What question is guaranteed to get loads of replies ... but none that actually answer it?
Posted by mrsilver76@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 160 comments
Some questions on r/AskUK seem to generate well meaning replies that completely miss what was actually being asked.
For example:
- Someone asked about t-shirt recommendations for a 15st man. Instead of shops or brands, most people told him to lose weight.
- Someone asked a reasonably simple question about Facebook. Instead of details on how to fix it, the replies were mostly “just leave, you’ll feel so much better”.
- Someone asked how much interest they’d pay on a credit card debt if they could only cover half of the minimum amount. Instead of easily calculable numbers, a lot of people told them that they should always pay off the minimum in full, with some people going so far to recommend avoiding credit entirely.
So what question would get loads of replies (that may or may not be good advice in general) but doesn't help with what the person is asking right now?
Hour-Estate-2962@reddit
Questions like 'what are the positives of having kids' often seem to be 50% child-free people commenting why they didn't want kids.
MonkeyHamlet@reddit
Anything to do with weddings will net you a hundred anecdotes about how they got married for £4 and wore a binbag.
AnxiousTerminator@reddit
It's like a weird pissing contest to see who can be the most frugal. Like sure if you are both on minimum wage maybe don't take out a mortgage for a 5 day 6 figure destination wedding, but there is a balance where it is fine to want to get married somewhere nice, have the people you like there, eat nice food and look good doing it. It doesn't make you a bad or frivolous person to want to wear a wedding dress, have a big fancy cake and a local band to play some corny covers of whatever it is you and your spouse enjoy. It honestly feels like sour grapes from people who had a 4 person registry office affair to save money and are now bitter that other people have different priorities.
MonkeyHamlet@reddit
It’s a party! A nice party for people to enjoy! With cake and dancing and other nice things! What’s wrong with that?
ChrisRR@reddit
This happens in real life too. If I tell people that I'm not married yet because it's expensive, they always reply oh but you can get married for like 50 quid at the registry office and go to the pub!
No I don't want to totally cheap out, I just want to wait until I'm a bit more financially stable
folklovermore_@reddit
And how anyone who has more than the cheapest registry office ceremony and a drink in the pub afterwards is a frivolous wastrel on the fast track to divorce.
R1ceKai@reddit
Something that annoys me about this a sub a lot. OP will ask a question, something like what to order in a food chain or do in a certain destination. Instead of helpful answers, people use it to trash the certain food place or location.
The question was not that.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
That, or get increasingly angry at your personal opinion/anecdote is one I seem to run in to regularly. I was chatting cleaning under a thread on here with person a and b, person c joined in getting angry that I had opinions on how I liked to clean my house and that I have conversations about cleaning with my family - latter of which, I have to have because I care for them on a daily basis. I was left in awe honestly!
Max_Power_332@reddit
The most downvotes I ever received here were a) when I said I don’t care about shoes in my house and closely followed by b) when I said Cadbury’s chocolate hadn’t changed as much as people told themselves it had.
itsfourinthemornin@reddit
That sounds right! I get a little whiplash in this sub sometimes if I've happened to comment on more than one post aha.
a) I agree, except living room and bedrooms
b) agree for some bars, I've come across some that are gross/changed, others are seemingly fine though. I prefer Milka these days anyway!
Safe-Professional556@reddit
Not even just this sub, it seems to be a Reddit thing. Ask a serious question and get a mixture of humourous, pointless, non or tangential answers.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
The DIYUK subreddit is a pain in the arse for that.
Safe-Professional556@reddit
Weirdly asked a question there the other day. Got sound advice, I mean they clearly hadn't read the whole question but the advice offered was what I needed.
Max_Power_332@reddit
DIYUK is pretty much the destination for know it all bellends who will sooner judge your choices than answer the practical question you asked.
oktimeforplanz@reddit
I asked a question there once and all I got was replies basically questioning how it was possible that I didn't know how to do the thing I wanted to do... I'd tried googling it but since I didn't know basically any of the terminology involved, fuck me for thinking I could ask a sub that's about DIY for help and maybe get some I suppose!
Serious_Escape_5438@reddit
Or judgemental answers.
SatinwithLatin@reddit
Don't get me wrong, I like how UK subs don't take themselves too seriously. But that's the kind of banter that belongs in r/CasualUK, not here. People are coming here for answers, let's not fuck around.

