When is the best time to go to A&E?

Posted by MrMrsPotts@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 64 comments

I am wondering when it is both least busy typically and also best staffed with doctors ?

A&E was always busy, but three weeks ago ,I waited 7 hours , and my son was sick .The nurse asked me to wait 21 hours to see the doctor ,I couldn't wait because my son had severe pain ,I went to boots and bought pain relief medication, and next day I took him to GP our doctor is kind and brilliant (Dr Collgen in falls road) he gave my son medication and sent him to scan . I will never go back to Royal Hospital A&E .21 hours is the waiting time .

Shame the top comments are ultimately unhelpful. Many people need to go to A&E, in fact told to go by a medic. Reducing stress and exhaustion of very long time spent in a chair when you may have the option to spend more time in comfortable surroundings is part of the experience of having an urgent medical. And going when it’s quiet reduces strain on system and staff.

Former A & E nurse (left in 2021) Worst day is Monday, AM & PM. Friday and Saturday and Sunday nights were slower but that wasn’t due to debauchery it was because urgent care centres had weekend closures. Sunday day and night were always my quietest shift. Monday is notoriously bad as people haven’t seen their GP all weekend and then they or a healthcare professional realise they are really unwell.

Ah… the Monday morning “I twisted my ankle playing Sunday football, now I haven’t moved it while sleeping so the pain is worse so I think it’s broken” crowd. Takes me back… Also the blue light 7am heart failure patients who slipped down the bed from their eight pillows and the frusemide cupboard nearly running empty.

I'm kind of that first paragraph right now, but it's been just over a month and the pain has gotten worse, but only if my foot is knocked slightly. Walking is fine. Been told by the GP receptionist that I should go to A&E since the GP doesn't have an x-ray. Wtf do I do?

Brian-Kellett@reddit

Soft tissue injuries can take 6 weeks to heal, and injured ligaments even longer. If the GP is sending you for an x-ray then go, GP can do the x-ray form and it rules out a misaligned fracture.

Yeah, I'll get a form/appointment from the GP. Didn't feel right just walking into A&E when it isn't urgent. Thanks mate.

That second paragraph had me in stitches. So accurate.

If you are thinking of the best time do you really need to go in the first place.

Have you tried booking a GP appointment lately? You have to fill in a form and AI decides whether you can have an appointment. In my case it told me to go to A&E. l know that it is not an emergency as it is a long standing issue which I would like to be investigated further. Consequently I have no option other than go to A&E and would prefer to go when they are less busy.

What if the treatment you need can only be done through A&E because we have a broken healthcare system?
View on Reddit #42866488

MrPloppyHead@reddit

Exactly, the best time to go is in and emergency, if you have the luxury of contemplating when the best time is I don’t think you need to go.

If you think you have broken your finger, you can wait a little but you do need an x ray. Minor injuries is in the same place in my local hospital.

LondonCycling@reddit

A suspected broken finger is not normally an A&E matter. Call 111 and they will advise if they think you should go to A&E. https://www.nhs.uk/conditions/broken-finger/

Yeah, I never really got a choice of when to go to A+E, the time presented itself.

Efficient-Gur-3086@reddit

When your situation is an emergency situation that is the best time to go A&E. A&E is always busy 24/7.

I think the answer is Tuesday at 9am.

If you have a choice then the walk in clinic is probably a better option! Almost always busy but they get through people quickly and I've always got fantastic care there. Unless it's life threatening it's definitely preferable

If you have the luxury of waiting until it's quieter, you should probably reflect on whether A&E is the most appropriate place to seek treatment
View on Reddit #35587911

bsnimunf@reddit

Problem is you are often referred to A and E by  111. Sometimes your Dr but then it's probably necessary.
View on Reddit #35588240

PetersMapProject@reddit

In that case, a medic has told you to go, so go.  But there's far too many people who visit A&E inappropriately
View on Reddit #35589006

bsnimunf@reddit

There's a good chunk who get sent there by 111 who shouldn't be there. Probably 30 percent of the waiting room.

