Ouch. Yeah usa's BEV sales are basically dead for the next couple of years.
Bev sales -27%
Tesla -8% over a quater where the factories were closed.
Wouldn't be surprised if tesla falls to 3rd place in the global BEV sales this year because of it. Depending on wether china makes a recovery or not. Things are looking rough there.
Global top 3 2026?
farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr@reddit
Tesla outsold BYD this quarter globally
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
When do you think byd will regain the lead? April, May or june?
Holiday-Hippo-6748@reddit
Lmfao, doing the heavy lifting đ
Torczyner@reddit
Tesla YoY was up though with model Y best selling car in the world again.
markeydarkey2@reddit
You gotta stop believing everything that comes out of Elon's mouth, the RAV4 outsold it last year.
jorsiem@reddit
By 2k units on a 1.8million basis. Technically true but the fact that the MY is a pure EV only is pretty damn impressive. RAV4 figure are all variants combined.
ScipioAfricanvs@reddit
...which makes it not the best selling car in the world.
jorsiem@reddit
Yes? That's what I said
ScipioAfricanvs@reddit
No, you're trying to qualify and defend by minimalizing the gap and saying it's "technically" true.
Straight up, Elon lied. Nothing to minimalize and nothing to defend.
jorsiem@reddit
In my comment I no Tony said you were right just pointed out that having a pure EV that doesn't have a worldwide dealer network and selling less than 1% less than a car that's sold all over the world and has like 5 versions is a feat on its own.
But you have some weird Tesla derangement that prevents you from recognizing that it seems like.
WiserPeople@reddit
Lol - "technically true".
"Yes, technically a bigger number is greater than a smaller number but but but....."
Torczyner@reddit
Those numbers are wrong. Even Yahoo says so Tesla Model Y Emerges As World's Best-Selling Car For Third Year Despite Sales Decline https://share.google/goDMtCo0h15YOoOid
The fact you're even trying to dispute this shows your bias.
Educational_Fox6899@reddit
lol. Your proof is an article quoting tesla. rotfl. Just google it. There are tons of sources that aren't just quoting the manufacturer like this one.
https://www.kbb.com/car-news/report-toyota-rav4-takes-worlds-best-selling-car-title/
weaponR@reddit
You're getting downvoted because Reddit hates facts that don't agree with their bias.
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
The -8% means they were down 8% us Q1 2026 vs us Q1 2025.
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
A lot of American use case is very challenging for BEV, projecting accelerating penetration was extremely naive. But no one could be reasoned with five years ago, they'd just hand wave away the numbers. For wealthy suburban and rural Americans buying new trucks towing and range are real concerns and they also have some of the harshest winters. For lower income people they often don't own a home or garage where they can charge their car.
Puzzled_Region_9376@reddit
Absolutely fascinating stereotype you have in your head th average ev owner has a âbig house where it gets charged every nightâ and would buy it only âas a fun third carâ. Kinda weird stereotype that isnât true imo
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Over 90% of American EV buyers already own multiple gas cars. Itâs a stereotype thatâs supported by the data, in other words, itâs true.
weaponR@reddit
Cite your sources.
Puzzled_Region_9376@reddit
Whatâs your source on that out of curiosity? Assuming itâs a solid source, just because the average ev owner has multiple cars does not necessarily prove that theyâre as wealthy as you think they are or that itâs the fun car.
Average new car buyer is getting older. So old thereâs probably a third car floating around for the kid and if they do have three plus the ev is probably the daily beater and the truck/sports car is the more fun luxury purchase
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
I don't really buy that at all tbh. It's the price that's changed not the Americans. This just shows that they're too expensive.
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
They sold well into the niches that worked for them (rich peopleâs third car that gets parked in the garage of their big house with an EV charger each night). Now they tried and failed to expand into other niches like âpickup truckâ which they canât do because of towing. The other area thatâs curious is low income people. Well first they donât usually buy brand new cars that often in the first place, and secondly home charging access is going to be variable. Some apartments have it but most donât still. If you canât charge at home the value proposition fails as itâs more expensive than gasoline per mile.
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
You think rich people were running out to buy a Honda Prologue as a 3rd car? That's an interesting view point.
AndroidUser37@reddit
My family's upper middle class, and our EV ownership only works because we can afford to have a spare Suburban for road trips and other situations where we need an ICE car. It also only works because we live in a detached single family home with a garage and in home charging. So yeah, upper middle class (which some may call "rich").
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Average EV buying household owns 2.7 cars and over 90% of them own gas cars in their fleet.
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
That's a meanless stat. How many adults in the house hold? 2? 3? 4?
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Not very many people bought Prologues actually so maybe theyâre a bad example for you. Letâs look at top volume cars.
Torczyner@reddit
This is just anecdotes though. Would love to see actual data. For example our model Y is our 3 row vehicle and my ice car is a Porsche I drive on the weekends for fun. The EVs carry the daily tasks.
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Go look up the data, it will be enlightening. Average EV household owns 2.7 cars and over 90% of them include pure ICE.
ApprehensiveSize7662@reddit
Correct me if I'm wrong but they were the 4th best selling BEV in the USA in 2025?
