What's that one household item you grew up with that you still use/eat/purchase today?
Posted by Calm-Tale-4052@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 982 comments
Comet for me! Was used to clean showers, bathtubs, toilets, sinks etc. throughout my childhood. I use it all the time for bathroom cleaning. Every spray, liquid on that market that I've used is garbage. Nothing cleans the hard stains on the inside of stand-up shower glass like some Comet and wet sponge.
Bromodrosis@reddit
Vegetable peeler. One of the old metal ones kinda shaped like a violin. I'm much faster with it than any other peeler. Likely because I was my mom's designated peeler as a kid.
I bought one when I moved out of the house and inherited the original when I found it in the back of a drawer when cleaning up dads apartment.
jeexbit@reddit
you can't beat these things...
Bromodrosis@reddit
That's it!
Powerful_Audience208@reddit
Yup, I have one like that too. And the tip of it helps to core out any bad spots/etc in a potato. Only thing is that it's sometimes hard on my hands if I am peeling a lot of taters.

Soft Scrub; Vick's Vap-O-Rub; Noxema (for my sunburns); Murphy's Oil Soap; I used to use Pine Sol until they reformulated it and took the pine oil out of it and now I use Pinalen, which is cheaper and still has pine oil; Mr. Clean; Lestoil; Zout; Ivory Soap; Gold Medal Flour; Rumford Baking Powder; Arm and Hammer Baking Soda; Fleischman's Yeast; I'm positive I have a Betty Crocker cake mix somewhere in this house; Oscar Mayer bacon for my husband; Schweppes Ginger Ale; Coca-Cola; Pepsi (I'm not a brand loyalist, and I buy the zero sugar ones, the flavored ones, and random stuff within the brand labels, too); Moxie for my husband, who clearly enjoys the taste of licorice and diesel fuel; and there are so, so many others.

Neosporin. I don’t care what all the social media derms say about it!
FloatingOnTitties@reddit
What do they say bad about it?
Zerofuksyall@reddit
It’s unnecessary and actually delays healing.
FloatingOnTitties@reddit
How exactly does it “delay” healing? I don’t think that’s true. I’ve read many articles and studies that have stated that Neosporin may not be better than plain Vaseline (petroleum jelly), but Neosporin is like 98% petroleum jelly anyway. https://health.osu.edu/health/skin-and-body/wound-care-myths
Zerofuksyall@reddit
That’s pretty much the issue, putting petroleum jelly on wounds is contraindicated. It causes excessive moisture and maceration, and kills good skin bacteria as well as bad.
Plenty-Run-9575@reddit
That they don’t recommend it anymore because it can cause allergic reactions on the skin.
aKIMIthing@reddit
Oh yea… and it’s not good for open sores bc of the antibiotics… not all wounds need antibiotics and your body will heal itself. So it could build an unnecessary immunity. (Ya get the gist … I’m not a doctor!😂😂)
FloatingOnTitties@reddit
I’ve never heard that before. I’ve been using Neosporin for over 50 years, lol.

I like miracle whip best on my sandwiches. I've tried tons of mayos but always go back to miracle whip for sandwiches. We all like different flavors and that's okay.
NahNah-P@reddit
Me too. I can't eat anything that says real mayo on it. For many people who was raised on miracle whip, it's the only thing that tastes right. I'm one of them. I like mustard but on my turkey sandwich or to dip my grill cheese, I need miracle whip. We also used to eat it with soda crackers. I always have both around for people who prefer mayo but I eat miracle whip or French's mustard.

