Do people always wear their watch on their non-dominant hand (wrist)?
redrighthand_@reddit
Left handed and wear it on my right
topcottager@reddit
Right handed on my left.
cardinalb@reddit
Ambidextrous and wear one watch on each wrist.
Only_Tip9560@reddit
Surely you should wear your watch in your ankle?
cardinalb@reddit
I'm not a savage.
Sad-Insurance1313@reddit
Same. But 2 on each wrist
cardinalb@reddit
You can never be too careful with the quality of timepieces being what it is nowadays.
Sad-Insurance1313@reddit
Indeed....but one must also watch their spending
redrighthand_@reddit
4x6x8@reddit
Ambidextrous, wear it in my knob. Awkward when people ask me the time though.
jackgrafter@reddit
IN your knob?
Grand_Equipment5292@reddit
Yeah, trying to be funny is great, but you have to get your spelling right...
Broonmoose@reddit
Jumped in too quickly… wasn’t the time to go off half-cocked.
No_Economy6175@reddit
With a name like yours one might expect a watch or something similar embedded
fairysdad@reddit
Sounds like they made a mistake.
holytriplem@reddit
Common folk remedy for premature ejaculation
Toon1982@reddit
I didn't realise you could get watches that small
bowen7477@reddit
Got the time in ya, cock?
Niche_Enjoyer@reddit
This is the way.
ComprehensiveAir2656@reddit
That workput question between GMT and BST sounds rough. Especially when it's your mum asking.
tcpukl@reddit
Left handed and it's on my dominant.
It made winding up the clock easier. It seemed made for lefties.
YorkshireMary@reddit
Same
Morty_Wh@reddit
Same, people comment on it more often than i thoughr
Far-Adhesiveness3763@reddit
Left handed ony left
TwentyOneClimates@reddit
Gym bros love it. They buy it so the stores will keep selling it. You see how long that Dubai chocolate trend lasted? Very few people wanted to spend the ridiculous amount of chocolate so it died a death within 6 months.
RoutineCloud5993@reddit
It got in the way while writing, do I got into the habit of being on my non dominant.
EmergencyEntrance28@reddit
I always assumed this was the reason it goes on your non-dominant hand.
Novel-Case6821@reddit
I feel like that might affect right handed folk more than left, if we write left to right? I'm left handed and wear on left, it's not a problem.
This post about right and left was surprisingly hard to write. I should've just left it.
ResponsibleBend2195@reddit
Left on the left
julianjc23@reddit
I like to mix it up. Right or left. When I need to know the time , I pick my phone.
smellyfeet25@reddit
I wear it on my left wrist and i am right handed. I don't know what left handed people do.I should as my mum is left handed
weatherillj09@reddit
Always non dominant. Then I can check it while for instance changing gears while riding or while writing. And makes it a ton easier to put on and take off.
Fish_Minger@reddit
Left handed, and used to wear a watch on my left hand when I was younge, but now wear it on my right.
The reasons being:
mazzles85@reddit
I used to wear my watch with the face on the inside of my wrist when I was younger and at work. Now I have a smart watch, but I’ve always worn it on my dominant hand and never had an issue putting it on/off.
Active_Definition_57@reddit
My late father always wore watches on the inside of his wrist.
daniel_guillon@reddit
I am right handed and wear my watch on my right wrist.
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
No they don't.
Traditionally men wear it on their left. It prevents the watch getting scratches and knocks from your dominant hand at work.
Initial_Total_7028@reddit
It specifically became standard in WWI. (Most) Guns aren't ambidextrous, everyone shoots 'right handed', and you don't want your watch getting caught around the trigger or guard when you're fighting.
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
Hmm not so sure about that one. Men have been wearing it on the left for much longer than that.
Initial_Total_7028@reddit
Most men didn't wear wristwatches until WWI, and those that did were mostly military officers who would have encountered the same issue. Before WWI civilians were much more likely to own pocket watches instead.
fourlegsfaster@reddit
But women who work don't mind scratching and knocking their watches.
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
Women have nothing to do with the point I made.
Chrolan1988@reddit
Do they not now?
Darkgreenbirdofprey@reddit
No.
I have no idea what the traditions for women are. But I'm pretty sure that men wear it on the left because they don't want it damaged.
No_Economy6175@reddit
So you can wind it up (historically). Prevents damage as you don’t use non dom hand as often
elhazelenby@reddit
I see it as it's easier to look at my left hand for looking at things with my hand such as using my phone as well. Also reading left to right. Also it was just how I was taught.
I'm predominantly right handed as I write with my right hand but I do some things naturally only with my left or a few things with both.
CrossCityLine@reddit
Tbf, if you’re wearing an automatic or hand wound watch you should take it off your wrist to wind it anyway.
scuderia91@reddit
What difference does it make?
CrossCityLine@reddit
You stand a higher chance of bending or breaking the crown stem if it’s on your wrist rather than off it.
scuderia91@reddit
I feel like you’d have to be being pretty aggressive to do that. Especially one ones where you don’t have to pull the crown to wind it as it’s still fully supported
CrossCityLine@reddit
Indeed you do, but there are a lot of ham fisted people out there.
It’s not worth the risk, especially if you’re wearing anything nicer than a basic Seiko 5 Automatic.
RichardsonM24@reddit
Doesn’t an automatic wind due to movement whilst it’s on your wrist? Isn’t that the point?
No_Economy6175@reddit
Yeah see above comment 🙏
CrossCityLine@reddit
It does, but to get it started if it’s been off your wrist for a couple of days you can manually wind them too.
Also, you may want to adjust the time rather than winding it. Also some people just like to play with the crown.
None of that should be done with the watch on your wrist.
No_Economy6175@reddit
Yeah it’s the historical reason that watches are worn on non dominant hand. My watch is perpetual motion and doesn’t need winding but still wear on my left wrist or the crown would be digging into the flesh of my arm. I hope that makes sense!
Swotboy2000@reddit
Sub hand
No_Economy6175@reddit
I suppose 😂😂
daveysprockett@reddit
Only works for right handers, as the winding bezel is on the right on most watches.
As a lefty I have to remove my watch to adjust anything.