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
What was their volume compared to the other big sellers? That seems surprising to me, I didnât think they were doing that well.
weaponR@reddit
People are not buying an EV as their third toy car.
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
What do you imagine the profile of say a 2016 Model S buyer was? Whatâs their average age and income? Do you imagine they own a SFH with private garage?
Puzzled_Region_9376@reddit
I can answer as one. Youâre way off base
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
What was your age and income? Iâm not sure I get your point.
Puzzled_Region_9376@reddit
Lower than you seem to think on both counts. My point is not every ev owner is Mr Richy rich and if they are the ev was not the third car they got for fun. Far more likely the truck is tbh or a sports car
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Your point is that among the dataset which is clearly very wealthy multiple vehicle owners, just as I claimed, that in fact there are some people with fewer and some with more?
Yes my friend thatâs called a distribution it doesnât disprove the average figures it is normal.
Torczyner@reddit
You but the model S for a daily. I've owned 5 of them. You buy a toy ice car for racing or off-road etc.
weaponR@reddit
Who cares about a 2016 model s buyer? That car isn't their volume seller, is ten years old, and is discontinued.
The demographic for a model 3 or model Y is of someone buying it as their primary, potentially only, car.
Source: me.
Proper_Speaker9662@reddit
Want to post some data?
Threedawg@reddit
So, less than half of the sales of ford lightnings last year
q0vneob@reddit
I know this isnt the point if your comment but it makes me wonder if anyone is really cross-shopping the two.
mattSER@reddit
Doubtful. I purchased a Lightning specifically to use as a daily work truck, and the Cybertruck didn't even cross my mind. It just feels more like a family hauler to me, even tho I'm sure the capabilities are much the same.
RequirementLeading12@reddit
How does the lightning hold up as a work truck?
mattSER@reddit
It's incredible! I haul a 5x8 trailer every day. My work area is pretty small, so range doesn't matter, but it pulls the trailer like it weighs nothing and most of my equipment is battery electric which i can charge in the frunk while working.
It's also nice to hop into a chilled truck after each job on a hot day because I can leave the climate running all the time.
It's literally perfect.
q0vneob@reddit
I always thought EV would make a great option for a landscaper setup. You can get battery versions of every tool, even zero-turn mowers, keep it all charged up in your truck/trailer, limited service area so range isnt a big deal, and have it all 100% overnight without ever hitting a gas station. Plus your shit is quiet, which might be a big selling point for a lot of customers.
cat_prophecy@reddit
So they even make battery electric commerical equipment? I wonder what the ROI on that is.
mattSER@reddit
I use the top level Ego stuff, which is more like "prosumer" level, but so far, they've handily out lasted my previous Honda commercial stuff simply due to inherent electric benefits like zero maintenance. Some of my older batteries are going on 9 years old and still do the job.
q0vneob@reddit
Gravely and ExMark do, probably more. Idk how they compare to the gas stuff tbh. I'm just a guy in a house listening to lawn crews turn gas into noise all summer lol, seems like silence could be a good selling point over the competition.
mellofello808@reddit
I want a lightning, because you can actually use the bed, unlike the CT. I really need to get around to buying one while clean examples are available.
Hell of a lot of truck for the prices they are selling for these days.
Ford stepped on a rake discontinuing them now that gas is going to be $5 a gallon for the forseeable future.
Drzhivago138@reddit
FWIW the model will be returning as an EREV.
yhsong1116@reddit
Lightning sold for what it did and lost so much money it had to be discontinued lol
q0vneob@reddit
Yeah that was my thought. Like you buy the Cybertruck cause you specifically want a Cybertruck - its kind of its own thing. But if I was looking for an EV pickup I don't see it making my list either.
mellofello808@reddit
If they made a CT SUV, I may actually be tempted. It wouldn't look bad if the roof continued straight back, instead of being a triangle.
soundshinedj@reddit
I kind of did last year, but Fordâs 0% financing and the Cybertruckâs looks pushed me toward the Lightning. Since then, Ford discontinued the Lightning, and the CT has grown on me like a fungus. Knowing what I know now, Iâd probably go CT over a Rivian because of the rear wheel steering. I think also when I was shopping Tesla was offering lifetime free supercharging. But damn itâs ugly.
farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr@reddit
Cybertruck is considerably better yep
weaponR@reddit
At least the CT is still on sale. Ford made a mistake discontinuing it IMO.
cat_prophecy@reddit
They were losing money in every sale.
psaux_grep@reddit
Sounds like they did other mistakes thenâŚ
SpaceghostLos@reddit
Why would anyone buy those POS cyber dump trucks. The Lightning, hell, the over-priced GM ones are such better deals.
weaponR@reddit
The Lightning is discontinued, and the GM ones are $$$ as you said yourself?
SpaceghostLos@reddit
I hate my logic sometimes.
RazingsIsNotHomeNow@reddit
The GM ones are right in line with the Cybertruck's pricing?
trackdaybruh@reddit
I'm willing to bet majority of the sales were in California, specifically southern California because they are a dime in a dozen here.
AntalRyder@reddit
Plenty in the Chicago suburbs, too.
farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr@reddit
Ford lost money on each of those sales
Holiday-Hippo-6748@reddit
Hey at least youâre admitting it sold less than the Cybertruck lol
hi_im_bored13@reddit
I can't really be mad at the BZ they've turned it into a decent product, & even when it wasn't they discount it sooo low to for tax & carbon credits who cared at the performance
verymickey@reddit
BZ ?
psaux_grep@reddit

