During the Yorkshire Ripper murders, I was about 8 years old; a mate of mine said that there was a killer who lived in this house on the corner, called himself Bluey cos he went after kids in blue coats and killed them. We used to walk past with our coats under our jumpers. The Ripper stories made it all the more real.

What does the UK think of Michael Barrymore?

Yeah, he was massive. In the days when there wasn't much choice on TV, he had his own game show Strike it Lucky, and his own chat/variety show. He kind of filled the gap between Brucie with the cheeky audience participation and Freddie Starr with taking it too far. Was married to his manager Cheryl I think, then went to a gay club in London and came out. Massive news, don't think it affected his career much. The Lubbock thing did for him. He's done docs since then I think, and was in a comedy drama thing where he played a version of himself, but don't know if that was before or after the pool incident. Didn't know he was getting massive on tiktok, cos I'm an adult and don't use it.

We had a no going to the toilet during lessons rule (unless you had a medical note, which could be permanent or temporary depending on the situation) so pupils were expected to go during breaks. After COVID, we changed it and it's still in operation now, pupils can go during lessons, but we're supposed to log when they go, (some kids without 'official' medical conditions will go during every lesson, so logging off designed to stop it). Teachers don't go during lessons, so we kind of expect pupils to do likewise; problem is of course it there's about ten times as many pupils than staff, do it's busier during breaks. It's one of those rules that's adapted to take in pupils abusing it, but then discriminates against pupils who are genuinely desperate.

I started high school in 83, slipper was the thing at primary school when I started in the late 70s. Never had it, but heard about it. Blackboard rubbers regularly thrown at pupils across class to 'get attention'. At high school, the headteacher caned pupils, maybe other deputies too. However, teachers would administer mild clouts in lessons. One guy carried a meter stick and smacked the desks with it; another would rub your ears vigorously with the palms of his hands. Don't remember a big announcement when it stopped, or even the usual suspects rejoicing that they'd not get the cane again. I heard that there were rules on cane use: thickness of cane, the fact that you couldn't lift cane over shoulder height.

When I was at school in the 80s, nobody was allowed to go during lessons. In fact, in my school, that rule applied for 20 years. COVID stopped that, we started allowing pupils to go. Now they go when they like.

I work in a school that uses class charts. Some pupils go the toilet every time I teach them. I could draw up a list in advance of who will ask. I always let them go. But there is a button on the class chart that registers that they have gone (we also have buttons for good/bad behavior points; missing from lesson, being helpful etc) Some pupils go to the toilet every lesson in a day pretty much. Some pupils have notes or toilet passes from home to say they need to go for medical reasons, these can be temporary. I suspect what's happened here is that a system designed to crack down on frequent users, has caught somebody else randomly. Remember a few years back when supermarkets stopped adults buying alcohol if they had kids with them? Some parents probably were buying it for their older kids, but others got caught up in it.