LichenTheMood@reddit
I have found for me that when wearing a watch ony left wrist sometimes it knocks against my the top of my hand in such a way that turns it.
Idk if this is a hypermobility thing or if it's a broader problem but I never hear anyone else mention it.
On older watches where it could adjust the time I would randomly find my watch set to the wrong time, on my smart watch it will turn up audiobooks or music.
seven-cents@reddit
Could wear it with the bezel on left and read the time upside down
No_Economy6175@reddit
Tbf I remove my watch to do anything with it too! I don’t wear mine all the time cos I work from home now so seems a bit overkill 🤣
elhazelenby@reddit
Nope, I've met a few people who wear it on their dominant hand.
OldManAndTheSea93@reddit
I switch it up
chuckiestealady@reddit
Left-hander here who used to wear it on my dominant wrist as I knew no better. I ended up desperately trying to find the flattest and smallest watches I could so they wouldn’t impinge when writing but nothing was ever good enough. I tried switching to me right hand but it somehow always got damaged there.
Now I go without.
Ganache_53@reddit
i’ve always worn watch on my right wrist although i’m right handed.
JavaRuby2000@reddit
Left arm usually but, right arm when I'm diving.
buginarugsnug@reddit
I do because it gets in the way (annoys me) when I'm writing and at work I do write by hand quite often.
WarmJewel@reddit
I do. I'm left handed, I wear my watch on the right hand. I don't think there is any right or wrong wrist to wear your watch on, it's whatever feels most natural and comfortable for you.
The only annoying thing about wearing it on the right hand is that I have to take it off to change the time as the winder is on the wrong side! Ahh the trials and tribulations of being left handed in a right handed world.
cutluv@reddit
No, but I used to. I'm right-handed, broke my left arm as a teenager, so had to wear my watch on the other wrist; nearly fifty years later I've yet to switch back,
AirlineSevere7456@reddit
I don't wear a watch and haven't for years, hate having wrist hair trapped.
im_the_joker@reddit
Right handed and have always worn it on my right, I also eat with the fork in my right and knife in the left.
Mysterious_County154@reddit
probably
MaxPower2212@reddit
Left handed, wear on my left
Dru2021@reddit
I wear my Fitbit or watch on my right hand. It’s always fun to find out how many meters I wan… never mind
Adam-West@reddit
Fitness watches tell you to wear it none dominant. I think because tasks can be misinterpreted as extra steps for your step count
DeltaMikeXray@reddit
I just arbitrarily switch when I'm fed up of it one one or the other hand. Didn't wear watches for the first 35years of my life so it feels weird but I like having one now.
GabberZZ@reddit
Leftie here. Wear it on my left wrist.
Ands1977@reddit
Right handed here. Wear my watch on my left. I also type with my left hand, tap a calculator with my left hand fingers and I hold a packet of crisps with my right hand and eat with my left. I have tried to swap to use my dominant right hand but it feels weird and totally wrong for me.
Bowtie327@reddit
You’re “supposed” to wear it on your non-dominant hand, which is “supposed” to be the left hand, reason being is it’s less likley to get scratched on your non-dominant
However I’m mostly a leftie and wear mine on my left just because I always have
Sufficient-Star-1237@reddit
I wear It on my non dominant hand. I guess this exists as a custom because you use your dominant hand more often and if you needed to look at the time or wanted to time something, it would be more difficult if the hand wearing the watch were occupied in the task at hand (so to speak)
Relevant_Swimming511@reddit
I wear it on my dominant hand(Right) I just had it there since a kid and the non dominant just feels wrong
hampets@reddit
Same. I do everything with my dominant hand, why not wear my watch on it?
craftyorca135@reddit
Same
dantes_b1tch@reddit
Same. Weirdly I can't actually put it on my left even tho am right handed.
Cosmic-burst@reddit
Right handed, I wear it on my right wrist face up. I can’t stand having the watch face on the inside of my wrist.
sarahc13289@reddit
Same. It never occurred to me to wear it on the non dominant hand, wearing it on the dominant hand just felt right and a more natural movement to turn my wrist to look at it (though before smart watches I always wore the face on the inside of my wrist).
It was only pointed out to me a couple of years ago that the non dominant hand was the norm.
AltruisticCourt9035@reddit
Same here. Just always worn it like that. Natural for me.
london_smog_latte@reddit
Ditto
cmrndzpm@reddit
Same. I’m right handed but both my parents were left, so aside from writing I pretty much do everything the left handed way anyway.
TheRealElPolloDiablo@reddit
Yeah, same for me. Have always worn it on my right side, just feels wrong not to
I_AM_Squirrel_King@reddit
Sames. Right handed. Wear my watch on my right. Feels weird and awkward on my left.
hampets@reddit
Same. I do everything with my dominant hand, why not wear my watch on it?
raulmonkey@reddit
Wear on my left ,drink on my left, smoked on my left, right handed.
r_keel_esq@reddit
I know two people who wear theirs on their left hand - One is a southpaw - One plays the accordion, so has his left wrist under a strap that would interfere with the watch
hyper-casual@reddit
No, I wear mine on my dominant hand (left).
Started because I've always used a keyboard and mouse in the standard setup (mouse in the right hand) and the clanking of the watch clasp on the table annoyed me.
Tarjhan@reddit
I do. It’s usually a lot easier to shift whatever I’m carrying to my dominant hand to check time.
walesbondagelover@reddit
Wear mine on my dominant right wrist. Turns out my dad did as well.
somekindofcatgirl@reddit
My mum is left handed so even though I am right handed I always wear my watch on my right.
SM_83@reddit
I used to have it on my right wrist (right handed) when I was younger, but then someone asked me the time whilst I was holding a can of coke in my right hand. You can guess the rest.
I've had my watch on my left wrist ever since.
-mmmusic-@reddit
because i started wearing it as a kid, when i wrote a lot, and writing with your watch constantly bumping the table is irritating.
MonsieurJag@reddit
Left handed, wear it on my left. I write or use scissors left handed but would play cricket right handed.
Cyanidepond@reddit
Same same, but getting too old for the cricket.
Cyanidepond@reddit
