Men who grew their hair long late or still have long hair?

I grew mine out in my late teens and then chopped it for a job interview. Started growing it back 3 years ago and I'm pretty sure no one who knows me likes it.
Any men with long hair?
Caliopebookworm@reddit
My husband has long hair. He started growing it when his mother died (she would not have put up with long hair) and now shaves his head about every five years.
CaroCogitatus@reddit
Same. Grew it mid-back length in the pandemic and then finally went to a stylist, not SuperCuts, for a hairstyle.
Now I'm rocking the Jim Morrison look. Not sure if spouse likes it, but I do. Rock on, brother.

Dude... i had metal hair in HS, and i was assured that the hair thing was always genetically tied to the grandfather having hair. I was stoked! my grandfather dies with a head full of hair. I was gonna be the cool grey log hair dude. I got little left.
Prestigious-S1RE@reddit
Grew my hair out long bottom of back and would wear it in ponytail at work as it needed to be out of the way. After work always had it in pony tail as I thought it looked a bit feminine down. Realized if I don’t wear it down ever then why have it long? So I cut it. Never grew it back yet.
HarryHaywire@reddit
I had hair down past my elbows from high school until I was 30. I shaved it all off, then grew it back out again a couple years later. Then I cut it AGAIN in my 40's. I grew it out again to my shoulders after the pandemic, but the ravages of time have done a number on my hairline and my wife told me if I grew a skullet she was divorcing me, so now it's buzzed again.
ladyrose403@reddit
gen x wife here, w/ a gen x husband. we met in the army. the day he got out, he said he was never cutting his hair again. i trim it myself about every six months or so because the tips are getting ragged. it reaches his waist easily. he also has a full beard, which i force him to let me trim once in a great while, he's due again.
iwastherefordisco@reddit
Yep. Wore it long all my life and every year I get it cut brutally short to shock people, then let it grow again.
Mine goes naturally wavy/curly which is a pain in the ass to wash/manage, but I'm told not to complain by guys who don't have hair.
61 and still no gray, yay! Thanks Mom and Dad.
zombie263739@reddit
Long hair, here. The shortest it's been is about an inch or 2 below the shoulders for the past 25+ years. Lucky for me, my wife loves it.
303FPSguy@reddit
Had hair down the middle of my back in high school. But Boomers hate that, so I had to cut my fuckin hair. Then, I started losing my hair in my 30s.
Been bald for 20 years and still miss my long hair from when I was 17.
I’ll never get over the Boomers and their need for conformity.
rammer-jammer71@reddit
Probably more of a Greatest Generation/Silent Generation thing that just perpetuated. The Baby Boomers kind of brought long hair back. This incessant need to blame them for everything is getting weird. My niece said they should be rounded up and put in camps. Right in front of her grandmother. Wild stuff.
honeybadgerdad@reddit
In my 50s. Wanted long hair. Same issue. School, jobs, etc. Grew it when I got my career job, until I had to go to court for some stuff. Cut it. Also, started balding, so never grew it back. When I did let it go for a while, I got called a baby bird. 😂 A good, tho. It's just hair.
Now, with our son, he can do almost anything he wants to do with his hair, because, up umtil a certain point, it'll grow back. When he teases me about not having a ton of hair, I just poi t to my head and remind him, this is your future, buddy. Laugh it up while you've still got it. 😂
Far_Oven_3302@reddit
I just chopped off my beard and hair for my 50th. Planning to never shave or get a haircut ever again.
Doordasheasthartford@reddit
I wish I am bald now
FatherOfLights88@reddit
50 y/o. Had very long hair in my twenties. Short in my thirties. Started growing it long again back in 2014.
I get it cut twice yearly to keep the ends from looking shaggy. This slows the appearance of growth, but makes the hair look more full. I take a lot of care with my hair, and am working my way toward a very, very long braid. My hair is currently most of the way down my back, but braided up is shorter than I'd like.
goaway432@reddit
Sorry,my back hair doesn't grow that long lol
john-bkk@reddit
Later into Covid I let my hair grow out, and went a couple of years without a haircut, long enough that it was long. In visiting my family, back east in PA, nearly two years ago my son was getting his hair buzz-cut, so I joined him, and looked the part better spending a month there. I haven't cut it since, and it's only now at shoulder length again. I don't like the look more, or less, but it's really easy; put it in a tie or clip and that's it.

Grew it out after the military. Donated 7 times. Now 59 and just let it grow out.
Somewhere out there are 7 wigs of auburn hair worn by cancer patients.
Fuck cancer.

