How do you stop yourself becoming extremely lazy when you finish work?

Tbh I find I’m useless after work too, so I’m considering going to bed super early and then getting up early so I can exercise/meal prep/etc. I dunno if it’ll work tho. It’d mean I’d need to be asleep by 10pm…

What news story stuck with you? Be it good or bad

This. She was just trying to get home from work. Probably headphones in, listening to music or a podcast, thinking about what to cook for dinner, what’s on the telly… and then that absolute bastard just took her. The mundanity of it was horrific.

It's Sunday night so obviously I'm thinking of chucking in my job and setting up a coffee roasting business. What random thing do you think about disappearing into to avoid the real world?

I used to do a lot of that before changing careers (which I recognise as someone who was single and didn’t have kids and had savings I was really privileged to be able to do). Now, I quite fancy growing things. I’m quite good at houseplants, so I’d quite like to have chickens and a small arable plot. And a herd of rescue greyhounds.

I tried to read his latest novel but I just couldn’t. It definitely had some great lines but the story felt very overwritten and convoluted. But maybe it just wasn’t my thing.

I know. And SOMEONE killed that woman. They’re probably long dead themselves. I doubt it will be solved now but… I suppose you never know

Easy to fix: The fly tipping. There’s just SO much rubbish dumped ALL OVER THE PLACE. The council are a bit shit. Hard to fix: The M32 motorway flyover. I wish we could put the junction underground like they did in Boston and then we could just have lovely unimpeded walks and maybe a new park! Easton, Bristol

Moved into a new house, started great new job… and I just came down with flu. Proper Victorian deathbed feels. I have been in bed for a week. I need to somehow crawl to the GP on Monday if I’m still this bad to get a sick note for more time off. There are still boxes EVERYWHERE in the house. My new colleagues probably hate me. I want to cry. Solidarity, random internet person!

When is the best time to go to A&E?

Posted by MrMrsPotts@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 64 comments

feralwest@reddit

Go in for around 9am (shift change is usually 7:30-8am so you get fresh staff) - it might still be busy but the GP referrals won’t have started yet. Bring a pillow, a phone charger, snacks/water/flask of tea and enjoy!

I enjoy cross stitching. Started off doing patterns but now I design my own and even make fonts. I make special tapestries for new babies or wedding anniversaries of family.

You're on the motorway, and suddenly hit with intense sleepiness, the next service station/exit is 30 minutes away, what do you do?

Posted by Spreehox@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 747 comments

feralwest@reddit

I think about this quite a lot as I'm a doctor who does night shifts and drives home via a motorway. I've found the best things are: chew gum/eat chewy sweets, air con on/all windows open, singing along to music or call my partner and have him yell things down the phone at me. I do hope I never end up in a ditch.

How much sleep do you get?

Posted by ttmef@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 305 comments

feralwest@reddit

I definitely need at least 8. Ideally 9. I end up using sleeping tablets probably more than I should. But I do night shifts once a month for work and it’s much easier to normalise my sleep routine after with a bit of help.

What is the strongest indicator of social class in the UK? It is pronunciation, choice of words, what your parents did for work... what is it?

Ok, so why the bread buttering thing? If you don’t butter the whole slice someone else at the table will take all the butter before you’re finished!

We got a bigger telly as my partner likes gaming and the more immersive experience. I think it looks great, but his mum was HORRIFIED. 😂

Were your experiences of PE in school positive or negative?

It’s so frustrating isn’t it? Almost every major accident/broken bone I’ve had has been because of it. You can still get diagnosed now! Although tbh if you know, you know.

Almost entirely terrible and terrifying. I have dyspraxia so my hand eye coordination and ability to remember sequences is... non existent. Which meant most sports we did were nightmarish. I did enjoy swimming, but we didn't do much of it. Our teachers were also the 'if you touch your hair/adjust your knickers/breathe oddly again I'll make you do it in your underwear' types. Honestly, all my positive experiences of exercise as a kid, like hill walking with my dad or swimming with my friends, were outside of school. I've spent years building up an understanding now of what I am capable of and like - I've done three 10k runs in the last few years, walked the South Downs Way with friends and am hoping to get more into yoga to improve my flexibility. I still get The Fear over team sports because of school so avoid them, but perhaps one day I'll join a team.

Will we reach a point one day where road infrastructure becomes a sensory overload?

Posted by BringBack5pFreddos@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 80 comments

feralwest@reddit

I feel like one thing we should definitely reduce (at least, if not ban) is roadside advertising. Billboards (sometimes moving/flashing/lit) by motorways are absolutely a distraction and a big hazard, as are ads on the side of city streets which crowd the space and draw the eye away from the roadway. Just really dangerous and serving zero purpose other than to make someone money.

Yeah, Fishersgate is just a bit too... quiet. Used to jog around there a lot and it was definitely a good way to keep my motivated to get home!

We bought our flat from a landlord. He genuinely could not have given less of a shit. As well as many active leaks we discovered during the winter, my favourite bodge was a wine cork that had been carved a bit to fit and shoved in a pipe under the sink.

Do you have an automatic or manual car?

Posted by Numerous_Ticket_7628@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 119 comments

feralwest@reddit

Drove a manual for decades, then switched over to an auto after living in Oz for a few years and getting used to them. Now there's no way I'd go back unless I was getting a 4WD for farm work or something - automatics make city and town driving a much better experience.
