Odd things our fathers did in 70’s

Almost all men that grew up in the earlier 1900's carried pocket handkerchiefs. This was not weird, but very normal. Kleenex's weren't popular as a household staple. Many times the men would be out working and would need it, and have a box of tissues outside working just doesn't work.

It’s literally nothing. You do some pooping, then go take a nap. You wake up in a bed and go home. Don’t sweat it, it’s really nothing.

My baby girl just got married and is living in a different state 1,000 miles away.. MAKE the effort to stay close, it’s easy to drift. As hard as it is for me, I care deeply knowing she is living the life SHE wants to live, not the one that I prefer. We’re extremely happy with her marriage and husband, but would love to have her closer to home. But, she’s living where she wants to live, and is married to the person she loves. I have to be ok with that, and not selfish. It’s not easy.

Guess Who's Hiring for Their New Casino in Dallas! (It's the Sands Corp)

News flush, these jobs are for technical positions that have nothing to do with the physical locations they are posted for. Cloud and development jobs can happen anywhere. Many tech jobs are based in Dallas that serve their companies based in other cities and states.

Anyone have a car pickup service for DFW/Love Field they recommend? We will have a toddler in a car seat and I don’t want to risk taking a wild Uber. Unable to take our own car as well (take off DFW land Love Field) thank you

Men who grew their hair long late or still have long hair?

Posted by jtsa5@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 331 comments

hernondo@reddit

At some point long hair on men just starts looking bad. Thinning is the obvious answer, but it looks like you’re trying to hold onto the 70’s for too long. You’ll LOOK better with shorter and cleaner haircuts, and probably even look younger.

Me too. My in-laws have a 3 story house full of stuff I’m dreading. They cannot get rid of anything on their own through donations, etc, so they keep sending truckloads of stuff to their kids so they don’t feel guilty getting rid of something that has “value”.

We spend most of our lives accumulating “stuff”, and 98% of that stuff is only mostly useful and valuable to us. Be cognizant of what you’re filling your house with.

Do you think you’ll be ready to retire in the next 15 to 20 years?

Posted by AdDapper4220@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 469 comments

hernondo@reddit

I’m not so much worried about the retirement money, short of healthcare. Healthcare is going to be a very serious to many Americans trying to retire. And it’s hard to envision yourself as an old person needing a lot more healthcare, so it doesn’t weigh quite as heavy in your mind today for most. But, you MUST have a plan for healthcare, or retirement is a non-starter for almost all of us wanting to retire with a “normal” amount of retirement funds.

DFW Airport

Posted by Sufficient-Fudge-968@reddit | Dallas | View on Reddit | 7 comments

hernondo@reddit

You’ll be fine. Yes, there are multiple terminals at DFW. If you land in one and leave in another, use the Skylink tram to travel between the 2. So know that there’s 2 trams, basically one going in each direction. Makes it quicker to get to another terminal than having to take the full circle. You don’t need to exit the security gates to do this. If you do exit, you can technically do the same thing with busses, but it’s slower and you’ll have to go through security again. Just know where your next flight is leaving from, and follow the signage on the ceilings if you need to go to another terminal.

Does Gen X do class reunions?

Posted by LadyNorbert@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 1618 comments

hernondo@reddit

Facebook and other social media platforms have almost made class reunions irrelevant. You connect with the people you cared about in school, and you don't have to talk to the people you never liked back then. A lot of folks are more spread out nowadays as well, so the travel becomes more of an issue.

Don’t try to tell an 18 year old they need to decide the rest of their life right now. Narrow it down a few interest areas, then take a few classes to see if any of them stick. Even taking a gap year after high school is fine.

You’ll have to check the specific policy. Usually you’ll try to blow the lines dry if possible. Dripping isn’t going to work.

The grid itself was a major problem last time. This time they are forecasted to have enough power. That being said, a lot of ice buildup on power lines, etc can cause localized issues, which are not related to Ercot. Yes, I think you should be in the safest place possible, but that's pretty subjective depending on localized power transmission and physical infrastructure.

Honestly you get accustomed to the heat. It's still hot, but not unlivable. If you come from a very cold climate, you actually learn to hate the extreme cold more than the extreme heat. And yeah, DFW has 3 of the top 10 deadliest highways in America. Yay!

Find a day where friends and family can just come and take stuff of what you don't want and they do. Leftover old beds, dressers, nightstands, chairs, couches will typically all go. You can back up a trailer and take the rest to a goodwill or something. If there's enough stuff, you could also hire a company to come in and do an estate sale. People will come from miles around to buy stuff right out of the house. I don't think you'll ever change your mom's mind, because it's valuable TO HER. You don't have to convince your mom of anything really. When she's gone, find what's valuable to you, and liquidate the rest.

Who's still 'Low Fat'

Posted by Sunshine2625@reddit | GenX | View on Reddit | 137 comments

Low fat was a marketing scheme developed by companies making sugar products to make fat a villain. Meanwhile, American waistlines having exploded since our consumption of sugar and related products have exploded. You can almost map the direct timelines of American obesity levels to sugar and high fructose corn syrup consumption levels. Good fats are GREAT for you.
