What’s a UK crime that remains unsolved to this day?

I’ve been reading about unsolved crimes lately, and it got me thinking, what are some crimes in the UK that are still unsolved?

The murder of Dr David Kelly
View on Reddit #43814999

hitch21@reddit

The thing I still cannot get my head around is the statements from his dentist who said they searched for his records the day he died and couldn’t find them anywhere on site. The following day they were back exactly where they should have been in the A-Z listing of records. Did multiple members of staff just make a stupid mistake and not see them? It’s plausible but seems unlikely especially with them turning up exactly where they had searched. Don’t see any reason for a dentist to make it up it barely got any attention or money from it. That’s the one bit I cannot find a reasonable answer to. There’s plenty of other oddities in the case but that’s the clearest red flag for me of serious experts being involved in killing him.

I'll never be able to understand why nobody questioned the fact that he had booked a holiday only a couple of hours before his "suicide"

WillB_2575@reddit

Who would question it? The BBC i.e. British state media?
View on Reddit #46840082

hitch21@reddit

See I can get away with stuff like that because suicidal people can act in ways that don’t make sense. Not every suicide is some grandiose pre planned thing with a note. Some suicides are sudden and unexpected with the person seeming entirely normal beforehand. Don’t get me wrong I agree booking a holiday adds more credence to the idea he wasn’t planning anything. But alone wouldn’t persuade me it wasn’t suicide. But combined with the strange choice of killing himself with a dull pen knife, the lack of blood on scene and the dentist statements plus a lot more make me suspect there was third party involvement.

A lot of the confusion comes about because people are conditioned through the media to think that things like this could only happen in other countries. Take Russia, for instance. No one is surprised when the FSB bumps off one of Putin’s political rivals. Yet many in the UK still believe the official line on what happened to Kelly, the man in the suitcase and others.

A local one to me is the murder of  Janet Murgatroyd, a 20-year old student at UCLan in Preston in 1996. She was last seen alive in the early hours of 16 June 1996, and was found dead in the River Ribble, from a combination of head injuries and drowning. They convicted a guy for it, but the conviction was quashed on appeal a few years later

Moira Anderson. 11 year old girl who just disappeared one day in the 50s. Last seen getting on a bus and it turned out the bus driver was out on bail for rape (which he was later convicted for). Nothing was ever really done about it by the police at the time. The bus drivers own daughter was convinced he done it and went on to create the [Moira Anderson Foundation](https://www.moiraanderson.org/) which support people who have experienced childhood sexual abuse. There's never been any conclusive evidence and sadly her body has never been found.

Another disappearance almost identical to Jeannette Tate's is April Fabb's in Norfolk in 1969. Like Tate, her bicycle was found in the road, just likely minutes after she was abducted. She was tragically never found either. However, despite the similarities there is no evidence that Robert Black was involved. He may not even have been driving a van at that point. Interestingly a lesser known case that happened about 30 miles from April Fabb's disappearance is Stephen Newing's. He vanished the same year. I've never seen them publicly connected.

That's interesting.  I always think of Archer when I see comments about Dando because in his prison diary (the only prison diary I could find at the time a mate had been sent down, well written and a good read when he's not whining about how he's amazing and was hard done by) he mentions that the wrongly accused Barry George was in Belmarsh at the time. He mentions that even prison guards considered him an odd man, but totally incapable of the murder and surely innocent. I'm fairly sure Archer mentions he was "friends" with Dando and agrees the strange loner in the prison yard could not have done it. It would be odd for Archer to dismiss a potential assailant at the time George was still convicted for the murder, if he was involved himself.
View on Reddit #43827528

Friend_Klutzy@reddit

I saw a documentary recently which included George's police interviews. It was very hard to reconcile the quiet, polite, awkward Barry George with the ruthless efficient killer who left no forensic evidence at the crime scene. The trouble is it's also hard to reconcile that quiet, polite, awkward Barry George with the Barry George who sexually assaulted women, posed with weapons in camo gear, passed himself off as SAS, and stalked numerous women around the area of the murder. I can see why people think the former Barry George couldn't possibly have done it, and why the police thought the latter had.