Foods: Kraft Mac & Cheese. Jello. Ritz, Wheat Thins, and Goldfish crackers. Honey Maid graham crackers. Honey Nut Cheerios. Campbells Bean with Bacon soup. Oreo cookies. See’s Lollypops (I miss their caramel one though!). I’ll also admit to getting McDonalds fries and a Filet-O-Fish every once in a blue moon. So my uncle back in the mid 70s came out as gay in his 40s. Fast forward to ‘86 (I’m 11 yo now) and my memory recalls seeing him show up at our house in MD with full gorgeous hair (mullets were the rage) but a wild bump with bandage on his neck (lymphoma cancer).
Later that evening, my parents tell me Uncle Eric contracted HIV and he was moving in with us so my mom could take care of him.
He went downhill so fast - lost all his hair to chemo, lost a bunch of weight, and eventually AIDS got the best of him. Never once did he complain or moan: just always kindness and gratitude. I’m crying now. Such a gentle soul that didn’t deserve the cruelty of what terminal illness does to a person.
My last memory of him alive was a few months later him being taken by ambulance in the middle of the night on a gurney. I never got to see him in hospital and after that he passed a few days later.
During the time he lived with us, my mom bought bleach by the case loads. She knew it was one of few cheap cleaning products that she could use (now seeing this with my middle-aged perspective) to feel psychologically safe with a virus at the time we knew not much about…so little that I was told to never tell neighbors or friends or even certain family members that my uncle had contracted HIV because we feared people would ostracize us.
So to this day, bleach means it was my parents way of coping with success the unknowns of what was scary.
You’ll always be my fav, Uncle E ❤️

The level of disdain today for campbells soup is so bizarre to me. These are a casserole staple - I’m not sure why they are so hated by the younger generations 🤷♀️
rivenshire@reddit
The ingredients are crap, but they do taste good. My favorites were Chicken Noodle, Chicken Gumbo, and Tomato Rice. I used to sometimes cook with Cream of Mushroom and Cream of Chicken. Trader Joe's has a healthier one they sell in the fall that I use in green bean casserole for Thanksgiving.
radicalelation@reddit
For me, they've become expensive for being best used as an ingredient, and way too expensive for a basic soup that I swear tastes worse than growing up (personal taste changes too).
anniemdi@reddit
Confession: I'm here as one of the oldest millennials and the youngest of the majority of my family that are almost all Gen X. Can't relate to r/millennials at all and r/xennials isn't what it used to be.
On the condensed soup issue. I know so many that grew up with the generics in casseroles and they are just not as good or consistent compared to Campbell's. They're also high sodium and cost for the nutrition. There are better options for less when it comes to eating. I am just now finding out about unsalted varieties and I use those in my casseroles and Crock-Pots but I only buy them on sale. I also remember a time around fifteen to twenty years ago these soups were just demonized by magazines and TV cooking shows and segments as the worst thing you could cook with.
As for eating canned soup there are just so many more options for the microwave or air fryer. Or even pantry.
I'm still firmly on team canned soup. It's the one thing I keep for my lowest energy meals and for emergencies, but it's rarely Campbell's and I always choose the lowest sodium options.
Calm-Tale-4052@reddit (OP)

I remember getting it in a metal can and using the church key to put two holes in the lid. We'd put a plastic lid in it and keep it in the cupboard.

I remember when I was prob around 3, sneaking downstairs to see my older sister (she was either 4 or 5) with the can upright, drinking it, but more was on the floor and her face. We were supposed to be napping. I also remember her getting her butt beat after that!

One thing I liked to eat as a kid was Steak-umm sandwiches, and yes, I know it's shit, lol. I have some in my freezer right now.
ThirstyWolfSpider@reddit
They still exist? I haven't seen them in decades.
I thought that, like Minute Steaks, they were a product category that just disappeared long ago. I just checked my local grocery stores' sites, and nope, not available here in L.A.
Efficient_Market1234@reddit
Not only that, they've really embraced social media/meme culture. They've been referring to themselves as "frozen beef sheets," and last time I checked, they'd post all kinds of weirdly deep stuff that had nothing to do with their product. And at one point, they had limited edition "beef sheets" that were literally bedsheets with a picture of Steak-umm "meat" all over them. It's a whole thing.
They also have a chicken version, and I guess some others. My store has the beef and chicken, although IMHO, the chicken tastes of nothing. I can also buy a store brand of it, but it's not as good.
Informal_Daikon_9812@reddit

“EWG's air pollution tests found that Comet Disinfectant Cleanser Powder emitted 146 different chemicals, including some that have been linked to cancer, asthma and reproductive disorders. The most toxic chemicals detected - formaldehyde, benzene, CHLORFORM and toluene - are not listed on the label.” CBS News: EWG's "Hall of Shame" of toxic household cleaners
PS Environmental Working Group is amazing. They’re the leading advocacy group that builds all the databases on products, the dirty dozen for produce, skin care, etc. You can even use their tap water database, enter your zip code, and get a literal itemized list of everything in your tap water and how much it exceeds healthy levels.