Sea-Still5427@reddit
Right, if I want unhelpful answers I could just talk to family.
h00dman@reddit
I had that the other day when I was asking what foods young kids like, because a friend and their kid were coming to stay for a few days.
A lot of people were very helpful but I also had a lot of responses telling me to ask my friend.
Ok, sure, but I was asking for ideas.

snarfalicious420@reddit
When people do own up to it they then get wildly downvoted even if they're answering the question lol
AnxiousTerminator@reddit
Tbf I saw one the other day about not washing hands after the toilet, and was astonished by the reasoning, so I did downvote "my d*ck isn't dirty" and "I just don't really care, it's a waste of time" and similar responses because I feel these people should know their behaviour is gross and selfish.
Brakiss78@reddit
Not so much on here but on local Facebook groups, people ask “what’s going on at (location), just seen loads of police” and then the replies are always things like “hope everyone’s ok.” Nobody gives a shit what you hope, they want to know what’s happening.

There was a fire near our flat once and we went out to move my car away. As we were walking back some bloke who had apparently come to spectate went "bet it was those Asians" before turning round to realise who exactly he was talking to. As if we would be setting fire to a building 50 metres from our home just for kicks.
ChrisRR@reddit
I had to leave a local facebook group because of one guy who kept posting every time someone "suspicious" walked down the road, with photos

Along the same lines, people asking specific questions about products on shopping sites, such as 'is this charger compatible with X?' and receiving responses like 'Not sure, I don't have X' or 'I don't have X, I have Y and it works fine'.
SaltyName8341@reddit
This happens on the Manchester sub far too much
neilm1000@reddit
Since I moved to Stockport the Manchester one has largely disappeared from my feed (watch it reappear now). If it isn't that it's 'aren't the christmas markets expensive this year.'
Laziness_Personified@reddit
My favourite reply to this is "I heard it was a man with a crossbow"
Educational_You_6835@reddit
Haven’t you considered it would be better to go for a walk than ask this question on Reddit. That way the t-shirt might fit you and you could afford to pay off that credit card - and you wouldn’t be tempted to use Facebook.
ohsaycanyourock@reddit
Someone the other day asked for a good Italian chain - most of the replies were just saying how terrible chains are, and/or saying 'just make it yourself'. I can't/don't want to make it myself and I like a reliable meal! That sort of snobbery really winds me up.
getoutmywayatonce@reddit
People move as a very contrarian crowd on here when it comes to food. When it comes to chains or nandos or chicken shops or something, the consensus is everyone’s a bloody renowned food critic simply repulsed by these (very normal) things. But when someone mentions shopping in Waitrose or M&S people hate that too, call them a moron, and get on their high horse saying they’re perfectly happy to just help themselves to whatever’s in the bins round the back of Lidl.
pajamakitten@reddit
While also loving Greggs and thinking a supermarket meal deal is a brilliant lunch.
getoutmywayatonce@reddit
Unless of course it’s someone else posting that, in which case suddenly only a “troglodyte” would eat such crap
ChrisRR@reddit
"takeaways are so expensive! Make it yourself for cheaper!"
Takeaways have always been expensive. People are paying for convenience, not quality
neilm1000@reddit
So there was one recently about buying fish, and OP was really clear they could only get to a nearby Lidl for the time being. Didn't say why, limited mobility maybe. Anyway, it was really really clear about Lidl.
Obviously the comments were all "I buy mine from an artisan fish supplier who dives for pearls and supplies my cod in organic mesh woven by elves in the Atlas Mountains" or "why do you use a supermarket, you should use a fishmonger you high street killing bastard". And so on. Followed by some useful comments.
Thomasinarina@reddit
There wa a question on here the other day about what trends were clearly over.
It was just full of people posting about things they didn’t like, but are still blindingly popular.
neilm1000@reddit
Salted caramel, hot honey, pulled pork. Those are the three I remember from that.
I was tempted to put in phrenology, chatelaines and tussie mussies but I just knew I'd get responses along the lines of "I'm a skull interpreting, belt loop using, nosegay carrying person", or people claiming to have seen people with tussie mussies on the tube. If it comes up again I might chuck in random trends from centuries ago just to see the results.
Thomasinarina@reddit
Three things which are still very popular!
pajamakitten@reddit
Is pulled pork still popular?
neilm1000@reddit
Yeah, I've seen it on sale/on the menu in a few places.
DrH1983@reddit
A recent example was somebody asking about Apple ID verification requiring credit card or driving license.
Most of the replies were "☝️🤓 actually you should have a credit card to build credit rating! Why don't you have a credit card?" "What kind of grown man doesn't have a credit card?" etc
pajamakitten@reddit
If I am thinking of the right thread, OP did have a misunderstanding about credit cards though.
neilm1000@reddit
I was in that thread, when I linked to news articles backing up what OP was saying I got downvoted and told I was wrong!
Brilliant-Figure-149@reddit
I'd have been all over that, pointing out that it's "licenCe". But full marks for correct use of "driving" and not "driver's".
DrH1983@reddit
I do rely on my phones auto-correct too much so things like that often slip through.

