What’s the single most important factor that helps a car reach 300k+ miles?

TuvixHadItComing@reddit

People have little perspective on what an "unreliable" brand is too. The Nissan CVTs that everyone loves to hate on and swear they'd never let anyone they care about buy a Nissan with a CVT? Those had a six percent failure rate during the warranty period. Which is of course only part of the picture, and six percent ain't great, but there are way more people who bought, drove and eventually traded in those cars without ever having a transmission issue, and a good chunk of those people probably still look back and go "man I loved that Altima, that car was great." *Car I didn't have any problems with was still statistically more likely to have had a problem, but in my case it didn't* doesn't really factor into people's post-hoc feelings about a car.

Long Term Effects of Drive-thru Car Wash?

>I live in an apartment building and in an area where I have no access or ability to hand wash my car If the issue is no hose, or excessive runoff, the Gary Dean method with a no-rinse soap will work fine. Once you get the technique down it doesn't take very long and you are using around 2 gallons of water. A year's worth of supplies for doing this type of wash can be had for like $60: - Bottle of rinseless wash such as Optimum No Rinse - 20-pack of microfibres - A spray bottle - A bucket - A bottle of spray-wax if you wanna get fancy with it. Apart from reduced water usage, the nice thing about this system is you are basically never letting the same piece of cloth touch your car twice, apart from the drying cloth which should stay clean. So you greatly reduce the odds of dragging a piece of grit across your paint.

If Hyundai/Kia are so unreliable, why are they literally everywhere?

Posted by phtphongg@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 1543 comments

TuvixHadItComing@reddit

People also mistake what poor reliability means. It's not that every one of these cars is plagued with issues every other month; it's that, overall, they don't compare well to their competitors. The topic was Kia and Hyundai but to use Nissan as an example, their infamous bad CVTs had a failure rate of around 6% during the warranty period. Failure past the warranty period would still be a concern but it's not like every single one grenaded itself at 85,000 miles. And a ton of people would have bought these cars, had zero transmission problems for five or six years, traded them in and happily gone about their life going "remember that Altima I had in my twenties? That thing was great." For the people that never had problems, the thought that a Honda would have had an even lower chance of failure doesn't really enter the equation because at that point, the failure rate the owner *has experienced* on their unreliable car is zero. Secondary answer: old people. The Nissan Rogue is like catnip to the elderly.

He got told by our boss that he would have to apologize. His response: >Oh I already did! Yeah if you look at the email the very first line is "I'm sorry if this offends you, but..." I think that was the day he knew he was ready to hang it up. I miss that guy so much.

We were the only two people in our role and were peers but he loved to refer to himself as the "senior [our job title]" so I'd razz him for being old. One day I said "John when did the T-Rex die off?" He told me "Oh it was around 65 million years ago" I asked him "were you sad when it happened?"

From my limited experience, Volkswagen nerds (of the current century) are pretty chill. Super helpful to each other, no trim shaming unless you count playful ribbing about the two-point-slow engine. The only thing I guess i could say apart from the whole Hitler thing is they're a little defensive about reliability. You see a lot of "well if it's properly maintained..." comments. Like this is the kind of "toxicity" you see in the Jetta subreddit (on a post about switching from a 2013 to a 2025): >Honestly side by side the 2025 is very reminiscent of the mk6 , personally I’m not a fan but that’s still a huge upgrade congrats

Until the RPMs drop down from their initial value. In my car, cold start is 1200 or so and it'll drop down to a 1000 after maybe 45 seconds. In winter it takes a bit longer and I feel like it doesn't drop quite as low when it's cold out, but if you watch the tach you can see there's a clear dip when the car has "showered and done its hair and is ready to go so work."

Either because they expect to start charging you for the privilege at some point, or they're acclimating consumers to not having it on the fob so it can be a subscription on the *next* vehicle you buy.

The only part of this I can get behind is stuff that *requires* ongoing support/connectivity. My car has remote start on the key fob. It also has it on the app along with a bunch of other features. It's included for four years after buying new, then you either lose the app connectivity or you pay a monthly fee to keep the car talking to the app over cellular data. I'm fine with that. If they said "pay up or you lose remote start from your fob?" that would be it for a brand for me. Stuff like subscription heated seats? Hell no.

