I noticed the other thread was all about the design, so the range seems useful to mention. It's 440 miles EPA, with the ability to add 200 miles in 10 minutes. If you knock off 20% for real world highway range, that means driving for five hours, charging for 10 minutes, then driving for another 2.5 hours.
The only problem with the 350kW chargers is reliably getting one to put out 350kW. Im my four years of experience with EVs, I just assume a charger will max out at around half it's rating. Especially if there are other people charging.
Does the RS Etron GT have a 400v or 800v battery architecture? Half speed is about what you'd expect out of a 350kw charger if you have a 400V battery.
Good question. It actually is 800v, the real issue is that a lot of station installers cheap out and understand the connection/transformer to the mains and then split that already under-sized connection to all the chargers. I've hit my max charging speed of 270kW once or twice, but it's rare.
Same. I hit 265 kW exactly one time out of about 20 times charging at Electrify America 350 kW chargers. Had to have the car properly conditioned and warm ambient temps.
I was going to refute you as I've never had a problem hitting close to 270 when I'm at a sufficiently low SoC. However I saw where you mentioned EA. I avoid most all EA stations on my common road trip routes and have opted for the Mercedes-branded ChargePoints at Buc-ee's stations and some of the newer EVGo Pilots. Never have had a problem with speed at those.
Yeah, EA's stations are the worst and this. But they were free for me for the last three years, so I put up with it in exchange for thousands of dollars of free electricity.
Exactly. I'll take free and slower over paid, since I'm generally not in a huge rush.
EA has been significantly better for me more recently (more spots available, less down for maintenance, fewer app errors), but I still consider it a lackluster experience.
I just bought a BMW i4 M60 that comes with two free years of EA, so I'll likely be stuck with EA. That being said, I hardly take my car on very long trips.
I pick it up on Saturday, so I'll let you know. Agreed, it's not a head-turner like the etron GT, but it's still attractive overall.
I'm excited to pay ~$500 less a month for a car I don't drive that much. Should be similar performance overall and newer tech. I expected handling to be slightly worse, no 4-wheel steering, less refined interior, etc.
I plan on providing a detailed write-up once I get some miles behind the wheel. Honestly, I wish Audi would focus on the following:
* More reasonable price range. Quite the BS games with discounts since we know most of these cars are selling for WELL below MSRP.
* Better range
* New MMI / technology
Yeah, the pricing is just dumb, but their hands are tied by Porsche. Sure, the RS E-Tron GT should be a $100,000 to 120,000 car, but then why would anyone buy a Taycan that's basically the exact same thing but costs sixty grand more?
And the MMI is by far my biggest gripe. The number of times it just refuses to load at all is infuriating. Which is weird because just like a decade or so ago, Audi was known for having the best in-dash technology.
Have you done the math/do you actually take that many long trips that the difference is thousands and not hundreds?
I actually have $500 EVGo credit from a GM vehicle from a few years ago and that’s what I’ve always burned on the EVGo and Chargepoint stations. I still have $62 left on it apparently.
In my case, yes, actually. My mother was diagnosed with a relapse of breast cancer shortly after I got my first GT, so for a year or so I was driving there to spend time with her and help out every weekend, and after she passed last January I kept going basically every weekend to help my siblings take care of the house and help my grandparents. It's about 65 miles each way, plus add in some driving while I was over there (to get groceries, home repair stuff, etc.), plus add in that I don't exactly drive at the speed limit when I'm on the highway, plus add in keeping charge between 20 and 80%, and especially when it gets cold add in range shrinkage. Basically, I would get there, run the car down to 80 or so miles of range, and then fully recharge to 80% at an EA station on the way back.
Plus more than a few road trips from the NYC metro to Montreal and DC, and a handful of drives into Maine when my son was looking at colleges. It's definitely been a couple grand.