Both my boys have done this. They are only on their first donation though.

creeva@reddit
I had longhair through my early 30s. Well I would it grow it out for a year or so and then cut it all off and do it again (made it to the middle of my back a few times). I stopped when I gray hair started to dominate. I didn’t want the wizard look for myself.
Formal-Cut-4923@reddit
Now I want the wizard look.

creeva@reddit
I have no problem with others going full wizard, just wasn’t for me.

55... Have had long hair off and on since my 20s... Just grew it out again... 2 years strong now.

Early 50's - decided to let my curls grow out about a year ago. Gettin close to Jerry Garcia / Sam Elliott hair and it's awesome.
dis690640450cc@reddit
I grew my hair long in my 20s then, went to fully shaved because I was expecting to go bald based on family history and stupidity thought that doing it myself was giving me some power over it. Then I didn’t show any signs of losing my hair in my 30s so I grew it long again. Then I got tired of paying for haircuts and buzzed it all off. Then my wife informed me that I liked me better with hair so I grew it back and found a really good barber that would cut it for less than 10 bucks and was a five minute walk from my house. Then I turned 50 and the family genetics came in with vengeance. Now it buzzed again because there is no much left of it. (What a stupid story)

Had phases of long then short hair since college. Career did not have dress/appearance code. Now closer to 60 than 50. After COVID, cut hair and gone clean shaven (had goatee no stache). Hair still full but turning much more salt than pepper. At the age it happens in my family. Also less maintenance other than regular cuts.
DubbulG@reddit
Currently 54 years old with a full head of hair, I kept it very long for 5 years or so since COVID because why not. Last summer I kept getting too hot and cut it off. I look 10x better and it's so much less of a hassle, I doubt I will ever go long again.
RealisAurelioS@reddit
60m - older GenXer raises hand.
I hand long hair in HS.
Chopped it off when my career started and had short corp hair for decades. Very successful career.
But in my 50s, got shafted by a global company.
I sued, won and threw up a big middle finger at The Man.
Grew my hair to my traps; returned to strength training; returned to my heavy metal roots and returned to computer programming instead of mgmt.
Never been happier.
I'm blessed w good hair genes.
funkyg73@reddit
I’ve had short hair my whole life but my younger brother has had long hair and beard since his late teens. He’s now 47.
tanhauser_gates_@reddit
I shaved my head once I started losing it past a certain point. Not doing fringe.
Hedonistic_Yinzer@reddit
I started with the mullet in the mid-80s. I cut it off around the mid '90s. I have kept it high and tight ever since. 21 months ago I started growing it out again. I haven't had a haircut since. It's all the same length, and no mullet. My better half seems to like it.
ConversationBoth6127@reddit
48 now, worn it long since high school, roughly mid-back. Been a metalhead since my early teens, just feels right on me. I’ve worked corporate jobs for the last 20 years. Always kept it neat and tied back in the office. My wife has two joking conditions that could result in divorce:cutting my hair short or buying her anything pink. If I start losing it, Rogaine.
juniper3411@reddit
I think the metal head qualifier is important haha. Same with my husband who’s also in a metal band. He’s only cut his hair once.
juniper3411@reddit
The hubby has long hair and always has. He’s 34 though. He likes the older ladies (I’m baby Gen X). He’s in a professional career as well.
TheVioletEmpire@reddit
Full head of hair here. Had long hair in high school. Cut it toward the end of my senior year.
Now I get a haircut every two weeks. Sometimes I think about growing it back out when I retire.
Beerinspector@reddit
Grew mine out during Covid and kept it. I too am lucky to have a full head of hair in my mid-50’s. However I’m thinking of cutting it because I always have it in a ponytail to keep it out of my eyes.
roanokephotog@reddit
I had close, spikey hair for 20 years and grew it out in my 40s, so many more options😂. It's funny how people's perception changes with something as simple as hair though. As long as I have it I'll probably have it long, fuck the "establishment".
OAKRAIDER64@reddit
Yep half way down back, Feathered top same style as I've always worn it , parted down the middle. I got this cut in the early 70s and still rock it.
Signal_Glittering@reddit
I hate long hair on men. My husband grew his out and it hasn’t changed
daemonhat@reddit
up until i was 12-13 i had the side part, tapered in the back. after that i let it grow out and had a mullet starting high school. graduated in '90 and went into the navy a month later and got my head shaved. got the boot a month later with an "erroneous enlistment" discharge and got a job as a security guard so had to keep it cut short. i quit in '93 and aside from keeping it trimmed up i haven't had an actual haircut since then. and while i've always had thinnish hair, it's all still there and hasn't gotten any thinner.
threedogdad@reddit