Left handed and wear it on the left, however I usually wear bullhead watches that are adjustable from the top when worn on either hand.
IguanaDog@reddit
Not at the moment because I have a new, incredibly beautiful tattoo on my left forearm/wrist and my Apple Watch ruins the aesthetic 🤦🏼♀️
SgtTaco18@reddit
Wear it on my left and am left handed. Although I do compensate for it by buying stainless steel and scratch resistant faces.
PureKushroom@reddit
Mines on my non-dominant with the face facing outward. When I worked in the NHS I wore it on the same arm but with the face facing inward for practical reasons.
bentleybasher@reddit
I do now that I use Apple Watch as it’s controlled just looked at, also being the less used limb I’m less likely to damage it hitting something, that applies for any watch.
ohiomudslide@reddit
Left side but right handed due to overzealous school teacher not letting me write left handed. (F you miss Carlisle, you suck!)
jayniepuff@reddit
The practise began when people used to actually write with their dominant hand, so they could glance at their watch and keep writing. It also reduces scratches on the lens of a good-quality watch.
Pircster38@reddit
Left wrist. Watches are - rightly or wrongly - made to be worn on the left wrist, as the crown faces towards your hand and therefore easy for adjustment etc.
Isotope_Soap@reddit
Way back when we actually wound watches, it was meant to be worn on the left as to be able to wind it with your right index and thumb.
frankbowles1962@reddit
No I wear it on my left and I am left-handed
SeasonReasonable4282@reddit
I've always worn it on my left wrist, non dominant side. Have done since my first watch when I was about 8.
chef-chouette@reddit
Yeah so you can get ind it with your dominant.
Toon1982@reddit
No I wear it on my dominant (right) wrist. I also use my fork in my right hand and knife in my left too
alarming_wrong@reddit
it's to prevent your smart watch from tracking your dominant hand's activity. whatever that might be
Raisinsandfairywings@reddit
I’m left-handed and have always worn watches on my right. Although I woke up one morning to my watch-face completely smashed and realised I must have flailed my arm out in my sleep and bashed it against the bedside table or bed.
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
You wear your watch in bed?
turtleship_2006@reddit
Loads of p[eople (like me) wear smart ones for sleep tracking
Rich-Peak-3902@reddit
Of course. I always forget about smart watches when thinking of watches.
Raisinsandfairywings@reddit
I always used to. I don’t anymore because I no longer have a watch since I smashed it in my sleep.
PartTimeLegend@reddit
Right handed and I wear my watch on my left ankle.
ElephantWeary9137@reddit
For the first 25 years of my life right handed wore on right.
Always worn metal straps and got fed up of breaking skin and breaking straps and generally smashing watches up.
Since then on left, cheaper and less painful!
RaggamuffinTW8@reddit
I wear mine on my dominant wrist.
I have a tattoo sleeve on my left arm and it means my watch can't get my heart rate when I wear it on that arm.
AnnoyedHaddock@reddit
I never knew this was a thing, guess that’s why my watch was telling me my heart rate was fucked. Stopped wearing it cos I thought it was broken.
RaggamuffinTW8@reddit
Lots of tech is designed by white people for white people. It just had trouble with the darker pigmentation on my off arm.
NyxUK_OW@reddit
Generally yes, but if course this won't be true for everyone
Like allot of people as a kid I used to wear them on my dominant hand
But after growing up I realised this was unusual and frankly inconvenient for the many reasons others have mentioned so I decided to switch over to my non dominant hand and eventually just got used to it.
Now it's second nature.
Feel like most people who wear it on their dominant just learnt the habit when they were young and just didn't care to change it later.
For whatever reason it seems to be instinct to attach stuff like watches to your dominant side at first.
highrisedrifter@reddit
I'm right handed and I wear my watch on my right wrist. Always have.
boddle88@reddit
Rhd and wear on right
townshatfire@reddit
Im right handed and to the amazement of anyone who knows me, I wear my watch on my right wrist.
Can't cope with it on the left.
Dunno why.
saludpesetasamor@reddit
Same! I can’t bear how it feels on my left wrist for some reason. When I started working in offices it got in the way really fast, so I’d take it off and put it in my glasses case rather than wear it on the other arm. It just feels illogical to me.
blindtig3r@reddit
Right handed and I wear it on my right. Nobody told me which wrist to use when I was as a kid so I got used to wearing it on the “wrong” side.
trilinker@reddit
Right handed, wear it on my right, if I wear one at all as I have allergic reactions to the metal backs of watches
DiligentCockroach700@reddit
My wife is left handed but wears her watch on her left wrist
LaidBackLeopard@reddit
So you don't lose it inside the cow. (Certain scenes in All Creatures Great and Small left a lasting impression on me).
saludpesetasamor@reddit
I found it so traumatising as a child to see people arm-deep in cows! Memory unlocked. Eventually I asked my mother about it and that conversation was even worse.
jilljd38@reddit
Right handed and it's on that wrist , don't find it comfy on my left
sharkkallis@reddit
I'm a righty and wear a watch (on the odd time I actually do) on my right wrist.
Goes back to exams at school where I wanted to see the time while I was writing.
Wolfstar_Forever_@reddit
Nope. Used to be called weird cause I didn't mind which it was on.
BeanOnAJourney@reddit
The majority of the time i do yes, but occasionally I wear it on my dominant hand because I have arthritis and tendonitis in my non-dominant wrist and it becomes too swollen and painful to wear my watch on sometimes.
Now I have a question for anybody who reads this: were you ever told if you wear your watch on your dominant wrist and turn your wrist to look at the time while you're writing it could cause you to break your wrist? This is what we were taught by a primary school teacher and I believed it for an embarrassing length of time.
thethirdbar@reddit
I'm a lefty and wear mine on my left. Putting it on and off can be a bugger tho it's much easier with fitbit-style rubber straps and such.
flyingredwolves@reddit
Left handed and wear a watch on my left. Admittedly, I haven't worn a watch with any regularity since 2008.
GS56Nc@reddit
O
Niche_Enjoyer@reddit
To avoid damaging it, the chances are reduced on your less dominant side.