Yikes, sorry to hear all of that. I feel you though. My father had liver cancer a couple years back and I spent a good six months or more practically living with them and also helping my mom out with everything after he passed. One of the last things we worked on while he was still healthy was actually installing an EVSE at their house, so that saved a lot of headache on my end thankfully. Fast charging for day to day use obviously adds a lot more and I'd totally be leaning on EA more if I was in that situation for sure
Yeah, that's a fair point. Still, a 400kW peak means 200kW charging for most of the battery range. Being able to plug in at 30% and have solid 200kW charging up to 70%, which would take maybe 20 minutes, is still very good.
Interesting, I had no idea. My lightning maxes at ~180 anyway, so pretty much all 350kw chargers max it out. That's rather disappointing to hear, I was hoping to upgrade to something with an 800V architecture in the next few years specifically for better charging speed.
At least historically BMW EVs have tended to beat the EPA range with their EVs on the highway in real world tests. They may have gotten less conservative though with their new models to be able to advertise longer ranges.
There are some things that Tesla does very well with their infotainment system. Everything specifically related to the car works great. It’s feature rich and intuitive. They update the software more frequently than my iPhone and are always adding new features, functionality, and making things more user friendly and foolproof. The remote controls work great. The entertainment apps are pretty bad though, IMO. Because they all rely on cellular connectivity, which can be spotty, if you run into a dead spot they pretty much crash. You’ll get a cryptic message and then need to switch apps to restore functionality once you have service again. Also, little things like it not always remembering where you left off on a playlist. It definitely needs some work.
BMW is definitely more restrained but it all just works all the time. I like having the option of using CarPlay (not an option on the Tesla) is nice, but their built in nav system is pretty great. I don’t have any complaints with it. They’re not always adding new features but it all works well.
It’s well known that Tesla ekes out every last mile during EPA testing and credits in order to advertise longer ranges. It’s not cheating or lying, but it does mean that it’s basically impossible to achieve their range numbers under normal mixed driving, especially in the cold or after a few years of degradation.
Probably minus 25%, which would still be driving for 3+ hours, stopping for maybe 20 min and driving for another 2-2.5 hours. Which is still not awful.
Nope, that would be great.
My MachE GT Performance Edition goes from around 260 in the warmer months to around 170 (and less when I crank the heat) in the colder weather.
I'd be thrilled if I could get 200-225 with the heat on. This new architecture looks pretty nifty!
Ironically, ICE cars get heating free as a result of their very nature, and for EV's it's a tax. Although I think motors/batteries still need cooling and still produce heat. Interesting distinction.
I have a 23.
To be clear, running the heat contributes to the range loss. There's still a cold temperature penalty on the battery, even with the heat off.
> Probably minus 25%, which would still be driving for 3+ hours, stopping for maybe 20 min and driving for another 2-2.5 hours. Which is still not awful.
3 hours would be 210 miles, I'm pretty sure the cold weather range would be significantly more than that, I'd guess around 300 miles which would be 4+ hours.
Thats just wrong. Most of the decreased range comes from heating the cabin and battery. Your range in the winter is significantly higher, if you precondition the car, while charging
>Which is still not awful.
I've driven harder than that, but that type of driving is really a young man's game. Simply isn't good for your health to sit that long without moving around a bit.
I can't find specific info confirming that it will have a heat pump, but BMW australia claims that all BMW EVs have heat pumps, so I am pretty sure this one will. That should help out a lot with cold weather range.
> That should help out a lot with cold weather range.
I'd love to see a comparison. When the MME got rumored to come out with a heat pump, I started peeping over in /r/tesla and the consensus from that gang seemed to be the heat pump isn't the magical bullet everyone makes it out to be in the range department.
Heat pumps are great and all. But they have their limits. And that's when the really expensive heat strips fire up.
Typically when it’s cold out, there is a lot less green as the plants have died and the leaves have fallen off the trees. The landscape appears more gray and dull.
I wasn’t aware that BMW had caught up in that department. For so many years, it seemed like Tesla was so far ahead of everyone in range for mainstream cars that I wasn’t sure if anyone would ever catch up.
I think this is a German thing. VAG does it too. Most people I've seen dyno a stock GTI or Golf R, for example, end up getting the rated BHP at the wheels themselves.