A crazed fan could well have gun/ military experience and training. Think the guy who killed Sarah Everett was a cop or Britain's biggest serial killer was a doctor Harold Shipman. She was shot at an address that she spent barely any time at, and there was no way a professional hitman could've known she'd be there at the time. Investigative journalism is its own specialism. She worked at a local paper for 5 years (which doesn't involve any of that) then went into newsreading. Crimewatch didn't involve her doing any research, just presenting information about the things the police were investigating. She was a very talented woman but her doing this on the side is incredibly unlikely, especially with no one else knowing. Even the "Kosovo war" theory is just based on her being the face of a charity aid campaign not any journalistic work

I don't think it was much of a theory at the time. Crimewatch wasn't a show that "blows the lid" om anything. The police, BBC, her partner have all refuted any claims that she was investigating anything. I am sure the police would have found proof like personal paperwork

If she was reporting a normal non crime based show like, say, a holiday show, people would have thought the obsessed unhinged fan theory more. But because she was linked to a crime show people thought her death had to do with a crime and she was silenced. >The police, BBC, her partner have all refuted any claims that she was investigating anything. The theories at the time were scorned ex lover, obsessive fan, a criminal convicted because of crimewatch (I.e a viewer did have something they told the police), the Kosovo stuff because of her promoting the charity aid initiative, mistaken identity. A crimewatch link might have been feasible but not the fact she was investigating. Those claims only came from relatively recent Internet speculation following Saville.
View on Reddit #43854745

AvoidFinasteride@reddit

>The theories at the time were scorned ex lover, obsessive fan, a criminal convicted because of crimewatch ( The theories too were also that she was about to uncover something big i recall. Obviously, the Saville theory got linked to this much later, but regardless, it was still heavily said in 99 she was on to something and had to be silenced. It was similar to the high profile killing of journalist Veronica guerin, about 2 years or so earlier, who was sllenved over her exposure to the drug trade, so people thought the cases were similar. But as it was said, upthread Dando wasn't an investigative journalist like guerin, so it's unlikely this was true. But like all theories they usually are flimsy and are divorced from reality and facts but people will still believe them.

If a random copper knew about it then it wasn't hidden or secret, certainly not enough to murder a high profile presenter. He's just repeating something he heard
View on Reddit #43849322

AvoidFinasteride@reddit

Nah I believe you, he likely heard it in the force but still you must remember that even the cops knew fuck all and the case was cold from day 1. So he'd have heard plausible theories like everyone else from colleagues but hearing it from a cop or your next door neighbour makes 0 difference because neither know for sure. If there was a cover up ( unlikely) in the police the cops themselves wouldn't know and it would be those in high authority that would be the only ones and they certainly wouldn't be gossiping about it. So yea, he might have heard talk, but more than likely it was mere speculation with 0 evidence or weight to it. It's like madeline mc cann, the head cop said he knew she died in the apartment but really he was talking out his ass and more likely trying to cover his own frustration that his team made 0 progress in the case and in their incompetence made loads of grave errors. Truth be told, cases like Dando and mc cann are dead ends. You'll have cops and 'professionals' make speculations and plausible theories, but really, they know shit as they are cases wigjoir a shred of evidence left behind.

View on Reddit #43825457

AvoidFinasteride@reddit

The mccann case was a pantomime truth be told. Frankly, it's not entirely the fault of the cops as I believe she was taken, and once that happens, it's often impossible to find out who did it like any missing person case even with the best police force. But having said that this was a police force that made so many massive errors early on in the case that it was clear they were out of their depths and didn't have a clue what they were doing. For instance, they failed to seal off the apartment, which was a crime scene from the beginning and potentially destroyed vital evidence early on. No descriptions of her were given to border police after she vanished, and valuable time was lost amongst other big obvious 6 it was hard to take them seriously. And then the clown went and wrote a book stating he knew something the rest of us didn't when really it was clear he was an incompetent leader who should never have been at the helm of such a case.

