousme123456@reddit
I hate it. So let’s get this straight;
1. I have to drive to ur store
2. Shop for items myself
3. Pay for the stuff on an after tax basis
4. Bag it myself
5. Drive home
6. Unpack it
And now you want me to be a cashier to when I AM THE CUSTOMER!
babayagaparenting@reddit
I hate it. I’m an assistant manager at a grocery store and people are unwilling to wait for one customer to finish in the line before them and immediately get antsy and go to self checkout. Then they complain because it isn’t as fast as a cashier, the computers expect you to behave in a predictable way and when you don’t it alerts, they can’t ring in their own coupons or rain checks and they have to wait to be cleared on alcohol purchases. I have had so many people get mad at ME, because they don’t like the self checkout, but they walked past two or three cashiers to ring themselves out. It’s not my fault you wouldn’t wait in line for a few minutes and aren’t capable of using the terminals. Don’t yell at me!
Capital-Meringue-164@reddit
Your job sounds like a daily hell, I’m sorry people are a pain!!
pakrat1967@reddit
Self checkout is basically like the 10 items or less lanes. Fine for a bag or two amount of items. Beyond that and the scanner gets hung up cuz it thinks that you're shoplifting. Then you gotta wait for an employee to reset it.
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
I don't work there, so no way I'm using self checkout.
Electronic-Isopod680@reddit
To each their own. I can run the self checkout way faster than the apathetic teenager behind the til. Also the self checkouts don't give me a confused look when I pay with a $20 and change two get whole dollars back.
blankdreamer@reddit
I don’t like the way they have taken entry level jobs away and less human interaction and more profit for greedy supermarkets. But they do speed things up.
TheCenterOfEnnui@reddit
Prefer it. It's quicker to do it myself.
blondvet@reddit
The self check out at my favorite grocery is a small area with a ton of registers. So there are always lots of people in a small space. These days, I do 90% curbside pick up to avoid it. If you’re going to get rid of my cashier, then someone is going to have to shop for me.
Fickle-Princess@reddit
I don't work there and don't get a discount for self checkout but I have all the responsibility if something rings up wrong or gets missed. No thanks. I stand on the side of the workers that will keep losing jobs if we don't wait in lines for them.
atxwendy@reddit
Hate self checkout. Inevitably something won’t scan or it thinks I added something extra to the bagging area, and I have to summon someone for assistance, so it seldom ends up being faster.
For me it ranks right up there with automated water faucets. “WHY CAN’T YOU SEE MY HAND?!?”
avrus@reddit
While there are times I prefer self checkout, it is labour theft and nothing anyone can say will convince me otherwise.
jcsnipes1969@reddit
If you are going to force me to self check out, the I should get a discount based on what you aren’t spending on employees.
SubstanceNo1544@reddit
If im there to grab coffee and creamer.. im hitting self checkout. If im shopping, i hit the line. Like others have said i like to support one of the last liveable wage jobs that doesnt require a degree.
NotMyLamp@reddit
I only use self. I like to pack my own groceries.
atomlowe@reddit
If there is an open cashier, I'll go there. But if I'm picking up a couple things that would normally be through the "Express" cashier and they don't have that, I'll do self checkout.
What i hate about self check is when it's a family event and the kids take turns scanning stuff. Taking way too long and way to much space.
BravestBlossom@reddit
Effing HATE self Checkout. I will wait in line for a real human.
killslikeaninja@reddit
It really depends on the day, the lines, and my mood.
whistlepig4life@reddit
Love self check out.
Icy-Pop2944@reddit
I only use self checkout when there is no human option. I will wait in line for a cashier because a) I will not participate in removing one of the few remaining decent jobs primarily occupied by unskilled women and b) I don’t work there.
FriendRaven1@reddit
Don't use them at all. Each one is a person who doesn't have a job. F''k those machines.
auntieup@reddit
Sometimes I’ll grab a bottle of wine just so I can’t check out at a machine.
StrawberryMoonPie@reddit
I prefer it. Less peopling. (I’d have my hair cut online if I could.)
tunaman808@reddit
I use self-checkout almost exclusively. I hate small talk, and at most of my local stores (except Aldi), the cashiers are as slow as Christmas.
otbnmalta@reddit
I hate them because it takes jobs away from people and it doesn't save anyone but the company money.
St1ck33@reddit
This. Someone in an office somewhere is looking at the data to decide if they can layoff cashiers.
I want people to have jobs.
jacqleen0430@reddit
I like using them because the line goes more quickly and I don't normally have a lot of items. I HATED working self checkout, though. I worked at a big orange box store and that was the absolute worst. Trying to watch a register that faced away from customers, being called to find a skew number for one screw, then others walking out while your back was turned. Absolute hell, lol
UnderstandingWeak292@reddit
Self checkout for 20 or less items is generally my preferred option
TabuTM@reddit
I’m a person who loathes small talk with strangers. So self checkout whenever possible. The tech still sometimes glitches but it’s way better than when they first came out.
uberphaser@reddit
If I have 4 things I go to self checkout. If I have a half full cart I go tk the person lane. Everything in between is a call in the moment. Whatever will get me out faster.
VendaGoat@reddit
I honestly don't care.
It's a math equation of time for me.
RebaKitt3n@reddit
I prefer it. I’m much faster, I know how I want things bagged and I don’t need to talk to anyone.
IDunnoReallyIDont@reddit
Introvert here. Self check ALWAYS.
brooos60609@reddit
Introvert here, too. I hate self checkout because there is always some technical issue and I need to find someone to reset it. Every single time. Also am of the opinion that if we keep using self checkout they'll take away all the live cashiers and then we won't have a choice.
Bosongza2@reddit
I will do self checkout every time. I don’t want to make fake nice conversation, I don’t want to be upsold on some random credit card, and I don’t want somebody doing a shitty packing job. I just want to deal with my own groceries, pack it the way I want it, and get out with as minimal interaction as possible.
Mudcreek47@reddit
Either but I hate going self check out with a cart load of groceries and/or alcohol. Gotta wait forever for someone to come over and clear the alert
No_File1836@reddit
I only use self check when it’s convenient for me like I’m just buying one thing and it’ll be faster. But, otherwise, I don’t get paid to be an employee. If it gave me a 10-15% discount without them marking up the prices first then I’d do it.
ThrenderG@reddit
Sounds like a skill issue.
FrozenVikings@reddit
I don't get the hate. Why do I want to stand in line behind someone else and wait? I can just go up to the thing, scan, pack, pay and leave. It's faster every single time.
Walmart self checkouts are fast as fuck, dunno what magic they use but those machines scan everything instantly. Other places can be iffy.
Best of all is online ordering and home delivery. Goddamn are we getting the most out of our $39 a year for Walmart. Just saving money on gas and non-planned shopping (oooh a kitkat, well I did walk five minutes this morning).
GestaltWitch@reddit
The only thing I can’t stand is “please put your item on the checkout area” and I’m like “I did it’s just freaking light as a feather computer lady!!!”
When I don’t feel like interacting with a human I do it, but usually I have too many items. I’m also tempted to steal a plastic bag now and then say I used two bags when I really use three (rebel, I know) partly to just see if anyone notices, but I haven’t done it.
Ruenin@reddit
I hate with the fire of a thousand suns when people think they should use self checkout for a while vast of groceries. It's supposed to be for quick in and out, ya self-centered bastards.
BertaRocks@reddit
You made that rule up. There is no “10 items or less” sign.
Ruenin@reddit
There used to be. Sorry you're not old enough to remember. That said, you shouldn't need to be told to leave the self checkout for people with a few items. That's just common courtesy.
BertaRocks@reddit
Just because you have decided self checkout should be express lanes doesn’t make it fact.
Hungry-Treacle8493@reddit
I do not do self checkout unless it is the only option. I will happily wait in line.
hamish1963@reddit
If it ever becomes the only option at my local market I'll stop shopping there.
Momo222811@reddit
It depends. Sometimes Im just not feeling people, and just want to avoid interaction or I have one or two items. Some stores just have cashiers that are unpleasant. In some other stores I always use the cashiers because they are nice and don't squish my bread.
Artios-Claw@reddit
Very simply, I avoid self checkout be because I’m doing a job someone else could do to support their family
trpclshrk@reddit
….if almost any customer service type position could “support a family” or even “A PERSON” I wouldn’t spend 12 hours a day fantasizing about revolutionary things.
Artios-Claw@reddit
Fair enough, it’s just my tiny rebellion
trpclshrk@reddit
It’s a nice sentiment, no offense meant. I just wish I felt it were true
Creative_Explorer123@reddit
Nope. No. Not at all. I do not like self check out. I do not use self check out.
I like people. I’m ok with things taking time. I don’t mind being in line and talking with strangers. I think that’s good for us. Not sure it’s heathy for us, as people or as a society, to be in a hurry all the time or to feel too burnt out to spend a few minutes interacting with others. I also like people to have jobs.
phillymjs@reddit
At most places, I'll only do self checkout if I'm running in for just one or two things. If I need a bag to carry what I'm buying, I go to a cashier.
At a convenience store, though? Self checkout every damn time, because I hate getting stuck in a line while someone in front of me takes forever to guide the cashier to the exact obscure brand/type of cigarettes they want. They should put laser pointers on a chain at the damn counter so they can just put the red dot on what they want.
EggieRowe@reddit
I love them in most places. The less peopling I have to do the better and I’m faster.
hamish1963@reddit
I will stand in line forever before I use self checkout.
surfinbird@reddit
I use self checkout 90% of the time
Ottomatica@reddit
Depends on the load. Unlike other people here, I am slower.
Fritzo2162@reddit