As far as bad jokes go this isn't the worst. But I notice a trend with jokes that don't go over well here. Somebody finds a word or phrase that they think would make a good punchline and then cobble together a shaggy dog story to get themselves to the punchline they want. Those jokes *can* work. Putting Descartes before the whores for example, or the one about the frog offering collateral to take a loan (it's a knick knack Paddywhack, give the frog a loan!") But writing that kind of joke that actually works is *hard.* Writing one that works delivered in a text post without the benefit of inflection or charisma is beyond hard. It's rigged carnival game, "the fun is in the attempt, I don't expect to succeed" levels of difficulty. Your attempt was not anywhere near the worst I've seen here.

My MIL loaned us her manual 2013 (I think?) Versa hatchback while she was overseas for six months. We didn't have a car at the time, and it was great. Good on gas, got us around, no mechanical issues though it was only a year or two old at the time so that's expected. I'm 6'4" but I made it work! She's still driving it. I understand and participate in the memes about Nissan but as an affordable option for someone who can drive stick and isn't otherwise super into car stuff? Great option.

I think it's not scary once you get through your first scary thing and it works out ok. Also, if it's not your only vehicle. I started doing fairly basic stuff myself (seat swap, battery change, oil) but I had the safety net of a second vehicle. Doing my own work on my only vehicle, where I ain't driving anywhere until the job gets done? That would be more daunting.

What’s the ONE piece of PC-building advice you wish every beginner knew?

Posted by CartoonistOk5787@reddit | buildapc | View on Reddit | 230 comments

TuvixHadItComing@reddit

After you have built your PC, do not let this sub influence *whether* you should upgrade. The flow chart for that decision begins with "does my PC run the games I play at a performance level I enjoy?" And ends with "can I afford to?" That's it. **After** you decide based on your own personal factors (the two questions above) that you do want to look into upgrades, this sub will help you get the most bang for your buck. But if you are deciding whether you need to upgrade based on the rigs you see posted here, you're falling into the FOMO trap. 1: Does my shit run the way I wanted it to? If yes, go play games. If no, see question 2. 2: Can I afford to replace a major component or do a new build? If no, play Stardew Valley. If yes, come to reddit for input.

If I see someone with a new car my reaction can range from "oh nice, good for them" to "blech" if I don't like that particular model to just not noticing at all. But absent a bumper sticker I don't generally form any real opinion on the driver. But an older car that is clearly well taken care of? That says great things about its owner.

How to move tire and wheels by yourself?

Posted by throwawaypillow100@reddit | askcarguys | View on Reddit | 74 comments

TuvixHadItComing@reddit

Lol at a couple of these comments but they do raise an interesting question: Are you assuming you can't lift them because they *look* heavy? Or have you tried and failed to lift them? Generally speaking passenger vehicle wheels are going to be in the manageable range for an able-bodied adult. If you're talking rims with tires on them, you might get into the 70 pound range and have to flip them out onto the ground without fully picking them up. As one of the other commenters said, use leverage. Once they're on the ground you can roll them where they need to go. Don't stack all four if they're that heavy. Roll one, place on its side. Then roll another next to it and flop it into the one you already moved. Then repeat for a second stack. If they're just tires and you don't have a second set of rims, you can probably lift them way easier than you think but if not, no judgement! Just follow the same steps above.

Similarly: Febreeze originally was unscented and worked just as well. But people testing it were like "yeah I don't smell anything, how do I know it worked?" Not smelling anything is how you know it worked! But they ended up adding a (nice, though a bit strong for my taste) scent to it. So Febreeze magically neutralizes odours except for itself.

I just want to point out the drug addict math you did there in your edit. Your premise was x people times y dollars per suit equals enough to bankrupt them. It was pointed out that your number for x was too high so you immediately raised y to cancel it out. I'm not even saying one number is more or less wrong; I assume both numbers came directly out of thin air. It's just funny because the same kind of "make it fit math" is very familiar to recovering addicts, calorie counters, and people with poor time management (hey I just described myself three times in one sentence).

So they said they'd be able to update the thread in a couple days when the cable they ordered off Amazon arrived. Then I realized my Dad probably only has one, but has a measuring tape for every room in the house. Jokes on him though, I can get a rough measurement using a known-length cable, but good like getting 1Gbps duplex over a Stanley 50' measuring tape.
