What were some of your favourite/ most memorable books as a child?

Hmm I didn’t much read books for small children even at a young age. Jolly postman maybe? I liked all the foldy bits and puzzles. I did like fairy tales and poetry books and rhymes, but my bedtime stories were largely the Famous 5 when I was in primary school. I did have a goosebumps phase like every kid, but I really got into the babysitters club when I was 9-10. I did enjoy Captain underpants and read a lot of Beano comics though, which was aimed younger. Hated Harry Potter. Mostly in secondary school was into those teen/adolescence books that talk about puberty and crushes and boobs and all that stuff And then about 14 I started reading Lord of the Rings and got really obsessed with that and was printing off folders and folders of elvish. My primary school was pretty heavy on more advanced literature though. In class we were reading “goodnight mister Tom” when we were 8, and Swallows and Amazons the next year. I didn’t much attend my classes in infants because I apparently “knew it all already” so I spent a lot of the time doing my own thing creatively, on the computers or reading all the books in the school library. There were certainly positives to that. The negatives were that my adhd wasn’t helped as I rarely had to pay attention in class, and I often didn’t necessarily process the context and implications of the text, just because I had the vocabulary down. I had stolen a book from the library accidentally and it’s called “Zlata’s diary” which is a biography of a girl growing up in Yugoslavia. I can guarantee you when I first read that book I’m sure I had no idea what it was about nor memorised it. I’d learned to read lines out loud and not remember any of it. So I do kinda wish that I’d read more Philip Pullman, Lemony Snickett, Terry Pratchett, Neil Gaiman (boo) and other more fantasy-type books because I think I’d have gotten more out of them. A lot of the books on my shelf that I have fond memories of end up being weird education books that I again accidentally stole from the school library for kids younger than me about ghosts and creepy Victorian medical shit though the ages and dead bodies and stuff. I guess if you’re looking at kids books I liked stuff with rhymes and songs and things to do besides just read and a bit of wordplay. (Obvious autistic kid here I know)