I remember journalists acting like it was a big mystery, 10 years ago, why the "210hp" GTI kept up with the 250hp Focus ST around tracks.
It's because insurance and some EU "performance car" regulations used to be based partially on HP numbers, so they would just knock 50hp off the published total to fuck with the bureaucrats.
> I think this is a German thing.
From what I've heard anecdotally, the HP/TQ figures for German cars are pretty much a soft *guarantee* that the vehicle will make X numbers, rather than sandbagged Ferrari press car shenanigans.
By about 18-20% on the highway, correct. It's surprisingly high, especially compared to cars from US manufactures which consistently under perform by 8-10%
Have an i4 rated by BMW at 220 miles. That’s what I typically get in the dead of winter. During particularly brutal cold spells where temps are in the single digits to low teens, I’ll get around 200 miles.
In warmer weather I see closer to 250. Still bad overall but still better than what they quote.
Yeah, I love everything about the m50 except the range. If the range was better I would own one. The i3 solves this but I'd much rather have a hatchback.
Let's just pause for a sec and realize that *400 hundred thousand watts* is an insane level of electrical power to be concentrated in a device like a car. Pretty impressive stuff.
People claim to be careful enthusiasts who care about the engineering and technology, deride designers for being stupid and they should stop ruining cars and leave it to engineers
Yet when there's a new car all they talk about is the exterior design.
That's all there is to talk about nowadays except for how many unnecessary screens they added to the interior. All engines except high performance cars are soulless downsized 4 cylinders or indistinguishable electric motors.
I mean, aside from that fact this is segment leading range. This is the UK's longest range EV, with premium segment level handling, confront an features, for a reasonably affordable price.
Yes engineers are interesting but the tech in batteries and mirrors is also important.
Let's not pretend if this was an ICE people would be talking about the engine line up, they would still talk about the design.
> deride designers for being stupid and they should stop ruining cars and leave it to engineers
Which is silly, because all their favourite cars were, of course, designed by car designers. If you want to see a car designed by an non-designer engineer, look no further than the BMC Landcrab (and even that was still hastily tweaked by Pininfarina, against Issigonis's wishes).
I wasn't just referring to the looks; to each their own, Pininfirina did what he could by refining nose and tail. The interior is spartan, the driving position comically poor, the boot very small and most importantly, it was far removed from the product it was planned to be with sales suffering as a result. Why? Because nobody intervened in the engineer's vision of the car.
(Somewhere on Curbside Classic someone once commented Issigonis didn't see the need for big boots, since he "took his weekly shopping home in the door pockets of his Mini, from the off-licence")
Any electricians want to explain this high voltage fast charging stuff to me
I kinda have a feeling that it’s “high strung” and like would explode or deliver a lethal shock or something. Is it completely safe?
These aren't like the wall sockets in your home. There are additional communication connectors that do a handshake between the charger and the car and confirm the vehicle is able to receive the power before the big plugs are energized.
There are also fuses and other safety features to prevent things like people sticking a fork in it. This is why copper thieves cut the cables off because they aren't energized just sitting there.
Current is usually what limits you. It is what demands thick wires.
Typical charging of standard EVs today is pushing between 200-300A of current into 400V batteries. This is what is happening during 100-150kW charging which is very widespread.
Now let's say you pump in the same current at 800V. Basically, that makes it a 200kW charging cycle but the current is about the same.
A big reason why 400V was common on older EVs is that 380-400V AC is a very widespread power delivery (that's what most industrial machines use, you get 400V three phase power...). Converting it to 400V DC to charge a car is a little bit simpler than to 800V DC. Old cars used slower chargers, battery tech did not catch up yet, so 400V was a good compromise because there was no need for more yet.
Oh worm? The nearest major city to me, a common weekend trip, is about ~380 miles. So the only cars I had as an option were the Lucid, which I'm not buying because they can go tits up in the next 5 years. And the EQS which I'm not buying because it looks like melted plastic or a used bar of soap, readers choice.