threedogdad@reddit
I always had very short hair, but out of the blue 10 years ago I just stopped cutting it so it's been long ever since. It's a surprise to people that haven't seen me in years, but otherwise it's pretty normal for men to have long hair where I live.
Imaginary_Damage_502@reddit
I've had long hair since 1993
Alcophile@reddit
Mine has been long off and on since high school. It's long now and I have no immediate plans to cut it off...
amazing-haves-34@reddit
During the pandemic I grew my hair out. Funny thing is, when my hair was long all I heard was negative comments. When I cut my hair, all I heard was “why did you do this?”. I cut my hair because I’m lazy and hate the maintenance. But it was definitely validating when people started letting me know how much they liked it long.
amazing-haves-34@reddit
That being said, someone I know also grew out their hair at the same time and it looks awful because the ponytail they put it in does not cover up the bald spot in the back and makes their hairline look even worse.
HippyKidz1@reddit
15 years was down to my waist. Just chopped it back to that 80s skater cut we all know and love.
wraithsonic@reddit
I had straightened hair for a while in college to about shoulder length. I cut it off when I started my professional life.
I loc’d my hair about three years ago (Juneteenth will be the third anniversary) and my hair is the longest it’s ever been at about a quarter way down my back.
w3woody@reddit
60; let my hair grow out during the pandemic and never looked back. My wife seems to like it, and for me it has the benefit that it’s an easy distinguishable feature: I’ve been to stores where one salesperson hands us off to another, sight unseen, seamlessly, because more often than not I’m the only guy in the store with long wavy hair.
CheekMaleficent3654@reddit
I'm 61, ive now got long hair for the first time in my life. Just let it grow. Having to tie it back now.

Krustylang@reddit
Late fifties. Still have long hair. Still play in a rock band.
ziggy_santo5@reddit
yes, currently a year into my mullet. before the pandemic i usually grow it out a few years, then shave my head
typhona@reddit
I wouldn't call it long, but about shoulder length. But its still electric blue
figurativelybland@reddit
I had long hair throughout my late teens and 20s. At my current job, the boss prefers a short haircut, so I've kept mine short back and sides for the last few years, which I don't really like. I have started growing it back out, as I still have plenty of hair, but it looks a bit like Ian Huntley / Spok at present, which isn't a good look.
I always think of this meme when I consider growing my hair back haha.
BT_Artist@reddit
I had long hair for about 12 years, give or take. Mid-80s to late 1990s.
Until my hairline started heading north. I got it cut short for about a year, and eventually said "fuck it" and shaved it all off.
lilred7879@reddit
Worked in corporate America until 3 years ago so I kept it neat and professional for 40 years and now down to my shoulders and the wife loves it so its staying.
tultamunille@reddit
Yup, sheer laziness and refusal to pay for a haircut.
I was a pretty decent barber, forced into it really on tour shaving heads to prevent lice, and growing up in the 70s 80s we tried pretty much every do just for fun.
ceazzzzz@reddit
Last real cut was when I was 15y/o.
Lots of trims and management, but still letting my freak flag fly at fifty five.
D05wtt@reddit
I had my hair the longest it’s been since high school, smack in the middle of the Covid lockdowns because we couldn’t get a haircut. Since then it’s back to the normal short hair.
Also, I’ve been losing hair at the top of my head so if I had longer hair, it’s more noticeably obvious I’m trying to cover up. I already told my hair stylist of 36 years that if I lose anymore, I may just shave it all off.
nrauhauser@reddit
I never had it long until late 20s, chopped it when I turned 30 and my son was two. His reaction to dad with short hair was priceless.
It grows out about once a decade - basically if I get it cut in spring, it's off my neck for the summer, by the next summer it'll be long enough to pull back, so I let it go. I didn't intend that for this summer, I'm kinda on the cusp, it's *almost* long enough. But I *am* in San Francisco so it isn't gonna get all that hot ... maybe.
n_thomas74@reddit
I grew my hair long late, at 11pm
Jbchristy450@reddit
Had a ratt tail in 3rd grade, grew it along with mullet into 5th grade then decided to grow it all out. I could almost sit on my hair by 11th grade. Senior year had a bad car accident and had to shave it all off. Joined military. Bald now but have a long beard.
devilhead668@reddit
Had long hair until my mid 40s, cut it for a while, grew back out during Covid times, cut it again, now growing out just the top with a tight under cut. Just gonna Viking braid it when it’s long enough.
OkKnee7580@reddit
1998 was the last time I cut my hair. Did it so I could start serving bc men didn’t serve back then and my boss said that’s the only way I could serve. He did pay for it and was an “event” at the job. Looking back it was a fucked up thing to do and one reason why I never cut again. Trim it here and then
JakeBanana01@reddit
Was about to turn 60, decided it was time to finally grow out my hair. 18 months later I can actually pull it back.
FletchGordon@reddit
Most of my adult life ive had long hair. Now i have a beard to go with it and look quite a bit like Jack Black
Cvilledog@reddit
Long from HS (when my stepfather couldn’t force haircuts any more) through college. I mean almost to my waist long. Finally cut it when I was about 23 to find a job. Grew it back out through work and more school. Cut it again around 33 and kept it short until a few years ago. I keep it in a bun most days at work. When my kid visited from college and hadn’t seen me in a while, he asked why I looked like an old woman, but I didn’t let it bother me. Weird thing was seeing my dad after a few years’ absence and finding him with long hair and a beard. I didn’t grow up with him and he never had long hair when I was a kid so maybe it’s genetic.
splorp_evilbastard@reddit
Started growing longer it in middle school (6-7th grade). Longest it ever got was about 8-10 inches past my shoulders.
Cut it short in Feb '96 for a job I quit after 3 weeks. Grew it back.
Cut it short for a job in Oct '03. 2 weeks after I started, I saw a guy with hair halfway down his back. Haven't cut it short since.
My hair only grows 4-6" past my shoulders. No bald spot (per my wife), but right where one would be, it's turning white so it LOOKS liked I'm balding.