Strong_Access_8179@reddit

Asleep-Software-4160@reddit
Any one of the daily doom posts about cost of living, because the answer is just "Things cost more now, cut back or earn more."
cragglerock93@reddit
Every fucking day. They're not even questions, just rants. 'DAE think prices are out of control????', 'How is anyone affording to live???', 'Why do we accept such low wages in this country????'. None of them are asked to elicit actual answers, just outraged (sometimes justifiably) people agreeing with them.
Nobody wants to hear it, but airports are pretty much busier than ever, takeaways and restaurants too. There's a lot of people with not much money but a lot with decent money to burn too. I see it at my own job - people buying things that are clearly overpriced where there's better value alternatives, but when you earn enough you don't really feel the need to save every penny.
pajamakitten@reddit
'Does anyone else think Dairy Milk has gone downhill?'
How have people like that only just noticed this?
ChrisRR@reddit
That one's the worst because the change was 15 years ago. But people post absolute lies as if it was changed a month ago
If they didn't notice 15 years ago, why are they only noticing now? Or is it just that they just want to join in with the outrage
pajamakitten@reddit
Tangentially related but I saw a post from someone complaining Ricicles had been discontinued because they were a huge fan, except they had only found this out from a post on here this year. How can you be a big fan of Ricicles and not noticed that they had been discontinued over a decade ago?
oktimeforplanz@reddit
I like how when those posts come up, asking "are you cutting back on anything?" Or that sort of thing, you'll get downvoted to fuck if you answer saying you aren't. You weren't really asking everyone then, were you? If you're gonna downvote a sincere answer.

Isgortio@reddit
Having been in 2 different relationships in the past where I ignored everyone's advice to leave and I ended up just getting hurt in the end and learning things the hard way, I can see why others are quick to jump to "it won't get better, leave".

That issue is compounded by the number of Americans lurking in the sub, imo
adamMatthews@reddit
I’d never heard of WhiteClaw before and then suddenly saw it mentioned loads online, people were talking about it as if it’s some super strong party drink that’ll get you sloshed in minutes.
Checked it out, it’s a shitty seltzer with 1.5 units per can. Sure you can get drunk if you have loads of it, but it’s just more expensive than other drinks that are stronger or taste better (including other seltzers).
It feels like discussions about alcohol online are just posted by 12 year olds who’ve tried a sip of one drink once and are now pretending to be experts.

Yeah, I see it on travel subs, someone travelling with 3 small children to a rural area or something, being told 3 train changes is far easier. Or bikes over cars when talking about urban travel. I feel like a lot of these types of questions tend to be engagement bait and an actual answer isn’t as important to the OP as amassing imaginary internet points.
If something has a definitive answer then chances are that a Reddit post about it already exists. If it doesn’t then an answer is likely only a Google search away.
So I can only assume that a lot of questions are posted by people with weak Google-Fu, the chronically lazy, or those who value engagement over an actual answer.
Of course a lot can be said about literacy levels too. Perhaps an OP has found an answer elsewhere, but is unable to parse it. They then hope that posting the question on Reddit will net them an answer that can r/Eli5.
Anything inflammatory or in the public consciousness will draw out plenty of people with opinions that may only be tangential to the posed question.
mrsilver76@reddit (OP)
I used to think it was the chronically lazy too - until I realised that I'm in a bunch of subs where the effort to put three words into Google would have been substantially less than writing a post.