It's just that purists don't like the designs. They're marmite with the general public, which is helping them because target buyers don't seem to be the ones the designs are turning off in large numbers.
So, people who are into cars find this design terrible, but the second someone isn’t into 4 wheeled motor wagons, they start loving it as if a switch has been flipped. That sounds very very interesting. Here’s a less interesting possibility. The car is still ugly as shit, but people don’t care because they just wanna buy a bmw! And there isn’t really some left brain right brain type of shit going on but people simply don’t care, like they never did!

> So, people who are into cars find this design terrible, but the second someone isn’t intrigued by 4 wheeled motor wagons, they start loving it as if a switch has been flipped.
Nope. A subset of people who are into cars find this design terrible because they have preconceived notions about what 1) the brand, and 2) cars in general should look like. People who don't have those preconceived notions judge it differently. Some like it, some dislike it (that's what marmite means in this sense), but they're not as rigid as purists and may even like it because it's *not* what purists think the brand and/or cars should look like. Also, purists aren't the only people into cars. There are car enthusiasts who like contemporary BMW design.
Yea probably. There’s an initial wow factor with all of the gimmicky lights that works on average joe. But I can’t imagine people prefer only touch screen and no buttons for things like seat heaters and steering wheel heaters and dashboard dimming. They probably just tolerate it because the engine and chassis make it drive great
That's just modern infotainment right now. People tend to have tunnel vision on BMW. Look at their competitors. They're all doing the same thing. Whether people like it or not - and obviously some do - if you're shopping for an entry to mid level premium car, all your choices take the same approach to interior design and UX.
Their engineering has carried their designs for ages at this point
Same way how a good personality makes someone otherwise unattractive to you suddenly a lot more interesting
That hasn’t been the case for their popular models like the 3 series and X3 and X5, etc. Most of their radical designs have been on other less popular models. The problem is that now it’s creeping into the 3 and X3.
Yeah, I remember the Hooydonk interview where they rationalize their split between the 3/5/7 and the “lifestyle/irrational” 2/4/6/8 models
Those are exceptions to the rule, and there are exceptions to that exception (eg M3/M4). Regardless, this brand has by and large been carried by its engineering prowess. I’m convinced M2 love is a byproduct of Stockholm syndrome is the car’s amazing credentials, not because it’s just “growing” on people
I'm mixed on the lineup.
Love: 7 series
Like: M3, 4 series, iX, X6, X4 (but the shape works better on the X6), X3 (the interior is garbage though)
Too boring to care about: X5, current and previous 5 series, current 3 series
Dislike: X2, 2 series gran coupe
The i3 in the OP I could like but I need to see it in person first.
I may not like everything but I like their design approach of trying to appeal to different groups of people.
To be clear, I'm not saying these are pretty cars. I'm saying I like the design.
That’s fair. I share some of your opinions, differ on others. My general disposition toward BMW started fading during the early F-chassis period when they started experimenting with GT models and figuring out how to simultaneously make their cars more derivative yet convoluted
So the models I gravitate towards are either full-on in an attempt at being striking (eg current 7) or stick to the basics without trying to reinvent a line (eg G20, and G30)
As far as I can see, the shapes of these are slave to bloated hard points and chasing extreme Cd figures, so we get these fat lumpy proportions with these overinflated silhouettes, so BMW tries to mask it with illusory gimmicks and arbitrarily re-writing legacy design cues for the sake of pushing out something contemporary
It’s probably what their interested demographic prefers. I’m just complaining about that reality
I do agree on bloated hard points particularly with respect to the current 5 series. It looks like the designers were told "these are your proportions, get to work." And the car is sky high because it has to accommodate the i5. That probably was the case with the 7 series too, but it works in their favor because large size is a positive for that segment.
I think only touch screen is generally not popular. I was not a fan of no buttons / dials for the heated seats, heated steering wheel, dashboard dimmer.
And requiring a bmw connect profile to be able to change if the key unlocks all doors or just driver on first click is dumb.
I enjoyed my 21 M2 Competition. It had buttons. Buttons are good.
