Is it rude to not say thank you and please?

Given that OP has answered other comments in this thread and has now deleted the post, I'm going to gather that it isn't their culture, it's "culture", as in an excuse so nobody can argue with them.

I'm not meaning to sound judgemental. I know some cultures think it's rude to say please/thank you to close family members because it's insulting. Others bow their heads to show gratitude.

I think it's a massive show of character that you don't say please or thank you when you're asking people to do their job. For me, it *does* say you're a rude person, because you think they're beneath you to show them politeness and common decency.

In the UK, do you think University and degrees are worth it?

Anything with a direct career. For example, medicine will get you into medicine. Avoid anything with transferrable skills that don't have a direct career, for example anything English related. I did English Lang and ended up doing a Level 3 (GCSE level!) apprenticeship in marketing.

It's not about being separate people. Weddings are meant to be family occasions. Being married to someone means you are part of a family. OP's wife not being invited suggests to me that the bride/groom don't extend that feeling towards OP's wife - they don't consider her part of the family enough to be invited to a family occasion. That is 100% going to be hurtful.

This exactly. Marriage is meant to be the invitation of joining a family. OP is family so, so is the wife by definition. I can understand OP 100%. As you say, boyfriend/girlfriend is different.

My boyfriend can't sit still. He always says he'd continue to go to work (mechanic) but lower his days and do passion projects as you say. I fully believe he wouldn't last the week without being extremely bored and desperate to go back to work.

What is your opinion of charities (in general)? Do you support any?

I don't have any problem with charities apart from those who spend their time blocking entrances/exits and checkouts begging for your time and generally making life more difficult.

Why so much hostility towards AC?

Posted by Main_Masterpiece8414@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 302 comments

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

I think it possibly comes from a place of ignorance / not wanting to admit that it's getting worse. All over X, it's full of people saying "back in my day this would be a lovely summer's day." *It's spring* and we're already breaking records. It's not a lovely summer's day, it's a sign of things to come. People just don't want to admit it.

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

I'm currently not in the position to install AC - renting - however it is 100% a conversation I've had with my partner about doing when we get on the housing ladder and find our "forever home". It doesn't take a genius to see that these hot days are becoming a lot more common, and will continue to do so. A little bit of forward planning goes a long way and I'd rather be prepared. It seems like the type of purchase that you will never complain about spending the money on when it's 30-40° outside and you otherwise wouldn't sleep, even if that's just 1 day a year (unlikely). Maybe it is an investment, but a worthwhile one surely?

Why don't we have air conditioning on our public transport?

Posted by Fun_Yogurtcloset1012@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 63 comments

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

Absolutely. Went to London in October and realised the tube was like travelling in the depths of hell, hated every second of it. My bus is boiling anytime it goes over 20 degrees. My car's air con is always on low. It absolutely wouldn't just be used on the hottest days of the year.

Whatever you do OP, DO NOT use sunbeds or any sort of tanning substance that you have to ingest, including nasal sprays, drops and tablets - [they are not safe](https://www.cancerresearchuk.org/about-cancer/causes-of-cancer/sun-uv-and-cancer/fake-tan-and-melanotan-injections).

Has anyone else experienced “work PTSD” after a toxic job?

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

Working in a call centre (sales) did that for me. We were customer's first point of contact because they couldnt get through to other departments. They would call raging at us, and when we also couldnt get hold of other departments, they would take it out on us. Also being micromanaged and every call tracked, every mistake scrutinised and penalised. Stressful times, the commission wasn't worth it. Hated that job.

Travelling vs Saving in early 20s, what would you do?

Posted by ar2002-@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 152 comments

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

I want to add that it 100% depends on your living situation too. I'm 23, and as much as I really want to travel, my home life with my Mum is extremely toxic and emotionally abusive. I have no life or freedom to do whatever I want because of her. So me and my long term partner are saving to move out together, and will plan holidays once that's done. There would be absolutely no point me going abroad and spending all my savings on a 3-6 month holiday if I've got to come back home after it. That would completely wreck my mental health and I would absolutely rather wait.

Is anyone put off by the increasing child-friendliness of a lot of attractions around the country?

Posted by not-much@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 163 comments

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

I think general disdain for children is becoming extremely more common nowadays. Kids just existing seems to be a source of irritation and disrespect for a lot of people, sometimes even when they're literally just minding their own business. We should have adult-only places / times (holiday resorts, bars, restaurants mainly) just like we have child-friendly areas / times (cinemas etc.) but I don't think National Trust areas should be one of these places. Areas of natural beauty and education should be for all.

Were you hit as a child by your parents/carers?

Posted by don__gately@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 338 comments

melancholyy-scorpio@reddit

If you have to hit a defenceless child to teach them right from wrong then you are a bad parent and a bad teacher. Assault has no place in disciplining / punishing children. Consequences and punishment, yes, but not assault. You wouldn't hit a dog for bad behaviour. You wouldn't hit an adult for being unruly, disobedient or rude. Your logic is deeply flawed.

Born early 2000s, never smacked. My brother was mid 90s, he was never smacked either. My Mum and her two brothers were born in the 70s and my grandparents never smacked them. I'm now realising they must be in the minority in their generation.
