Used to love these things - this was one of my favorites...
HighSeasArchivist@reddit
My two all time favorites.
Now, Grog!
Midvale
My daughter is very intelligent, but I get to call her Midvale at least a few times per year.
salamandah99@reddit
anytime I push on a pull door or vice versa I say "school for the gifted"
dirtybird971@reddit
One of my favorite things....The thagomizer is made up by/for this strip but caught on so well it's now the official name for 4-10 spikes on the tails of stegosaurus dinosaurs.
reachers_toothbrush@reddit
That's not the only time either. This did not exist before the comic but is now an officially recognised phobia.
dirtybird971@reddit
My Fav was luposlipaphobia. the specific fear of being pursued by timber wolves around a kitchen table while wearing socks on a newly waxed floor.
Dauvis@reddit
I was watching a dinosaur show a while back and they began talking about stegosaurus. I kept chanting please say thagomizer and guess what... I was not disappointed.

I LOVED that comic, had several of the books. Always guaranteed to make me laugh out loud, especially the ones with dinosaurs.
Brief-Earth-5815@reddit
I'm afraid you've got cows, Mr. Farnsworth.
somthingblu@reddit
We still say this one!
FraGough@reddit
Always been a fan of Gary Larsen. I love the story of how he became friends with Jane Goodall.
rickypockets@reddit
I bought a far side daily calendar for my 13 and 11-year-old-I have to explain a few to them, but they’re loving them!
NoAbbreviations290@reddit
Beware of Doug
ElPanguero@reddit
Had a beloved neighbor named Doug who was awesome and so I had a Beware of Dog sign, modded it a bit and jammed it in his yard.
Dougs last name was Harrison, he rhymed everything with us kids names and we likewise with his- to this day my current dog is Chuey the Bear aka Chewy Bear AKA Chuey Barrison aka Mr.Barrison in honor of my most favorite Doug ever of all time.
emax4@reddit
I discovered this a few years back, still one of my faves. Imagine the history books if Abe opened up with a joke.
Key_Mastodon_3525@reddit (OP)
that's hysterical!
WileyCoyote7@reddit
I think this sums up things nicely.
EverythingScrolling@reddit
In the 90s, I had this one on a t-shirt.
buginmybeer24@reddit
This is exactly what came to mind for me. I had it on a T-shirt during college.
cinciTOSU@reddit
Cat Fud is up there too!
deagh@reddit
He started putting out new comics again in 2020! Not a lot of them, but he decided to learn how to use digital drawing tools.
LissyVee@reddit
I still have some of my old Far Side cartoon books. They are so funny.

Currently having a far side calendar
BigDougSp@reddit
Years ago... when the internet was starting to expand into everyday life and Yahoo chat was all the rage...
Yahoo featured an event where Gary Larsen would participate in a chat room, answering questions from the public.
I asked "What are your favorite themes to draw in your comics?"
His answer was "Amoebas, because they are easy!"
He then followed up with "I don't really have a favorite per se, just whatever I feel like drawing."
I saved a screen shot, but that was several several computers ago and hopelessly lost. Still it was pretty awesome!
Romanmir@reddit
I was always partial to this one along with most of the others in this thread.

My favorite.
Brkthom@reddit
Do you wonder if he drew this and realized, no, the dinosaurs have to look more pinkish? So he gave them all scowls! 🤪
imtoowhiteandnerdy@reddit
I used to love Far Side.
I still love Far Side, but I used to too.
Apologies to Mitch.
Ethelfleda@reddit
I get that reference 😉

One of our group's favourites back in the day.
kevbayer@reddit
Every time wife or I push on a pull door (or vice versa), we both say "School for the gifted!" because of that Farside comic.
PlantMystic@reddit
Yes. Used to get a big calendar every year and a daily one for my purse.
GogglesPisano@reddit

I went to the same elementary school Gary Larson did. Our library was decked out in Far Side stuff
SamHandwich0@reddit
Ive had this since then- lol

My wife and I call it a Midvale Moment
slothboy@reddit
This was my favorite also lol.
Reddiculusness@reddit
one of my favorites
RunsWithPremise@reddit
I always thought this was interesting because the automatic closer is on the outside of the door. There's no way you could open the door by pulling it. It made me wonder if it was completely unintentional by Gary Larson or if he knew what he was doing and the kid really is gifted because he understood how doors work.
Reddiculusness@reddit
I get what you're saying, but not all door closers are internally mounted . isn't recommended because of weather, but they do make them .
PhilDGrowler@reddit
I had this on a t shirt.
dirtybird971@reddit
This!!!
SebrinePastePlaydoh@reddit
I still randomly drop Midvale School for the Gifted in conversations as the best quiet insult.
MatrixRecycled_2015@reddit
Full on laugh - I had this one pinned to my work cubicle for years.
MrBrawn@reddit
I had the calendar. Used to stick the up in my cubicle lol.

In our first house my wife was feeling artsy and wall papered a wall in the guest bathroom with these comics. It was actually really cool.
bolson77@reddit
I can't explain why this one is so funny, but it gets me every time.
skylinesend@reddit
I buy the argyle sweater calendar every year. Not as good as the far side, but it's better than anything else out there!
MartoufCarter@reddit
Ha! My family used to do the daily Farside for years and we also switched to the Argyle Sweater.
Lord_Nurggle@reddit
Gary Larsen shut down the r/farside. Well he stopped us from posting comics so we reverted to using verbal descriptions.
Strangely he does not want his work on the internet, not sure how many flip calendars he is selling these days.
mfk_1974@reddit
For decades, Gary Larson resisted an online presence for The Far Side. Eventually he got tired of the content being published illegally, so a few years ago thefarside.com finally went up. They republish your old favorites, sometimes adding colorization. You can only access a few comics at a time, but it's so cool to have an old (or new) favorite pop up.
