Rumours or stories about your school teachers that were true?

That Mr Stewart was gay! He was. He hid it (badly) for YEARS and came out when he retired. Have seen him and his partner around town since and he’s doing really well. I wish we could go back in time and he could have lived his truth at school instead of taking us to Starlight Express every year for our house trip. Still, a lovely man.

Wide toe box women’s shoes that are not “barefoot” style?

Men’s shoes are def better as their width is bigger for basic shoes. I’ve found men’s Keen shoes are good for walking/hiking, and New Balance is good for sports/running. The styles are obviously more masculine but not all - there are definitely some more unisex.

Ours had air raid shelters in the grounds - sort of humps with manholes where you’d get in which we were not supposed to play on. We all played on them, obviously, but I wish we’d been allowed to see inside.

What’s the nosiest question you’ve ever been asked?

Posted by savethebees90@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 777 comments

feralwest@reddit

“When will you have kids?” We’d had years of infertility and five IVF cycles by that point. I’d also had several surgeries for endometriosis. It was interesting cos I got to a point where I just started telling people and then they’d be horrified they’d asked and apologise a lot. But hey, maybe they thought twice before asking someone else.

How accepting is your 'circle' of those who go against 'the norm'?

Posted by AnEnglishAmongScots@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 415 comments

feralwest@reddit

Almost every single person in my friend circle is queer, living unconventionally (like van life), weird in some way, neurodiverse, dress like pixies on too much sherbet. I think we basically run in packs. My family is definitely a LOT more normal. They are mostly accepting of my/friends weirdness, although they probably wish I was a bit more normal so they could relate to me more.

Burglared tonight with newborn. How do you move on?

Posted by GOKU2442@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 88 comments

feralwest@reddit

I’m so, so sorry for what you went through. I came home and disturbed a burglar many years ago, but the emotional effect was SO much stronger than I was expecting. With all the protective and nurturing newborn hormones in your body I can’t imagine how rough you must be feeling. Victim Support reached out to me the day after and said “unfortunately, it just takes time but you WILL process what’s happened - be extremely kind to yourself and take every day very gently.” This turned out to be correct and what I needed to hear at the time. I also found some of the feelings quite strange in that I wasn’t so much angry he’d broken in - it was more that I didn’t give him permission to be in my space? Idk if that resonates. Anyway, it DID get better. Every day was a bit easier. Wishing you the best of luck.

Do all women get an epidural when giving birth in UK?

Posted by Watermelonsmoothies@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 88 comments

feralwest@reddit

You can have one if you would like, but they’re absolutely not something every woman gets. Many women labour with gas and air, in a birthing pool, with no addition pain relief, with pethidine, etc. It hugely depends on the woman’s own preferences, her experience of labour pain, and how quickly her labour is progressing.

When will greyhound racing be banned?

Posted by xamitchell@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 141 comments

feralwest@reddit

I had a retired greyhound, now sadly passed away at 12.5. She was a completely brilliant dog. If you’re ever considering getting a pet, I would very much recommend a grey. But
yeah. It’s horrible and brutal and the industry is horrific. Greys are bred by the field load to try and find a couple that are fastest. About 350 either died on the tracks or were euthanised off track in 2024. 3800 dogs were injured while racing. There are mass graves with thousands in. Many are euthanised by bolt gun. One positive: Wales is bringing in a racing ban. Diolch yn Fawr, Cymru!

Women, how do you get your GP to take you seriously?

Posted by No-Structure-8125@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 550 comments

feralwest@reddit

I think you need to see a different GP asap. I don’t want to scare you but night sweats can also be a sign of blood cancer. You need to have that ruled out, as well as testing for perimenopause. And if you do want to have kids/a family in the future (if you haven’t already) I would push this forward. Your fertility could be in danger. Keep pushing, see a different GP at your practice, or even change practices. Good luck!

How can I stop my siblings from being home schooled?

Posted by Stop_Lollygagging@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 237 comments

feralwest@reddit

Totally get where you’re coming from but
school was a place of fear and bullying for me for my whole time there. I changed schools
it didn’t help. It felt like my teachers were completely impotent against the bullies, and I was far from the only (or worst) targeted kid. I agree that home learning isn’t a substitute but I spent 12 years of my life abjectly afraid every single school day
surely there’s something broken in mainstream education too?

Do any of you eat a healthy, savoury breakfast?

I prefer sweet things first thing in the morning too, but if I have time it’s nice to do a big bowl of fruit and yoghurt and then have something savoury like scrambled eggs. But most of the time I’m shoving cereal in my face as I try to remember where I left my car keys.

Did anything significant happen in your life that made you stop smoking?

Posted by imokaytho@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 182 comments

feralwest@reddit

Smoking narrows blood vessels, so wounds take longer to heal and are more prone to infection taking hold, as white blood cells can’t get to them as efficiently. If you’re making an intentional wound eg surgery, you need to be as sure as you can that the patient can heal, otherwise you’re causing more harm.

Does everybody in the UK live in debt nowadays?

Posted by VastYogurtcloset8009@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 210 comments

feralwest@reddit

Our only debt is student loans and mortgage. Drive a 10yr old Fiesta. No credit cards. Recently finished paying off my overdraft. Trying REALLY hard to live within our means, although not always succeeding. What we don’t have, unfortunately, is a savings pot. That’s definitely going to be the next goal.

Partner had a storage unit when he moved and it took us MONTHS to get around to working through it and emptying it. Became a bit of an albatross around his neck tbh. I would stick to decluttering at home.

Do you identify more as British, or as English, Scottish, and Welsh?

British and English. More often the former as half of my family is Northern Irish. We moved a lot when I was a kid so I don’t feel like I’m “from” anywhere in particular, except for a general Britishness.

Would you be bothered?

Posted by Disastrous-Drop6338@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 102 comments

feralwest@reddit

You sound like an absolutely fab kid - I think the key is going to be approach. Some people might be a bit worried/uncertain if you knock on their door and offer to do some work, just because people can be quite tentative these days. Not sure if you live in a big city, a town or more rurally, but that might make a difference. I would potentially start with a little intro campaign - maybe make a flyer with your name (just first name) and a little bit about you not speaking. You could put on it that you’re looking for pocket money jobs and perhaps list some options. Then you could say you’ll pop round at a date and time and see if they need anything doing? That then gives people a bit of a heads up and if they’re not in no bother. Really wish you every success! Do you have an adult mentor at all re: career options?

What is your thoughts on assisted suicide?

Posted by InsurancePurple4630@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 709 comments

feralwest@reddit

I’m a doctor. People with terminal diagnoses should be allowed to make their own decision about their death. Not all cancer-related pain can be controlled. Sometimes deciding for yourself when and how you die is the last bit of control you can wrestle back from the disease. Obviously this isn’t just about cancer, but as 1 in 2 of us will get it, it’s a useful example. If you don’t want to have an assisted passing, you just don’t have to have one, similar to abortion. We must not let religion dictate our secular health policy.

People who are going through hell right now, what is it, that is keeping you going?

Posted by HallowedAndHarrowed@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 344 comments

feralwest@reddit

In IVF hell at the moment. This is our last go. I go back and forth between wanting to try 1000 more times and never wanting to step foot in a clinic again. Even the smell of the private hospital makes me feel incredibly anxious. Nothing has worked for us so far, so there’s very little chance of it working now. I am trying to stay in that mindset and not
hope. But sometimes I forget and imagine a little one with my partner’s nose or my hair and I die a bit inside.