Barry George had convictions for indecent assault and attempted rape, and had been charged with various other violent/sex crimes over the years. He was also once arrested in the grounds of Kensington Palace where princess Diana was living, wearing a balaclava and carrying rope and a hunting knife in his bag. He was a serial harasser and stalker of women, and was obsessed with female celebrities, including Jill Dando. He was really into guns and he lived round the corner. It was far, far more likely to be him than a Serbian hitman or some paedo conspiracy.

No it always looked dodgy even at the time. The two things that struck me from the original trial was the guy clearly wasn't the brightest but there was an almost total lack of forensic evidence after searching his place. Also was seemingly no motive as they said he was obsessed with her but all the clippings and everything they found was from After the carefully planned killing. Becoming obsessed AFTER a celeb was killed around the corner from you is not motive. It just seemed as he lived very close and was the right personality type let's say, he was just rounded up and pressure to close the case and no alternatives led to a horrible misscarage. I can't be 100% sure, but it just didn't seem a good conviction.

I remember his case so well. What's really weird now is that it wasn't even so far back that the surveillance state wasn't a thing. It was 2007, so the whole security theatre thing, surveillance, data mining, and identity tracking were well into swing and yet a young boy was able to utterly vanish from existence in pretty much the most spied on nation on earth. Hopefully everything was planned, and he's out there now living his best life in a warm country somewhere. Unfortunately that's probably not at all how it ended for him.

2007? No, not at all. Remember, less that 50% of the UK had a broadband connection, and even less had dial up. Facebook didn't exist, most private property in the UK wouldn't have had cctv and if they did it'd be recorded over or otherwise not kept for longer than 24 hrs. Edward Snowden revavations would be another 7 or 8 years and this was still all before Instagram tiktok Snapchat etc. 2007 was very different in terms of tech advances and it's not really unsurprising that it was missed.

Move forward with the data years, perhaps up to present time, analyse movements etc. If the target had a mobile it potentially might be a useful line of enquiry, also if he were abducted the abductor must have contacted him in some way, ruthlessly pursue every possible vector, again deploy ML where it could be beneficial. No doubt they already use these models in the surveillance state so could assist - just an idea.

I think this one really is a mystery. There’s no evidence that points overwhelmingly in any direction at all. Unfortunately I think the most likely outcome when someone disappears for this length of time is they are dead especially at that age. Rare exceptions when people pop up after 20 years but in the vast majority of cases that’s not gonna happen. The most likely outcome is he met up with someone who either lied about who they were or lied about their intentions. They then killed him and got rid of the body somewhere. At this point without a confession or accomplice coming forward it will be forever unsolved in my opinion.

View on Reddit #43820807

This is what always infuriates me about this case. Whether the McCanns killed her or not - and for full disclosure I believe they did - they should have been done for child neglect. They most certainly would have been had they been a working class family on a package holiday. They actively turned down a babysitting service and there's credible evidence they drugged the kids so they could go out and drink with their mates and they just..got away with it. And every time it's raised that they should have been punished by the law we're told the family has suffered enough...like Madeline is a possession they lost instead of a human being in her own right. Her parents neglected her and directly or indirectly got her killed (there is no way on Earth she is still alive after that media circus) and the only result is that they've gotten rich off the back of it. Despicable people.

There is absolutely no way the McCann's could have done it. Logistically almost impossible.

> They actively turned down a babysitting service and there's credible evidence they drugged the kid True, they didn't use the night crèche, but there is literally zero evidence that they drugged their children. This is one of many pieces of misinformation that's often mentioned when Madeleine is brought up. Also, many resorts in the area offered a "listening-in service" in which a member of staff would periodically go door-to-door and report to the parents if any children were crying. The fact that these services were available at the time shows that it wasn't uncommon for parents to go out to dinner and leave their children in the hotel rooms. Despite this though, the McCanns weren't staying in a hotel and left the apartment door unlocked. I don't condone what they did, but it's basically within the realms of what other people were doing at the time.
View on Reddit #43841909

turntricks@reddit

"Other people were also neglecting their kids so what they did was fine" is one helluva argument when it comes to a vulnerable child suffering the consequences of her parents' laziness.
View on Reddit #43842175

TheGreatBatsby@reddit

Read the last paragraph, I don't condone their behaviour. I'm just saying that at the time, it wasn't an uncommon thing to do. Charging then for neglect would mean charging every parent who used a listening-in service. Also, you're out here claiming they drugged their kids and got rich off of their child's disappearance. Neither of which are true. Why lie?