COVID shutdown 2020 to May 2023: in grad school, which suddenly became online instead of in-person. I figured I had one last shot before nature took its course and it would look like I was trying too hard. Down past my shoulders (+giant Viking beard), cut it for graduation ceremony. Nobody recognized me. It was great to get all that out of my system in relative private.
sinistar2000@reddit
Yeah I grew a long Mohican and I loved it. No one else did though lol I cut it for work.
ZogemWho@reddit
I got a hair cut in 1989 for a job interview. I had a rat tail that was left alone. Hair has not been cut since.
leicanthrope@reddit
Yep. I had it long in college, and I started growing it out again around 2015. I’m going to take full advantage of the fact that I inherited my hair from mom’s side of the family.
dreaminginteal@reddit
Had fairly long hair in HS. Grew it out more in college. Cut it off (except the infamous Rat Tail!) to get a job out of school. Eventually grew it out.
After many, many years I realized that while my hair was FREAKIN GORGEOUS, it didn't work well with my face. So I cut it all off, and suddenly started getting dates. Haven't grown it out since then.
.... I bet it would still be GORGEOUS, but still wouldn't go with the shape of my face ...
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
Women are very split about long hair. Many dislike it but some really love it.
PyroNine9@reddit
I started growing it in high school.
After graduation I got a job assembling and repairing PCs. At that time, ability to do anything with a PC vastly outweighed long hair. Moved on to software development. By the time anyone started thinking about hair length again, I was senior enough to not need to worry about it.
TheSwedishEagle@reddit
Used to have long hair in college. Cut it at graduation. Grew it back about 10 years ago and it's still long but thinning. Thinking of cutting it but I dunno.
Melvinator5001@reddit
I’m 57 and grew my hair out starting in Spring 2024. Started because my Mom’s health was deteriorating didn’t have time for haircuts. When she passed December 2024 it was just past that weird phase. Wife said the hell with it go for it. She assumed by the next summer it would be cut. Still haven’t cut it. I found it’s easier to take care of and I can actually wear hats. Put it in a ponytail slap on a cap good to go. When it was short I’d have wings or hat head.
vgaph@reddit
I’m 47 and retired from the Army about 9 months ago ago. I had the same haircut for a quarter century and now I want to enjoy having long hair. I haven’t cut it since August 2025.
Entering my dirt bag era.
Empty_Nestor@reddit
I’d love to do the same at 57 but my hair now has the texture of rabbit fur. If it gets any longer than pat the top of my ears, it gets so staticky that it sticks to the side of my head.
bluestaples@reddit
Things have gotten a bit wild with my hair since covid
GoodDoctorZ@reddit
My hair is currently level with my arm pits. Well, the back is, I can’t get any length up top anymore.
Friday_arvo@reddit
You only get about 4000 weeks in our life if we’re lucky enough to live to 80. Don’t let the judgement of your hair from others steal your peace. If you love it, rock it. Who knows how you’ll feel next year or in 5 years. But if you like it right now, wear it.
denvergardener@reddit
My mom was all-in on "boys should not have long hair" so I wasn't allowed to have long hair until I was 18.
She was pretty pissed when I grew my hair out in college. But OMG I got so much attention and girls really liked it.
Then I graduated and became a conformist as I entered the "real world" and cut my hair again.
Then someone told me "you look like a banker" thinking it was a compliment but I was horrified.
So the first time I got a job where having short hair wasn't a requirement, I grew my hair out again. Had long hair the last 15+ years and yeah I'm not cutting it for any reason. My mom still gave me shit about it, but she died last year so she doesn't have to worry about it anymore.
cjs81268@reddit
When I was a A little kid I had longer here. I would often let it grow as a young adult and it was so thick and wavy that it would just become an afro. About 20 years ago, I was working at a summer camp and I pushed through. Fast forward to almost 4 years ago and I decided to give it one last go. I'm in the entertainment biz. It completely changed the course of my career.