SpyDiego@reddit
Even bizz is too long now
hi_im_bored13@reddit
Toyota BZ which is 3rd behind the Model 3 & Y pair
I mean, behind by a pretty significant margin, it's still very much Tesla & everyone else, but beating the Ioniq & Equinox is impressive
GOA_AMD65@reddit
That should be quite a bit higher if they actually fulfill their large amount of orders for the $60,000 version.
farrrtttttrrrrrrrrtr@reddit
Cybertruck is the best selling EV truck, itâs weird how Reddit pretends it isnât selling lol

You register an LLC and section 179 scam a truck purchase since only trucks qualify
jabroni4545@reddit
Aren't suvs included? Seen them based on vehicle gvrw.
Drzhivago138@reddit
Any vehicle over 6K GVWR can qualify for Sec. 179, which includes all full-size pickups and SUVs, some minivans, and some mid-size pickups and SUVs. However, if it doesn't have a bed at least 6' long, your deduction is capped at $32K rather than the full value of the vehicle. It's not exactly a "scam" either.
Euryheli@reddit
The US federal credit was stopped, many states still have tax credits for EVs, and worldwide they are very common.
weaponR@reddit
The article is about the US specifically. So are you saying special tax breaks in a handful of states is the cause of Cybertruck's sales numbers?
Euryheli@reddit
I didnât say anything about anything effecting Cybertruck sales. I said that many states still have EV rebates.
GoldenState15@reddit

band-of-horses@reddit
I remember in the first few quarters when they were selling all they could produce to reservation holders and the die hard fans were swearing these would be selling 500,000 per year and outselling the F-150. Now here we are celebrating a whopping 60,000 a year in sales. Wow.