First, the crime occurred on Portuguese soil, not British soil, placing it under Portuguese jurisdiction. Second, there is no conclusive evidence that Madeleine’s British family committed the crime. It's about as convincing as a tarot reading. In all probability, several people were Jack the Ripper. Someone killed a woman, the press went nuts, the details were highly public, and various other opportunists then took advantage of the situation. Serial killers don't tend to pop up from nowhere, kill a bunch of unconnected people, then vanish never to kill again.

Suzy Lamplugh is another high-profile unsolved missing person case. Somewhat closer to me in North Wales is another missing person case - Trevaline Evans. She closed her antiques shop in Llangollen with a note on the door saying something like “back in 5 minutes” in 1990, and she hasn’t been seen since. Recently both her husband and son have passed on, sadly without the case being solved. There’s also something of a mystery behind the identity of one man involved in The Great Train Robbery, he was known only as “The Irishman”, IIRC.

I think John Cannan is the most likely suspect for killing Suzy Lamplugh. They were in the area where Suzy Lampugh worked and the MO of the killer exactly matches the MO of Cannan who was convicted of a similar killing around a year later but this time the body was found. Cannan died in prison recently so it's unlikely we are ever going to get anymore details at this stage unless a body is fouhnd.
View on Reddit #43846943

crucible@reddit

Ah, that ties in with another comment - if he’s passed on, presumably the police san now say they “strongly believe” he was responsible?
View on Reddit #43873316

dvb70@reddit

This was the police statement from the last time the case was reopened in 2915. "My informed theory is that Suzy was stalked by John Cannan. He probably spoke to her, might even have taken her on a date. Suzy certainly fitted the profile of what John Cannan sought, in that she was blonde, attractive, worked at an estate agent, a very presentable young lady who came from a good family. Little doubt that Cannan stalked her, little doubt that Cannan viewed properties with her, that he observed her through the windows of the estate agents which probably drew him to go in and seek to view properties. I think that Suzy got into a row with Cannan on the day, he abducted her from the car, or made her get into the vehicle he had at the time. There then ensued probably quite a very heated row where he basically drove off abducting her. Where he went from there is a matter of conjecture"

One semi-plausible theory about "The Ulsterman" in The Great Train Robbery is that his name was Osterman and someone misheard it as Ulsterman. Given that most of the gang were from London you can imagine Osterman being misunderstood when said in a Cockney accent. An underworld "fixer" named Sammy Osterman was a known associate of convicted Great Train Robber Tommy Wisbey. Graham Satchwell a detective who worked on the case put his name in the frame along with Freddie Sansom - an uncle of the former England footballer Kenny Sansom. Kenny Sansom's father and another uncle were investigated by the police about being involved in the robbery but Kenny Sansom himself said the police were investigating the wrong Sansoms and should have questioned his uncle Freddie.

My local murder, in 2008 Andrew Cunningham was stabbed to death in his trailer in the industrial park in Earlsfield, South West London, in a murder The Independent called '[The murder nobody wants to help solve](https://www.independent.co.uk/news/uk/crime/the-murder-nobody-wants-to-help-solve-1726198.html)'. Andrew Cunningham was convicted in 2001 of sexually assaulting a teenage girl, he was placed on the sex offender's register and spent some time in prison. I learnt about this case when I worked at a pub just down the road from where it happened and one of my regulars got a bit drunk and started telling me about it. He was at the time a regular at the same pub Cunningham was a regular at The Corner Pin. He said that basically everyone knew who did it, but absolutely nobody was going to talk to the police as everyone felt justice had been done. Apparently the day before the murder, in 2008, he was seen inviting a few 14 year old schoolgirls into his trailer. Met police interviewed over 1000 people in connection to the case but could get anyone to Even Cunningham's ex wife said ["He had what was coming to him. No one should feel sorry for him," while his daughter said: "I want to spit on his grave."](https://www.mylondon.news/news/south-london-news/unsolved-murder-south-london-paedophile-17836260). This is a case that will never be solved.