I’ve been saying this for a long time now. The only Western OEM that’s somewhat competitive against the Chinese is BMW.
Their software is pretty good (by non-Chinese standards) and powertrain is actually very competitive even when you factor in cost.
The iX is probably the best overall EV you can buy in North America.
This will be my next car after my i4’s lease runs out.
Then people who prefer it can buy that. But Mercedes and BMW design diverged years ago and Mercedes' more elegant approach hasn't been enough to bridge the popularity and sales gap. The GLC will sell better than the i3 because it's a crossover. But I'm not sure it will beat the iX3.
We’ll see but this is the first time BMW’s strange design has fully cemented itself with its core models. The previous generations were way more conventional on purpose (they wanted their “niche” models to be wild looking).
Mercedes on the other hand has put more angles and curves to give their cars more shape after their EV designs were too soft and soap-like. The next GLC looks muscular and attractive. The iX3 looks like a geometric mess. The interiors are also no contest - MB looks premium and luxurious.
So to speak to OP’s original point - MB is bound to be way more competitive against the Chinese. They’re certainly not behind and not “2 generations.” That’s just ignorance because OP didn’t realize the GLC is launching as a BEV.
>This will be my next car after my i4’s lease runs out.
I look forward to buying your i3 when the lease is up. Please consider getting it in Le Castellet Blue with a brown interior.
The Lucid Air costs as much as this is projected to cost. "Tech" in EVs is batteries and motors, which Lucid also beats this at. I haven't used BMWs software so can't really speak to that but your other two points are poorly-researched or just false.
This is projected to start in the 50s. The Lucid Air starts at $71k and that trim has 100 miles less range.
So I don’t know what you are talking about.
And Lucid’s build quality and software is just awful.
The Lucid "Starts" at 71k before the $20,000 in discounts they give out [https://lucidmotors.com/offers?tab=lucid-air-offers](https://lucidmotors.com/offers?tab=lucid-air-offers)
The BMW is projected to "start" at 55k before the dealer markups.
I would expect the Lucid is actually cheaper, though it's hard to say before the BMW pricing is official.
Your throwaway line is also based on a lack of research or just false.
Dude, if we talk about discounts then BMWs also do crazy discounts for EVs.
> before the dealership markups
Bro it’s not 2021 anymore. BMW dealers discounts EVs like crazy. I got mine for $15k off MSRP before the lease incentives kicked in.
> feel free to check my math
You are adding shit like trade-in allowance and other temporary discounts (expire before end of March) in order to get to a “lower” price.
Like dude do you work for Lucid or something?
Very strong chance this’ll be my next car and my first EV. Yeah things like the Rivian R2 and R3X look cool, along with whatever Scout is cooking up, but I really want a sedan and this looks like it could shape up to be one of the best on the market in its class, ICE or EV.
You will probably love it. I see that you have a 430i. I have an i4 M50 and it’s already a much better car than the M440i and this will be a significant improvement due to the dedicated EV platform.
>It'll be like ~$20k more expensive is my guess.
Then it will be DOA. People will pay a premium for BMW and no affiliation to Elon Musk, but they won't pay that much.
Nah it will sell well. $20K for a BMW level experience vs. Tesla is worth it to most. The average starting price of a new car in the US is $50K, this won't be out of reach for that many.
I don’t get why people lump Tesla and bmw in the same league. The latter is a premium brand while the former is a mass market brand, the same league as Toyota or VW. Who in their right mind expects to pay the same for a Tesla vs BMW.
EV's have blurred the lines. EV's are quiet, composed, reliable, and laden with technology. For many luxury car buyers, that's all they're looking for.
Is the fake leather crap in a Tesla as nice as a BMW's? Of course not. Do people care? Most don't.
I don’t think base model bmws have had real leather for a while, unless you option for Napa leather. It’s just slight better quality fake leather lol, cause after a few years it looks like shit anyways
People everywhere, not just California, will pay $70k+ today for what they really want. I just don't think this car screams BMW luxury and there is going to be a lot more cross-shopping with cheaper EV brands than you might think.
