83 here. Yeah, they became popular in the early 90s, so I was still young enough to not be embarrassed by them lol. But I'm pretty sure I didn't wear them after I was ten or so.

The kids at my school would only make fun if you got sneakers there. And really only after a certain age. I rocked the shit out of my ProWings and light up sneakers as a kid.

I remember the "source" but I think they took it off the signs in the latter years of I'm not mistaken. Man, I miss being able to nab a cute pair of shoes for $12. When their prices started going up, I was like "whoa, who do you think you are? JC Penny?"

Fuck off. I literally never talk to anyone in this sub this way, but typically people in this sub don't act like you. I didn't say the show was stupid, or that people who like the show have bad taste, or anything like that. All I said was that I personally don't like it. And that's my right. This is a damn discussion board; I'm not obligated to echo the most common sentiment. I'm not even mad at the people downvoting my comment about hating the show. I expected that, because most people love it. And to be honest, your comment makes me wonder if you're even a xennial, because people our age can typically handle being disagreed with on such unimportant matters. And if you actually are middle aged, then you need to grow up and spend less time chatting with teenagers online, because that's what you sound like.

How do y'alls parents react to you beginning to are? Mine are dismissive when I mention things like this because compared to 70-year-old problems it's light. I just don't even mention my ailments anymore because they act like I'm being silly, despite the fact that they moaned constantly about getting older when they were my age.

What was your relationship with food growing up?

Posted by dattaldo@reddit | Xennials | View on Reddit | 319 comments

Tbf, Cajun white is a different brand of white lol. I grew up southern as well, and while the white people's cooking I've had has typically not been _completely_ bland, it has sometimes been generally uninteresting. Like the most basic attempt. Often, certainly not always. But Louisiana is a whole other deal. White folks down there use Tony Chachere's lol

Curious?

They even call 90s music "old school." But it makes sense. We were teens in the 90s-- three decades ago. The 90s are to them what the 60s were to us.

What 90s musical artists have been ruined for you in the current day & age?

I appreciate your feedback, especially the part about not needing to carry water for everyone. I happen to be an Aquarius (the water nearer), so that's pretty on the nose lol What further complicates things is that she told everyone at her interview that we're good friends. 🙃 Her using me as a reference almost feels like she's forcing me to either vouch for her or come off looking like an asshole of a friend. But like you said, I don't have to participate in her chaos. That's on her. But I do think it's time to uninvest a bit in the relationship. Not saying I need to cut her off or anything. But she might get moved from the "close friend" column to just "buddy" lol Thank you again ❤️

Yes, it's very insulting. I've known my friend for over 20 years, and things are kind of coming to a head with this issue. She recently applied for a job at a place where I worked for over 10 years, in the actual department where I worked. I left there with a good reputation and good relationships, and I would be open to working there again. She listed me as a reference... She has never asked me to be a reference for her. I believe this is partly because she suspects that I suspect she's fucking up at these jobs, although she doesn't tell me the whole story. But also, we're a million years old. You should have 3 or 4 people that you've actually worked with who will vouch for your skills and integrity. So anyway, she listed me as a reference (without telling me beforehand). So now you're asking me to endorse you to my former colleagues, although I've never worked with you, don't have a ton of faith in your integrity where work is concerned, and have no idea what you've been doing at all of these jobs to cause things to go sour every single time. But if i refused I would look like a big ole dick of a friend. Am I overreacting, or am I justified in kind of resenting her for backing me into a corner? Sorry for the essay lol

We’re thinking about Gen Z wrong….

I used to manage a team of 5 employees, all gen z. They didn't mind working hard. But the thing that was taxing for me was that they needed CONSTANT affirmation for doing the basics of their jobs. (Like, they needed to hear multiple times a week that they were doing good.) If I wasn't heaping praise on them, they assumed they were failing. I tried to meet them in the middle-- giving them kudos way more often than what I would personally need from my own boss, but also reinforcing with them that I saw them as intelligent and competent, and if I'm ever displeased with their work I would let them know. No need for constant anxiety over performance. They also needed to process their feelings ALL the time and expected more of a mentor/mentee relationship than what I think someone our age would expect from a boss. But I didn't really mind that, as they were young professionals and I liked helping prepare them for the next steps in their careers (and lives... because they wanted to talk about literally everything lol). Because, while I do think our generation is stronger for having been encouraged to be independent and figure things out on our own, we certainly could've benefited from a little more nurturing from the older generation.

Perhaps in some cases. But often it's people simply lying to themselves about why they can't keep a job and trying like hell to get you to affirm the narrative they've created in order to put the blame on others.

Yes. I have a friend like this. Every job she has ends up going sour for one reason or another, and she either gets fired or gets fed up and starts looking for another job. And the way she describes it, it always stems from somebody's irrational dislike of her. I never feel like she's telling me the whole story, and it makes me resent her for looking to me for support when she's obviously not telling me the whole truth. She recently asked me, "what is it about me that makes people just not like me?" All I could say was "I don't know. I find you likable but I don't work with you, and i only know what you've told me." 🤷🏽‍♀️

Gift for high school grad

Re: your edit about 5k not being life changing. At that stage of life (fresh out of college), $5k can be a significant boon, covering some of the basics you need to get your adult life started... a deposit for an apartment, basic furniture, maybe a down payment on a decent car. It can be the difference between starting your life in survival mode vs simply being able to take care of business. Sure, in the scope of an entire life, 5k isn't a ton. But for a young adult just getting started, it can help avoid stress and early debt.

I second gift cards, maybe Amazon and Walmart? That way she can get necessities and fun things for her dorm. Honestly, the $5k for later sounds amazing. You don't really sound pressed for money, if you don't mind me saying so. So maybe a couple hundred in gift cards for now and $5k waiting for her at graduation? All of that would make one awesome graduation gift.

That was pretty standard back in the day as far as I know. But the woman's flower was a corsage and the man's a boutonneire. The man/boy typically purchased the matching set after finding out what color dress his date would be wearing.