I love self checkout because I'm 50x faster than any underpaid cashier.
mom2artists@reddit
I like self checkout for a number of reasons and I’m also ashamed that I’d rather do it myself 😕
mammajess@reddit
I DID prefer self checkout. BUT just recently the experience changed. Now it's like cattle being led through a gate, except the cattle are also suspected of stealing. I don't expect staff to look overjoyed to be at work - I've worked in supermarket hell too - but why do they look at us like prison wardens look at those they care for?
So, I did originally prefer self checkout because I am introverted and my job is very social. I don't want unnecessary fake conversations in my free time. But now I'm just going to do delivery as the in store experience is so overwhelmingly unpleasant.
HackedCylon@reddit
I hate WalMart self checkout. Every single time the AI thinks I'm shoplifting and I have to wait 3 or 4 minutes for a bored overseer to wave their ID card at it so I can pay and leave.
However, Sam's Club Scan and Go is stupendous. Scan my items with my phone as I take them off the shelf, slide to pay, then bypass the cashier line and breeze out the door. I don't know why anyone doesn't use it.
Longjumping-Case-174@reddit
Upon reading the title I did not understand this post was about grocery shopping. I’m glad it is.
Quirky_Might_8780@reddit
Yikes! You okay?
MartinMcFly55@reddit
I think that's also a conversation that should be had.
lrhouston@reddit
Going to a live cashier is an absolute last resort for me. At self checkout I can scan my things faster, watch for mispriced items easier, bag my items the way I want, and best of all, I don't have to talk to anyone!
red08171@reddit
Wife doesn't like people and I loathe people bagging my shit. So groceries are always self checkout unless I have a ton of shit.
rokken70@reddit
I always do self checkouts. Get my stuff, in and out like a ninja!
Educational-Dare2484@reddit
Yep
Ok_Transition7785@reddit
Self checkout all the way every time. My nightmare is having to interact with people, especially people these days in a society with no social cohesion in an increasingly low trust society.
Delicious-Disk-122@reddit
The last thing I want to do is shop, so self checkout is a hard pass. If I could have it my way, I would board some sort of vehicle and point to my items, pay as they bag, and, hell, have them put the items away in my kitchen/home. Only reason I need to be in a store is I’m picky about items.
kevbayer@reddit
Depends on how much stuff I'm buying.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
Right? I'm clocked out. Someone else is getting paid to ring up my order and bag my large grocery haul.
CittaMindful@reddit
I REFUSE to use self checkout under any circumstances. It kills human jobs and Im not getting paid to check my own items out.
Impressive-Shame-525@reddit
That's me. Unless I'm getting an employee discount... No.
k_m_worker@reddit
Self checkout all the way! No one bags my items better than me!!
overeducatedhick@reddit
I suspect the introvert/extrovert distinction has something to say about this.
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
I'm an introvert but it's a mixed bag for me. Sometimes it's convenient and sometimes it's not.
At Sheetz or Wawa, I often do the self order and checkout.
My local grocery store though, I always go through the human check out. I want someone with bagging experience to bag my eggs and produce. And I want a cashier to ask if Inwant to donate the suggested items to the food bank. And I frequently see older Gen X cashiers working there they're nice to me and I don't want to take their likely supplemental jobs.
sometimesnowing@reddit
My first choice is click and collect. Someone else does my shopping for me and the items are already paid for. At my supermarket you push the buzzer, give your name, grab your groceries. Easy. If I'm popping in for milk or some small thing, I'm always choosing self serve. No queue, no chat. In and out. Easy.
Unable_Gap_504@reddit
I personally would never allow anyone else to select anything that doesn’t have an expiration date, especially anything fresh.
darkest_irish_lass@reddit
Especially fruit and veg. I'm very choosy about that and meat.
sometimesnowing@reddit
Same, meat and fruit / vege I'm very particular but these guys do an excellent job. There's a space for notes so you can request green bananas or unripe avocado or whatever. If I want to choose a lamb roast myself then I'll pop in and get it same time as pick up
sometimesnowing@reddit
Yeah nah, they have an excellent track record for getting it right. Often the fresh fruit and vege have been selected from out the back, the freshest deliveries. I'm really picky about about what I choose and I've not been unhappy yet
LeeKinanus@reddit
It really depends if im buying lube or not.
ThrustingBoner@reddit
I checkout faster than any cashier and there’s fewer people handling my food.
michelepixels@reddit
I love self checkout because it’s often faster. However, sometimes I’m tired and/or I have a lot of items and I’m grateful there’s a human option to do the job for me.
ZweigleHots@reddit
Team self-checkout. I already spend 40+ hours a week engaging with the public, and my introverted ass just wants to check my crap out and go home without making polite small talk with the poorly-paid cashier whom I know full well does not actually give a crap about my day.
But I also understand that some people need that interaction. Which is great. I just don't want to get stuck behind them waiting impatiently for the niceties to end.
funmaster320@reddit
This is me. I am surrounded by people for 10-12 hours a day at work and I am done with people by the time I get to the grocery store. Same reason I will take more time to interact with retailers via chat via just picking up the phone.
CABGPatchDoll@reddit
I prefer self checkout. I love not having to deal with other people. I'm a nurse and and I'm thoroughly exhausted by other humans.
Oldschoolgroovinchic@reddit
I prefer it.
More_Law6245@reddit
They definitely have their time and place but what I despise is being forced use them with a full trolley of groceries. Where I shop they have done this on numerous occasions because they didn't have enough staff scheduled at the time to be on the check outs.
Expert_Habit9520@reddit
If it’s just a few items, self checkout is great. If it’s a whole bunch, I prefer the human combo of one scanner and one bagger. I still the think the human combo is the better option for larger quantities of items or anything trickier to get scanned.
Cold-Pizza111@reddit
This is the way
twitchykittystudio@reddit
Depends on my brain that day and how much I’m buying. Drained? Grumpy and don’t want to talk to anyone? Feeling generally unsociable? Self checkout all the way.
Too much to justify self checkout? Depends on how long all the lines are.
I should order for pickup more…
cjc4096@reddit
They don't train bagger anymore. Too many things crushed / destroyed.
jbenze@reddit
No one has bagged my groceries for at least 20 years. If I’m bagging them myself, I might as well scan them too and just be done and out of there.
TXHaunt@reddit
Self checkout. The fewer people I have to deal with, the better.
Squiggy226@reddit
I like self checkout but even more I like scan as you go at my local supermarket. Huge time saver.
No-Elk-6200@reddit
Gen X is the last generation to use human checkouts.
Derfargin@reddit
Same
JudgeJuryEx78@reddit
Huh?
Cysteine_Chapel64@reddit
I hate it because paradoxically it can be slower. The only reason I use it because some of the local grocery stores enshittified their grocers to the point where they typically have one to two lanes open during the middle of the day (midnight or post-rush hour shopping I'd at least understand this) and the express lane has gone from the endangered category to extinct.
Infamous-Lab-8136@reddit
Vastly prefer them myself
I worked at Home Depot when we rolled them out though, so I understand several things about them from both a usage and a corporate standpoint that make them not bother me
Only time I dislike them is if I've got an order that is too large to try and put in the bagging area all at once, then I'll use a checker and wait for them
jbenze@reddit
Wait 20 minutes for a cashier to scan my stuff so I can bag it myself or scan it myself in 2 minutes and put it directly into bags. I’ll take self checkout any day of the week.
No-Air-3401@reddit
If I'm picking up 4 or 5 items, I'm going self checkout. The lines are faster, and I get in and out faster. If I've done a big trip by myself, then I'm going to a cashier. If I'm with my partner, I wish I could go to self checkout. Again, it'd be faster and it'd be bagged the way I want it. Jobs haven't been lost, they've just become the personal shoppers and runners instead of being cashiers.
SnowblindAlbino@reddit
I don't want to deal with customer service or retail employees ever if I can avoid it. 90% of them are cranky, inefficient, or incompetent...so why go through the hassle?
slayer_7006@reddit
Lmao. This^^. I like when the "bagger" insists on "helping", which means a 2 liter bottle of soda will be on the top of a bag, with bread and crushed veggies underneath.
WinterMedical@reddit
Self check is for amateurs .Self scan is where it’s at. You bag as you go and never have to talk to a soul.
OuchBag@reddit
HATE.
techdevjp@reddit
I've gotten very quick at it for the stores I go to regularly. I'm not going to do a huge cart of stuff, but if I have a few items I don't mind doing it myself.
Future-Cat-7152@reddit
I love self checkout. The fewer people I have to interact with, the happier I am. Plus I can do things how I want. Win win.
sometimesnowing@reddit
Yeah nah, they have an excellent track record for getting it right. Often the fresh fruit and vege have been selected from out the back, the freshest deliveries. I'm really picky about about what I choose and I've not been unhappy yet
LucyDominique2@reddit
I don’t use it - watch Year after Year on HBO….how jobs disappear etc….
timothytuxedo@reddit
I did 36 years in retail and I was there when they first installed them.
I am pro self-checkout. But only for small orders. I really don’t think they are meant for large orders.
The ‘taking jobs away’ crowd needs to consider all the jobs created because of them, designing, manufacturing, transport, installation and maintenance. That’s a lot of jobs created.
inbedwithbeefjerky@reddit
But it’s a one and done. Those machines were created and built by working people, true. Once. They build the machines once that take jobs away from people for ever.
LawnJerk@reddit
If there’s an open cashier, I go there. They are professional cashiers so they can knock out my order quickly. If not, and I don’t have much, I don’t mind self checkout.
I look forward to when all items have rfid tags and they can just tell you what it in your cart, all you have to do is bag it.