While the organisation responsible is solved, no one has ever been convicted for the Warrington bombing, which killed two little boys: Tim Perry and Jonathan Ball. Tim and Jonathan were innocent children who posed absolutely no threat to the IRA. They were apparently at the shops for Mother's Day, and never came home. The result was so senseless that even the IRA were horrified, yet no one has ever been convicted for Jonathan and Tim's murders. Similarly: -The arson murders of Dr. Sabah Usmani and her five children: Hira, Maheen, Sohaib, Muneeb and Rayyan. -Murder of Emily Salvini -Disappearance of David Spencer and Patrick Warren -Murder of Tracey Mertens -Murder of Joel Urhie

Richie Edwards, their guitarist, disappeared in the 90s & his car was found abandoned at a service station near a bridge which is notorious for people taking their own lives, so it’s suspected that that’s what happened. No evidence of his death has ever been found though or confirmed sightings of him alive. He was eventually legally declared presumed dead.

It's likely that it was a made up story from someone who already knew about him, but I'd like to think he's still out there.

And look at the number of people who disappear every year in the UK. Obviously nearly all are found/turn up but a significant number just...aren't here anymore. Even accounting for people who go off grid, there must be a fair number of murderers who are just walking around.
View on Reddit #43817892

khazroar@reddit

I'd be shocked if more than the tiniest handful of missing persons were well concealed murders. Disposing of a body with complete stealth is vastly more difficult than simply killing and leaving someone without the killer being linked to it. There have been a number of cases listed here that are obvious murders that were simply done and the person walked away, and it can be remarkably difficult to ever figure out who the person was. Taking control of the body and trying to make it disappear creates so many more opportunities to be caught, rather than just a moment without witnesses. I'd bet the majority of missing people who don't turn up again have simply left one life behind to love another, without going truly off grid, and then the next largest portion are undiscovered suicides, followed by undiscovered accidental deaths.
View on Reddit #43821059

jonewer@reddit

Ah it's easy. Dig a hole in a field and fill it back in. Make an anonymous call to the police saying the body is buried there. Police will dig up your hole and find nothing. Once they're gone, bury the body in the hole. Police won't look there because they've already looked there.

View on Reddit #43824698

onemanandhishat@reddit

Aside from the risk of the tide washing it up, most people don't live right next to the ocean, and these days you'd have to factor in the possibility of your mobile phone being tracked, and an alibi for the time it takes to drive to the ocean. Also if you need to transport the body, it's quite possible it'll leave a lot of traces inside the vehicle you use.

Most homocides are easier to solve, significant amount of murders are done by someone the victim knows, and in most cases it's in the family. You don't need to be Holmes to solve them. Wolfdarkeneddoor@reddit

The Daily Mirror recently published a list of 1,000 unsolved murders going back decades. However, there are apparently officially 2,500 unsolved murders in the whole of the UK going back to the 1940s. The true number is invariably a lot higher. Different police forces count their oldest unsolved crimes, e.g. Suffolk Police count their oldest unsolved murder as 11-year old Linda Smith in 1961. However, there are older crimes than this (e.g. the murder of Heather Abbott at Mildenhall in 1952). On the other hand Merseyside police counted up to 169 unsolved murders. When I looked some of these up on the British Newspaper Archive, some were tragic cases where someone had murdered someone & then taken their own life. So technically those crimes remained unsolved. Also what is counted in the stats appears to have changed. I've seen older lists of unsolved crimes & they sometimes counted the victims of hit & run accidents. I don't think that is done today. It wasn't unusual for a driver in a fatal accident in the past to be charged with manslaughter. Occasionally inquest juries found the victims of botched abortions were murdered. Finally, there are a lot of open verdicts. Often someone had died from an overdose but they couldn't determine intent, so an open verdict was often returned. However, some cases were highly suspicious but it was difficult to prove that the person was harmed by someone else. So it is hard to work out how many unsolved murders there are in the UK. But this is thrown into sharp relief by the number of cold cases in the US, an estimated 250,000 since 1980.