Nope, I'm right handed and wear it on my right wrist.
PKblaze@reddit
Nope, it's on my dom hand.
holytriplem@reddit

PKblaze@reddit
Nah, just my dick hand.

Smeeble09@reddit
No, I'm right handed and wear it on my right wrist.
Kian-Tremayne@reddit
Left handed, wear it on my left. Makes sense for me now because it’s an Apple Watch so I’m using my dominant hand to tap to pay on public transport.
I think the reason I originally did it was because my father was a very old fashioned “left handedness is wrong” type so I learned to do everything the right handed way.
Mr4528@reddit
Right handed on my right.
daz1987@reddit
Always have, dunno why.
filbert94@reddit
Right handed. Wear it on my right. Left feels wrong.
Fun fact: I eat left handed
simonjp@reddit
I wonder if you are a bit more ambidextrous than you realise!
made-of-questions@reddit
Tried it, doesn't bother me, but I definitely bang it against more things.
Farscape_rocked@reddit
I wear mine on my dominant wrist. I used to wear it on the inside of my non-dominant wrist as I found looking at it an easier action than looking at a watch on the normal side. I think I'll revert to it and see how it goes.
holytriplem@reddit
Putting on and taking off a watch with your non-dominant hand is tricky
Active_Definition_57@reddit
This is the sensible answer.
SoggyWotsits@reddit
Left handed and wear it on my left. The right feels weird.