Budgiejen@reddit
As a cashier, I don’t want a machine taking my job.
inbedwithbeefjerky@reddit
I don’t want a machine taking your job either. I’ll always see a cashier and I tell everyone else to do the same. PEOPLE need jobs not robots.
Flaky_Instruction215@reddit
I don’t want a machine taking your job either. I won’t use self checkout. I’ve had managers in the supermarket try to steer me to self checkout, then when I don’t budge they actually scan my stuff at the self checkout.

evolutionsknife@reddit
Self checkout. Keep me away from people.
Ikerukuchi@reddit
We’re a walk to the supermarket every couple of days and use a hand basket shoppers so self checkout all the way.
robertwadehall@reddit
I encounter it at Home Depot on Saturdays and often I have items (pavers usually) that don’t have bar codes..have to get someone to look it up.
TeamShonuff@reddit
Why not take a picture of the sign when you load them on the flatbed?
robertwadehall@reddit
I do. They still have to look it up on the computer.
PyrokineticLemer@reddit
I will always choose self checkout. No muss, no fuss and no mystery bagging.
HoosierLarry@reddit
I hate them because each one they took away two jobs. We got nothing in return. In fact, don’t accidentally overlook something or else you get accused of theft and prosecuted. I used to work retail. I forgot to ring things up. Customers forgot to take something they paid for. Mistakes happen. Don’t blame people for theft when you created the problem.
JSilvertop@reddit
I prefer to interact with fellow humans at a checkout line. Yes, I’m faster, as I’ve had years doing retail work. But there’s far more self checkout happening, and I’ll be grumpy about it till I pass.
FoxPowerful4230@reddit
If I have a full cart or there’s produce or alcohol involved, I’ll go to a cashier. If it’s a quick trip and I only have a few things? Self checkout all the way.

As an introvert, I’m always happy to minimise my interactions with humans.
KingPabloo@reddit
Love it - almost never a line and I can get in and out quickly. I prefer to bag my own stuff - properly.