After short hair most of my life, last year I stopped getting it cut. I've had fairly short hair for most of my life. In 2015 I was in desperate need of a haircut before a wedding (wife's cousin) and I kept teasing her saying I was done shaving & cutting my hair. It was a joke and I got my hair cut.

I'm 55, look 45, feel most like myself with long hair. I had long hair from 18-30, then 38-45, and since 49. I'm thinking about getting the tiniest undercut to neaten things up a bit and ease daily care since I had a cancer surgery that compromised my shoulder mobility but I'm afraid that'll start something, lol.

My hair is longer than it ever has been. I had a beautiful mullet in the 80’s and early 90’s. Once I went short I didn’t grow it long again until my mid 40’s, I always wear a hat, I’ve been growing it for 7 years now, I’m pretty sure most men in their 50’s can’t do what I can with my hair mwahaha 😈

I have shoulder length hair now. It doesn't grow super long at this point. I grew it out because I used to (before it was the cool thing to do) shave my head. I did it because it was easier and cooler for working in kitchens. The whole time I had a shaved head, my friends made fun of me and I was the butt of every joke. Fast forward and all those guys who made fin of me started losing their hair so, therefore started shaving their heads. I grew mine out as a middlefinger of spite because I still have all my hair and its not even gray.

I had very short hair since I was 18 and am in my late 40’s now. I started growing it out during the pandemic and at first I feel like most people liked it. I think it started becoming a little more disliked the longer I grew it though. I’ve cut it down a little somewhat recently but I don’t think I’ll ever have it short again.

I grew mine out in my late-teens/early 20's, and then hacked it off when I enlisted.
Now I've been out since 2007 and after my divorce a few years back I decide to give it another whirl to see if I could even still grow it out without making myself insane in the mid-length stage.

Still do, but not for much longer. It's thinning and curls I never knew I had have shown themselves.
I kept it long since I was 13, cut it for a job that never materialized at 18. Since then, it's just been doing its own thing for the last 30 years.
I'm compensating now by growing a long beard.
Leather-Newt-3910@reddit
59 years old, I've had long hair through most of my life since I was 16. My hair is down to my chest now. At one point it was so long I could sit on it. Met my wife 28 years ago and one of the things she noticed about me with my hair.
I also have a beard that at one point was pretty long so I used to get called Gandolf, Jesus, ZZ Top and somebody even called me Leon Russell one day.
I've cut it short a few times but at this point in my life I don't give a shit if anybody likes it or not. I am planning in the next few weeks to get about six or 7 inches taken off the ends to clean it up a little bit but I will have long hair for as long as I have hair

I've never like short hair for myself. I grew it long in highschool and college. Then when I got out into the real world I chopped it because I thought I had to. Turns out, I never had to so I let it grow again. Been that way ever since. Now that I'm in my 50s, it's not as long as it used to be but I usually leep it shoulder length or a little less. It's all gray now but my wife won't let me color it. She likes it gray.

Yes. 51 years old here. Growing it for about a year and a half.. it's a bit below shoulder length now. Plan on growing it at least halfway down my back.. bangs are long too.. I pin them back with a headband. Otherwise I wear it down all the time. I go to my wife's salon every 3-4 months to clean it up and bit and remove split ends.. otherwise I leave it along. I do plan on getting it lowlighted this summer to get rid of the grays that are creeping in.

I had long hair in the early 1990’s. I let a girlfriend cut it off. She spent 2 hours cutting my hair into a perfect copy of Bill Clinton’s coifed hairstyle. The haircut and the girlfriend didn’t last.
Grew out my hair during the 2020 Covid mess. It was still thick and lush, and my favorite thing ever was my 10 year old granddaughter running her hands through it.
I’m retiring in a few years, I am letting it grow out again. Still have a full head of hair, so I’m going to flaunt it.

