Brand new 9800x3d reaching 80% when downloading steam games and followed by blue screen

I just bought and installed this yesterday with no issues until this morning when I downloaded a game. My cpu revved up to 90% usage while downloading a game and then it blue screened. Double checked thermal and cpu seating, using docp profile ii Rig: crosshair x670 hero 4090 crucial pro 64gb (docp ii at 6000) noctua dh 15 Turbo game mode is off in bios Now it’s blue screening every few minutes of being on. Blue screen errors are varied on each crash When I start steam my cpu is going up to 100 utilization and will be revving up the entire time I’ve never had this issue and not sure where else to start troubleshooting

Whats the error on the blue screen say? Its normal for CPUs to run hard while downloading/installing games

It’s different every time this last one was dfn corrupt

Id do a fresh install of windows and start over, getting that error specifically while downloading games points me to an SSD issue

Even if there are different errors every time, if you run the mini dump from the blue screen through windbg you might find a common failure point even if it trips a different error condition each time. Not foolproof but I narrowed down a niche driver issue with my DAC this way just the other week. All the blue screen messages kept making me think it was a memory issue, but it was just a random unrelated driver bug. Just Google the process, even the AI response gave me mostly good info on trying to narrow it down

I had an issue with nvidia driver update recently. rolled it back and it was ok again. then i turned off DLSR 2.25x mode and tried the reinstall of the new driver, and it worked.

You installed a new CPU but didn't do a fresh windows install? That will most likely be the culprit.

Could be your ram. The cpu is running over time because its trying to make up for the errors as it also has its own ram but the errors pile up and then it drops everything and crashes.

This is slightly askew from how I experienced it (different processor and I didn't BSOD) but right after building my rig my CPU usage would skyrocket and thermals would go to crap specifically when downloading games. I paused my antivirus during the downloads and that fixed it. Realtime scanning when downloading a large game was the culprit.

I had this issue where my entire PC was stuttering when downloading things. I don’t remember if my CPU usage was high also but it was an issue with my SSD. Switched it and everything was resolved. I also can’t remember if it was blue screening since it was a while ago but I think that may have been a factor too. Check your usage of your storage drive

I mean if your Internet is really good it'll use all the CPU to download and install the game. Either your windows is corrupted or you have a ram issue, if you do no docp profile what happens? Try one stick of ram, or try different slots etc. run the mfc/scan now command and see if windows has issues. Maybe a driver is bad, downgrade your GPU drivers. What ever you do just make sure to do it one at a time

I assumed it’s tied to this new cpu. I had a 7800x3d prior to installing the 9800 with no issues . gave it to my sister as a Christmas present. I turned off docp and run everything stock nothing over clocked. My internet is 2.5 but even with my 7800 it never revived up while downloading any games. I play a heavily modded Skyrim without issues with mostly 4k textures and I had no issues. I’m gonna reinstall windows and reinstall the newest bios and hope for the best

Maybe you’ve covered this earlier but i couldn’t find it. Did you reinstall windows when you got the new cpu? Shouldn’t be needed, but sometimes helps

I was having tons of crashes with my 9800x3d when PBO was enabled in the bios. As I am a noob I asked chat gpt and it walked me through troubleshooting what to try turning off.

Bios is updated. Even turned off docp just in case but nope it’s still revving on idle