Small number of items = self checkout. Anything else, cashier.
Solid5of10@reddit
I like self checkout. It’s so much faster
whoray85@reddit
Self checkout unless I have a full cart - which is rarely.
1questions@reddit
Hate self-checkout. Hate the damn computer yelling at me- Place items in the bagging area! Bitch I’ll place my 2-3 items where I want. How many bags do you need? None, please let me just pay so we can be done. Thing is so damn loud.
OriginalBadKitty@reddit
And the “bagging area” is alway too small, if you move a bag to put it in your cart, the system goes into meltdown mode because the weight has changed.
IHadTacosYesterday@reddit
Self Checkout is usually 3 times as fast. I don't mind human interactions, but I just want to get my stuff and go, so self checkout is the way to do it faster
Alternative_Roll_925@reddit
Now that the process is smooth and there are very few errors, I prefer self checkout. I’d rather do things myself than have to rely on someone else to do them, plus risk the potential small talk.
GhostFour@reddit
I hate it but it's like everything else, automated self-serve. I went into a Taco Bell a few months ago and they didn't have a cashier at the counter. Someone finally directed me to use the kiosk. Won't be long before the cooking is automated and there is only a single employee there for emergencies. Emergencies with the machines, not the customers.
doghouse2001@reddit
I prefer it. It's faster. I do think though that we should get a small discount for doing the stores work for them.
Defiant_Gate_6074@reddit
Self checkout. Leave me be.
beachlover77@reddit
I prefer a cashier. I will always go to a cashier if they have a short line. If all cashiers have a lomg then I will do the self check out.
CatWranglingVetRedo@reddit
This is the way.
tootzrpoopz@reddit
As an introvert, I will always choose the self checkout if one is available.
bluestem99@reddit
This is my answer as well. I will gladly take any opportunity to avoid human interaction.
BertaRocks@reddit
This. Plus I was a register jockey for years and I like the way I do it better.
hazelquarrier_couch@reddit
Until COVID, I never used self checkout because I did not want the loss of jobs self checkout meant for workers. During COVID, I preferred them as a safety measure and never really went back. They are great for some things, but terrible for others. A lot of the stores around me have the security features turned up really high, so they become a nuisance more than something helpful.
GroovyGramPam@reddit
Probably depends on whether you are an extrovert or introvert!
dbrmn73@reddit
Im an introvert and refuse to use them. Just because I use a regular line doesn't require me to chit chat.
therealgookachu@reddit

Genia0799@reddit
I have actually gone into a Kroger that at 6pm on a Sunday only had self checkout open. I am disabled and self check out with a cart full of groceries isn't possible for me.
LHCThor@reddit
I prefer self check if I only have a few items
Commercial_Okra7519@reddit
I prefer the self checkout now because since Covid, the cashiers don’t bag your groceries anymore. None of the big grocery stores in my city do. Prior to social distancing, they always bagged or had a second roaming staff bagging.
It quickly became normal. Bagging the items was part of the overall servjce. They just never started again and when I asked, the cashiers would tell me “oh no we don’t do that anymore”. The prices didn’t go down, they went up but less service.
If I have to bag all of my own anyway I would rather not be rushed and use the self checkout.
TMBActualSize@reddit
Please place your item in the bagging area. Bagging area is the size of a half sandwich
Honest-Layer9318@reddit
Really grinds my gears. Things are so sensitive if you breath in the general direction it thinks you added something to the bagging area that you didn’t scan. Now you get to wait for an employee to put in their code. If you have more than 10 items you have to wait for an employee to put in a code. Bump it, code Ten more items, code.
dbrmn73@reddit
I go to stores to shop, not work. Unless they're gonna give me a discount for doing their job Im not using a self check out. I have actually walked out of a store leaving a cart sitting there when they told me all they had open at the time was self checkout.
DrVioletHaze@reddit
If I don’t have much, have plenty of time, or want to organize my stuff in a particular way to make it easier to put away when I get home—self check out. However, I prefer a human even if I have to help bag.
OriginalBadKitty@reddit
HATE self check out…people don’t know how to use it, always having to wait to have a person come over and “unlock” something someone has scanned, or need some code for. And the scanners are too slow. I’m swiping things like crazy and the machine can’t keep up. Have to stop, go back, rescan. If you want me to check myself out, then you need to have a system that works faster than a person, otherwise it’s a waste of my time.
Mscharlita@reddit
PLEASE put the item in the BAGGING AREA!
OriginalBadKitty@reddit
Hahah!! Yes! It’s already in there!
alipratt25@reddit
Totally prefer the “flying under the radar” aspect of self checkout. Plus, I kinda like using the scanner and bagging my own groceries. I guess it gives me a sense of purpose. Worked a lot of service jobs but never a cashier. So, like to think I could master that too.
But…I don’t like that it takes away human jobs. And alcohol purchases are a pain in the ass too
SageObserver@reddit
I have typically preferred it until recently when they constantly need to be cleared out by an attendant for one reason or another.
SlowPokeInTexas@reddit
I hate it. I hate the concept, I hate the inconvenience, I hate that they're trying to take away the jobs of people who do it all so some moronic bean-counter can claim they came up with an original thought, I hate that I am not getting a discount for using it.
unicorncholo@reddit
Yup, im not your fucking employee. You dont want to check me out? Ok, ill have my employee discount, which is usually buy one get one free.
SlowPokeInTexas@reddit
There was once a restaurant in Toronto called Marche Movenpick that had this concept of food islands. You would walk to say the meat department with your clean plate, pick out what you wanted and they'd put it on the plate for you. You repeated this for vegetables, bread, other items. To their credit, the food wasn't half bad. But despite you going and getting your own food, they included a gratuity charge on the bill. Drove me bananas.
unicorncholo@reddit
Hmm, that’s different. Was the gratuity based on how many stops you made at different islands?
SlowPokeInTexas@reddit
No it was just automatically added onto the bill. I mean if you want to just increase the cost and charge me more but not tell me you're charging me more, then do so. But to charge me for waitstaff that don't do anything for me and then tell me you're doing that?
QueenScorp@reddit
I agree with your partner. The less I have to interact with strangers the better.
Magik160@reddit
Oh I love self check out. I have ocd, so I scan in the order I want so I can bag how I want. I dont need 20 bags with 2 items. Or milk in a bag. Or a 6 pack of soda in a bag. They have handles. Leave me alone
OneManLost@reddit
Prefer them. I want to get into and out of the store as quick as possible.
Poneke365@reddit
I prefer self check out. I’ll use it rather than going to a check out operator.
iAutonomous2072@reddit
I use self-checkout everywhere except for Costco, their system sucks, unload bulk on a small checkout area. The people vary in assistance from mildly annoyed to over helpful. Sam’s does it way better. Scan with my phone, pay on my phone, checked at exit.
If you go to a store with no expectations self-checkout is no big deal. If you expect service when you go to a store you set yourself up to be disappointed in my opinion.
Checkout is fundamentally loss prevention theater.
RanaRene@reddit
I love Costco up until it's time to check out. My Costco seems to change the rules every time. Only heavy items stay in the cart, take everything out, prescan today- better have your card ready even if you're 10 carts deep in line. Idgaf what it is but consistency would be nice.
BonezOz@reddit
Very rarely when I shop is there still a standard manned checkout, so I almost always use the self-checkout. However, if for some reason I shop earlier in the day, and on my way to the checkouts and see a manned one open, I'll jump on it.
I'm introverted, but act extroverted when I need to, so if I can chat up a checkout person and make their day a bit brighter, I will.
Kitchen-Zebra-4402@reddit
It takes people much longer to use the self-checkout than if it was a live human being.
Inner_Sheepherder_65@reddit
I hate it so much! I want to relax in line and let someone else do the scanning. Those self checkout machines are really stressful for me. It surprises me how many people like it.
TeamShonuff@reddit
I’m honestly surprised that there is anyone who would rather go through a line then use the self check out.
How interesting.
Hebshesh@reddit
No self checkout for me. The checkout people have to get bored and I like to talk to people. And I don't go to McDonald's, order, then make my own QPC. I'd just scan half my groceries then say "I'm going on break" and hope someone brought cupcakes to the break room, since they want to treat me as an employee.