What is the cybertruck if not the thing that looks like a dumpster? You have a concept of a non-dumpster cybertruck in your mind? Whatever that is, it's not a cybertruck.
ambeingheldhostage@reddit
I suppose so. I guess im just looking for a conventially designed pickup truck built by tesla.
LardLad00@reddit
Don't worry, Elon said if the Cybertruck doesn't sell, they'll just make a normal truck. I'm sure it's right around the corner.

Good opportunity for Rivian to drop an extended cab truck version of the upcoming R2

People are not buying cybertrucks to use as trucks
They're edgelords pledging fealty thinking they look badass
weaponR@reddit
Reddit loves to out people into buckets to fit their personal (often political) narratives.
I don't own a cybertruck and don't like the look, but I admit the one I test drove was very nice to drive. Is it so hard to accept some people might simply want that in an EV with added extra utility?
Dirty_Pee_Pants@reddit
The utility of a cybertruck is questionably better than a minivan. It's use as a truck has been tested repeatedly to basically confirm that is useless as an actual truck for work purposes. Look up jerryrigeverything's videos on them.
That being said, with those drawbacks, why would anyone spend the asking price on an over hyped, poorly efficient, EV minivan?
jabroni4545@reddit
Seen people use them as work trucks, only major con with any ev truck is the towing range.
weaponR@reddit
...I mean I literally just gave one reason from my own test drive: it was objectively very nice to drive. The unique steer by wire system was also great.
Dirty_Pee_Pants@reddit
That same exact experience can be had elsewhere, for cheaper. It's a product looking for a market segment that has already been addressed, by better manufacturers.
I gave you two examples of that, but I'm not the throw your money away police so whatever.
weaponR@reddit
I don't see any specific examples you gave of EV trucks or minivans with steer by wire. You mentioned something vague about it's questionable utility.
Name specific EV models that have addressed it better please.
Dirty_Pee_Pants@reddit
What is your obsession with steer by wire? Personally, I hate it. It feels like shit and gives zero natural road feedback.
That being said, I'm not going to argue with your dumbass on the Internet. Fucking Google shit like a normal god damn person.
But here, enjoy, instead of having ridiculous arguments with Internet strangers. Reading things and teaching yourself is probably a better use of your time than trusting whatever Elon thinks is best for you.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Steer-by-wire?wprov=sfla1
weaponR@reddit
Yikes. I'm not obsessed, I just said their steer-by-wire was unique and worked well in my experience. I don't even like Elon and never said I did. I was purely talking about the CT and why it might be popular despite him.
And why would I need to Google anything to back up YOUR own assertions for you? That's your job, but instead you got irritated very quickly and resorted to name-calling.
I'd say this wasn't even an argument here, let alone a "ridiculous" one. It was just you having an immediate tantrum, but maybe that's on brand for Dirty_Pee_Pants.
Dirty_Pee_Pants@reddit
Maybe it is friend. I was simply pointing out that a Cybertruck is an objectively bad purchase and you chose to go down the counterpoint path.
While I can acknowledge that I could have approached things much better, it's just getting tiring dealing with the Tesla fan crowd who all too often has a tendency to bring up irrelevant counter points, similarly to how I perceived you doing.
With that said, I'll elaborate. Steer by wire in an 8000lb people smasher is a horrible idea. I'll reiterate that when operating equipment, which a truck absolutely is, you really need a feel for what the machine is doing in physical space. You lose all of that with steer by wire. If steer by wire is a killer feature for you, then stick to whatever passenger vehicle offers it in the style that you prefer.
This is all ignoring the fact that there is an entire laundry list of problems with Tesla manufactured vehicles in general, that could have an entire article written about it. I'll provide another. The Cybertruck specifically, due to it's styling and construction process, has stainless steel panels adhered to the body with nothing more than adhesive. Imagine what that does to a person when a flying chunk of flat stainless steel impacts a body at 70 mph. It's not hard to imagine because that's literally a shock scene in the first final destination movie with accurate results.
Furthermore, the Cybertruck's frame is also a cast aluminum part. Cast aluminum is a horrible choice for this as it is brittle and prone to stress cracking. Something you absolutely don't want in equipment that can tow or haul things. Compare this with the F150 Lightning, which has a boxed aluminum frame that's been in service for nearly decades at this point.
tl;dr, the Cybertruck is still a product attempting to do too many things looking for a market segment that has already been filled by objectively better options.
My apologies for the quick temper. It has been a long decade.
GoldenState15@reddit
They're horrible to drive and they're built terribly lmao. What are you on about?
tech01x@reddit
Ah, you clearly are delusional. Independent reviewers rave about how well it drives.
And any new vehicle with tons of new tech and build processes will take some time to dial in. They are pretty good these days, so you appear to just be parroting sensationalist headlines rather than deal with reality.
GoldenState15@reddit
I'm not delusional lol, I've driven thousands of different cars due to work and they are awful in essentially every aspect. Build quality has nothing to do with tech. Independent reviewers were obligated to suck off Tesla because they got early access to the car. There are just as many reviewers that didn't get early access to it that hate it
tech01x@reddit
More evidence you know nothing. Very few independent reviewers got access to a factory supplied CT. Tesla dwisnt do much of that at all.
Again, you clearly donât have actual experience with the vehicle.
GoldenState15@reddit
You just proved my point lmao. The people that DID get ones shipped from Tesla were extremely positive while everyone else was actually honest
tech01x@reddit
No, lots of folks with positive comments just rented a CT on Turo or borrowed them.
Again, you speak from ignorance.
GoldenState15@reddit