Suzy Lamplugh. The recently deceased John Cannan seems a very likely suspect, but there is also a very reasonable and rational school of thought suggesting there might have been something else going on. Some have claimed she was corrupt and got into something dodgy, or she was another Claudia Lawrence, or she was up to something else that afternoon and it was just a tragic coincidence that Cannan got her.

Charlene Downes, the girl from Blackpool who went missing when she was 14. It was publicised that she was killed and put into kebab meat but the two accused were acquitted. Reading the Social Services reports on Pinterest about things happening in her home and the amount of pedophiles given access to her, the poor girl never stood a chance.
View on Reddit #43816502

Tough-Cup-7753@reddit

after reading more about this case i strongly believe the family were either involved or knew the person who killed her. the only evidence pointing to the kebab shop workers actually doing anything to her was a recording of them talking about using a girl’s body for kebab meat, but it couldn’t even be used as evidence due to mistranslation. charlene's name was never mentioned and honestly sounds more like a sick joke than a confession. but a family who were basically prostituting their 14 year old daughter? yeah they should’ve been looked into more
View on Reddit #43824951

The parents were in bed with the BNP for a while to spread the kebab meat story, and various narratives about 'Asian grooming gangs'. Meanwhile at the time Charlene disappeared, they had a convicted paedo awaiting sentencing boarding with them (in a home with multiple children) and other paedophiles were known to frequently visit the family home. Then there was the evidence of Charlene being prostituted by her parents. I think even the BNP disowned them after all this came to light. Vile vile people.

You get used to not looking at them. Or in my case, flicking down to read them, then mentally parking the words until the action gets there. There is an openly racist bit of yellow face in an earlier episode of Mrs Brown's Boys - other shows have been "cancelled" for less, even Little Britain didn't go that far as the use of blackface was not the subject of the joke.  I pointed this out on Reddit, knowing how much Reddit hates it and will openly make jokes like this reply in a serious thread about child murders (which I'm fully behind btw, not complaining. The joke that is, not the child murders!) and you'd think I'd just suggested murdering the people behind the show given the backlash.  All I did was link to the clip and say "let's spread this around Twitter" given Twitter was the "go to" place for "outrage" and things being cancelled at the time, the media were hot on picking it up and making a big deal about it.

Jill Dando and although outside of the UK, Maddie... The later is more or less solved though by a Youtube documentary based on the book published by the dismissed investigator. For those who can't be bothered to watch the doc ; all of the details given by their friends, witnesses and police dogs all point to an accident that the parents covered up. There were so many discrepancies and such weird behaviour from the parents according to the police and witnesses without mentioning the political intervention.
View on Reddit #43834613

So what are the German prosecutors doing with Christian Brueckner? They have no skin in the game. Also the police dog evidence is completely misunderstood and misconstrued to support the narrative that the parents were involved. The so-called "cadaver dog" would also alert to dried blood from a living person, but more importantly, unless backed up by physical evidence, all a sniffer dog barking means is that a dog barked. There's zero credible evidence that the parents were involved.

She was either murdered in the 6 minute gap between the penultimate and final stations OR the carriage full of blood and her corpse passed through several stations unnoticed. The killer jumped from a moving train or left a station covered in blood without anyone noticing. We even have the killer's DNA but it's never been detected again.

The most interesting and oldest known unsolved crime in Great Britain is the murder of Mary Ashford, which occurred on May 27, 1817, in Erdington, near Birmingham. Mary Ashford, a 20-year-old woman, was found dead in a water-filled pit, and her death remains a mystery to this day. If you don’t normally follow links, perhaps the mention of _trial by battle_ will get a click. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ashford_v_Thornton Details of the Crime… The Night Before: Mary had attended a dance with her friend and reportedly left with a man named Abraham Thornton. The Discovery: Her body was found the next morning, showing signs of assault, raising suspicions of rape and murder. The Trial: Abraham Thornton was arrested and tried for her murder. Despite substantial public outcry, he was acquitted after presenting an alibi and citing lack of sufficient evidence. A Curious Twist: The case is further shrouded in mystery due to its uncanny similarity to another unsolved murder of a woman named Barbara Forrest, which occurred in the same area, on the same day (May 27), 157 years later, in 1974. This has led some to speculate about eerie coincidences or connections between the two cases. Mary Ashford’s murder, unresolved for over 200 years, continues to be one of Britain’s oldest cold cases.