But McDonald’s almost forces you to order on the kiosk so it still cutting out the human (labor cost).

I mostly use self checkout, although a lot of it is annoying. I bring my own bag. I tell the computer I brought my own bag and then put my bag down and it tells me to scan the item (my bag I just told it I had), just about every single time!
TeamShonuff@reddit
They make these amazing totopo de Maiz chips and they are as fragile as they are delicious.
After the checkout woman slammed the first bag down, I said ‘oh please be careful with those chips; they’re extremely fragile.’ She treated the second bag like she was a member of the bomb squad overly gesturing everything because of my ludicrous request.
Self check out every single time.
MylesLong777@reddit
I thought you meant suicide! Lol
ElevatorOrganic5644@reddit
It could possibly be a mute point in the future. Grocery stores are starting to shy away from self checkouts and go back to Cashiers because of all the the theft. But it's ironic the big box stores or going to all self checkouts or phone apps. This is in the United States where I live.

Under 10-12 items self checkout, full cart? cashier.
Antique-Ant5557@reddit
What about if you have to buy depends. Or an enema? How now brown cow?
muy-feliz@reddit
This cracks me up because I bought tampons at a register with a male cashier, and my daughter was embarrassed. She opted to wait in the car to “avoid the awkward situation I put him in.”
OLovah@reddit
I'm a lover of the elf checkout. In theory I'd prefer they all be manned by humans but if I have the choice I go self check every time.
Positive_Hippo_@reddit

Tuco--11@reddit
Tolerable when it was a lane or two and you only had a greeting card and a can of easy cheese. But, they didn’t stop there. Now, there’s more of them than real checker lines. Soon being a stocker and unloading trucks will be the only jobs left for people…for now. Also, I don’t work there (and am super slow finding the bar code)!!
chillfire12@reddit
Hate 'em 🤘
Brilliant-Onion2129@reddit
I use a self check if I only have a few items (8-10 or less). If I have a full cart I use full service. Doesn’t really matter to me, whatever is fastest. Self checks keep costs down lowering prices but put people out of work.
Neener216@reddit
Team self-checkout. My local supermarket makes it too easy; they have portable scanner guns for customers, so all I have to do is scan my savings card and cruise the aisles for whatever I need, scanning and then putting everything into my reusable bags. When I'm done, the scanner totals everything. I head to self-checkout for the final scan, make my payment, and disappear into the mist.
Independent_Sock_213@reddit
It is truly the best experience. Except, of course, for the occasional random audit.
Neener216@reddit
OMG I get unreasonably angry at the audits. Why you gotta slow my roll like that 😂
ShopRite introduced SmartCarts a while ago - the cart itself scans and weighs whatever you put into it, and the cameras in the cart notice if something wasn't scanned. I prefer the handheld scanner because the cart is really bulky and sometimes difficult to maneuver, but at least it prevents the dreaded surprise audit!
Calm_Drawer7731@reddit
I’ve always preferred them. It gets me out of the store faster and I don’t have to talk to anybody.
PrettyBoyBob13@reddit
Self checkout is fine, going to a cashier is fine… As a Gen X-er though WTF is up with the use of the word “partner”? I don’t understand it and I don’t like it. You have a boyfriend or a girlfriend or a husband or a wife …why make it so difficult?

I'm ambivalent. Fine with either. It usually depends on how long the lines are. I don't mind doing it myself, and - and I know this makes me a reddit weirdo - I don't mind chatting with the cashier for the couple minutes it takes to check out

mr_mxyzptlk21@reddit
I'm leery of them because of skimmers, and would prefer someone be able to have a job over doing it myself, BUT... in some stores, and if I'm not buying a lot, I'll use them.
comma_space_erase@reddit
I hate self-checkout.
MsAddams999@reddit
I won't use them because they are easier targets for people who put skimmers on registers. I won't use a card at a bodega or convenience store either now because it's becoming increasingly common to see skimmers there too.
I don't particularly like people being replaced by self checkouts and if that's all they have open I won't shop there. That's human jobs lost and me doing the work for them. Having worked retail management for many years I'm not too cool with that in an economy where many people can't even get hired for low paying jobs like that.
About the time I got out of that field was when they started running retail shops with skeleton crews and where as a manager I was suddenly getting asked to run my location 7 days a week by myself during the slower parts of the year.
I was like NOPE I'm not getting paid enough on salary to work 12 hour days, 7 days a week so you don't have to pay anyone else. When they told me it wasn't optional I quit. They were already working me practically to death as it was and the pay was ridiculously low when I divided it up into an hourly rate with the hours I actually worked every week.
I wish I could say that wasn't the norm in retail management but there it was and I finally left retail for office work again just to get paid fairly and to have an actual 40 hr week.
Self checkouts are just one more way for these companies to minimize people and paying a decent wage. Why pay several cashiers if one person can oversee those self checkouts?
I walked into this one store recently that looked like fun. I got some stuff and walked up to checkout and there was NO cashier. Just one person watching 8 self checkouts. So you couldn't pay in cash at all.
I put the basket down and walked out. It was rude of me not to put my stuff back but I think it was more rude for this company to do this.
I thought it was odd so I looked it up online and apparently this chain runs things just like that everywhere.
Recently they passed a law here that stores have to take cash so I guess they'll have to have one cashier for cash only now.
FYI that store wasn't that small but they had just one person overseeing everything except for a security guard upstairs as you came in. He wasn't even checking receipts against what was in your bag so I'm guessing that shoplifting is rampant in that store especially since I saw very few signs of cameras in the place.
LoosePhilosopher1107@reddit
Same here. Not only do I screw it up every time, but I’m not an employee…
bmyst70@reddit

devilsmile7@reddit
Use the humans. Self checkout is doing the job someone should get paid to do. Every time you use self checkouts you are justifying someone losing a job. They keep stats. Wake up people.
Mogus0226@reddit
I live in the middle of nowhere, so the grocery store near me doesn't have a 12 Items Or Less line. If I'm only picking up a couple of things, it's either a cashier who invariably has someone doing the shopping for a 30-person summer camp cookout, or self-checkout.
lassobsgkinglost@reddit

SadCranberry8838@reddit
In Germany the cashier is always going to be 300% faster than me and near zero pointless small talk. Self checkout only when i have fewer than 4 items.
trigger55xxx@reddit
I love it. If there's a wrong price on a sale item is easy to catch, I can go at my pace and bag how I want. Scan and go at Sam's Club and one local store is the best thing ever.
TimeenoughatlastTZ@reddit
You’re exactly me! At self checkout I can make sure all my discounts/coupons are applying. At the regular register you can’t tell because it all comes off at the end. And scan and go at Sam’s is my favorite!! No lines, in and out quick!

Self-checkout all day and twice on Sunday! It lessens interactions with people who I prefer not to interact with. More for their protection than mine. 😏
What grinds my gears are those with an overflowing cart going through the tiny self-checkout stations with zero sense of urgency!
BeerWench13TheOrig@reddit
I definitely prefer self checkout. However, if I see a human just standing there waiting for something to do, I’ll go to them because I know how long a day at work can be when you have to be in a certain place, just in case, yet have nothing to do (with the exception of the one cashier in my local store that is slower than molasses in January).
If there are lines everywhere, I’m standing in the self checkout line every time. Mostly because it’s quicker, I know what I’m doing, and I like my items bagged a certain way.
ooone-orkye@reddit
It’s funny that human checkout has one employee.
Self checkout has two employees standing around, one stocking or getting stuff for curb pickup, the other helping the customer to do self-checkout.

