What's the origin of your football clubs nickname?

West Ham United - "The Hammers" or "The Irons" as the club was founded as the works football team for Thames Ironworks which to build and repair ships. The club crest is two crossed metal working hammers. The United name came about when West Ham FC merged with neighbouring Thames Ironworks FC to form one club. Charlton Athletic - "The Addicks" . SE London pronounciation of "haddock" As haddock and chips used to be a cheap and popular meal. Probably stems from the days when you could go to the match , visit the pub, have a fish supper and still have change for the busfare home. They do have other nicknames "The Valiants" as their ground is called "The Valley" and the "Red Robins" as they play in a red and white kit. Gillingham - "The Gills" (not very original) its just a shortened form of their name. One which always puzzled me is Exeter City FC who are nicknamed "The Grecians" there are numerous explanations for that. Bristol Rovers have had various nicknames - "The Gas" as they used to play at the Gasworks Ground and their current nickname "The Pirates" as Bristol being a West Country seaport used to be the origin of piracy in years gone by. I like the later one as it sounds better than Bristol City's one "The Robins" as they play in red shirts.
