A Sony Discman from 2001, now displayed like an ancient artifact. Once used by teenagers to listen to Linkin Park, carefully walk without making the CD skip, and pretend life was harder than it really was.

Linkin Park?
FungiStudent@reddit
Goddamn right. I listened to Grateful Dead and Phish and Jerry Garcia Band. I had a nice collection of Dicks Picks, almost 10 or so. Dicks Picks 29 is now worth hundreds of dollars, go figure. On to Dave's Picks.

Don't slander genius art just because you bought into the propaganda that makes us feel embarrassed for what was fresh in our youth.
Just because we all stopped being teenagers and decided that edgy nu metal wasn't cool anymore doesn't make it true. It was and is fucking cool.

Slander? Comically dramatic. It’s ok to have not liked linkin park
Lones0meCrowdedEast@reddit
....yes, I was being comedically dramatic when I chose the word "slander". Clearly you are very perceptive.

People have been known to get really bent out of shape about their preferred nostalgia being besmirched. My bad for assuming you were one of them

I mean I like defending and reshaping the general perception of things I enjoy, but I'm not about to genuinely pick a meaningful fight with some rando I don't know about them not liking LP. You feel however you want, I'll respond with disagreement as it's a public forum and typically use hyperbole in doing so cuz it's funnier that way, and we'll both walk away feeling how we felt when we came in 🤷♂️
It's the internet, if we're not here to arbitrarily feign sincerity about things that don't matter wtf are we even doing here?
ughyoujag@reddit
That hit me like a really sincere lesson from Rick to Morty

Don't tell the historians I stuck with tapes less battery usage and no skips.
walkinghrviolation86@reddit
Is this for real ? If it was from 2001 it would have an anti skip feature. Maybe if it was cheap brand it wouldn’t but that’s a fucking discman. Though I wasn’t listening to linkin park. They’re too soft for me. For me if it was 2001 it was probably Mudvayne L.D 50. I’m glad I grew out of numetal. What frightens me more is numetal is starting to make a comeback. My only guilty pleasure is limp bizkit. I don’t know why but I still enjoy listening to them every so often.

I’m okay with an Apple II e being in a museum, but this? This goes too far.

A version of that CD player was the last one I ever owned. Thing was built like a tank. It was like they finally figured out how to make them not skip just before the iPod came out.
ChimneySwiftGold@reddit
And then the iPod killed the disc man. There was no looking back.
Evolution of devices moved fast back then.
rdogg_82@reddit
This one was the real og discman for me.
ChimneySwiftGold@reddit
That tank was a classic.
MortgageRegular2509@reddit
Christ, I had that same setup!!!
SubstantialDog9170@reddit
Yep, had that exact one

I took my kid to a Gen X exhibit at a museum and it was weird seeing Popples displayed like a relic.
a_solid_6@reddit
Oh man, I loved my popples!
Extension_Chart2641@reddit
I still have one!
Paul_Smith_Hi@reddit
To be fair, in the end, it didn't even matter.
RanHakubi@reddit
Seriously? But I tried so hard. And got so far.
hacksawomission@reddit
I put my trust in you.
Extension_Chart2641@reddit
Pushed as far as I could go
Lones0meCrowdedEast@reddit
That thing had G protection, walking carefully was unnecessary. Hell once g protection came out I used to shake them violently just to see how long it'd take to fuck it up and I'd get like 30-45s in before it started skipping.
delldarlin@reddit
Just think, someone might have used this very device to play that Everclear song about having to listen to the music on the AM Radio.