Alot of big chains have more self checkout lanes than open traditional lanes. I'm looking at you Walmart. They force people to use self checkout because there's never more than 2 staffed lanes open. They keep claiming they're getting rid of self checkout but Scan and Go, like they're sister company Sam's Club uses, isn't far behind

The self checkout at our store is glitchy. It won’t let me put my stuff in my own basket. Lots of stuff won’t scan. Produce is a pain in the butt.
If I have one brick of cheese, easy. If I have anything complicated or a bunch of stuff, no good.
sand_and_wind@reddit
As someone who worked in grocery stores on/off for 20+ years, I hate it with a passion.
Self-checkout takes away the human interaction. I know, not everyone likes small talk, but some people do. For some customers, chatting with their favorite workers and cashiers is the only real social exchange they have available. I used to love it when my regulars would come through the line. Also, I don't work there and they don't pay me to check myself out.

I'm a night owl, so have frequently found myself with a couple hundred dollars in groceries at Walmart just before closing time, and the small town one I go to you better believe they've got nobody working the registers at that time. Pisses me off so f'ing bad to bag all that shit up. My line has always been, if I have to bag my own groceries, then put me on the payroll. I grew up with grocery clerks walking the cart out to the parking lot and loading the car...you know, like actual service. I guess we have that now with pick up orders, but I don't really like that either. I need to wander around and figure out what I want.

I'm not "giving them free labor", I'm doing it my way. I don't have to remind the kid to bag my milk so it doesn't get shit all over it in the car that I will have top wipe off and dry.
I don't have to remind them not to put potatoes on my eggs or keep all the frozen shit together.
If I have a buggy full of stuff I go to a regular register because I'm not a savage. But I still bag it myself when I can.

Why do you hate it? I use it when I have the amount of items. There’s not that big of an issue. Go pay for your groceries at a cashier with your check and live in the past. With the mess the world is right now this is your hate issue.
Spiritual-Eye-2910@reddit
If I got a discount for using self checkout I would use it. Why should I pay full price and do the job of a paid employee seems dumb.
rogun64@reddit
I prefer self-checkout when I only have a few items, but it's been implemented poorly and I usually have too much in my cart.
FWIW, I heard an interview with the man who created the first self-checkout machines and he said the same thing. I've also heard that many stores are about to get rid of them, allegedly due to too much theft.
Chad_Hooper@reddit
The Walmart near me has done so, or at least greatly reduced the number of self-checkouts and replaced them with conventional checkouts.
They still don’t have enough of them open and staffed at times, but they have hired more people to work as cashiers because of this change. And that’s good for the local economy as well as an improvement in the store’s efficiency.
I’m not really a big fan of Walmart but I honestly can’t afford not to shop there.
2GOB4@reddit
I will walk out before I will use one. Each self-checkout replaces an employee who lost a job. For me it’s the principle.
TallStarsMuse@reddit
Yes. I’m fine with self-checkout and used to prefer it. But our Walmart is one of only a fee employers in our small town. I started thinking about the human toll of automation and have been using the cashier line much more often now.
Independent_Apple159@reddit
If they want me to do a cashier’s job, they can give me an employee discount. I’ve quit shopping at my local Lowe’s because all they have is self-checkout. I’ll only buy plants there in the summer since they have cashiers in the garden center.
Alot2unpack@reddit
I wish I got an employee discount lol! I pay the same price for my groceries as the customers do, I just value my time differently, so I’m doing what is more efficient, for me. Which in my case, since I understand technology, is online ordering. Click, pay, pickup. I feel for those being left behind.

Regular checkout, you can get delayed if your cashier or one customer turns out to be slow. Now there’s a whole discussion happening over some issue and I’m waiting waiting etc.
Self-checkout, 1-2-3+ people ahead can be slow but I only need one to clear and I’m in, done and out.

Mermaid_Lily@reddit
I hate self-checkout. It's just a way of the store not hiring enough people. It bugs me, because it's bad enough that you can't find anyone to help you on the floor if you need it. And then you get this faceless interaction at the end. And God forbid you set your purse down in the wrong spot and the weight sensors trigger, so you have an irritated watcher come over and yell at you for it because the technology got confused! Man, I don't work for your store! I'm just trying to buy bananas!
The stores also treat you like you're stealing from them, even though you're on camera the whole time. Our local Aldi recently put in a gate at the end of the self-checkout corral, where you have to scan your receipt in order to be let out. It's like they want us to ring up our own stuff but be treated like criminals for doing it. What's next? A body cavity check to make sure I didn't steal something? If they are so concerned about it, then have someone- like an actual HUMAN- ring my stuff up.
shamashedit@reddit
Kroger has them here, but they are turned off because they cannot keep up with the demand of use.
The biggest issue with self check out is that you can't rush it like a clerk will at a checkstand. I've tried to hurry just to get the "please scan last item".

I don't like them, cause I feel like if I'm doing their job for them, then I should get at least a 5% discount.
There's also the various stories about things failing to scan, or people forgetting to scan, and being arrested for it. And while I'm sure some of those were deliberate cases, I also know how finicky those scanners can be at times, so I'm also sure some were not.
rundabrun@reddit

saucyfister1973@reddit
Same here. If it's a handful, I will go to self checkout. If it's the weekly groceries, I'll take the full cart to a human.

Significant_Soil_600@reddit
Completely agree, unless I get a discount there is no advantage to scanning my own groceries.
I remember back in the 70s when Pick-n-Save started and you used a black crayon to write the price of the item on it. The idea was you paid less for your groceries, you did some of the work.