Had long hair in the 90s, as one did. It was usually in a ponytail or under a hat. Cut it off for work years ago.
During the pandemic, I let it grow and was shocked… SHOCKED… to learn that my hair is naturally quite curly. I always had it pulled back when I was younger, so it was never allowed to do its thing. But I let the pandemic hair go au natural, and really loved it. After a few years, I started to get tired of it and went really short. At least I know I can still grow those locks if I choose to :)

I had hair down to my ass in senior year. It got cut off later and ten years later I sough to grow it again. Turns out that the intermediate length is really tough to look good. I think the only time to survive that stage is junior high school.
I thought ladies would want to run their fingers through my luxuriant hair. Not so. Going bald was a much more interesting thing to touch apparently.

I always wanted long hair as a teen and my dad was a hard no on that. Then I started working and kept my hair short for most of my life. Apprehensive_Use1906@reddit
When I still had my hair at 45 I decided to grow it out. I’m 55 now still pretty long. I might cut it soon.
IranticBehaviour@reddit
Wasn't allowed long hair growing up, then spent almost 40 years in uniform, so I never had even longish hair. When I retired, I decided to try growing it out. Unfortunately, while I'm far from bald or even balding, I did lose an inch or so of hairline in my 20s. A receded hairline and long hair is a tough combo, and I was never really able to get it to look all that good. Plus my kids and their mum really disliked it, apparently I didn't 'look like me' (same reaction whenever I shave my beard, lol).
So I progressively cut it shorter over several months until I was right back to a military cut. There was a brief moment in that transition when it vaguely resembled Bon Jovi's haircut in the Bed of Roses era, but it didn't last. But I got tired of keeping it short again, so I'm growing it out a little. We'll see where it goes.

I’m curious about something though, not about long hair, but about huge, long beards. I noticed it in the past 10 years, but it just seems like it really exploded in the past 5 years, with formerly clean-shaven (or light bearded) guys appearing almost unrecognizable now with huge beards. Is it part of a ‘warrior/viking fashion’-type trend, or is it something deeper than that? It’s almost as if some are trying to ‘hide’ their faces.
Also, is it difficult to maintain? Is there a routine to it? I’m just fascinated with how many men decided to ‘grow out’ these days. 🙂

My dad was old-school country, and wouldn't let me grow my hair long when I lived at home. The second I got a real job and moved out on my own, I grew it out to a decent, below shoulder length. I had a very little hair from about 1999 through 2018. Couple times I let it grow out, but most of the time it was 1/8” or shaved completely bald. Then I decided to grow it out. Let it go untouched for about 6-8 months I think, then decided to shave it off again….but, I did the first pass on the side and then decided I hadn’t had a Mohawk in a while so I did that.
In late 2021 I decided to let the top grow while I shaved the sides and back. This is the longest I’ve had it since I was a skater in the early 90’s. This was the trip in May 2023 when I lopped it off and went back to a high and tight. I’m currently growing it out again.

I have a good head of hair for my age. Not quite as thick as when I was 18, but also the sad, balding in front, whispy little strand in back that you often see.

Shoulder length feathered hair in the 80.
Got my last real cut around 1989, I think. Went to college and had almost no expendable income. It cheaper letting grow out than getting haircuts. I get the split ends trimmed about every 6-12 months, usually, but thats it.
There were a few years in the middle where I kept it tied back but thats just for exercise or when I'm really hot, now.
Its rare I see people who knew me with shorter hair so it just is what it is. Also, most of my friends have long since had receding hairlines or growing bald spots. A few embraced it and went cleanshaven and look good. I kind of feel, as the exception with a full head of hair, it would be rude to throw it away.

I started growing my hair out after I left Catholic school and haven't cut it short since. My hair was always wavey and kinda unruly, so unless I go to a barber every 3 weeks, having it long is actually more manageable. If I'm being "professional", I'll tie it into a ponytail. My wife loves it, keeps trying to give me new product in order to keep the curls in it.
One time, I was walking in for a job interview and the manager who met me at the door to walk me back made a comment that I'll need to cut my hair for the job. I stopped there and said "I won't waste any more of your time." turned on my heel and left. It was for a job stocking shelves in a grocery store. I'm a graphic designer by trade & education, so I get some leeway about my hair (and the earring, also had it since graduation).
It's gotten thinner. Have the widow's peak from hell if I pull it back, but parting it in the middle keeps me from having a billboard for a forehead. The top is starting to get thin, didn't notice until my wife took a photo of it. My hair is dirty blonde, so the grey looks like the light is just highlighting it. I’ve always kept mine longish- Robert Smith long rather than all the way past my shoulders. It’s thinning out now and left to my own devices I’d probably go short but my partner tells me she fell in love with a pirate and I should remain a pirate if I know what’s good for me.
R-Voodoo@reddit
Nuclear security career straight out of college for 22 years, had to be clean shaved and short haired my whole life for gas mask purposes. The day I left that line of work, I stopped cutting both. Beard down mid torso with hair to match. Turns out I have lovely curls 🤣 The Beard is white and kids call me Santa, I can live with that. The hair is thinning up top, so it might be short lived. I tell people at work you can tell how long I've been out of security by counting the rings.