tech01x@reddit

tech01x@reddit

GoldenState15@reddit
Nothing you've said would suggest you have the slightest idea of what you're talking about
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Got any to share? You can hate it as much as you like, but it's going to be objectively good to drive for a truck because it's a unibody with fully independent air suspension. It can't not be better in that regard.

Zealousideal_Bad3310@reddit
There's zero reason to spend an additional 40k over a comparable Lightning. Unless you're trying to make a statement.
I've only met two people who own CTs, they're both tech nerds who would slurp up whatever Elon dribbled onto a gas station bathroom floor. The other two people I know who see Musk as some sort of deity would love to buy a CT if they could afford it.
Maybe I'm generalizing, but at a certain point a pattern is a pattern.
weaponR@reddit
The Lightning has been discontinued. That alone would keep me from any still left on lots.
Finessence@reddit
Do you think the majority of the cybertrucks youâve seen over the last couple years were sold in the 3 months since the production ended for the lightning? Or do you think that most cybertrucks youâve seen are a statement?
jabroni4545@reddit
What political statement are trying to make driving a gr86?
jabroni4545@reddit
Styling, horsepower, air suspension/offroad capability, supercharger network, fsd, better ui, rear wheel steering, no traditional dealer hassle, dent resistant body panels, motorized bed enclosure, sub bed trunk.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Unless you found a dealer taking $30k off the hood of a Lightning, that's not a choice anyone is making. The Lightning wasn't cheap.
Zealousideal_Bad3310@reddit
They're cheaper than a gas XLT where i live now, but yeah when they were first released they were way overpriced.
Ancient_Persimmon@reddit
Yeah, I think the saving grace for the CT and all other electric trucks is the price creep on the gas side.
The people who jumped on the $60k Dual Motor offering this year got a pretty ridiculous deal.
TA-MajestyPalm@reddit
I think Cybertrucks look are ugly and stupid
But if you seriously think most people buying them are doing it to "pledge fealty" you need to spend less time online
AmNoSuperSand52@reddit

Why? They already make the Cybertruck. First deliveries of the lower cost trim is expected in June. Why would they not be able to make it?
LheelaSP@reddit
Have they not promised a cheap version if the Cybertruck for years? I tend to be sceptical when a product is years behind schedule and the company promising it also has a decent history of not delivering on their promises.