100% self checkout. I’ll go with a full-ass cart of $200 in groceries and still check them out myself. I prefer it. I always liked bagging my own and this makes it easier.
FaceMaulingChimp@reddit
Me too , but my stupid grocery store only allows 15 items or less for self checkout
PixelTreason@reddit
Oh that’s bullshit. I’m so sorry! I’m lucky - mine has 12 self checkouts they regularly open all at once. It’s fabulous.
idiotsbydesign@reddit
Our Walmart did a trial run with Scan & Go. With regular Scan & Go you still have to stop at a checkout to pay but the trial was to pay with your phone. Most people didn't know about it so it was pretty funny seeing peoples faces when I just walked out without going to checkout first.
sassyfontaine@reddit
Love it. Will chose above all other options always
Lewca43@reddit
I use self checkout every time and will walk past a free employee to use self checkout. I can bag everything with care, exactly as I want it.
It’s also just faster. Items go from buggy to bag instead of buggy-conveyor-employee-bag. And the real perk - I don’t have to talk to another person.
LionessInDC@reddit
I’m super allergic to perfumes and I swear people have gotten worse about OD’ing the stuff the past few years. So I always do self checkout to avoid days of painful rashes or having to wipe down all my items from the grocery.
First_Name_Is_Agent@reddit
I prefer it. Rarely a line and it's just faster.
Oxjrnine@reddit
I find self check out much more relaxing, but I’ve only been inside of a store twice in the last 2 1/2 years because I discovered delivery is cheaper.
I don’t drive so the grocery store would be about $32 every visit $16 in cab fair each way
Now the savings aren’t as great as I thought they were, but when you factor in that I can do all of my shopping during a commercial break and not have to deal with anybody in the store - it would still be worth it to me, even if it wasn’t cheaper.
And by the way, I have commercials because I’m cheap and I get the $7.99 plan for streaming instead of the $32 plan with no ads lol
FamuexAnux@reddit
With a Walmart+ membership, you get free Peacock… $0 plan plus cheap groceries delivered
aharryh@reddit
I prefer to self scan as I shop, so I only have to put the items in and pull them out once, anything else is a pain.
ibringstharuckus@reddit
Scan and go at Sam's is freaking awesome.
quarterman5050@reddit
I prefer self checkout when I don't have a lot of items. I hate it on big grocery store runs when I have to do everything myself. Not to mention that self checkouts have no holding area, so you have to immediately bag each item after you scan them. It's much faster when you have a dedicated bagger and cashier.
Sonoshitthereiwas@reddit
Why do you hate it? Why do you get bugged out?
If you only do big grocery trips, I can somewhat understand not wanting or avoiding self checkout. But I do not understand any reason to hate it or be bugged out by it unless you generally Duline technology. But that also wouldn’t make sense for you since you clearly enjoy technology based on your Reddit post alone.
5GAIBtoM@reddit (OP)
Partly, I hate the unreliable tech. Having to wait for a human to come over an override something.
Partly, I’m bugged that I’m forced to do more work for the same price.
If it doesn’t work properly, I just zone out and think “I wasn’t trained so F you giant corporation. So you only get $.87 for the apple I misidentified.”
EthanDMatthews@reddit
Self checkouts are a huge risk. There have been news stories about inventory control for major stores false accusing customers of theft via self checkout.
It usually goes something like; they’re missing 10 light switches, you bought five, but because your back is to the camera, they can just accuse you of stealing the other five.
And then its up to a jury of your peers (a bunch of 70 and 80 year olds with bad eyesight, poor cognitive function, and a naive belief that cops only arrest guilty people). Next thing you know, you’re either shelling out many thousands of dollars for a lawyer or stupidly let a public defender slow walk you to a guilty verdict, and now you’re paying a huge fine and maybe doing community service or are on probation.
But hey, the guys in inventory control get their bonus!
Severe_Feedback_2590@reddit
Always self checkout. This way I don’t have to look or talk to someone.
BOSS_OF_THE_INTERNET@reddit
I do because I move 3x faster than the average human and hate nothing more than being obstructed by slow people. Even the self checkout is too slow for me, waiting seconds between when I tap my phone and payment goes through.
tampaforfun@reddit
I am an introvert extrovert. I don't socialize and avoid crowds but like chat with cashiers.
atlredneck@reddit
I totally related to this
Grafakos@reddit
If I'm buying like 5 things and none of them are complicated (produce that needs to be weighed, alcohol, etc.) then I don't mind self checkout. Otherwise, forget it.
ellcoolj@reddit
I hate it. And here’s why.
I still have enough hair that when I look in the mirror I see hair and not my bald patch in the back.
The self check out have cameras that are from above and highlight my bald patch.
I’d rather not be reminded.
annarbor-guy@reddit
Always self checkout. Spent 8 years cashiering at a grocery store so it takes me back to a fun time in my life. I like to pack my own stuff instead of a person just tossing stuff into plastic bags. Really like Sam’s scan n go and wish Costco would adopt that.
the_kid1234@reddit
Completely dependent on the quantity of items. For a full grocery haul, standard. For 1-3 items, self check out. I can’t remember the last time I didn’t do self checkout at Home Depot.
ndbak907@reddit
I see your self checkout and raise to grocery delivery with leave at door option. I will gladly tip generously to avoid having to go through ANY checkout line and only interact via text only if absolutely necessary.
lastbeat-331@reddit
I avoid self checkout as much as possible. People need cashier jobs and if we don't get in that line they won't hire/retain those jobs.
ElleGeeAitch@reddit
Self checkout because it spares me the anxiety from feeling rushed to bag my stuff before the groceries from the customer behind me rolling down the conveyor belt get migled with my own, and I'm in their way when they want to get their groceries packed up.
mmaygreen@reddit
If I need to buy stool softener and geritol I would rather scan it myself than be subjected to judgy eyes of some lifeless checker.
JRBowen9@reddit
First of all, I have a job. And on the way home from work, I get groceries, and now I'm a cashier as well? And at the Walmart, there's a goddamn employee watching you, standing behind you, waiting for you to steal something. Just work the goddamn register! I finished my degree so I could have a second job as a cashier? HELL no.
Dboogy2197@reddit
I prefer it.
Are you the type that hates it because ‘you should not have to scan your own stuff’ or do you just hate the unreliable tech?
5GAIBtoM@reddit (OP)
Partly, I hate the unreliable tech. Having to wait for a human to come over an override something.
Partly, I’m bugged that I’m forced to do more work for the same price.

pacopleasant@reddit
Self check is cool unless you have booze. Then it’s a total waste of time because you have to get an employee to check you out anyway. And that includes non alcoholic beer, which almost caused me to have a boomer meltdown. It’s non alcoholic! A five year old could drink it! Nope gotta buy it separately. At least that’s the law where I live.
tvieno@reddit
I usually buy produce and I'm not looking up the number when the cashier already has them memorized. I use the cashier.
captainbeautylover63@reddit
Hate them, and I resent being unpaid labor for the stores.
so-not-clever@reddit
Same.. I am not a check clerk or a courtesy clerk, also why did they stop taking the groceries out to the car I miss this. Can we bring this back with 24 he Safeway’s ?
Moist_Rule9623@reddit
Seriously what’s the next step, I get to shop at full price if I’m willing to stock the shelves for 45 minutes? Empty out a 53’ trailer full of merchandise? Cut my own steaks?
Exactly HOW MUCH of a grocer do I have to become to participate in the grocery store process before my FUCKING EMPLOYEE DISCOUNT kicks in? 😂😂😂
two_wheels_west@reddit
Agree about the unpaid labor. There should be a discount given for using them.
LesiaH1368@reddit
Self check out 100 % of the time.
ChaosTheoryGirl@reddit
I would rather do self checkout.
Traditional_Ad_5859@reddit
I figure people who sort and bag groceries for an occupation probably know how to do it better than some old guy. If not, why are yhey working there or why still go to that store? The only exception is if i need to buy a few items in a rush.
Tangboy50000@reddit
It’s a love hate relationship. Kroger purposely slows down the scan rate for some reason, especially on the lanes for bigger orders with the belt, so you end up swiping items over the scanner multiple times waiting for the laser to kick back on. Other shoppers drive me nuts with all their time wasting bullshit at the scanners, just fucking go. A lot of them have new security features that get triggered by nonsense, which means you have to wait for a cashier to come and clear it out when literally nothing occurred. When I’m there early in the morning, no line, and can just be in and out in less than 10 minutes, I love it.
Key-Cattle-2866@reddit
I use it most of the time. It’s too late now to think stores are going to get rid of them.
tdawg-1551@reddit
I prefer self checkout because I'm faster than the workers and I can bag stuff how I want.
magster823@reddit
Bagging items is the biggest reason I prefer self-checkout. They're organized how I want them to be, in a logical fashion. I find that no matter how I put things on the belt, most cashiers will bag without care.
Snow_Tiger819@reddit
This!
Key_Hat_5721@reddit
I hate self checkout. I get irrationally irritated when my grocery store closes the actual cashier lanes at random and I am forced to use self checkout.
Ladymistery@reddit
I prefer the human because they'll still bag for me, but if I have 5 or less items I'll hit the self because it's faster.
BranchReg14@reddit
OP, you sound like a boomer. 😵💫
100% self check out.
Eatmore-plants@reddit
I like self checkout. If there is a long line sometimes I’ll joke about everyone being coworkers.
BobbyJGatorFace@reddit
I hate it. I don’t work for your store. If you want me to self checkout, charge me less
ReasonableBack8472@reddit
Nope I no longer work for Coles. If we use the safe checkouts all the time. They will just get rid of all the manned checkouts. Then where will our kids get their first job? We need to get rid of self checkouts and bring some human involvement back into things. Also a reason why kids these days are so recluse, they don't get human interaction.