I wish I had the follicles to participate in long hair.
indicus23@reddit
First grew it long during sr year high school in 95. Have occasionally had to cut it for jobs over the year, but always regrow it whenever allowed. Haven't had to cut it, or shave my beard in like 12 years. Don't plan to ever again if I can help it.
tastyreg@reddit
Started growing it when I was around 13 or so, had a haircut once when i was 24 and that was it, didn't feel right, haven't touched it since.
Better_Resort1171@reddit
I'm planning on growing mine out upon retirement. I've had buzz cuts forever.
My hairline has not changed since I was in my 20s, just went grey-white in my 50s... Hence keeping the buzz cut.
tranquilrage73@reddit
My husband is 58 and still has a full head of long hair.
caryn1477@reddit
Sounds like my husband.
DangerBird-@reddit
Fuck your husband. 🤣
caryn1477@reddit
My husband does. He's 53 and his hair is pin straight. He says he wouldn't know what to do with it if he cut it short. He has no patience for styling and using products and it probably wouldn't look good anyway.
No-Economics-8239@reddit
I grew my hair long in my teens and kept it that way until my late 20s. Including a mullet for a hot minute.
I eventually cut it short partially because of my career and partly for convenience. That first time taking a shower after it was short again was eye opening at how much time I was spending on keeping it clean. I'm too lazy and disinterested to grow it out again.
Weary_Commission_346@reddit
My husband started out with long hair, but has little of it now.
When i met him (in his 30s), he had a long greying pony tail, but starting to thin on top. After a few years, i started trimming the ends to keep it from looking raggedy. Fast forward another couple decades and he started trimming it shorter to just above his shoulders. The big factor was that he was nearly bald on top, so he cut the whole thing short. He didn’t want draggled back hair with a bald head!
He still had his beard, but when COVID hit, he cut it off for better mask fit while he was teaching.
So he went from beard and ponytail to bald and bare faced. I kinda miss the beard, but at least he has white curls in back, just not long ones.
DangerBird-@reddit
I just procrastinate getting haircuts. Once or twice a year when it gets annoying.
hapster85@reddit
Had it long in my late 20s and early 30s. I don't have enough left to grow out now. Lol
hernondo@reddit
At some point long hair on men just starts looking bad. Thinning is the obvious answer, but it looks like you’re trying to hold onto the 70’s for too long. You’ll LOOK better with shorter and cleaner haircuts, and probably even look younger.

I was teased relentlessly over my overly-curley hair in the 80's. I always had it cut close, and even more so after serving in the military. My wife asked me to grow it out just once to see how it looks, so for the last three years I have been doing just that. Decades of going to the barber and asking for close, but don't make me look like a cop, close... Now that I have grown it out, I wish I would have done so a while ago. My hair is thick, going almost white, shoulder length, with dime sized ringlets. My wife is jealous, and I have had women tell me my hair is wasted on a man. Men give me looks, not sure which way, but assume jealousy as well.
For something I was teased about as a kid, this is a cool kinda revenge that makes me smile.

I just started growing my hair out. I’ve always had a buzz cut, or a flat top for many many years.. in high school it may have been a little longer but never too long. Now tho.. I haven’t shaved my head in 2 years or so and it’s to the point in between my shoulders. I’m lucky I still have hair and it’s not real gray! The wife loves it! I’m a little annoyed with it cause it gets in my face so she bought hairties.. I’ve never owned hair ties in my life!
j-6@reddit
I’ve had long hair most of my life. About 80% gray at 49. I did a chop about 3 years ago and my “look” works better in a ponytail worn up like a 90’s cheerleader. I tried the short hair and beard thing and didn’t like it. Clean shaven and long hair works for me.
Not liking equals envy in my book. There’s a shitload of balding guys that aren’t cool with it I work with. My 75 year old mother hates my hair choice, too. Then again, I just found out she wears a wig six months ago.
Grow that shit, my brother.

I have very long hair. Its over halfway down my back. It's actually longer than all the women in my family, 2 daughters. 2 sisters and an ex.
I had long hair when I was younger. Then kwpt.it short for a good 20nsomething years. After I got divorced I let it grow back again.

Had long hair all through my 20s and then cut it off when I was 30. If I could change it I would have grown it for a year or two and then realised how terrible it looked and cut it off having learned my lesson. It was so bad.
I did intend to cut it off in my mid-20s and a girl said, in passing, no it's part of your identity. My second lesson learned would be don't make life decisions based on passing comments from pretty girls.