Right dominant ambidextrous and I wear it on my right wrist.
lithaborn@reddit
I've tried to wear it on my non dominant wrist and it just feels wrong. Also I'm so used to checking it on my right wrist, it would annoy the crap out of me getting used to looking at my left.
I moved my wall clock to a different wall over the weekend, I can't stop looking at where it used to be! Damned if I'm doing that with my own body.

Android_slag@reddit
Depends on what I'm doing.. just about the house, dominant (right)wrist facing out. Whilst at work I'll flip it so it's on the inside of left wrist. Before anyone asks. Imagine holding a big drill with the extra handle at the front.... Now if only they got auto rotate on the watch screens to save my neck
Key_Produce2617@reddit
I wear mine on my right because I work with a computer on my left arm. I’m right handed.
FlossieAnn@reddit
I chop and change. I'm right handed and some days I'll wear the watch on my left wrist, other days on my right. I might even switch it over during the day. Sometimes I barely even realise I've switched it.
TinyBeth96@reddit
I wear it in my dominant hand, wondered why people thought I was a lefty for ages.
I get that some may find it gets in the way when writing etc but to me it makes sense to glance at my right.
I think I also use my knife and fork in the wrong hand too. So take that as you will.
Free_Ad7415@reddit
No, I’m right handed and wear it on my right. Never got on with putting it on my left wrist, feels really unnatural
liltrex94@reddit
I only wear mine when I swim or cycle