Why do all the EV cars do this? Just release all the fucking trims at the same time like every ICE car literally ever. I don’t see the point to always release the top trim first.
They are limited in terms of the number of vehicles they can produce per day, so by releasing the top trims first they make as much profit per vehicle as possible and recoup their R&D costs faster.
Once sales of the top trims start slowing down then it makes financial sense to start producing lower trims.
They do this for ICE cars as well.
For the company, they need to make the capex money back ASAP. Higher income customers are also more willing to buy a new generation vehicle. People who are on a budget are more wary since if its their primary vehicle and they encounter issues then they're SOL.
Which is funny because Apple hasn’t even implemented the “release high end first” business model yet, as a matter of fact their computer CPUs follow the exact opposite model. The car companies beat Apple to the punch lmao.
They actually have now with the iPhone. The iPhone 16 and 16 Pro came out in Sept 2024, and the 16e came out in Feb 2025. The 17 and 17 Pro came out this past fall, but the 17e hasn’t been released yet. They also had spring releases for the SE and SE 2 while the higher end models released in the fall before.
I can’t think of a single instance where they did ngl. To my knowledge, every iPhone model releases at the same time, save for the budget variants like the SE and --e models.
Aha found it. I was thinking of Xs and XR. I was interested in the XR, but they released the more expensive ones a month before. I can imagine there being a significant $$$ gain from doing this.
[https://www.gamespot.com/articles/when-do-all-the-new-iphones-come-out-iphone-xs-xs-/1100-6461721/](https://www.gamespot.com/articles/when-do-all-the-new-iphones-come-out-iphone-xs-xs-/1100-6461721/)
The iPhone 12 generation was similar, with the 12 mini and 12 Pro Max releasing later, but that could have been a supply chain thing.
I was thinking it might’ve been the X series! But I was thinking too early. I was thinking the 8 and the X being released side by side, so I forgot about the XR and XS. Didn’t know they pushed out the XS sooner than the XR. That’s pretty weird, wonder what made them never do it again.
I believe that was supply chain because the 12 series was heavily affected by Covid (yet still one of my favorite modern iPhones, nothing looked better than the blue 12 Mini when it came out, and later on the purple 12, imo)
I doubt that, considering BMW’s website says the iX3 50 xDrive will have a starting price “around $60k.” The i3 will probably be around $50k if I had to guess based off of that.
My guess is the entry price (MSRP) will be around $60k. About the same as the existing i4 e40. Less than the i5 (obviously) which starts in the upper 60s.
Until now BMW has underrated their range in all EVs just like they underrate horsepower in gas cars. I would expect this to hit 400 miles under most condition.
> just like they underrate horsepower in gas cars
And their bikes. The S1000RR was rated for 193PS, but consistently measured around 210-215PS at the wheel when tested.
It’s kinda ugly but okay…
>Everything runs on the new BMW Operating System X software that brings Amazon’s Alexa+ AI-infused voice assistant inside the cabin.
Aight, I’m out.
BMWs already have Alexa support, they've had it for the better part of a decade. You have to manually set it up if you want to use it, or just ignore it like 99% of owners
Let’s not immediately assume that the person that’s sharing their opinion is ignorant, yeah? Have open dialogue with me first at least and then decide if you think I’m an idiot lol... Anyways, I’m aware that Alexa is and has been built in for several years already, I’m just sad that it’s being forced upon us in general and I wouldn’t be surprised in the near future if Alexa becomes some integral part of a “critical” system where you can’t “opt out” by simply not setting it up.
On a semi related note, I can envision a future where mod shops “disconnect” your car because people are tired of everything spying on them.
Every company is building AI into it, you can’t do a google search without the AI overview. I’m being forced to incorporate AI tools in my workflow, etc etc. If you can’t tell where we’re going with this then I’m glad you have enough agency to be blissfully unaware.