At the time of her death, her television work included co-presenting the BBC One programme Crimewatch. On the morning of 26 April 1999, Dando was shot dead outside her home in Fulham, south-west London, prompting the biggest murder inquiry conducted by the Metropolitan Police and the country's largest criminal investigation since the hunt for the Yorkshire Ripper. A local man, Barry George, was convicted and imprisoned for the murder, but after eight years in prison he was acquitted following an appeal and retrial. Not a well known one but a young woman called Catrin McGuire who went to uni in Bangor, close to me, went missing in 2022 and hasn’t been seen since. She had no history of mental health issues, had made loads of near and far future plans by applying to jobs, buying tickets for events, doing uni work, applying for things within the uni and one day she left her uni home to meet her friends and was never seen again. My heart aches for her family and friends and I honestly thought we’d hear an answer by now. Bangor is a very small town and if she had harmed herself, which has been essentially ruled out due to the factors I already mentioned, she’d have been found. She’s just completely vanished.
View on Reddit #43819937

Thought the rumour was she'd ended up in Holyhead? It is a shame as Bangor is small enough she'd have surely been seen or spotted by someone, unless she somehow fell in the Menai but even then, I'm always surprised the Uni doesn't have anything mentioning her. Plus people can hide their mental health. It is tragic and hopefully she'll be found safe or answers will be.

2 friends of mine that had allegedly committed suicide but I had seen them twice that week, at the cinema and shopping in town. If you were going to do that would you go and buy a load of new clothes from New Look the day before? I think someone killed them and then made it look like a suicide.

I find this site really interesting: http://www.unsolved-murders.co.uk Also, on YouTube, you can watch old Crimewatch episodes from the 80s onwards. Quite a few of those featured aren’t solved. I watched an episode where there had been a bank robbery at the bottom of my road. Way before I lived here but it was interesting to see old footage of the area.

That's a good site for beginning research, but it's a bit rough & ready. Some of the murders have actually been solved & some are clearly not murders at all. The British Newspaper Archive is the best place online for in-depth reading.

The most famous one of all time is arguably Jack the Ripper. The case is rather famous; an unidentified Victorian serial killer who targeted ladies of the night in a seemingly random set of attacks that the police couldn't solve. The one which I've been most interested in learning about is Andrew Gosden, who disappeared in London. To this day, it's not known what happened, and the details don't really make much sense. He gave indication he planned to return (leaving money, chargers, clothing, etc behind), but also gave indication he *didn't* plan on coming back (most famously at the station, when he bought a one-way ticket despite the ticket lady mentioning a return was only 50p more; this alone was reason for the tiller to remember Gosden during questioning). Alan Wood's murder is another case which is strangely fascinating; despite a full DNA profile and a CCTV still, we still have no leads on the identity of the killer. [https://www.lincs.police.uk/police-forces/lincolnshire-police/areas/campaigns/campaigns/alan-wood-murder/what-we-know/](https://www.lincs.police.uk/police-forces/lincolnshire-police/areas/campaigns/campaigns/alan-wood-murder/what-we-know/) r/UnresolvedMysteries is chock-full of tragic, yet morbidly interesting mysteries and tales. I myself have contributed in the past with a non-death mystery in the form of the disappearing Monaco diamond.

There's also 20% fewer traffic cops then there were in 2016. They're basically non-existent where I live. There are 4500 traffic cops now out of 170,000 warranted offices in total. There are about 4000 prosecutions a year for malicious communications (that includes but it not limited to social media posts). That's of around 1.5m people dealt with for offences a year. Obviously policing failing have everything to do with speeding and social media posts. Nothing to do with cuts to policing or anything ridiculous like that.