It was hilarious.
Bob_12_Pack@reddit
I’m a Dukes guy but on occasion I try other mayos looking for a cheaper alternative to make ranch dressing with. I recently discovered one called Blue Plate that’s pretty good.
ShirleyApresHensive@reddit
Blue Plate is very good, I highly recommend adding it to the rotation.
Dukes has extra egg yolk and more acidic zing where Blue Plate doesn’t have as much extra egg yolk. Hellman’s/ Best Foods uses lemon and vinegar, as well as whole egg (including the white) to give their recipe its personality.
I love all of them and usually have at least two of the three around to use for different purposes.

Barkeeper's Friend cleanser. My mom had the Revere Ware copper-bottom pan set, and we used the BK cleanser to keep them shiny on the bottom. Those pans lasted FOREVER.
SarahJaneB17@reddit
I've got my mom's revere ware pans and use them just about every day. They are definitely indestructible. Some of her pyrex too. the paint on them is long gone from her dishwasher, but dang, still going strong.
Round-Public435@reddit
I have ONE piece of my mom's Pyrex refrigerator dish set (the blue one - I use it as a butter dish). Same deal here - the paint is dulled from decades of washing, but those dishes are so durable!
SarahJaneB17@reddit
I also use it for butter. A stick of butter! and the butter knife fit in it perfectly. I have a couple of the little formerly red ones too, and the large formerly yellow one.
Round-Public435@reddit
My mom had the full set too, but the other pieces went to other family members when she died - I refused to let go of the blue one.

I found the SOS hiding on the top shelf. Went back to the house and scrubbed all of the buildup off the bottom of their pans. She kept telling me it wasn't necessary. And then the jaw-dropped faces when they could actually see pan metal on all of their pots.

Comet was a staple in my house as well. I don't necessarily use it now, but I will NEVER get rid of that smell in my memory. I would use it on my hands if they got oily from changing the oil in my car and that smell would be with me for, what seemed like, days!
The only time I would really use it (and put up with that smell) is if it was a last resort.

Along the same lines, once a year I make myself a Cheeze Whiz and bacon sandwich on toasted white bread. What’s the point of Comet? My parents used to make me use it to clean the tub, stripped off the enamel coating and made it super difficult to clean. After I moved out, I just used Clorox spray and it cleaned easily.
golgol12@reddit
Comet isn't intended to be used on plastic, it has abrasive in it. You use it on hard surfaces and the abrasive works to remove anything stuck on it. Many less expensive bath tubs are plastic. Tubs are big and heavy and large. plastic is light and flexible. Much easier to install, manufacture, and transport.

I prefer the liquid or spray Comet, but I still buy it.
Wet Ones. Better than gel hand sanitizers. It has a nicer smell, isn't sticky, and doesn't dry out your hands as much. Plus they remind me of my paternal grandmother. She kept a canister in her car decades before people kept pocket-sized bottles of hand sanitizer on themselves or you had the hand sanitizer stations in public places. She'd always use one or two wipes before stepping into any place, public or private.

I've just realized that great marketing/advertising could lead to generational sales for your product. The amount of products in my house that I buy simply because that's what my Mom used is endless. Some examples would be Tide, Comet, Pine-Sol, Pledge, Charmin, Bounty, SOS Pads, Crest, Dove, Bounce, Scope and if I still had hair I would probably be looking for the Suave if they still make it. This list could easily carry over to food products as well.
