Tesla’s Model Y Went From 42nd In January To Europe’s Best-Seller In March

Posted by Fearless_Neat_6654@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 158 comments

e136@reddit

Clearly the Y is a great car. But will people at some point start to want variety? If the car continues to sell amazing for 10 more years, 1 in 8 of all cars on the road will be a Y in some areas. Right now it's a bit less since it's still somewhat new. Or will this turn into an iPhone situation where everyone has the same thing and doesn't mind? I think the Y would benefit from having more free colors to choose from for people that want a Y but also want something different. I do think it was a smart move to make the 3 and Y more visually distinct. Digging into the numbers, it looks like in 1921, over 50% of new cars were Fords (basically one model with some variations), then in the 1960s 5% of all new cars were Beatles, and today about 1 or 2% of all new cars are Ys, so maybe this isn't as big of an issue as I am thinking.

Note that the ones sold in Europe are built in Berlin. Their factories are Shanghai, Fremont, Austin, Berlin. And all have decent build quality more a days, although new trims and models are still know to have issues when first produced.

EV Prices Are Falling, But Automakers Are Eating Nearly $8,000 Per Sale To Pull It Off

Posted by Anchor_Aways@reddit | cars | View on Reddit | 231 comments

e136@reddit

Agreed- many people are making the choice between electric and gas and higher gas prices absolutely are swaying some people. The question is how many? High electricity prices are hurting the EV's advantage. If a state like california really wanted to encourage EV and electric appliance, heating, etc adoption, they should build more power plants to bring down the cost of electricity.

It's because manufactures have seen the success of the Model Y and want a slice of the pie. But if I was in charge of Ford, GM, etc I would probably target both the lower and higher price ranges. Just so hard to compete with Tesla because they have no unions or dealers and a couple other advantages. Once Ford, GM, etc build up strong footholds in the lower and higher price markets, they could consider competing directly with Tesla IMO. Obviously a lot of the manufacturers are in a tough spot so there are no obvious paths forward. This is just my opinion.

It's also less than the model X which Tesla canceled. I think they'll sell it for a couple more years to safe face and then cancel it

Why does a 4.0L V8 sound deeper than a 2.0 I4?

e136@reddit

With the v8, your ear heard a firing pattern that's the same frequency of the RPM, but with the inline 4, your ear heads a drinking pattern that's twice as high, the frequency of each cylinder fire. The reason for this is that a cross plane v8 has an uneven firing order. Your ear picks up on every time you hear the pattern repeats, which occurs twice for every time all cylinder fire. Since all cylinders fire once every 2 full rotations, that means the audio patter starts again once every rotation. You'll here the pattern once starting at the left bank, then a rotation later you will hear the same pattern starting at the right bank. On an online four, since the firing order is very even, the only pattern you hear is an individual cylinder firing. That occurs twice every crankshaft rotation, hence twice the frequency at a given RPM. This only applies to even firing online fours (99.9% of them) and cross plane, uneven firing v8s (90% of them).

Why do ugly cars exist? How is it that designs like these make it all the way to production and sale when everyone seems to agree that a model is ugly? (updated)

The model Y was the best selling EV by a huge margin last year and most buyers thing it looks decent. I think you just mean that reddit hates how it looks. The answer to that is that car manufacturers don't care what reddit thinks, they just want high sales volumes. Source: https://www.caranddriver.com/news/g64540955/bestselling-evs-2025/

I like it a lot. Here is my constructive feedback (feel free to ignore): Put the list of guesses at the bottom. Or maybe exclude that completely. Make sure the play button is visible when you first load the page. When I first loaded the page I was checking my headphones because I didn't hear anything. I think it should be multiple choice, with "number of cylinders" first. But only give 4 options, tailored to the audio clip (e.g. 2, 3, 4, or 6 for this clip). If they get that wrong, mark the bad guess red and let them guess again until they get it. Once they get it, do the same for aspiration. Finally, do the same for model (skip country) and only give 4 options that all seem reasonable. And let us do at least 10 in a row per day or maybe add a global scoreboard like sporcle has. Finally, check out motortrend or car and driver or road and track used to have this game about 10 years ago so see if they have any good ones. But overall it's great already.

Got it. So it's kind of like a tie breaker if all the other numbers agree? I agree with that. It would also be a good tie breaker for which is faster is non ideal conditions. But I think you will basically never be comparing cars with identical mph and hp numbers in the real world. So I don't see much use in a tie breaker.

Looking at estimates online, they say the sales ratio in 2025 was 1 S to 4 trucks to 16 X. So if they cut the X, it leads you to think they will soon cut something selling 4 times less. But those are just estimates since they don't publish these numbers.

I think this is called price anchoring. Basically a company will offer something for sale at way way more than it's worth ($8000) and then it kaes you think $100 a months is a deal. It's a deal in comparison but still not worth it to me. (For many rich people I'm sure it's worth it). Other example I see of this is ski tickets- they now charge $350 a day to make the $1000 season pass seam like a good deal. But it's still a rip off.

Volvo Has Dropped Luminar and Lidar for 2026 Models

To clarify, the prediction that Karpathy is making that has occurred here is that a manufacturer has dropped lidar (at least for 2026) due to supply chain risk and states they can make a safe system without it. Karpathy's prediction is also they they will drop it permanently. Let's see what happens there. I have no skin in the game so I don't know. But Karpathy's prediction is that it won't come back.