Just hit mid-fifties and it’s back down to my jeans belt. I’m a redhead so I have thick strong hair, also kept a lot of natural colour. Always been a rocker and a heavy metal kid so it’s an important part of who I am. Occasionally I’ve got sick of it and had it all lopped off but I always grow it back. \m/ once a rocker always a rocker.

Grew mine long in my 30's, more or less down to my waist. Then it became a hassle so I kept it short for a while. Decided to grow it long again later on, but by then I had the David Crosby look with losing hair on the top so now I just keep it short.

Joined the military at 18 and kept a military cut until last year at age 54. Got some maintenance trims but I’m currently what I would think is medium length hair. Still, it’s the longest I’ve ever had it and I’m still trying to figure out what to do with it. Sometimes I think about cutting it, but I don’t. I didn’t know I had wavy hair. It’s still thick so I’ll continue growing it and see what happens.
Dreaming_of_Rlyeh@reddit
I do in cycles. I’ll give myself a buzz cut, then grow it all out over about 6 months, and then shave it all off again when I get sick of it, so the cycle continues haha

52 & still have nearly ass length hair with very little gray. Started growing it out in my late twenties because the men on my mom's side of the family all went bald in their mid-thirties. Thought I should grow it out while I had the chance. Somehow I lucked out. Now I don't know what the hell I would do with it if I cut it short. Long is easy, but honestly, I'm just happy I have hair at all.

As a bald guy who used to have long hair, I remember wondering if people had a problem with it (before I started going bald). I also remember the crisis all r/bald guys go through before getting rid of it; you need validation.
Never forget that validation can come from others or yourself, no matter what you decide.
DjQuamme@reddit
I was clean shaven, high and tight haircut my entire adult life. During COVID I quit doing anything with either. And I haven't started back up yet. My beard is awful. Thin, straggley, it gets maybe 6-8 inches long before it just breaks off. Hair is halfway down my back, but hasn't gotten any longer in the last few years so I guess that's it's natural breaking point. Most of my friends and family call me the homeless looking guy now. It seems to be a good deterrence to strangers just randomly wanting to talk to me as I get left alone more often than not. I personally hate it. Pain in the ass having to take care of it. Always getting caught in jacket zippers, annoying when it's hot out, annoying when sleeping, just always in the way. But my wife likes it so I haven't cut it. When I retire next year, I want to find a stylist who can do something with it and hope to find a compromise between looking homeless and looking like an asshole cop.

The longest my hair ever got was shoulder-length, like Brandon Lee from The Crow. Every couple of months, I just buzz it off because I do not want to deal with it.

My husband gets it cut when it starts bugging him or he feels like he needs to be more polished. He got it cut 2+ years ago for my oldest's wedding and hasn't cut it again since.
Same reason he grew out a beard. Less maintenance. He takes good care of his beard and I prefer it to scratchy stubble
He's vacillated between long hair and short hair the whole 35 years I've known him..

About 10 years ago I saw a 40ish punk at the gas station with a Mohawk that was interrupted halfway back by a bald spot. I sometimes think about him and wonder if and when he ever gave it up.
According to Facebook, all of the guys I knew who had long hair back in the day have cut it short.

Mullet when I was a teen. Almost 60 now and I still have all my hair and it's still mostly not gray. I wear it longer than most men my age. Were it not for my job, I could easily grow it out like Kurt Russell's magnificent plumage.

Nice. I've got Kurt Russell hair too at 54.

I've thought about it a few times and given it an attempt more than once. I can't stand the tickle on my ears and end up cutting it off before it gets long enough to be past the ears.

54M here and I've been going back and forth from long to short to long now, since highschool. I'm a musician. But my wife likes the short so I'm about to get a faux hawk for the first time. Kinda excited about it. I like the long cuz I got good hair. But it gets annoying in my eyes and really don't want to put it in a ponytail or manbun all the time to get it out of my face. So short cut here we come again!

My husband has had long hair the majority of his life. He cut it only once since 1988 that I remember and that was to carry his grandmother’s casket. His is almost waist length now. Very few grays. His beard however is almost all gray. I still love his hair.

I had long hair when I was young. When I was about 30, someone took a picture of me; when I saw it, I knew it was over.
There is a time for most men, and not at all the same time, when it’s time to get it cut. I knew a 60 yo guy who pulled it off, but I have known many more 35 yo men who didn’t.

I grew mine out during COVID and jsut kept it. It probably suited my personality and temperament more. Since I'm a college professor and live in Colorado, it feels in keeping with my job - almost comically so - so I have kept it for now.