I keep seeing comments around if your asking do you really need to go etc, and whilst it is true in many circumstances it's not always the case.  After being in hospital 5 times last year, 4 of those times had to be admitted via a&e. I knew what was coming, that I would most likely be admitted to a ward and whilst my life wasn't imminently in danger for most of those, the only way into the ward was to be triaged by a&e.  Luckily most of the time my waits were quite short as in an hour or two but this was mostly in the middle of the night or early morning.  I think some of it comes down to the type of area you live, for some the nights may be a lot busier with drunks etc. I had a room overlooking a&e so saw the ambulances come day and night, day time was busier but there was still a steady stream over night.  Turns out the one time my life was in danger I was waiting for some time, without any pain relief despite me asking multiple times, when the consultant saw me in the morning and realised how bad things were things got moving quickly, and was in the operating theatre within hours.
View on Reddit #35594292

Low-Yak-1705@reddit

Not sure if it's still the case,  but I've been told by a doctor relative that weekends were the worst time to go in with something requiring specialist treatment, since the senior consultants don't work weekends and you'll be looked after by more junior staff who are already overstretched.

I went a few months ago at around 8am on a Saturday morning. I was fully checked and discharged in 2 hours. I was impressed!

Second this, went in for an 8am Xray on a Saturday and got seen early it was so quiet! Mine was a routine appt but I was struck by how quiet A&E and things like the xray dept were

6 am is even better. 😀 I woke up with a badly swollen finger, I had cut it the day before but thought it would be fine. It wasn’t and had some broken off glass in it. Most unimpressed at having to get up so early on a Saturday and have to got the hospital of all places turned into - wow it’s so quiet - seen almost immediately and treated brilliantly. If only one could deliberately time these things. 😅

At 6am you're probably still dealing with the night staff. 8-9am and you should get the day team.

It's a reasonable question despite what others say. For example, something that needs an x-ray but isn't life threatening - it still needs to be done in A&E. The answer is after 8am on a weekday, that's when there is the most staff.

People should have more respect for NHS services, use the correct one. If you can plan when to visit A&E then you don’t need it. Go to minor injury or call 111 for advice. When they are gone it will be so much worse.

Go in for around 9am (shift change is usually 7:30-8am so you get fresh staff) - it might still be busy but the GP referrals won’t have started yet. Bring a pillow, a phone charger, snacks/water/flask of tea and enjoy!
View on Reddit #35587623

jake_burger@reddit

Or better yet, if you have to time to prepare all that stuff, don’t go at all because you don’t need to. If it’s an emergency then go straight away. If you are planning to go to A&E and thinking about the best time and preparing a kit then you are well enough to go to a walk-in minor injury unit or make an appointment with a GP or phone 111

At my local one A&E and minor injuries are combined for those commenting to go to one - it may be combined there too. (This confused me the first time I had to go and I wandered around avoiding A&E looking for it.) When I went in quite late for the minor injury side a year ago (around 10pm) returning from my partner's I was told that the minor injury people were in 8am to 8pm so I might be seen quicker in the daytime. As it goes, I was out within around an hour despite the display board saying typical wait over 4 hours. Went in in the day time this week for another minor injury and again it said 4 hours, I was out just over an hour later but that included an X-Ray too this time.

100% this. If your life is potentially in danger you'll go straight through. Ideally you should be arriving in an ambulance, but if you have made your own way there without assistance, be prepared for a long wait.

View on Reddit #35588453

notthetalkinghorse@reddit

If you're debating the best time to go you need to ask if you actually really need to go at all. Maybe a walk-in or minor injuries centre would do what you need without placing extra pressure on A&E waiting times. If you actually do need to go to A&E you should go straight away. You'll be assessed on arrival and placed into a queue based on the urgency of care required. A patient with a broken finger is going to take longer to get seen than a patient showing up having had a cardiac event.
View on Reddit #35588033

Dimac99@reddit

If you don't need to go more or less immediately/urgently, then you should probably be going to a minor injuries unit or something similar. Your local health board website ought to be able to help locate your nearest non-emergency unit, or maybe try calling your GP surgery as the receptionists will definitely know where to direct you.