Left handed with smart watch on left wrist.
We live in a right handed world, I can use my right hand quite well but not well enough to be classed as ambidextrous.
Hannimal987@reddit
Ambidextrous. I’m naturally left handed, do everything with my left hand but when I was at nursery I was coached to write with my right hand, I assume so I didn’t write across my writing. I wear my watch on my left hand 🤷♀️
brynnafidska@reddit
I've worn a watch on both wrists (not at the same time).
There's also been long periods when I've not written a watch.
And during my late teens I would regularly swap my watch from one wrist to the other every few weeks.
shortercrust@reddit
I used to wear my watch on my dominant right hand because I once got a watch rash on my left wrist when I was at primary school. I just got used to it and never switched back.
ThePeake@reddit
Right-handed, wear a watch on my right wrist. Have done since I was a kid. I know it's the 'wrong' way but who cares.
Dry_Bandicoot_5212@reddit
I was raised to wear it on my left wrist. Non dominant or not. I once put it on my right wrist and my dad flipped out. He was raised the same way. There's only one way to wear a watch. In my opinion, it just makes sense for it to be the non dominant side.
Lower-Let7075@reddit
Broke my non dom wrist 2 years ago . Have had to wear my watch on my dom wrist ever since . I still occasionally look at my non dom wrist for the time .
RookieDuckMan@reddit
I didn’t use to, but now I do
Tetsuo1981@reddit
Always wore it on my left being a lefty, just felt right. Then I worked with someone who was a Militant left hander who was affronted that I did this. He had left handed rulers, scissors, mugs, tape measures the whole lot. He was an alright bloke but he was hard work. Now I barely wear one due to work
YorkshireMary@reddit
Yes, that's what we were told as kids. But watches ⌚️ are almost redundant due to cell phones.
Nature-Medicine-888@reddit
Because doing up the watch strap is fiddly so I do it with my dominant hand as my non dominant one would fumble it
Chip_A@reddit
I wear mine on my dominant hand, always have done!
oscarx-ray@reddit
It scrapes / snags against things when you're writing, using a mouse, or doing many similar, dominant hand tasks.
Frosty_Customer_9243@reddit
Left and left for me.
deadlygaming11@reddit
I actually know the reason for this! Basically, it comes from writing with older pens/quills which had slow drying ink so having a clunky watch on your wrist meant that you were more likely to drag it and spoil your writing. Even now, a watch will drag slightly which is annoying to deal with.
KingKhram@reddit
I haven't worn a watch in years, but my guess is that it's easier to put on and take off when needed. I'm right handed and I used to have a watch on my left wrist
evelynsmee@reddit

When I had a wrist one, it went on my right (dominant) because I hate having things on my left.
However, I prefer necklace ones.

Yes, it’s less likely to get caught on things. Google degloving hand injury and you’ll find out why.

I wipe my arse with my left so wear it on my right.
justdont7133@reddit
Non-dominant hand because it's a smart watch and I'm not coordinated enough with my left to use the touch screen
1968Bladerunner@reddit
Nope - right & right.
Ka3dy@reddit

prustage@reddit

Strong_Roll5639@reddit

Apprehensive-Top3675@reddit
It is customary but not universal.
JustNoGuy_@reddit
I don't wear a watch anymore. I was pulling out my phone to check the time every time, so I don't bother with one these days.
Easy-Equal@reddit
Normally I think its so you can still check the time while doing stuff with your main hand also less likely to get damaged etc I imagine
daveb_33@reddit
Left handed and wear it on my left. Except I’m kind of ambidextrous as I do some things right handed. It just feels right on my left, if that helps.
Blandiblub@reddit
Left handed. Watch on left wrist.
DogThatGoesBook@reddit
I’m left handed and tend to wear mine on my keft
Ivy_Sinclaire@reddit
No. I prefer it on my right wrist. I'm right handed.