For years, electric cars had to be blob shaped to achieve even the limited range they had. 15 years of advancements in aerodynamics, batteries, and powertrain efficiency mean that we can finally have real styling in the EV space (like BMW’s Neue Klasse and Rivian’s blocky looks)
It has a massive 109kWh battery
Tesla has like an 80kWh battery. (For now)
I full expect Tesla to go to somewhere around 100+ kWh whenever they refresh the Model 3 more comprehensively down the line. Battery prices have come down so much that it's crazy not too other than weight.
> I full expect Tesla to go to somewhere around 100+ kWh whenever they refresh the Model 3 more comprehensively down the line.
They won't. Refresh it, I mean. It doesn't even have a timeline for refresh.
That comes out to a little over 4 miles/kwh. So that's very efficient as well. This is just crazy good range no matter how you look at it. The only asterisk is we don't have 3rd party verification yet. But I'm optimistic that will work out well.
They would have to redesign the suspension components for the added weight and create an all new pack for a small amount of buyers. I don't think it's gonna happen. Crash testing might also end up being affected. I think they've mentioned from their data that few buyers need over 300 miles of range.
Yeah but this thing is probably gonna cost 80k … and it competing against Tesla old models … wait till Tesla brings the newer tech into its cars … Tesla is volume as well , 2 million cars annually , this bmw will probably make 20-40k units annually … I love how people are so quick to put Tesla on its death bed …
I was watching a vid that said the iX3 is similarly priced to the X3 so if this follows for the i3 then it would range from around €60k to €80k (basically same as current 3 series). For comparison the Mercedes CLA EV starts at €53k where I am. I personally prefer the CLA on the outside but the i3 on the inside.
But at what price? If the i3 costs significantly more than a Tesla with similar range, most buyers will still go with the Supercharger network and brand familiarity.
The outside design is polarizing but that steering wheel is horrendous.
Why make additional notches at 3 and 11 where the spokes should be? Also why put a spoke dead center when there’s a display straight of the driver?
BMW and Rivian are going to dominate the western market at this rate with the i3, i5, and iX as premium options, the R2 (and later R1) as a “budget” option, and the R1T as a truck.
Unless chinese EVs are allowed in or another company pulls some big leap off, the R3 and i3 will be *everywhere* in the next 5 years.
Having this car on a lease or in a few years when ev depreciation hits is an absolute hit. Sure more EV tech like this will come out. However this is fantastic range and it has a smaller battery then other EVs with this range.
Visually the exterior changes are so so much better, and it’s a sexy looking bmw again.
The range, I hope it causes more competition for longer range vehicles. No one ever complained that they have to recharge or refill infrequently.
The M car version coming out later is going to have quad motors. I suspect it will be significantly faster than any vehicle Tesla has out at the time (since they have killed off the S and X).
While technically true, it's kind of irrelevant imo. This is a completely new car on a completely new platform that isn't actually on the road yet and it's being compared to something that is much older.
If you compare a phone to last year's model, in almost all cases the new one will indeed be better.
Competition is good but I don't see anything here that makes me think the Model 3 needs to be worried. And that is, what, a 9 year old car now? Yes it's been updated, but not a completely new car.
The only chance this car has is if its priced within $5-7k of a Model 3 and I don't think that is likely.
First EV I’ve seen that I’d buy over a Model 3.
Very cool. When it is time to buy one (soon), I’ll have to look at this. Wish it had some of the cool Tesla features like FSD but that’s not a deal breaker for me
Hating on new bmws is tradition
Here's the thread from the current gen 3 series release which is currently being circle jerked as peak
https://www.reddit.com/r/cars/comments/9ke619/first_official_images_of_the_new_2019_bmw_3/
To be fair, they have made a lot of hugely questionable design decisions in the last decade. It’s nice to see the buck-teeth grilles start to phase out, but I don’t have a lot of additional praise here.
Just about 13 subscription packs.
The only fully functioning features for the purchasing price are the doors, for safety reasons, you don't need to pay extra to use those.
One thing I like about most BMWs is I can take a look at just about any model of any year and know it’s BMW without even knowing which one. I’d never guess this one.
