What takeaways do you flat out refuse to buy now and do your best to replicate at home?

Posted by deezwurdsRmyown@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 174 comments

beeurd@reddit

I don't like fish all that much so when I do have it it has to be from a chippie or it's just underwhelming to the point of not being enjoyable for me. My local chippie does a special with minifish and chips, sausage, and curry sauce for like £7.50. Fills me up better than spending the same amount at any of the fast food giants. I'd have stopped buying Indian takeaways if I didn't have an amazing Indian at the bottom of my street. A good, reasonably priced Chinese seems hard to find these days so we rarely order in.

This happened to me a couple of years ago, although it looked much less dramatic. Call your ISP and they'll be able to send a replacement router and arrange for Openreach (or whoever it is these days) to replace the master socket.

Has anyone else noticed animals and birds not getting out of the way of cars like they used to?

Posted by KittyGrewAMoustache@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 58 comments

beeurd@reddit

I've found the opposite to be fair. Used to hit squirrels and birds all the time - not on purpose, they would just run/fly in front of the car without warning. I assumed wildlife mental health had improved.

Do you think houses will be built/renovated to have air conditioning if this heat continues?

Posted by idreaminlowercase@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 258 comments

beeurd@reddit

Same, my current home was built in 1877, and a previous home was built in 1801, both are/were like ovens in hot weather and almost impossible to cool down. In our current place the rear of the property faces north and normally the rooms that side are considerably cooler... except in the current weather that doesn't actually mean much and it's still sweltering.

Depending on how old the properties are, it could just be filling in a gap where new windows were installed that weren't the same size as the old ones.

I lost my job - how the f do people survive on benefits?!

My husband has been off work sick for over a year, and hasn't been able to claim any benefits because of how much I earn. My wages just about cover all the bills/expenses but leave us with basically nothing. Thankfully we have very cheap rent and a family member who has been able to pay towards getting my car through it's MOT otherwise we'd be completely screwed.

Cat owners in flats — do you ever feel guilty they never go outside?

My flat has a cat flap and a private garden, but I still can't find anywhere that will let me adopt a cat from them. Any tips on finding good private sellers? Every one I find looks like a scam.

Can you drive stick? (Inspired by that other post)

Posted by jesusmansuperpowers@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 343 comments

beeurd@reddit

Yes, but I'm in the UK where something like 70% of cars are manual transmission. I've never driven an automatic. Most brand new cars sold here these days are actually automatic, but the majority of drivers still learn manual because if you pass a driving test in an automatic car then your licence doesn't cover manuals, but learning manual does cover auromatics.

Parents of young kids - do any of you not stay with your child until they fall asleep?

I don't have kids but that sounds crazy to me. It takes me literally an hour or more to fall asleep, and always has done even when I was a kid. 😅

Yes, but I went to school in the 90s. We had a mix of whiteboards and blackboards at high school, some of the blackboards were actually green though.

UK here so the popular names were probably slightly different. I'm an Andrew, and Andrew was by far the most popular name in my year at school. Other popular boys names that I can think of were James/Jamie, David, Shaun, Matthew. Popular girls names were things like Laura, Clare/Claire, Sarah, Gemma. I have a "year you were born" book somewhere that has the official top 10s in. Might try and find it.

What 2nd language did you learn in school?

I was at school in the 90s, so I'm sure it's changed since then. My schools taught French from year 6, but at high school in year 9 there was the option to start German too... but for some reason this was only available if you were good at French. 🤷‍♂️

Was it actually a thing in Britain “back in the day” for people to have all their teeth removed and get dentures relatively young, even when they still had some healthy teeth or is that one of those exaggerated stories?

Posted by Top_Mirror211@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 746 comments

Now you mention it, I remember my grandparents having dentures when I was a kid - must have been in their 50s or 60s at the time. My parents are around 70 now and don't have dentures.

When did you learn 'joined up' writing and do you still use it?

Posted by SketchupandFries@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 353 comments

beeurd@reddit

Was taught joined up writing in year 4 in like 1991/2. Once you've learnt it though schools don't typically enforce a particular style, as long as it's neat and legible. My handwriting was always (and still is) awful, so I was forever getting in trouble and having to rewrite things. My biggest problem with handwriting now is actually reading what I've written. 😅

It's a US/UK variation AFAIK. It's never been consistently called cursive in the UK from what I can tell; the traditional style here was often "round hand" but there are regional variations, unlike how cursive in the US seems to be a specific standardised style.

Tin can crushers, are there any that will actually work as expected?

Posted by Gloomy_Pastry@reddit | AskUK | View on Reddit | 24 comments

Maybe it is. I remember we had a can crusher in high school, but that was before there were local recycling collections. When they first sent around the recycling boxes/bins we were told not to crush cans or bottles.

I thought we weren't supposed to crush them any more because it stops the automatic systems at recycling centres from being able to identify them properly.

It's weird seeing people I perceive as much older than me and finding out they're younger than me.

I remember after I was made redundant in the recession around 2011ish, and one week I was in the job centre telling them I hadn't applied for any jobs that week because I couldn't find any suitable. I got a right snotty reply from the advisor for "not doing enough", then she spent 5 minutes looking on the computer for me before coming back and admitting there weren't any suitable jobs for me to apply for. 🫠

Why wasn't the Dino-Riders line a bigger success? It was also never revived over the decades, not even once.