Upbeat_Rock3503@reddit
I do tend to find self checkout easier if I don't have many items.
Cashiers tend to try and upsell things or have extra steps that self checkouts don't have.
What I like the best is app checkout. No cashier, no self checkout, just a check if you get audited while leaving or receipt check at a wholesale club like everyone else gets anyway. This is the winner.
Bubba_Phet@reddit
Sam's Scan and Go for the WIN!
flsingleguy@reddit
Over the years I got tired of the busy body cashiers making comments about everything in my cart. Now, I can go through without the commentary.
Fair-Wishbone-1190@reddit
I prefer self checkout. I'm not much of a people person or small chit chat person so I prefer less contact if possible.
Distinct_Magician713@reddit
I love self checkout. I love ordering my groceries for pickup even more.
anchises868@reddit
Walmart is the only grocery store near me and so I’m stuck with that. It’s also close enough to my apartment complex that I can see it from my living room. All that said, I happily pay the $98 a year for Walmart+ just to get free delivery and shipping. Not dealing with the people of Walmart for a whole year is worth far more than a hundred bucks to me.
Gold-Fall3790@reddit
This is the way. I hate going into Walmart with a white hot passion, but the grocery pickup is quick and easy. Self checkout is great at Aldi. I can get in and out with a couple things faster than I can buy something at a 7-11
iggyomega@reddit
I prefer whatever I think will be faster. Most of the time it’s self checkout. But if it’s a big grocery store visit with many items, I often prefer cashier checkout, especially if they have someone to bag the groceries. Whatever gets me out of there faster.
Useful_Specific5275@reddit
It’s ok if I only have a few items. The problems occur when I go shopping at 8 am to avoid the heat and there are no lanes open except self checkout. There is not enough room for my full cart of groceries.

b4yougo2@reddit
I always use the self checkout. I can do a faster job than the idiots they hire to be cashiers. My time is money and I'm not wasting money on idiots that can't do the job they are responsible for every day faster than someone who does it once a week.
The_Safe_For_Work@reddit
I always use Self-Checkout. I really don't understand the hate.
Lostboyintheforest@reddit
I hate the self checkout, I don't work there plus it robs people of jobs.

Lostboyintheforest@reddit
Put it in the corral....the guy brings them in. Good idiot reply though ...smh
YourIgnoranceOurPain@reddit

Lostboyintheforest@reddit
Congrats you just won the stupid award. The more you use self checkout the less they need cashiers. SMH
TootieSummers@reddit
I love it and just wish you had to pass an iq test first before going up.
anchises868@reddit
It depends on how long the self-checkout line is and how much stuff I have to check out. If I see a completely open cashier, I might well go to them if (1) I have a lot of items and/or (2) all of the self-checkouts are being used. That said, I much prefer being my own cashier.
tungtingshrimp@reddit
Anything less than 30 items is self checkout. I stopped going to a small market near me because they didn’t have self checkout.
Walknshan@reddit
It’s a nightmare to use at CVS - especially if using any CVS coupons!

OIL_99@reddit
1000% prefer self-checkout. Interaction with humans at most stores these days should be ones #1 priority 🤣
this_is_Winston@reddit
If there's any kind of electronic coupon or deal involved, I've struggled before getting it to work right.
scooterj54@reddit
Self-checkout hands down.
geolaw@reddit
Scan and go + self check out all the way
cafali@reddit
My local grocers have self-checkout but you have to bag everything individually, and scan each item individually; I hate it but use it if I only have a few items and the line is longer at the cashier’s. But, and I hate shopping at Walmart deeply, but their self checkout lets you take the gun and and scan items and skip bagging quickly (heavy items like 12 packs of soda) and I’m okay with it. Also, I get an email receipt. My preference is a fully employed grocery store with baggers who take my cart out but those are a dying breed. (Shout out to Brookshires who has this all available if needed).
PuzzleheadedBand2595@reddit
I like it because if I happen to not be in the mood for small talk it is calmer for me. Sometimes I am feeling ok being more open to taking a little, but so many times a person in front of me, or the checker, is obviously needing human connection so badly that they take double or more of the normal time. There’s nothing wrong with that per se, I’m glad they get the connection they need but it is a huge trigger for me for some reason.
KOVID9tine@reddit
10 items or less is a must AND you can’t have some weird thing in your cart like organic dragonfruit etc.
oboingadoing@reddit
If I have a few things I will use it, but if I have a cart of shit... no. The design sucks. No room to put things. If I have beer, I have to wait for somebody anyway. Basically if it is convenient for me yes, if it's convenient for the store, no.
Spiritualy-Salty@reddit
Depends on how many items I have and whether or not I am buying alcohol, cigarettes or porn.
dtoddh@reddit
When buying alcohol I prefer attended checkout. Otherwise it's self checkout.
root_fifth_octave@reddit
So you’ve never actually used the self-checkout is what you’re saying.
Admirable_Desk8430@reddit

aenflex@reddit
Self checkout all the way. Clock and collect for large shopping.
Misokatsun@reddit
I also don't like having to bag my own groceries... Don't kids need work these days?
SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
They do, but companies decided to buy a machine instead. Imagine retail’s become somewhat of a competitive entry level job because of how much they choose to understaff these stores.

Temporary_Shirt_6236@reddit

I hate that it takes jobs off the market.
jaredjc@reddit

welltravelledRN@reddit
Not frustrating at all! I tend to stay pretty calm about the daily issues in life. No need to get upset about things that don’t matter.
Sonoshitthereiwas@reddit

SimpleVegetable5715@reddit
No. I did my time as a cashier, I’m over it. Pay a person to ring me up.
DreamTheaterGuy@reddit
I use it as much as I can. Limits human interaction.
mizuaqua@reddit
I will use either, whichever is going to be faster. I go to Costco to get 4 things so there's no way I'm standing in a long line behind full carts or people who still pay with a personal check. I also worked as a grocery cashier as a teen so doing self-checkout became second nature.
The worst checkout system is the automated carts that Whole Foods and Amazon Fresh kept trying to implement. They have weird quirks and rarely worked as intended for me.
AdhesiveSeaMonkey@reddit
I only ever use it at Walmart, and only if they have the gun. I position all my items in the cart, barcodes up. I can scan a full cart faster than I can even load it on the belt. And, frankly, I'm not much of a people person.
Uxoandy@reddit
I liked it when it was for people that were buying like 10 items or less and people with full carts went through the normal checkouts. Not so much when there 25 regular lanes with no cashiers and everyone is using them.
